Ask any Mumbaikar what his/her favourite fast food is and nine times out of ten the answer will be Vada Pav, and that is an open secret.
What is Vada Pav and why is it so famous :
Vada Pav is the desi version of the burger. Spicy potato sabzi is coated with besan and then deep fried. That is the vada. The vada is then put in a pav along with chutney (mostly garlic chutney) and served piping hot.Eureka!! Your favourite snack is ready. It is a very popular road side snack in Mumbai, as it is very filling and light on your pocket too. You will find a vada pav gaadi on almost every street in Mumbai. Most of these vada pav gaadis, found at strategic locations like outside offices, school, railway stations etc. score negative points in hygiene and cleanliness. However, there is one vada pav place that scores over all the vada pav gaadis, and that is Jumbo King.
Jumbo King Vada Pav(referred as JK hereafter)
JK is a fast food chain that ?pledges to make the humble vada pav world class? *.Started about three years ago, this fast food chain specializes in vada pav. No rocket scientist brain required to figure out the menu, but they also have variants of the vada pav, like the ?diet jumbo king? and ?cheese jumbo king?. The outlet that I visited is situated right at the entrance of Andheri station on the east side. I must admit, I was a bit surprised to see the people there in aprons and serving the vada pav wearing plastic gloves. They also have this steel frying equipment, somewhat similar to the one you see at McDonalds. This is something that you don?t get to see at the gaadi. They (JK) plan to make the vada pav as popular as the burger. And they have introduced the franchisee concept, (which is something unheard of in the road side snacks business), something similar to McDonalds. A grand expansion plan of having at least 1000 outlets is the next target.
Positive Points
Reasonable Price :The Jumbo King Vada Pav comes at a reasonable price. At Rs. 5/- for one, it is slightly costlier than its counterpart available on the street. But, you don?t mind paying the extra rupee as long as you get a better quality vada pav.
Cleanliness :The place (JK Andheri East) was clean. At least I found it clean on the outside. The people who serve are in aprons, caps and wear gloves.
Location : **Most of the outlets are located outside railway stations. Weary office goers, after a tiring day at work flock to these outlets just before entering the battlezone (a.k.a railway platform).
Brand Name : **Works every time. I have seen (and know a few) people who had never eaten a vada pav in their life and always used to lecture us on the unhygienic food, eat the the JK outlet.
Negative Points
Pav size :Slightly bigger than the usual pav. No wonder they call it Jumbo! But for those who have grown up on the road side vada pav (10% pav + 90% vada), this seems a bit of a let down.
Going by the popularity of JK, it seems that the common man?s food has come a long way and is surely going places.
P.S : The vada pav is my favourite snack too, and though this review is about Jumbo King, I felt I should include the name of my favourite non JK gaadi. If you live or work or even are familiar with the Vile Parle east area, then the place to get the yummiest vada pav is the Parle Tilak canteen.
