Khamoshi - The Musical Songs Movie Reviews

**The incredible volume of beautiful silence**
Sep 02, 2005 03:53 PM 4935 Views

What do you think when you hear the word khamoshi? A lone figure, in the middle of a large, dark room, with silent tears pouring down his/her cheeks? A haunted, deserted mansion where you can hear even a pin drop if there was one? Surely all of the things you imagine are cynical, because people tend to associate the word ‘khamoshi’ with misery.

But when I hear that word, I immediately imagine a silence that is so loud that it can be heard for miles around, but this isn’t a silence of grief. It’s a silence of tranquillity, of hope, of peace, of beauty and of music. Nearly every piece of music composed has a pause in it. Why? Because the composer is stuck for music? No, because silence is the most beautiful music. Khamoshi enhances a piece and makes it into a masterpiece.

Khamoshi: silence. Isn’t it ironic how this movie was a musical, and yet the name clearly refers to an era of tranquillity, of silence? Well, the mystery is cleared upon viewing the film, which had a story as beautiful as its songs, although the movie was not a huge success.

I wont go into the details of the film, because this review is on the music but this film revolves around the life of a sweet and innocent girl, whose life and surroundings are music, but her parents are unfortunately deaf, yet when she sings, they hear because the bond between them is so strong. The silence, which hits their ears continuously, is broken by the melodies of their daughter.

And that’s what the songs in this film are. Beautiful melodies, most of which are broken by the wonderful sound of silence, which still makes the song sound whole.

Aaj me upar:

This has to be a song with some of the most optimistic and sweetest https://lyrics. It is a song which shouts out, “I will not let anything put me down, today I am the happiest person alive.” The music is also lovely, in Kavita Krishnamurti and Kumar Sanu’s wonderful voices. The beat is fast, with a lilting melody that makes you want to stand up and start dancing right there, on the spot. The song expresses how with so many hardships in life, the girl is appreciating the more beautiful things and accepting everything as it comes and goes.

Aaj mai upar, aasma neeche,

Aaj mai aage, zamana hai peeche,

Tell me oh khuda, ab mai kya karu,

Chalu sidhi ki ulti chalu

Meaning:

Today I’m above, the sky is below,

Today I’m in ahead, the world is behind,

Tell me oh God, what shall I do,

Shall I walk ahead or go backwards

Aankhon me kya:

One of the faster songs in the album, it is still an amazing love song and was very well known when the film was released. It conveys the love hidden beneath the silence of a face, which speaks as loudly as a voice. It is a very nice song, sung by Kumar Sanu’s mellow voice, with nice music and instruments in the background ranging from a keyboard to tablas (Indian drums).

Aankhon me kya, Is dil se pucho zara,

Dekhu me kya maajra chehare ke piichhe,

Khaamoshi ke saaye rukhsaar pe kisi ke,

Aankhon me kya, Is dil se pucho zara

Meaning:

What’s in the eyes, just ask this heart,

I’ll see what the true state is behind the face,

The shadows of silence on someone’s face,

What’s in the eyes, just ask this heart.

Bahon ki darmiyan:

This is the most beautiful love song in the album, it expresses the unconditional love between two hearts which are meeting. It is wonderfully sung by Alka Yagnik and Hariharan, and has a slow and smooth beat which gives it a calming melody. It is a perfect song for a slow dance, and conveys that you don’t need words to express your feelings.

Bahon ki darmiyan, do pyar milrahe hai,

Jaane kya bole man, dole sunke badan,

Dhadkan bani zubaan

Meaning:

Two lovers meet with an embrace,

Who knows what we have said but the body sways with it,

A hearbeat has become a voice

Jaana Suno:

This is a lovely, fast beat track in the album, which is also a love song. This album is full of love songs, because the film is of an eternal love story, faced by the difficulties of fate. Sung by Udit Narayan, it is a very touching song of the conveyance of love from one to his beloved. It is also a faster song than others, but this does not spoil the beauty of the song.

Jaana suno, hum tum pe marthe hai,

Tumse mohabbat karte hai,

Chahat meri haseen koi guna nahi,

Yeh jo mohabbat hai, yehi tho ibahat hai

Meaning:

Sweetheart listen, I’m devoted to you,

I am in love with you,

My beautiful love is no sin,

This love is a form of divine worship

Yeh dil sun raha hai

This is a song which is sung in a concert in the film, but is a gorgeous love song in Kavita Krishnamurti’s soothing and lovely voice. I can never get tired of this song, no matter how many times I listen to it. This is another song in the film which says that words are not needed to convey the feelings of the heart, it is all in a heartbeat. The lyrics are beautiful, as is the music.

Yeh dil sun raha hai,

Tere dil ki suban,

Ae mere ham nashi

Tu jahan, mai wahan

Meaning:

The heart is listening,

To the voice of the heart,

Oh my darling,

Wherever you are I am

There are also two bonus tracks in the album, which are also very sweet songs: Saagar Kinare do dil, which is a lovely love song and Mausam ka Sargam, which is a song devoted to the magic of song.

Khamoshi ended up having some of the most beautiful love songs ever. You must have noticed though, that most of the lyrics say that you do not need a voice or hearing to listen to the heart, and I guess that is why the title of the film is Khamoshi.

Silence from the mouth, silence in the ears, but volume and beautiful voices in the heart.

And that’s exactly where these songs are from: the heart.
