Kazhchavattom - Lohithadas

Lohithadas is considered as one of the top three screenplay writers Malayalam film industry has witnessed so far, along with Padmarajan and MT Vasudevan Nair. At a time the Malayalam film industry was facing a recession it was the script bank of Lohithadas which hold the industry from falling. Kazhcavattom is a small book written by Lohithadas with events, thoughts and feelings directly from heart.

In the book, Lohithadas shares with us how he become a drama writer, a film writer and finally as a film director. We can see a road not so wide or rosy but a road which took too long to take the talented writer to the stage. When a great performer arrives late, lose is more for the audience. The audience has accepted the writer with all hearts where his name itself was sufficient to decide whether to watch a film or not. Then from the moment the writer turned a director, he felt more arrows than flowers directed at him. Even then, the book gives a glimpse of a proud film maker.

The writer feels the presence of death in each corner of the life and we can see its presence in each turning page. The pain of separation is one of the deepest for those who love with heart. Veteran actors like Bahadoor, Sankarady, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Music directer Ravindran, Writer Director Bharathan, Padmarajan the list of deaths witnessed by the writer not ends with that. The writer too will go to the world early which he always felt with pain but not without keeping many a golden moments from films. The writings in the book is sufficient a stamp which we can witness the pain the author takes from such separations.

It is doubtful that the state or even the nation ever recognises the genius for his talent. He do got his fame and name, true. Then, it was too late and the moment he changed to direction the same people who had praised him deserted him. We can see a soul which is hoping for recognition and the regrets when his due is not received. He doesn't make a big issue out of that but we can see the mark of pain in his heart. In author's own words, 'for a true artist, it is a flower of congratulation which is more worthwhile than money or position' but we were shy to give it to him. As a matter of fact the writer was not a go getter, but a shy person who assume that it is not to be searched and find out but to wait to receive. In a world of 'smart' writers and media talented may not feel recognised and Lohi's life is an example of that.

The lonely Childhood and adolescence, glimpses of romance and strength of friendship, ignorance and lack of recognition, Lohi shares a lot of close to heart events in this small book. A very good read which will make the dear writer director even more closer to our heart, Kazhchavattom is a must read for all those who know Lohithadas and his works.
