Yes, God's own country!
Jun 01, 2006 10:28 PM 2249 Views

If you haven't visited Kerala so far, you are missing something. It is called God's own country and beauty of this phrase is that when you visit Kerala, you are constantly reminded of this phrase. The Greenery and the cleanliness steal your heart. The tea plantations transcend you to another world. Begin with Trivandrum and visit Kovalam beach. Rather stay there. There is no other beach parallel to it in India. Visit Kumarakom. Oh! Kumarakom, the backwaters still keep calling me and I long for visiting this untouched and virgin place again. In Thekkady, when the motor boat takes you to the middle of river Periyar, you say, how peaceful and serene this place is! Elephants come to the bank to drink water and play and you watch in astonishment. Munnar! I have already begun feeling the chill in the air. At night, you can listen to the Malabar whistler. It is a bird and whistles exactly like a man. It was 3.00 am and when I heard the whistle, I thought a waiter was whistling at my partner. And the waiter told an infuriated myself that I was lucky to have heard Malabar whistler. In Munnar, there is a flower Neelakurinji that blooms after 12 years! And it is GOING TO BLOOM THIS YEAR IN AUGUST! Lastly, never miss Kochi, the chinese fishing nets, the jew street, the commercial capital of India. Kerala, I love you and promise that I will come again and again and again.......

Kerala - God's Own Country

With the Arabian Sea in the west, the Western Ghats towering 500-2700 m in the east and networked by forty four rivers, Kerala enjoys unique geographical features that have made it one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Asia. An equable climate. A long shoreline with serene beaches. Tranquil streches of emerald backwaters. Lush hill stations and exotic wildlife. Waterfalls. Sprawling plantations and paddy fields. Ayurvedic health holidays. Enchanting art forms. Magical festivals. Historic and cultural monuments. An exotic cuisine... All of which offer you a unique experience. And what's more, every one of these charming destinations is only a two hour drive from the other. A singular advantage no other destination offers. Kerala, India's most advanced society : A hundred percent literate people. World-class health care systems. India's lowest infant mortality and highest life expectancy rates. The highest physical quality of life in India. Peaceful and pristine, Kerala is also India's cleanest State. For administrative purpose, the state of Kerala is divided into fourteen districts. Most of these districts offer all the tourism products typical of the State. It's up to you to decide whether Kerala is the most beautiful state of India. At least it is the greenest and is a melting pot of cultures, activities and other interesting sights. It is situated in the south of India with the Arabian sea along its western coast, that paved the way for international trade, and the mountain range of western Ghats on the east with its marvellous nature. It is the most literate state in India and travellers will soon find out that English is widely understood although the native language is Malayalam.

There are three airports: Calicut in the north, Kochi in the centre and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) in the south. Trivandrum is the state capital although it might not appear like that at first sight. It still has a rustic ambience. The Napier Museum has a good overview of the states history. From here, you can easily explore the marvellous beaches of Varkala and Kovalam.

A trip you can't refuse when you are in Kerala is leaving the small town of Kollam by boat and go by means of the backwaters, to the market town Alappuzha. You'll have a spectacular view of what life is like in that area. Kochi, the commercial capital, is a bit more to the north and has, besides its seaside front, a lot to offer for those interested in history. The old European church, Chinese fishing nets and the Jewish synagogue are only a few of the places of the former days.

Kerala kandoh ? ( Have you seen Kerala ?)
May 31, 2006 01:06 PM 3562 Views

There's nothing like having to write about a place and taking in some culture credits as well!Kerala, all through the year, provides one with endless and mesmerising sites and sounds - between sunrise and sunset. What makes it easy is- you dont seek it out - it's all around. Some places have so much of it - some..well,you've got to have an eye and a ear for it !! :)))

Hotels :

Depending on your purse strings - there is a wide range of hospitality services that you can pick and chose from.Personal favourites are always the TAJ GROUP of Hotels that offer reasonable rack rates (that dip marginally close to the monsoons) and have properties at Kumarakom,Varkala,Kovalam,Thekaddy and Cochin ( https://tajhotels.com/ ). Backwater delights are at Kumarakom and Cochin.

Seasoned tourists can take the liberties of checking out more hotels.

For those not familiar with the roads, language and the food - advisable to check into established or referred hotels and use their traveldesk tips to move around and see the location.

The Kerala State tourism ( https://keralastatetourism.com/ ) offers very good packages all year round.Online services are helpful and the services provided are value for money.

Time to Travel :

Unless you like to wade through knee deep gushing water - avoid the monsoons that begin in the state around mid June.Prior to this - you will have to contend with sultry summers right before the outbreak of the rains.I would best advise people to be in the state starting September-January.There's nothing like free movement,a breeze to egg you on,calm backwaters,a spread of sea food and electricity !!!

Budget:

Personally - the kerala toursim offers the best rates and services for the average economically minded family man.For those in the mood to splurge - the sky is the limit for you in the god's own country.

Culture :

Foreigners, though a regular site in the state can be subject to varied levels of discomfort. Those who dont follow the language can also be taken for a ride since local taxi drivers and autorickshaw drivers are almost always in for a quick buck. There is no concept of a fixed meter on the autos and one has to agree on a price before getting into an auto.Taxis are better but the same rule applies.Best to use the traveldesk services of the hotel one checks into - or refer to travel agents of repute.Again - this information can be got at the airport or the railway station where there are State Tourism Information Booths set up.

Food:

You defenitely need to dip your fingers into the pickles and sea food that the state is famous for. There are also authentic breakfast spreads like uppuma , appam and puttu that's a big favourite.Broken rice, sambar, aviyal, fish fry or chilli beef dry - with some curd in a banana leaf is the staple diet and way respectively to be at the table.

If you have a strong stomach lining - do check out the thattu kadas ( small tea shops ) that serve excellent coffee/tea during the day and bring out the tables in the evening to serve some mouth wathering home cooked dishes. Most of these shops are either on the state highway or close to a pan shop !!

Most environments here may not be clinically clean but as long as you're careful there should be no damage.Carry your own water every where you go.And keep paper napkins with you at all times, that will avoid having to go to the common wash area. You can always rinse off your hands lightly at the table,in the plate after you are done. This is acceptable in kerala :))

In General :

Kerala is a must see one time around

Places to visit would be Cochin, the kovalam beach in trivandrum,guruvayoor-simply to see the temple(restricted entry),the palaces etc.

This information is best collated at the kerala tourism site mentioned above

Avoid visiting in the summers and monsoons unless you are prepared to sweat and wade in not very clean water.

Dont miss an elephant ride or an opportunity to visit a local temple - there is a fabulous one in Trivandrum !!

Women must certainly take a look at the gold shops since they can bedazzle you with the worksmanship, weight and extend of gold used.(Assuming you like to check out gold jewellery)

Sarees - the kerala ONAM saree is an all time big sell. You can get it either in a two piece or 6 yards - in all kinds of material.Best to shop in Cochin or Trivandrum for these.Check out the Jayalakshmi,Parthas,Khadi Bandar chain of stores.

Best to look up places you would like to visit before you plan the trip and double check with friends/colleagues from kerala about the same.If they can give you contacts of someone to assist you while in the state - nothing like it.

Carry your own water and if you are heading out towards water bodies - and intend to spend evenings outside - watch out for the mosquitoes.

While at the hotel - look up the local new papers for dance or musical recitals ( kacheris ) It's a treat to watch the Kathakali dance ( local art form ) and hear out some carnatic musicans ( this is where the local contact comes in handy ).

Trains are frequent between towns and if you're travelling peak hours, watch out for the crowds and avoidable lavatories.Advisable to book in the A/C or travel by the air-conditioned state bus services.Taxis can be expensive - but again - your budget call

Check the Kerala state tourism site for details on what all the state has to offer.

Medical facilities are very good in the state - if you must know.

The average man can speak english so asking for directions is not a problem

Avoid travelling by night on the highways - you risk having to contend with some rash driving from heavy vehicles who ply mostly by night.

Donot purchase goods from the roads. The only thing that you may want to pick up is some interesting jewellery but always bargain and start at the lowest possible rate. Also is good to get into the 'act' of walking away from the vendor and coming back when he's lost the battle and agrees to your price

Donot contain yourself to visiting known towns - again - knowing a local contact who can put you up with a local family ( malayalees are hospitable as long as they know who it is that's coming home !!! )

Take a backwater cruise and stay/take a meal on a boat if you can

There's a time in the year for the Kerala Annual Boat Race - if you intend to be there - hold on very dearly to your belongings. The crowds can be crazy but the spirit in the air is infectious !!!!

All in all - a must see...and if my mom permits - you can drop by my home in Mavelikara as well. This is equidistant between Cochin and trivandrum and is on the NH47.Let me know if your interested.

The pluses of the place are - we're on an acre of land, surrounded by mango groves, coconut trees, two tamarind trees, pepper plants etc. There are four dogs - two pairs of labs and golden retrievers to receive you - there are four bedrooms and an inhouse cook who is also my mom :)))) She's good and her services run on the lines of the TAJ..if I may say so.

As many of us Mallus like to say...''vaa,istam agum !'' ( Come..you'll like it!!!)

Enjoy Kerala - it's a delicious dish.

This is the best time to visit Kerala
May 31, 2006 10:38 AM 2370 Views

Hi All,

I have just returned from a 10 days vacation from Kerala and let me tell you, this is the best time to visit this place. Temperature falling and mansoon hitting.

Its no doubt the greenest place we have in our country.

Few highlights you should not miss and plan for -

  1. Munnar - beautiful hill station, full of tea gardens, best I have seen so far.

  2. Thekkedy - Periyar wildlife sanctuary. I would suggest you go for trekking rather than usual boat ride available there.

  3. Kumarakoam - famous for back water. Dont miss the bird sanctuary via small boat. And dont forget to wear a cap and full sleves clothes while going to this place. It will prevent you from birds shit.

  4. Kovalam - the cleanest and beautiful beaches.

  5. Kanyakumari - this place has its own charm and morning and evening walks are very pleasures.

I would not suggest Cochin and Trivandrum.

If you are pure vegetarian, you will face food problems. In this case better to carry as much as you can.

I can provide you with more insight details if you are planning to visit this place. Write to me @ jn_amit@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

  • Amit.

Warning:--beauty will play havoc to your worries.
May 27, 2006 03:45 PM 2148 Views

Ever expected the giants to welcome you with water-showering trunks paying attention and regards to you???? I had not...before I saw God's beautiful creation uniquely known as ''kerela''.if you lie in the north and have very less or no idea how a completely different world could look like, this is the time to take a tour of the world's most deserving place to be....with ''to the brim'' filled uniqueness.are you planning to go to kerela in these vacations??? if not...than give it a thought and if yes, then I have got a sneak peek of the beauty of the place which will certainly leave you demand for more and more till the end of your tour and will harden the time you are spending before the tour begins....

The evenings seem reddish and wet-like and give a clean or washed sence.the roads seem so clean and washed that you like to walk without your shoes on...

travelling and moving:-

the rail network so strong so that you need not to go for anything else for travelling.the buses so convinient that they touches the minutest part of the state.the buses are classified on the basis of spee, normal, fast and very fast or lightening fast and the more you are speed crazy the more you will have to pay.this state has backwater canals and public boats which are one of the most convinient way of travelling the waterways.

attractions:-

--:champakulam boat race:--

with its winding stretches of backwaters and rivers, kerela is famous for its native boat races held in different parts of the State in the harvest season. The Champakulam boat race is the first one during this season and has a tradition of centuries.

The festivities include spectacular water floats, decorated boats, Vanchipattu - the song of the oarsmen and the most thrilling Chundanvallom race. Chundans are a category of boats over 100 feet in length with raised prows. They were first called snake boats by the foreign rulers.

--:Aanayoottu:--

The ritualistic annual Aanayoottu ceremony, which takes place at the Vadakkumnatha Temple in Thrissur is an interesting event. Aanayoottu literally means feeding the elephants with specially prepared food, which is valued for its high medicinal value. This medicinal concoction is regarded vital for enhancing the well being of the elephants. this event is organised at Vadakkumnatha Temple, Thrissur .

At this ceremony, elephants are lined up on the first day of the Malayalam month of Karkidakam (July-August). The month of Karkidakam is considered ideal for all kinds of rejuvenation therapies in Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine.

Nearest railway station: Thrissur, a few minutes drive from the Temple.

Nearest airport: Cochin International Airport, about 58 kms from Thrissur town.

--:ochirakali:--

This is a unique place of worship, which has neither a structure to house an idol nor an idol to worship. The abstract principle of the Parabrahmam or the Universal Consciousness is the presiding deity here.

Ochira Kali, the annual festival at the Parabrahma temple highlights the martial skills of the participants. The historical background of the festival is linked with the erstwhile rulers of the princely states of Kayamkulam and Ambalappuzha. The rulers of Kayamkulam and Ambalappuzha are said to have fought a battle at this place, and the festival is conducted to commemorate the historical event. On these days martial displays are presented in the morning, turning the padanilam (battle field) into an arena of action-packed artistry. Men irrespective of age engage in mock duels wielding wooden sticks in their hands on a vast ground filled with water up to the knee level.that was awesome experience.

The two major airports, to handle international travelers serve the purpose well. Cochin and Trivandrum. The Cochin (now called Kochi) is some what in the middle of the state while Trivandrum (or Thiruvananthapuram) is in the south, both close to the Arabian sea. Accommodations are plenty to suit everyone’s pocket, and the food is cheap comparing to our western standards. As an example: Three of us had a sumptuous lunch at a first class eatery in Cochin, and it cost us only Rs.216 or just $4.00, (while an average meal in Delhi cost me Rs.1500) There are restaurants specializing in vegetarian dishes as well. Try the masala dosai with sambar, or some idli with chutney for breakfast. If you like exotic fish, try Kerala’s own ’’Karimeen’’ roast or a plate of prawn curry.Rice is the staple food here, mostly imported from Andhra Pradesh or Madras (Chennai) as the local cultivation of this grain is sadly diminishing.

the internet cafes are at a hand's distance from every place and the charges are rs 10/- per hour and this makes the wind flow to the outer regions swiftly.

really if you need mental peace and an ultimate once-in-a-lifetime experience then I say...and the world too thet you must go forth and forward to see the place.

Kumarakom and the Backwaters
May 22, 2006 07:17 PM 4428 Views

Kerala indeed IS ''God's Own Country'' We were pleasantly surprised that all the tourist literature and photos were 100% true .. actually none of tehm do justice to it's beauty.

Kochi airport is the most beautiful airport in India, and the landing, in a clearing amongst cocout trees is amongst the best we've seen in the world.

The Backwaters Houseboat cruise was among the best treats - you get a houseboat all for yourself, with 3 attendants who attend to every need of yours, still are inconspicuous t give you your privacy, as teh boat winds it's way through meandering brooks, along houses of the Kerala backwaters. It ties up to a coconut tree on a desolate island in Vembanad lake for the evening. The early morning sight f fisermen casting tehir nets close to you as birds of all kinds chirp in the island.. is the best way to wake up!

Oh - did I tell you... the food is amazing... and the boat has better facilities than most hotels! Costs 6000 rs. per night (actually noon to 10 am), all inclusive and every bit worth it.

We took a cruise on Rainbow houseboats but teh other appear equally good.

Here are pictures of Kumarakom, the Backwaters and Waterscapes -

<http>https://geocities.com/jabberwockygreen/ kumarakom.html</http>

KTDC Waterscapes is the best kept secret of Kumarakom.... with canals cutting the resort, luxurious rooms raised on stilts (Much like Thailand), in the midst of lush greenery and hugging (it's on the other side of the fence) the Vembanad /Kumarakom bird sanctuary.

Amazingly beautiful birds perch on your balcony all day, and you get fantastic views of the lake. Taj is next door but does not have the proximity to greenery.

Costs at about 4000 rs. per night, are a steal... some packages are even ore competitively priced.

Kerala - land of Kera
May 19, 2006 03:20 PM 1852 Views

Kerala is sorrounded by the Western Ghats on the east, and the Arabian Sea on the West, Kerala is one of the beautiful states in India. It is a paradise with a view of waving coconut trees (KERA) palms and wide sandy beaches, It is a thin strip of coastal territory which slopes down from the mountain ghats in a cascade form. The main attraction here is the green vegetation and the beauty which has named her GODS OWN COUNTRY.

Foreigners first visited Kerala for the purpose of Trade and till now Kerala is a place where Corporates use to test their newly invented products. If the product has famed in Kerala market, it can be marketed anywhere.

Kerala is the land of spices, rubber, tea, coffee etc. Paddy fields, reddish hills, sandy beaches, back waters and valleys.

The main thing to be noticed in Kerala is the climatic conditions. Always, she provides a very balmy weather.

The famous Portugese traveller Vasco da Gama visited Kerala seeking spice trade and he landed the famous Kappad Beach at Kozhikode in 1498.

The famous Varayadu (rare species) is seen in Munnar, a beautiful place in Kerala. Very famous temples and historical universities like Kanthalloorsala etc and Vizhinjam harbour etc provides totality.

The Padmanabha Temple in Trivandrum is a very important place where foreigners visit....

Pune India
Poovar Island Retreat, Kerala
May 05, 2006 10:38 AM 2523 Views

God’s own country???...well almost!

A boat ride, sandy shores, waves lapping gently as you lie floating…. Songs hum in your head as the wind caresses you softly and the scent of wet mud rises to your call…. Esoteric you might think. Not impossible though. And certainly not a dream as four days at the Poovar Island Resort, Kerala proved.

The first sight of Thiruvananthapuram (the main connecting point) was beaches and coconut trees.....with houses by the sea, reminding me of a devotional song that used to be softly sung by my ‘mallu’ teacher in school-''Chethi Mandram Thulssi...'' in honour of Lord Guruvayurappan. The journey to the resort saw more sand and lots of colour, which was apparent in the bananas being sold on the road-they were yellow, green and yes red too! We got down at a pick up point, by the riverside. Moments later, a speedboat from the resort arrived and carried us over a calm green expanse of the famed Kerala backwaters.Escorting us on both sides were stretches of coconut groves rising from 4ft to 15ft -and one could smell freshness in the air mixed with the subtler magic of silence- simply amazing!

The backwaters opened out revealing a white sandy beach opposite, which became the dividing line between the backwater lagoon and the sea. At one point, very delicately, the land submerges as clear and saline water mingle with each other.. The boat stopped at a group of cottages and steps led to the great hall and reception all in wood with a huge sloping roof. Our room turned out to be one of the cottages on the bay…and better still, was a floating paradise! (The resort offers stay in either a land cottage, which lies beyond the reception and swimming pool, or a floating cottage - on the backwaters. The floating units are constructed on hollow light weight concrete hulls. They are air conditioned and fully equipped with all modern amenities.) The staff is very competent and speaks excellent English and have been taught to chat and converse with the guests to make them feel comfortable. Our attendants were Rajanikanth (apparently after the great movie star whose done Bloodstone and is famous in China---didn’t know about this) and Pradeep (who said that it is possible one day the float might loosen and we might find ourselves in Maldives...which I wouldn’t have minded one bit, in fact was praying for it)..... but at the same time, was very content too being where I was- maybe it was the romantic company... though I guess the place added that extra zing!

The Poovar Island Resort offers guests complimentary airport transportation, laundry facilities, 24-hour front desk and room services, dry cleaning services, health club and safety deposit boxes.A full service business center is available onsite to cater to the needs of the business traveler. The resort is equipped with an air-conditioned conference hall capable of accommodating 10-80 people. For guests dining needs, there is Western, Asian and Indian Cuisine to choose from, and two bars in addition to service at your hammock.

A trip to Kerala without the legendary Ayurveda massage was unthinkable! So the next afternoon was spent on rejuvenating all our senses at the resort's Ayurveda Centre, one of the oldest and renowned in the state. Some great food and a relaxing canoe ride down the backwaters at sunset, completed the serene picture. The resort organises a day trip to Thiruvananthapuram, wherein one can visit the famous Padmanabhan temple that has the awe-inspiring reclining 18 ft idol of Lord Padmanabhan , the Palace of the Travancore Maharaja (all done up in rose and teak wood) and now a museum. Also a must -visit to the Raja Ravi Verma Museum which has within the same complex the zoo, a reptile park and an art gallery. Culture and beauty intertwine to enliven the mind...

And to enliven our hearts, nature played a big part- for on the way back, it rained!!!! Suddenly the place smelt differently. Various smells like sandalwood, flowers, etc mingled with that of the rain.....the heavy smell of tobacco + wet mud created a very potent atmosphere for romance... Saw a mind-blowing sunset view whilst sitting on the verandah of our 'floating home'.....the waves crashed against the beach opposite and the waves kept getting higher as the sun dropped lower.......our cottage slightly danced to the music of the full moon and sea....as we did too...:)

The Resort is great for family and couples alike. There are loads of options for sight-seeing as well as sports. Summer time is fine for basking in the sun, but it can get very hot and not all can bear the same. Winter is recommended as the ideal time to visit. Weekend Package Deals are also available.

GOD'S OWN COUNTRY - KERALA
Mar 27, 2006 01:14 PM 2226 Views

Definitely, GOD'S OWN COUNTRY. This is what I can say.

My experience with Kerala has been EXCELLENT and I would like to go there again & again.

I visited Kerala in the month of Nov 2005. I took a flight from delhi to bangalore and then an onward train to Ernakulam.

My tour was organized by https://tourkerala.org. Picked up from the Railway station, we stopped at our hotel Sealord in Cochin.

Excellent places to see

Munnar

Alleppy

Komarokom

Periyar- Thekkady

Sabrimala

Houseboats are worth a nights stay. Excellent food

Backwaters are an amazing phenomenon of Kerala - a necklace of lagoons lakes, canals and rivers that run through the length of this beautiful land. In fact much of Kerala's uniqueness lies in its backwaters - found nowhere else in the world.

Visit to the backwater destinations of Kumarakom, Kollam and Kozhikode can be a most rewarding experience. The lagoons at these destinations with their spectacular view and fringed by coconut trees have been featured in travel books all over the world. No journey to the backwaters is complete without a stay on board a ''Kettuvallam'' or a houseboat which takes you on a journey through the length and breadth of the lagoons and waterways !

The Western Ghats mountain ranges make up an impressive fortress all along Kerala. These mountains ranging from the southern tip of Kerala all the way to Mumbai, on the western coast of India have been a natural barrier in the eastern border of Kerala and a helping hand to reap the bounties of both the Southwest and the Northeast monsoons.

The hill stations of Kerala have drawn the attention of tourists for their agreeable climate and proximity to the wildlife sanctuaries. These hill station ranges are also home to most of world's spices and have over the centuries attained a certain mystique. The principal hill stations are at Wayanad in North Kerala, Munnar and Thekkady in Central Kerala and Ponmudi in South Kerala.

The elephant is the symbol of Kerala, signifying the deep links that the forests have on the lives of the people of Kerala. These forests have been closely associated with the customs, traditions, and social life of Kerala for centuries. The forests here are indeed some of the most magnificent and varied found anywhere in the world.

A number of excellent Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks have been created to protect the forests and the multitudes of animals therein. Periyar Tiger Reserve, Silent Valley National Park, Eravikulam National Park … are some among the best managed sanctuaries in India

Kerala has long stretches of silvery beaches for those interested in the Sun . . . Most of it is still in a pristine stage, giving a chance to the wanderer to enjoy these stretches in relative peace. Kovalam to the south of capital Thiruvananthapuram, Varkala, Cherai, and Alleppey are some of the best beaches on the Southern stretches of the state.

The beaches to the North are beautiful, unspoiled and not too crowded. The districts of Kannur and Kasargod have many miles of unbroken silvery beaches. Some of these have been developed into resorts, but the vast majority is still there for the travelers interested in Solitude and Sun!

Ayurveda, harmony of body, mind and soul . . . it's a unique, indispensable branch of medicine. Ayurveda believes in the treatment of not just the affected part, but the individual as a whole, making it the natural way to refresh yourself, eliminate all toxic imbalances from the body and thus regain resistance and good health. Kerala is the land of Ayurveda.. Kerala's equable climate, natural abundance of forests with a wealth of herbs and medicinal plants and the cool monsoon season are best suited for Ayurveda's curative and restorative packages.

It is worth going again & again

Kerala, my experience!
Jan 22, 2006 04:52 AM 2184 Views

It was the winter of 2004, nice and warm enough but not too hot or cold. I went back from USA to Hyderabad to go on a honeymoon trip to Kerala with my wife. It was just after Diwali. Enjoyed the festival with friends and family and then set off to Kerala via train. It was a fun ride to Cochin.

I had all the vouchers etc. already printed out that were sent to me by my travel agent. The first stop was Cochin. There was not much to see in Cochin in my opinion except the dock yard which was not much. So we went straight to the office of a friend of my dad from the railway station and got into a car to drive upto Munnar. The journey to Munnar was awesome. But I have to warn the weak hearted that it gets pretty rough out there. The first few kilometers were OK. Then it was all a steep ghat road and me and my wife had to hang on tight almost always when the driver was taking those nastily dangerous and narrow curves with ease, as though we were absent. GOD, I had to throw up once, my wife felt nauseated twice and we constantly felt as though we were on top of the vibrating sewing machine going on and on.

Finally after about 4 or 5 hours if I remember right, we got to munnar. Oh that beauty was just spell binding. We went straight to hotel tall trees. I have to tell you, this was one very nice resort. Beautiful and HUGE cottages, with one hell of a balcony view. Awesome top of the hill restaurant with amazing views and very nice food. Anyways, thats where we spent about 3 days. We roamed around the various attractions like the TATA tea gardens, boating at the DAM, echo point and so on. It was just spectacular.

Then at the end of the three days, we started to come back downhill and the first stop if I rember it right was Thekkady. We stayed at a hotel called Caramom County. Nothing spectacular, but some of the attractions were spice gardens, spice stores and some shopping. The spice gardens was awesome, that was the first time we were able to see various spice plants. We stayed there for about a day or so.

And then we started downhill again and the next stop I think was Allepy. This is where all the house boating is famous. We rented a small houseboat. There were three people who were driving it. The food was cooked on board and we got to taste authentic Kerala style fish and other dishes. It was a bit hot and the smell was not the best. At night, we were really frustrated with the mosquitos and insects. We also wished there was AC. So overall, the experience was OK. Keep these in mind before you get on one. SO that was another day and night stay.

Then we went on to goto a place called Kumarakom. This is where all the lake side hotels and resorts are. We parked at a hotel called Whispering Palms. This was one very nice hotel. We went on a sunset cruise in the evening. There was a gorgeous lakeside view, make sure you book in advance and ask for a lake view room, these are usually taken. We sat there looking at the lake in the evening before the cruise. After that we swam a little in the swimming pool  which was another nice feature. The restaurant was also very good, again, the problem was insects. But the food was nice. Some other attractions were the Peiryar Tiger Sanctuary. Make sure you get there early morning around at least 6AM. Then take a ride on the boat. You may get lucky and see some elephants, let alone tigers. We stayed there for may be 2 days.

I think at the end of it, we ended up spending half a lakh Rs, but we stayed at the best of the best as we wont be doing this again anyway. Then we proceeded back to Cochin and then got on the train, and went back to Hyderabad. The whole experience was one of a kind and I definitely recommend Munanr to anyone before it gets too corwded and commercialized, hurry up!

Enjoy it while you are on earth!

God's Own Country !!!

Kerala-God’s Own country

It was Kashmir before.Somebody had said that it is paradise on earth. Kerala is paradise of south India. It has the best natural beauty. The combination of hill stations, beaches, water resorts and reasonably good commercial hubs makes it best tourist destination.

I have visited Kerala three times on my vacations & I have found major changes in all the three trips. When I visited Kerala for the first time it was raw in service and beauty was virgin. The traveling in the remote areas was difficult and there were hardly good hotels to stay. You can only stay in a city/town of a nearby tourist place and visit the surrounding areas. The food was cheap and good. The local residents were also not ready to manage or handle tourists.

On my second visit two years back I saw total transition from the first visit. The best locations were really developed well with the best hotels. The roads were excellent and the main business was all around tourists. The people were still friendly for tourists and had not still understood the scope of tourist business. The language is a big barrier as no body understands any other language than Malayalam.

This Diwali I went again to Kerala. I could see the total transition. I had gone on the northern part of Kerala around Calicut area. The beauty landscaping changes but beauty is same every where from south Kerala to north Kerala. From Trivandrum’s beach beauty and coconuts to Cochin’s Tea estates and spices and further north to Coffee plantations it is all very beautiful. With light drizzle shower it makes it more pretty. The resorts are getting better and better. More and varied options are available. Exorbitantly priced resorts to home stays are available in plenty. Population on roadside is same. All the areas are thickly populated. The signages on the road side are hardly visible and if found are in local language only. The people are not eager to show the road and help in any regards. We found most of the houses closed, may have shifted to other parts of the country and gulf for work.Only senior citizens were visible. The resorts/hotels have become very commercial.Preferential treatment for the `Firangis’(It is very much there in Rajasthan and Goa). The resorts try to cut corners buy saving on small things.Instead of hospitality they run it mechanically. Ideally if you go to Matheran, and visit Regal or Rugby you will find people more than happy to talk, share experiences and even will take suggestions for food. The worst was during the trip in house boat during night, our boat was raided by thief but fortunately due to wooden flooring we could hear the noise & got up and theft ran away. This was the least expected in Kerala and in house boat.

Overall I feel the `God’s own country’ is truly God’s own country-Paradise if you consider for beauty but people are still not geared up for the boom they are seeing due to the tourist rush. It is surely a place to visit and I will say earlier the better. Before Munnar becomes Ooty or any commercial hill station be there.

Kochi - gateway to backwaters.
Nov 29, 2005 02:11 PM 2431 Views

This is my first review about Kerala. Before this my reviews are about cities in TN.

In MS I was looking for review on Cochin before visiting this place couldnt find much helpful review so I m writing this review on my experience. I visited Cochin last week. Cochin is a place where Arabian Sea, Vembandu lake and Periyar river meets. You can have a experience of sea and backwaters both.

How to reach

========

Best way is by trains from Bangalore or Chennai just a overnight journey.

Cochin Airport is far from city around 30kms.

About Cochin

========

Cochin now Kochi is a island, and mainland is called Ernakulam.

From Ernakulam there is frequent ferry service to islands.

Main islands are Willington (Man made) , Mattancherry, Fort Cochin and Vypeen. There is another island called Bolghatty which had a palace now turned to Hotel.

Hotels

==

There are many hotels I heard around 2000+ in Ernakulam and Cochin area.

Many five star hotels are in Willington , Bolghatty and Ernakulam.

Hotel rates are little steep.

Good budget hotel Grand, Avenue Regent, Bharat all are near downtown and Main Jetty area.

My suggestion stay in Ernakulam and tour the place rather than stay in island.

Main Attraction

===========

Fort Cochin and Mattenchery has colonial environment and lot of places to see.

St Francis Church , Fishing Net,

Jew Town, Jew Synagogue, Santa Cruz Ballisca etc.

My suggestion stay in Fort Cochin beach near fishing nets around sunset you will love that.

Cherai Beach in Vypeen island is very good beach though bit far.

Back water cruises are available from any tour agent or through KTDC. KTDC counters available in station, Marine drive area.

You can take a ferry from main boat jetty to Alleppy and get a Backwater ride experience in cheap.

Backwater trip from KTDC

====================

3 hrs trip cost Rs. 350.

8 hrs trip cost Rs 650 including food.

8 hrs tour is in Motor Boat where as 3 hrs tour is in Country Boat in Village Canals.

Local sight seeing tour is charged Rs 100.

Shopping place

==========

MG Road , Marine Drive and Broadway all are good places to buy and near to each other.

Autowallahs are quite good and helping and dont charge much.

Food

=

Lot of good eateries available in marine drive and near Fort Cochin beach.

Mumbai INDIA
Munnar rocks
Sep 21, 2005 10:16 PM 2295 Views

I would like to recommend Munnar as one of best place for a calm getaway.

Also would like to recommend KTDC Tea County resort.

We had chosen Munnar as my honeymoon destination mainly because of proximity (we are from kerala) and because it is not as crowdy as Kodai or Ooty. We wanted a place where which has cool climate and which is not that commercialized. I had narrowed down to Gangtok, Vythiri and Munnar. Atlast due of lack of leave, we zeroed down to Munnar. And we did not repent the decision!

TIme of our visit was last week of August and yes it was raining. I would advice one to choose anytime after Sept since you would find it rainy then. We got chance to visit some nearby places.

I would suggest that incase you are coming for a short visit (or honeymoon trip), you can try Rajamala(reach there by 2-3PM), Top point and boating near echopoint.

We got a wonderful stay at KTDC Tea County. My friend had earlier recommended this place and I found it to live up to the expectations. It is surprising how KTDC has inproved its services (I guess they had to lest they would loose out on competition). There are 3 types of accomodation - Regular, Deluxe and Suite. I would recommend Regular or Deluxe. If you have enough and more money to spend on you can go in for SUITE but I did not find that worth the money. Rooms are in range of 2500 - 4000 (inclusive of all food that was what we had opted for). I would recommend you go in for option including food since food is too good. The chef is helpful if you are not from Kerala and want to try out kerala item.

The manager Mr. Baiju was helpful if you want to arrange tourist taxi to check out places within Munnar and other information.

Tips

Best time to go : From Sept first week onwards

It is better to carry some cash (though KTDC takes in credit cards) you would require it.

Best place to buy authentic tea products is Kannan devan Tea Plantations Factory Outlet (anyone can direct you there) It is near the bridge. It is authentic and quality is good.

If you are too much troubled by cold, carry some wollen clothes (i.e. during Aug - Sept time).

Enjoy ...

KERELA: HOTTER THAN THE HEAT
May 21, 2005 09:20 PM 3409 Views

KERELA GENERAL: DOWN MEMORY LANE.

A review dedicated to my course mates from Kerela

If you arrive in Kerela and ask to go to Kochi, you will be surprised to know there be no place called Kochi out here! I am not kidding!

Kerela has beaten Goa and other places in India as the most preferred tourist destination. When I lived there, 1972-73, that was not so. Kerela was better known for Marxism, strikes, lock outs, violence, rusting industries and a laid back style of living. Of course, there was tremendous greenery all round.

ERNAKULAM/FORT KOCHI/WELLINGDON ISLAND

We were starting our Navy careers and our batch of Sub Lieutenants were destined to spend a year under training at INS Venduruthy, year 1972, located on the most beautiful Wellingdon Island. Later I had tenures from 1977-80 out here. My wife and kids loved living in this hot and humid equatorial climatic condition,

The weather was always hot and humid and during monsoons, the place was awash most days, heavy showers, followed by hot sunshine and heavy showers again. It’s pretty tough living in a hot and humid place. Your energy levels go down the drain pretty fast. Most evenings, in the Officers Mess, we drank beers, which caused dehydration and further misery.

But of course we had a terrific time.

MATTANCHERRY AND ERNAKULAM CHANNEL

The most beautiful and picturesque port in India is the Mattancherry and Ernakulam channel. It is sheer delight and pleasure navigating in and out of this channel. There are plenty of Chinese fishing nets on both sides of the channel. Small picturesque islands dot all around. Vypin Island in particular is hot with tourists for the coir handicraft products that are exported the world over. All products are made WITHOUT THE USE OF ELECTRICITY or mechanical driven devices!

Then there is the beautifully maintained Jewish synagogue, which is more than 100 years old, although all the Jews have migrated to Israel.

Fort Kochi is another great place to chill out. There are great eating places for sea food along the channel. These are open to air joints, like dhabbas, very popular with all tourists. The cooks can fix you crabs, lobsters, prawns, the local fish Kareemein. Super fish, any style you want. Kerela style or Italian style or the French way. Liquor can be had but will be served in steel glasses, cos these joints do not have liquor licensee. We always carried our own booze. After sunset, it’s a lovely to see the ships entering and leaving harbor while you eat the fish and sip your whiskey or whatever.

Ernakulam city is perhaps the richest city in India in terms of per capita income. The Gulf money pours into this city by the planeloads. They have a private International Airport near Allway. It is a beautiful airport, clean, efficient and tourist friendly. Not like Sahar in Mumbai, which is pathetic.

TRAVEL

We had many batchmates from all over Kerela. Pavithran (Pavi) from near Trivandrum, Kuruvilla from Alleppey, Giri from Thekkadey….and many more. We would just drive away on our mobikes to their homes with or without our batchmates, most times without. And we were treated royally!

Pavi’s father was a big time landlord. Four of us arrived at his picturesque village without Pavi and without any invitation or prior notice. Beautiful old style bungalow surrounded by coconut trees, rice fields and rubber plantations.

Pavi’s Dad and Mom could not speak any language other than Malyalum. We four, Ceaser, Nandu, Madhu, Prasad could speak all languages (Punjabi, Marathi, Oriya, Bengali) except Malyalum!

No problems! Pavi’s Dad and Mom treated us like Royalty!! They were thrilled that we had driven down all the way to meet them. Communications after a while was not an issue. They jabbered in Malyalum, we jabbered in English. We pretended to understand each other perfectly!

My pal Ceasar pulled out an Old Monk Rum bottle before dinner and offered Dad a drink too. Initially he was aghast, but he adjusted. He declined but no problems with us enjoying our drinks with fried fish and great Kerela food. Ceaser was a voracious eater. Pavi’s mom was a great cook.

She wept profusely when we drove off the next morning to Kovalam. She packed lots of food for us. Dad placed an envelope in my hand. I thought it was a letter for his son. Instead, what I found inside was HARD CASH!!!!!!!!!!

So as and when we got leave, we visited wild life sanctuary of Thekaady, the great rubber plantations, the tea gardens around Munnar and the backwaters of Alleppey. Most places, we had foster parents to live with, like Pavi’s parents.

MY RECCOMENDATIONS

Visit Kerela during November/December/January. Other months are bad.

Hotels and food is expensive. The tourism industry focuses on well oiled tourists with 10 credit cards and no budgets. But you will get good value for money, no matter what you end up spending.

Besides the places above, Covalum Beach, Munnar tea gardens, Thekkadey wild life parks are super super places.

If you want to suba dive, snorkel, take a trip of 3 days to Lakshadweep Islands. You can travel by the ship MV Akbar. Cheap fares.

AM GOING TO KERELA AGAIN

Just because my daughter………….that is a secret I will tell you after two months!

Adois.
