Lonavla & Khandala - Best in the rains!
Jun 08, 2006 02:40 PM 11510 Views

I traveled to Kandhla and Lonavla on 4th June 2006. Unfortunately it was too late, when my husband, son and our friends with their son left Mumbai at about 5pm. It is much better when you leave at 11am or noon so to avoid traffic jams on the main roads and highways.

Anyway, we arrived in Kandala at around 7:30pm. We stopped at Kamat Hotel that first showed up on arrival, gave our one year old sons their idli dinner and drank a cup of tea too warm ourselves up in the cold and windy weather. It started drizzling and we quickly then headed for Lonavla before the roads become very unclear and fog starts to rise.

Once we arrived in Lonavla at approximately 8:30pm, we couldn't find any hotel with accommodation! I got frantic but still kept my cool. We searched for bungalows. But with bungalows you need about 10 people or more. Nevertheless, we didn't lose hope. We searched every hotel and inn, at around 11:00pm we found a four star hotel called The Metropole with just one room available, and it wasn't any sort of room! It was a suite that was going for Rs4,500 per night and to put an extra double bed in the room, it costed an extra Rs500. We weren't worried about the money, we were just grateful that we found a big enough room for the six of us to stay in. The best thing of the hotel was that the owner of the hotel was using the suite for himself and when he saw that we had babies with us, he was very kind enough to give us his suite as he knew that the boys were now cranky and tired.

Before we moved into the room, the owner had it cleaned up in five minutes. When we moved in the air conditioned room, there was a lounge, a bathroom with hot water for 24 hours, a master bed and room service also was 24 hours, cable television, a flask with drinking water and lighting was excellent. If a couple comes on their honeymoon, it will be very romantic with the dim lighting! We settled our things quickly, ordered dinner in the room, bathed the kids and put them to sleep by midnight.

Before the dinner arrived, the house-keeping boys came in and set up a double bed at about 12:15am. By the time dinner arrived at about 12:30am we were relaxing. We ordered mutton masala, hydrabadi biryani with raita, and rumali roti. For my vegetarian friend, she ordered mixed vegetable handi and jeera rice. All of this came to about Rs700.

We chatted till about 4:30am then went to bed. The bed was very comfortable, with crisp white sheets and soft headboard especially for the boys.

Then the next day we went touring. We left the hotel at about 10:00am. First we wanted to go to Bushy Dam, but when we passed it, there was no water and so the dam was completely dry. I was told that when the rains come heavily, the dam will fill up and many people enjoy swimming in it.

Next we headed to a waterfalls at about 10:30am. While driving up the mountain, you can see large valleys from the top. At about 11:00am we stopped at a parking spot, to take in the fresh air and experience the fog. The fog was so dense that you didn't want to move anywhere!

We reached the waterfalls at about 12:00 noon. It was amazing, it wasn't too crowded, although the water was slightly chilly but you can still swim in it. The waterfalls are naturally made, and you don't have to go all the way in to the centre of the pool. There are not many rocks with sharp edges where you can get hurt. Overall you can really enjoy yourself!

We arrived at the hotel at about 1:00pm and ordered lunch in the room. The boys had fresh tomato soup, french fries and rumali roti. The adults had mutton masala, sofiyani (chicken briyani), murgh tika (made in curd) and rumali roti. This came up to about Rs500.

After lunch, we packed up, checked out and went to buy Lonavla's famous food - Chikki, Mahableshwar Honey, Jelly Golly and Jelly sweets, and Dry Fruit Gulkand. The jelly items are made from fruits. All are very tasty!

We left Lonavla at 4pm and arrived in Mumbai at 7pm.

Overall, I think this trip is best when you go with family, friends and as a couple - never alone. Always carry a pair of warm clothes, if you are going to go swimming. Make accommodation reservations at least a week before arriving. The bungalows are really worthwhile if you are 10 people or more, they are very cozily made and very affordable!

KHAYENGE PEENGE NACHENGE GAYENGE AISH KARENGE AUR KYA AUR CHATA LE JANA MAT BHOOLNA

You are most welcome to this great tourist spot in Maharastra state.

I am dead sure if you once visited here you will never forgot the wonderful experience of your visit to Khandala, basically a hill station, which dazzles the visitors with its spectacular scenery, verdant hills, deep green valleys, beautiful lakes and waterfall. Situated at a height of 625 mt in the Sahyadri hills, this hill resort of immense beauty is popular weekend gateway from the hectic life of Mumbai.

I have got a chance to visit this beautiful place once in my lifetime and honestly sayinh I had enjoyed my time by watching its beauty and it was one of the best visit I ever had in my travelling experince.

Khandala is a place which has been blessed with valleys, hills, Milky WaterFalls, Lush Greenery and pleasant cool winds. This region full of natural beauty is a friend and we all are proud of it. Words are not enough to describe the beauty of this

place. Lonavala is an epic poem created by God. Beautiful mountain ranges trying to reach the sky are sites that please the human mind and give an experience of heavenly pleasure. The morning sun rising over here appears as if it is sprinkling rose water all over. Chirping birds gently awaken oneself and all of this makes it a really Good Morning.

Deep valley on one side and high hills on the other side divide Khandala and Lonavala. Luckily, modern industrialisation has not adversely affected Khandala. While travelling on Mumbai Bangalore National Highway, one has to cross the arduous Khopoli - Khandala Ghat. This is the famous Borghat. In a short distance of 8 Kms one has to climb a height of 369 meters. This is a difficult Ghat to climb. But once you reach here, you feel that this climb has been worth the trouble. Khandala is One place where you will fall in love at First Site. In fact this is exactly the reason that we feel must have inspired the makers of the movie ''GHULAM'' to include a song ''AATI KYA KHANDALA'' in their movie which has created huge waves throughout India. Also, Lonavala and Khandala are full of tourist practically for the whole year. Main reasons for this is the fact that it is very close to Mumbai, so people from Mumbai find it very convenient other reason is that the passengers travelling to south India or returning from there also pass through, making this place a busy spot. And the natural beauty of Lonavala & Khandala makes one forget the fatigue of the journey. Being at a considerable height from sea level, these two places enjoy a cool climate.

That is why many people stay here for a month or more during summer and winter. Many people make it a point to visit during the weekends to forget the Big City Blues.

mumbai India
Khandala- beauty unsurpassed
Aug 17, 2004 05:23 PM 9079 Views

Khandala in monsoon is like no other. Yes not even like its neighbour lonavla. The myst & mystery abound nothing less than heavens itself.

Our trip was in the middle of monsoon a day before independence day 2004. Reports of landslides on the Mumbai - Pune Expressway did not deter in taking this much awaited trip. Khandala is off the mumbai - pune expressway , some one and a half hours from mumbai -panvel.

As we reached khandala the weather changed into something out of a movie with lots of special effects. Driving back on the old nh4 highway bypass which takes you through khandala we suddenly lost vision. Out of nowhere a cloud envelopes you , it rains heavily and leaves you in 5-10 minutes with a feeling only the flowers and greenery around can express better. The ice cold rain, the wee bit of sunlight peeping in and the cool breeze transport you to another world, quite away from this one.

The twisted lanes into khandala hills, the cozy looking cottages and resorts not to forget the place where we stayed (Velvet hills ) was the icing on the cake.

Whether you stay in your cottage or hotel, or visit the numerous number of waterfalls mapping the area or just visit the public garden overlooking the valley you have never ever seen such beauty that us nature.

The place is suitable for young trekkers ( an excellent choice of location), revellers, couples and senior citizens.

In short if you are a worshipper of natures beauty then the temple is khandala in monsoon.

Jaake Aa Khandala....
Feb 15, 2002 12:26 PM 7406 Views

If you are living in or around Mumbai, Khandala is a nice getaway! You could drive up from Mumbai...supposed to be a fantastic drive by car! Never tried that though!

As others have mentioned, Khandala is at its best in the rains! The green hills around are quite a sight. I was there for a week of meditation. We stayed in a nice quiet place--can't remember the name, but it was far and away from the maddening crowd! I spent a lot of time just sitting and looking around at the hills and the valleys and drinking in their serenity and calmness.

One thing we tried was a trek to DUKE's NOSE! This is a real good one! Read on...! Four of us decided to climb up to Duke's Nose...and we let our instincts lead us...that means we headed straight, as the crow flies, to it. Across several hills, skirting some of them...we kept walking keeping the tip of the Nose in front of us (obviously!). At one stage the climb was very very steep, and there was nothing to cling on to! Nothing!! We climbed...we were used to doing this in Shillong! After several such steep climbs, we came up to a place where I distinctly smelled the wet fur of an animal...and it wasn't a cow or a dog!! Cautiously we looked around...it was so damn quiet, I was wondering if a person's last moments feel dramatic like this!! Then we spotted claw marks high on the bark of a tree...and these were on several of the nearby trees. One of the more experienced among us told us that they were probably bear pug marks. After that discovery we moved fast from there. There were several places where the path was very narrow, and a slip would land you up way down below!!

After more steep slopes and narrow paths, we reached the top of Duke's Nose. What a view it was...! You could look down and see all the other hills below it. Far off in the distance, several different shades of purple marked the distant hills. The highway was like a thread with tiny beads of traffic running through it!

The breeze blew gently and then strongly, perhaps to make its presence felt! While we were busy enjoying this feeling of achievement, we heard a little noise behind us, as though someone was creeping up on us. The first reaction was...'Bear??' And then, even as we let out the breath that we had been holding, we saw a family...2 kids, father, mother, grandfather and grandmother ambling up to the tip of Duke's Nose. For a moment we just stared, and then far behind them we saw their car!!! There had been a way up...and we had taken a non-existent route and thought that we were one of the very few to get up there!!!!

MORAL OF THE STORY: If you go to Khandala, find out how they got up there...and get up there. The view and the serenity is worth it!

Misty green and dripping Khandala
Jun 29, 2001 11:30 PM 6613 Views

Misty, green and dripping Khandala-that is how I liked Khandala.

I wanted to stay their during the rains.

When I got the opportunity it was raining.

There was water flowing down the road on the slope.

The place where I had got a room was up hill.

At the start of the road to the left was a small lake full of water with tall trees around.

The room had a balcony. Beyond the garden was lush green with overgrown grass. The trees were wet and dripping with the rain.

I had a hot cup of tea.

Suddenly the clouds descended and went past over the grassy lawn and down into the valleys enveloping everything.the clouds came in to the room from the open windows and doors.

I went out to enjoy the mist just as I liked it.

I walked out on the road winding up towards the hill and then down the slope on the other side as rain came again.

I rushed back.

Then it became dark and again I enjoyed the walk with the hoses looking like ghost houses and the lights blurred by the mist.

Next day I enjoyed going to the other side of the hill from where there was a sheer drop and the train line coming out of a tunnel. There were small pools of water and streams.

The road was slippery.

When it cleared up, I marveled at the high hills beyond with a peculiar rock called the Duke's nose.

Khandala was quiet and a good, small hill station with many cute bungalows, hill paths, valleys, grassy glens, rocky cliffs, sheer drops and waterfalls, as compared to the almost plains type commericalised Lonavala.

A place where I enjoyed the serene beauty of nature during the misty monsoons and longed for that ''aati kya khandala dream girl''

Hathi ka anda la...

Hi,

I was very little young when I went to khandala with my parents so actually I don't remember how was it and what

was it all about but I remember that much thing that

i really enjoyed that time...

but when I was coming to mumbai from bangalore while study, I was just feeling bore and wondering at door of train and I felt really happy when khandala arrived.. it has real beauty.. u can see falls from train itself.. and the atmosphere out there was really a nice one.. I even once thought of staying there for a while. but I had to go to mumbai and then to ahmedabad so I couldn't stay..

I think that was the view outside the city but I guess the inside view is not that nice. the city people and lots of tourists have spoiled the place... now I am in usa and won't be able to go there but I wish one day if I go back to india, I will be able to go to khandala and I will ask my gf or my wife,.... ae kya bolti tu,, aati kya khandala???

Ati kya khandala!!!!!!!!!!

This review is specially for sushil.

Well Khandala is a very beautiful hill station of maharashtra and certainly one of the best in India. It of course a place worth visiting coz of its scenic views and also the comparatively cheaper hill stations amongst the ones in India. My trip to Khandala was a memorable one and I would ask everyone to go atleast once to Khandala.I visited this place during feb as it is the most suitable time for a visit over here. The things Iliked were the scenic views and the thing I disliked is the amount of filth and dirth accumulated I some places.

I would suggest that when u visit this place do not go even near to the railings and edges of the iron rods as they are not strong and many incidents have occured in past.

I recemmend this trip for the whole family, but going with friends {if parents allow} is something entiely diffirent. So enjoy your trip.

Now it's just another Bhuleshwar
Jan 24, 2001 06:38 PM 5750 Views

Khandala, and it's next-door neighbour, were once upon a time, very good get-aways for Bombayites. That's 15 years ago. I remember when I was about 10 years old, my dad had a Morris Minor, and we went to Lonavla. It was in the middle of rainy season. When we reached there, the clouds had descended on the road; it was freezing cold. And clean, pure air.

Today, Lonavla and Khandala are no different than Bhuleshwar and Thakurdwar! Dirty, over-crowded, badly maintained, noisy, need I say more ?

Yet, we Bombayites have little choice. So if you do feel like going there, please don't go on a Saturday/Sunday. Plan to stay for 3 days, so that you can visit all the tourist spots.

All in all, no great shakes.

Woooooeful get-a-l-i-f-e
Good old memories...
Nov 11, 2000 03:15 AM 4080 Views

As I recall my memories from my adventurous journey to Khandala about 4 years back, I can only tell my good days from that trip. We started off in Bombay(maybe Mumbai... but I like Bombay better;-) and enjoyed seeing the natural green scenery of the innocent that lay in the Ghats. We really enjoyed the hilly and mountainous path during the trip as well as cute little animals that pass once in a while showing a sign of hospitality. When we reached there, we enjoyed playing cricket in the open land and slept outside in the due sun. During our journey back, we enjoyed same that we had while on our way to Khandala. It was an experience of life... an experience I would call a MUST for every Indian citizen/visitor.
