Jumbo King - Andheri East - Mumbai

Vadapav is the best fast food and I am an insane fan. Being a Mumbaikar we generally favorvadapav for a brisk chomp. In each corner or galli you will locate a celebrated nearby vadapav joint. Kind sized ruler was recently opened close to my classes. I generally used to be eager while going after addresses at night, with less pocket cash I had extremely restricted options. Me and my companions once considered giving it a visit. When we entered the place it was not spotless, mosquitoes lounging around might be a result of blustery season. At that point while requesting the vadapav, I saw that he took out the pattice from the icebox and after that warmed it. In spite of the fact that the request got was decent and delicious, yet at the same time it will dependably be a point that they served stale vadas.

Jumbo King

The Jumbo King outlet at Andhri east is right outside the station asphalt. It is not by any means a spot to eat, dissimilar to numerous Jumo King outlets where you can stand and make the most of your Indian Burgers with the red and green chatni they give.

A portion of the outlets even have seats to sit and appreciate the wadapavs, yet here there isn't such course of action. It is even more a shop, where you request that the seller give you your decision of wadapav, pay, gather your request, and leave. In this way, there isn't generally a feel that I can discuss. The area is in an exceptionally swarmed zone and in this way has numerous supporters, going from all agre bunches.

Unhygienic, Do Not eat here.

I had the worst experience yesterday at this Jumboking vada pav joint in Andheri. It is right outside the railway station in the east side. I went here to pack a vada pav for myself, I ordered the chese grill vada pav. The stall is quite small and hence you can see what they prepare and how. You wont believe what I saw and that is the end to my Jumboking loyalty.

The person who was assembling my vada pav was totally unaware of what he was doing and that I was seeinghim, firstly he was not wearing hand gloves or a cap on his head. he literally scratched his sweaty back with his bare hands then used his same hands to continue making my vada pav! that was Gross!

I felt like vomiting there and then! such behaviour is not at all tolerated by anyone! Specially when food is concerned! I took the burger and threw it in the next dustbin. I thought like complaining but I did not have the time, as I had to catch a train.

Seeing such a thing I wont dare eat at any jumboking now! it seems like they do not standard training and hygiene lessons in the franchise system. They must fix this ASAP. People can fall ill with such lapses. Not done guys!

I will not recommend jumboking to anyone. School kids, office goers everyone eats the vadapav and they are all at risk.

Munch Indian burger while travling in the train

The Jumbo King outlet at Andhri east is right outside the station pavement. It is not really a place to eat, unlike many Jumo King outlets where you can stand and enjoy your Indian Burgers with the red and green chatni they provide. Some of the outlets even have chairs to sit and enjoy the wada pavs, but here there isn't such arrangement. It is more of a shop, where you ask the vendor to give you your choice of wada pav, pay, collect your order, and leave. So, there isn't really an ambience that I can talk about.

The location is in a very crowded zone and thus has many patrons, ranging from all agre groups. This is because of the station as well as because Andheri East has too many people. It gets really uncomfortable standing here, as during rush hours, people in hurry will almost push you and walk away without even apologizing. It is worst in monsoon, when water is clogged below the feet and the roof is pouring above the head.

Also, this outlet doesn't provide all the variants of Jumbo wada pavs, but just the basic ones. They are cheap and affordable, even by general public. There are just one or two vendors at the shop who quickly serve you your order. Good  option to grab a wada pav when hungry and munch on it while traveling in the train.

Jumbo vada pav :)

Vada pav is the best fast food and I am a crazy fan. Being a Mumbaikar we always prefer vada pav for a quick bite. In every corner or galli you will find a famous local vada pav joint.

Jumbo king was newly opened near my classes. I always used to be hungry while reaching for lectures in the evening, with less pocket money I had very limited choices.

Me and my friends once thought of giving it a visit. When we entered the place it was not clean, mosquitoes sitting around may be because of rainy season.

Then while ordering the vada pav, I noticed that he took out the pattice from the refrigerator and then heated it. Though the order received was nice and tasty, but still it will always be a point that they served stale vadas.

Chutney Daalo!
Oct 23, 2008 02:18 PM 6663 Views

Though the Jumbo King Vada Pav is really tasty and well-packed, they need to at least ask us if we want the Chutney/ketchup spread inside like the regular vendors. It is so inconvenient to open the chutney zip locks! Overall, it is a very good concept-only that you need to look out for an outlet. I am not sure how much one can wait to spot a JK outlet if one is hungry.

Another good thing about JK is that it uses the roadside rather than inside-the-mall space that McDonalds or Subway etc. use. This makes it really easy to pick the VP on the go, without the prospect of entering a crowded mall.

I'm not sure if they do, but they should also stock water and soft drinks and anything that complements their core offering-the Vada Pav. For me, a VP is not a convenient option to satisfy my hunger if something to drink is not available at the same or next stall. JK, with their setup, can definitely note and work on these points.

The King of Snacks

Ask any Mumbaikar what his/her favourite fast food is and nine times out of ten the answer will be Vada Pav, and that is an open secret.

What is Vada Pav and why is it so famous :

Vada Pav is the desi version of the burger. Spicy potato sabzi is coated with besan and then deep fried. That is the vada. The vada is then put in a pav along with chutney (mostly garlic chutney) and served piping hot.Eureka!! Your favourite snack is ready. It is a very popular road side snack in Mumbai, as it is very filling and light on your pocket too. You will find a vada pav gaadi on almost every street in Mumbai. Most of these vada pav gaadis, found at strategic locations like outside offices, school, railway stations etc. score negative points in hygiene and cleanliness. However, there is one vada pav place that scores over all the vada pav gaadis, and that is Jumbo King.

Jumbo King Vada Pav(referred as JK hereafter)

JK is a fast food chain that ?pledges to make the humble vada pav world class? *.Started about three years ago, this fast food chain specializes in vada pav. No rocket scientist brain required to figure out the menu, but they also have variants of the vada pav, like the ?diet jumbo king? and ?cheese jumbo king?. The outlet that I visited is situated right at the entrance of Andheri station on the east side. I must admit, I was a bit surprised to see the people there in aprons and serving the vada pav wearing plastic gloves. They also have this steel frying equipment, somewhat similar to the one you see at McDonalds. This is something that you don?t get to see at the gaadi. They (JK) plan to make the vada pav as popular as the burger. And they have introduced the franchisee concept, (which is something unheard of in the road side snacks business), something similar to McDonalds. A grand expansion plan of having at least 1000 outlets is the next target.

Positive Points

Reasonable Price :The Jumbo King Vada Pav comes at a reasonable price. At Rs. 5/- for one, it is slightly costlier than its counterpart available on the street. But, you don?t mind paying the extra rupee as long as you get a better quality vada pav.

Cleanliness :The place (JK Andheri East) was clean. At least I found it clean on the outside. The people who serve are in aprons, caps and wear gloves.

Location : **Most of the outlets are located outside railway stations. Weary office goers, after a tiring day at work flock to these outlets just before entering the battlezone (a.k.a railway platform).

Brand Name : **Works every time. I have seen (and know a few) people who had never eaten a vada pav in their life and always used to lecture us on the unhygienic food, eat the the JK outlet.

Negative Points

Pav size :Slightly bigger than the usual pav. No wonder they call it Jumbo! But for those who have grown up on the road side vada pav (10% pav + 90% vada), this seems a bit of a let down.

Going by the popularity of JK, it seems that the common man?s food has come a long way and is surely going places.

P.S : The vada pav is my favourite snack too, and though this review is about Jumbo King, I felt I should include the name of my favourite non JK gaadi. If you live or work or even are familiar with the Vile Parle east area, then the place to get the yummiest vada pav is the Parle Tilak canteen.

-: Thank you :-

Jumbo Idea!
Aug 18, 2005 02:38 PM 8638 Views

Capitalism is not necassarily bad. And globalization doesn't necassarily kill culture. The world looks at capitalsim and marxism like they are black and white. A path between them, I vehementely believe is possible. And Jumbo King is therefore very important to our economy. Jumbo King is vadapav outlet based on the McDonalds' model.( For the seemingly ignorant, vadapav is the road-side food Mahrashtrians and particularly Mumbaikars live by. Its basically balls of aloo sabji dipped in besan batter and then deep fried, served between the fold of pav or double bread) Vadapav is sold on almost every street and is accompanied by any chutney. It would cost anywhere between 3 to 4 bux, depending on the vadapav-walla. It is extremely ceap, filling and very stumptuous. Selling vadapav like burgers is a genuinely inteersting and lucrative idea. The vadapavs at JK are sold for 5 bux, so yeah, we can pay an extra buck for hygiene. Moreover all the franchises are found outside railway stations, which ensures them good business. Also, Jumbo King gives you the option of Brown bread and vada pav with cheese. So u c, globalization isn't that bad afterall!!

But here is Jk's biggest drawback...its pav is too good for any vadapav. Don't get it? The pav is big, nice and fluffy, but it seems to conceal the taste of the vada, because of its excessiveness. In the end, inspite of its high standards for potatoes and bread, it doesnt satisfy the tastebuds like the original. So try Jumbo King, please do, but Im not sure it will be your haunt.
