Jog Falls, Shimoga Reviews

Jog falls, must visit if you’re in shimoga
Apr 28, 2015 05:55 PM 35858 Views

This place is also nearby my hometown, best time to visit this place is during rainy season when there is enough water in the river, which eventually becomes waterfall, this is the second largest waterfall in Asia, during rainy season the place is really crowded, it takes around two ours from shimoga to reach there, many cabs & busses ferry between these two cities, there are various viewpoints in jog falls to view the serene beauty, you can even go down to the falls & feel the waterfall which really falls from a great high, it’s a must visit place during rainy season, you can carry your homemade food & enjoy it there.

I, am writing this review as, I visited this place in October 2011 and  couldn't find any review that is beneficial for tourist. The following  points should be noted.

  1. This hotel is located overlooking the jog falls.

  2. You will get a room in average condition 2-3 beds for Rs 500.(Not very clean but OK for 1 night).

3 You can very well book the hotel in advance using the below link for online booking.

https://karnatakaholidays.net/

  1. Best time to visit the place would be during the Monsoon till October End.

  2. There are quite a number of nearby places to see E.g. a DAM, Wild life Sanctuary, Temples etc.

6.  There is a attached restaurant with the Hotel serving only south Indian  foods, there is shopping complex in the Premises that has a number of  small kiosks selling idili, Maggi, Parathas, Egg's Etc.

I have attached a few pix of the hotel as, I was unable to find one anywhere on the website.

Hope this review helps u for planning a trip and stay at jog falls.

Jog falls

Jog falls, is in shimoga district & created by sharavvati river which falls from a height of 250 meters means 1/4th of a KM, imagine the height, the whole fall is divided into 3 groups, the best season to visit this place is during rainy season when dam releases water you will get a good view of fall, you can see the fall from front that is one angle & most exciting thing is you can also go on top of that fall watch the water falling from that height.

There are many accidents that had occurred on the top of the falls, as it will be slippery & if you see downwards from top you will be shocked to see that.so be careful when you on top pof the falls. When I was a child I mean 18 years ago there was a special train like thing which would take you to the bottom of the falls, I don't remember all things about it exactly. You can also go downwards & experience the waterfall frm that much height.

There are many different places & view points where you can watch the falls differently. If the day is cloudy you will not be able to see the falls for very long time.you can only see the falls if its a clear day.

To reach jog, there are KSRTC buses from almost all cities towards shimoga & from Shimoga you will get KSRTC/private buses/private vehicles.

My Travel Dairies - Jog Falls, Kaledi Rameshwar
Nov 17, 2009 02:40 PM 14549 Views

I was planning since some time to visit Jog Falls. I heard this name when I was in my School, in a Geography Class. As any other traveller, I too did lot of reasearch about Jog Falls and every time, I read, I found something or the other interesting about this place.

I visited Jog Falls in September 2009, and here are my experiences. It was a bright day, after the monsoon, I and my wife thought of visiting some good place over the weekend and we zeroed down on Jog Falls. I enquired with the Karnataka Tourism department, if they had any tickets available for the trip. Fortunately, we got the tickets. I think, each ticket cost Rs. 1250/- per head. So for two of us it costed Rs.2500/-.

The tour schedule was like this: Start from Bangalore at 9PM on day one, reach a place called Sagar by 6AM on day 2,  which is just some 25KMs away from Jog Falls. Get refreshed by 9AM, visit Kaledi Rameshwar Temple, which is located in Sagar. Then move to Jog Falls around 11:30 AM, on the way to Jog Falls, visit  Lingamakki dam (from distance) which was build on River Sharavathi. Visit Jog Falls till 6PM and drive back to Bangalore. You will reach Bangalore around 4:30 AM on third day. This is a brief summary of the tour.

We reached Badami House to board the Bus to Jog Falls, it was a non A/C luxury bus, with a capacity of around 45 people. The bus was decent and the driver and the guide were friendly and supportive. It was a smooth ride till Sagar. Sagar was very cool, and it remembered me my childhood. There are no huge constructions and Sagar is like typical Malgudi (RK Narayan's imaginary village). I didnt even find a single house which has more than one floor. It is a must see place, cool, green and very beautiful.

After refreshement, we headed to Kaledi Rameshwar Temple, which was build ages ago (around 800 years). It was a good temple, art work and the construction resembled typical Hoysala-Dravida style. I felt good in that temple, it looked different and has strong history. The roof and the pillar inside the temple looked similar to Halebidu temple. The temple has lot of open space. And no rush, you can  find peace at this temple. A must see place.

Later, we reached Jog Falls at 11:30 AM. To reach the bottom of the falls, you need to climb down 1500 steps. Tough task for me, since I am a little heavy, but I was up for the challenge. My wife and I, started climbing down. It was a wonderful experience, the mist from the fall use to touch us every minute, and it was like welcoming us to the place. It was drizzling on and off, like some body is spraying water on your face and wiping out the sweat on your forehead.

I felt very romantic, and remembered all good old hindi melodies as I climbed down. It took 1 hour 30 mins for to reach the bottom. We relaxed for some time and then walked into the water falls. We played in the water, clicked some photographs and started climbing up the hill. Though climbing up was tuff, we could mange it by watching the beautiful waterfall all the way back. It took 2 hrs to climd up. We reached the top of the hill by 4PM, had lunch (dont expect good food here, food really sucks).

The bus started at 6PM from Jog Falls, had dinner at Shimoga and reached Bangalore at 4:30 AM, next day.Jog Falls, is few beautiful things in India which we should feel great about. Its was a great experiene to see such a huge fall and getting very close to it. Jog Falls, dont just watch it, experience it.

Jog Falls : Miracle Of The Nature

Jog Falls : Miracle Of The Nature

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Mark Twain.

On a very short notice, five adventure thirsty friends drove a fairly long journey covering around thousand kilometers in three days. We just wanted water & only water. Early morning we left Bangalore & by evening after seven hours of pleasant journey we reached the Jog Falls.

I have visited Jog Falls several times, this beautiful place never fail to enthrall me. I used to come down here all the time when ever I needed a break from the busy work schedule or just wanted to get away for a while. It's a relaxing one day getaway from the world of work.

The famous Chinese poet Li Bai once said that waterfalls are just like the Milky Way falling from heaven, to give you some inspiration.

The world famous Jog Falls in Shimoga district is among the most favoured tourist destination in India. Shimoga the city is situated on the banks of Tunga River in the central region of Karnataka. Shimoga is at a distance of 275 Kms from the Bangalore.

Shimoga is a beautiful place where nature has been at its best. The brimming with natural treasures like waterfalls, dense forests, green fields and high mountains, Shimoga is nothing short of a heaven amidst woods. Shimoga also has some splendid wildlife sanctuaries and trek routes making it a magnificent destination for tourism.

Jog Falls is the main reason why Shimoga is one of the most visited cities in Karnataka.Jog Falls is around hundred & five kilometers from Shimoga. This is the highest waterfall in India. Though the distance from Bangalore is little long, but traveling to the falls is always a pleasant.

The Jog Falls are formed by cascading Sharavati River which plunges from a height of nearly 900 feet. The splendorous falls comes down in four different tracks named as Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani.

At the Jog Falls, the flow of tourists has begun as its four different tracks have started over flowing in view of the heavy rain in the catchment area for the past few weeks. The Sharavathy river flowing over a rocky bed, performs a stupendous leap from the height of 900 feet.

One can walk over to the brink of the river and watch the majestic falls from right on the top, This is the only falls where one can see the steep fall of the river, such a majestic view very rarely seen elsewhere.

One can also have a magnificent view from some selected points. The varying effects of light and shade at different time create extremely beautiful scenes. These crystal clear falls are a sheer joy to watch. They keep the viewer captivated with a sort of magnetic attraction displayed by the huge amounts of water that cascades down the falls every minute.

Jog Falls is a ideal place for the Trekkers, river rafters, nature lovers and all those adventurous souls.

The tourism department has built platforms and steps to accommodate a large number of tourists who come to view the falls. The main area also has some accommodation facilities and restaurants.

But it is very unfortunate that the magnificent jog falls is very badly maintained by the Karnataka tourism department. The concerned tourism department should immediately provide the basic facilities to draw more tourists from all over the world.

A trip to these beautiful places gave us the much needed break from our stressed routine. And when it was time to get back to our normal lives, we were refreshed and rejuvenated. It is a beautiful experience enjoying the magnificent falls.

Friends what are you waiting for. Come on Plan a trip to India’s highest water falls. Enjoy the beauty of Nature.

KSTDC Package Tour of Jog Falls
Sep 23, 2009 04:51 PM 23675 Views

I recently visited Jog Falls through KSTDC Package, they charge Rs 1250 per head which includes To and Fro and then 2 hours for refreshment and sight seeing.

Let me start my trip : I started with my wife on Sept 18th 2009 at 10 pm from Badami House, Corporation, the bus was in sharp time and we found bus to be very decent and luxury for that price thought Non AC.And the best thing was the Supervisor cum Guide, he kept on entertaining us with his little known english, he has told us the next day's plan on what are we covering from the morning till evening.

By the time we reached Sagarit was 7 AM, it is the place just 30 mins away from Jog Falls and wherein the KSTDC has its hotel, the guide has asked us to get ready by 9 AM. Though the Hotel was not good interms of stay, but I felt to spent 2 hrs with that package it is worth and the best part is we got the Hot Water as well.

Everyone gathered at 9 AM near the bus and we started our day with Keladi Temple, and then went to Krishnagiri Dam view Point, only u can view the dam from far away distance, as it is a Govt. Restricted area. Then we went directly to the place called Raja Rani Bungalow i.e nothing but Jog Falls but from the Top View wherein the "Mungare Male" Kannada movie shooted, but by the time we reached to that place it was hot and sunny at 11 AM, there we took some snaps and managed to spend some 45 mins.

Then comes the most exciting JOG FALLS,we reached the spot at 12:15 PM so guide told us the bus will start back again to Bangalore at 5 pm, so we got around 5 hours to spent in Jog Falls.

We had Lunch in KSTDC hotel, though it was not good but we didn't had any option as it is the only hotel available and there is a complex wherein u get Maggi, Dosa and Bread omlet.

Guide told us, its really worth going down from the hill to have a full view of Jog Falls. We had lunch and then we decided to go down from the hill, it took us 45 mins to reach down as it was 1400 steps and we reached finally.

Man it was awesome view it was real Jannat, but then we felt after reaching Jog Falls, if we don't go under the waterfall shower, its of no use, but the main danger starts we had to do the rock climbing, but people who love Rock Climbing will sure like that, it took us some 20 mins climbing and finally reached the spot of water falls, haaaaaaaaaaaaaa I love when the water is falling on me from above 800 meters height, took some unbelievable pics with such a great waterfalls.

and then I didn't realise how the time has passed it was already 3:30 pm and we have to climb back some 1400 steps after this rock climbing. Somehow we managed to reach on top at 4:45 pm, so went to the complex had some snacks and assembled at the BUS. We started at 5:30 pm from Jog Falls and halted for Dinner at Shimoga which is 100 kms away from Jog Falls. We had dinner and started back to Bangalore and by the time we reached Bangalore it was just 5 AM in Majestic, I was wondering whether we get an Auto or Bus at that time. But iam very fortunate in Majestic the Bus conductor was shouting for Marathalli !!!!! then we boarded the bus and reached my place.

Overall we felt KSTDC Package was worth, if we would have gone by our own sources, we would have landed up spending more than this and then lot of pain would have involved on arranging all the stuff.

Abbey falls
Nov 04, 2008 09:31 PM 11922 Views

Abbey falls  is a tourist attraction in the thick  coffee plantations of the Western ghats in Karnataka. It is about 10kms drive from Madikkere. It is approachable from Mysore for tourists. The first lap must be Bangalore and then Mysore. The SH  88 is well laid and it takes you to Abbey falls after a two and half hour drive from Mysore. The entire stretch of SH 88 is engulfed with greeneries. Enroute one can drop in at Nisargadhama - a sublime and calm place. The water falls from a height of 22mts. between huge boulders to a deep   rocky valley.

A days trip from Mysore to Nisargadama and Abbey falls is sufficient. Abbey in local dialect means falls. The Britishers named it Jessey falls after the daughter of Madikere's first chaplain. The Abbey falls is protected by barricades and no one is allowed to take bath, because of some 'unwary people'  meeting their end there. One can stand alongside a bridge constructed right in front of the falls and enjoy its beauty, its gushing sound and as you stand in the bridge your whole face and body will be sprinkled, nay, sprayed with the water particles from the gushing falls.

I think even if one tends to venture for a bath one cannot withstand the force of the water. There is no entry fee and it is a privately owned and maintained falls.

It is a must for any person visiting Karnataka.

Once in a life time a man or woman must see jogfal
Oct 04, 2007 11:41 PM 12189 Views

The picture jog falls, u find the falls, the fall of water down on to the stream, that will end into Arabian sea. This is world famous jog falls, it can be called as one of the  seven wonder of world if tajmahal is included as one in seven wonder on earth, me consider jog falls equal if not less than tajmahal.

Dont u see, for centuries, or for hundreds of centuries, not that much still higher for millions of years before the modern man kind emerged on this earth, before mankind could walk this JOG FALLS existed in its royal form, queen form, mistress form, love form, bewtiching, enchanting, delightful to the eyes, the scene the fall reach to our eyes, stays as much as the one u love in ur life.

Just view the falls, not for minutes, but for hours, the two of u, one in love, other being loved.becomes both in eachother filled with love.

I AM bit explicating.enticing, rupturing, excessively bringing euphoria of feeling of I must fly, travel or drive to this place which will culminate, fullfill the deep love felt , being felt or continue to feel, this is very important factor for lovers.

Not only to lovers, but for those who are just married, just  married should gaze this fall for very long hours, the wife should not nag but nudge, the husband instead of hearing better stand at her side, make more sense.

where I am leading, i am just making all the inquisitive romantic and ms members who miss the feel of beautiful feelings, that will come back, yes those who miss love will get back their love, just viewing the falls.

IT takes a lot of time to illustrate how the fall will become a permanent honeymoon visit for u in life.

1  Children will feel just amazed, awed, wonderstruck and feel this is really nice.

2  TEEN BOYS AND TEEN GIRLS, for them this falls is just a romantic background filled place, a teen girl dream, oh if I am with my lover, or boyfreind, how nice to hold, cajole  and cheek to cheek view the falls.

3  serious lovers, pesons who are in troubled water that is serious love that is called family against for their  loving eachother, they contemplate so many factors.

the lovers firrst choice or feeling is we two will live like this fall, up or down me and u just will hold eachother let them try us in any court of love, but our love will stay in this falls.

4  just married, the just married couple, here the trouble is wife is always let us go, let us go, she fears the husband may recall his previous visit to jog falls with his ex girl freind, many times just marrried from wife side, she is more worried , since men suddenly feel homesick, if his previous girl freind holding a new person and he just cant console her halunciation.

5 married for more than ten years, these couples are very clever, they are more interested in eating  bits, chocolates, complaining on traffic and trying to chat with any whom they know, since many are known to eachother.

6  A BOY AND A GIRL, if any single boy and single girl by chance view the falls, they really fall in love with each ot her, jog falls is purely a very romance making place.u will fall in love with this place instantly, fortunately this jog falls is very near to my place it is not more than 3 hours car drive from where I am sitting.

7 once again u can enjoy viewing the falls from many direction, this is very easy than me to explain.

8 This falls is as BEAUTIFUL to one as ANNA KARENINA , it is unforgettable love feel in ur life, i caution any single man seeing the jog falls will become love sick,

10 in my place it is called as a place once in lifetime jog falls must not be missed.

11 THE best time to visit is from july to end of october.

12 this year 2007 the place is too good becase of copious rain.

13 HOW TO REACH, FROM BANGALORE THIS IS 10 HOURS JOURNEY, BUS FARE ORDINARY 200 RUPEES  DELUXE WILL COST ABOUT 450 RS.

14 ONE CAN also halt at SHIMOGA which is 65 miles from jog falls, 3 hours drive from shimoga.

15 since my place is shimoga few of ms members can really make use of my hospitality, so they will never forget my  review feel thru this.

16 love love love that is all u feel where ever u walk, roam, if enough money, food, and time to enjoy this is a place to enrich ur romance in married life, or in love life, seriious lovers will sure wont break their love at all,

17 I am just impressing on love factor, as far as me feel, the cherishment in jogfalls is falling ln love.

Jog falls is a must watch for all people who love and appreciate nature. The falls is a refreshing treat to  your eyes and is at its best during monsoon season ( Aug - Oct). When I visited the falls it was rainy and hence it caused a little inconvenience and hence we decided not to climb down .We will reach the top of the falls and hence there is an option to go down where the water falls. We can take bath as well. But it is advisable to go down only if you are going as a group.

It will be really crowded and one may feel that the place is not well maitained , but still ignoring all such thngs you can enjoy the falls and will love it.The mist which surrounds the falls and then slowly moves away to have a full view of the falls. You will enjoy the Hide and Seek the Falls plays hiding behind the mist and thn slowly coming out to show its seamless beauty.

We waited for around 45 minutes for the mist to clear and to take a snap.

How to  Go from Bangalore:

The nearest town is Shimoga hence we can either take a  train directly to Shimoga and then a bus from there.I went by the tour arranged by KSRTC , it cost aroung 900 rs per head. The bus starts from Bangalore at 10 PM on friday and it reaches Morning 7 to town (Sagara)Where the KSRTC would provide accomodation to take bath and have breakfast .

Then after visiting few other places near the town we head to Jog falls. The falls has four views which the guide will explain and then the rest of the day is spent at the Jog falls , lunch can be taken in the restaurant there(dont expect something gr8) a very normal meal will only be available. The bus leaves back to bangalore at 5:30 and will stop at Shimoga for Dinner and it will reach next morning at 4:00 to Bangalore.

Its the perfect place to sit and silently admire or trek and have some adventure as well.Be careful dont go in some other season there may be no water and u may be disappointed.

Shivanasamudra Water Falls
Dec 21, 2006 08:19 PM 16773 Views

Shivanasamudra is the second highest waterfall in india.. There were 4 bikes - 8 people

  1. Herohonda Joy (Sterin, Nilby)

  2. TVS Victor (Nirmal, Shameer)

  3. Bajaj Discover (Lijit , Mahendra)

  4. Herohonda Splendor (Vipin , Raman)

Distance and route

It was a long 120 km, 5 hr journey through Madiwala - Banarghatta road - Kanakapura road - Kanakapura - Malavalli - Shivanasamudra via NH 209. (1) Madiwala to Kanakapura – 50 km (2) Kanakapura to Malavalli - 48 km (2) Malavalli to Shivanasamudra – 22 km

Travel

We started at 7.30 after filling 6 liters petrol in each bikes. On the way we stopped at every 20 kms and took snaps. The road till Kanakapura is good. You can keep your vehicle at 45 - 55 km/hr. We had our breakfast from Kanakapura at 9.30am. Then we moved to Malavalli. Road is full of gutters and the riding was like a mud race. We surprised to NH - 209 name board on the way. Till Malavalli road was really horrible. You can just maintain a speed of 20 -30.The only entertainment on that road was the rally with a tourist bus full of COLLEGE GIRLS. After reaching Malavalli, the road till Shivanasamudra is too good to ride. You can keep the speedometer at 70 - 80 very easily.

In Shivasamudra

After reaching Shivanasamudra, first we went to see the details of Hydro electric power station which started on 1902. Water from one of tributes of river Cauvery was stored at a height. This water is passed through huge pipes (like one in Swades) to bottom to rotate turbines and produces electricity. After watching all these we moved to waterfall side.

Water fall 1

There are actually 2 water falls. One is a collection of a lot cascaded falls. There other one was falling in a stretch from a big height (350 feet). Water from.both falls (from different directions) combined and flows together thereafter. The view from above is really a nature's gift. We crossed the fence there and went down to have a closer look and to feel water spays from one of the falls. Reaching down to water was impossible It was steep down almost 200 feet. Trekking upwards was really difficult. We had meals from the main gate hotel. Good South Indian meals for mere Rs. 16/- .We came to know from locals that there another place to see at a distance of 7 km from there. Its from there that the cascaded falls starts its fall. So we moved to see the second one.

Water fall 2

We reached there after 15 minutes traveling. The place where we have to get down was near a mosque. We went down near the falls. Trekking through the rocks was really amazing. We found a nice place to have a bath near one of the cascaded falls. Place was not too deep. So everybody jumped into the water to get fresh after a long journey. We spent almost 2 hrs in water. After that we had a lot of snaps of different views of the waterfall. It was too good to watch and enjoy. We started our way back from there at 5 pm. We took a few photos in nice places with sunset as back ground. We reached Kanakapura back at 7 30 and had tea. We reached Madiwala, our home at 9.45 pm.

Conclusion

Altogether it is the longest and thrilling bike trip I ever had. Those who like riding will find it really wonderful except that 45 km Kanakapura - Malavalli bad road. It’s a nice one day trip for the youth in Bangalore who like bike ride, water and trekking.

Jog Falls
Aug 31, 2006 05:35 PM 25948 Views

The Jog falls also known as "jogada gundi" is one of the highest waterfalls in Asia.Jog falls is nestled in the Western ghats. The drive up the hill is glorious giving a birds eye view of the festile and magical western ghats. It is located in Shimoga District, Karnataka state, southern India. It is set in the wild and unspoilt surroundings.

Nature here has not been disturbed for the tourist tappings i.e unneussary constructions and falling of trees. The Sharavati river crashes nearly nine hundred feet down forming four main channels named king, queen ,rocket and roarer.

The four streams are named in accordance with their perceived trajectories:

Raja (King): Named so because of its apparently 'dignified' and 'serene' fall.It falls 250 m below forming a 40 m deep pool.

Rani (Queen), also called Lady: The stream has a winding, twisting trajectory, said to resemble the movements of a female dancer

Roarer: This stream appears out of a mass of rocks, making a tremendous amount of noise (hence the name).

Rocket: Consists of a large volume of water streaming out of a small opening at a very high speed.

Associated with the waterfall is the nearby Linganamakki dam across the Sharavati river, and the hydro-electric power station that it serves. The dam has led to a reduction of the amount of water reaching the falls during the summer months.

During the rainy season (June-October), the floodgates of the dam need to be opened and the waterfall runs full. This is also the main tourist season at the waterfall.Just after the monsoon season or rainy season the falls are a magnificient and awesome sight to see. At this time the falls are surrounded by mists.

The walk to the bottom of the falls for the hale and hearty is recommonded and one can take a dip in the pool created below by the falls, during the dry season. This venture would be impossible during the monsoons as the flow in the falls increase and the mist shrouds these falls. There is dampness everywhere and the vegetation becomes bright green with water drops dripping from the trees.

How to reach:

Jog is situated around 32 Km from a small town Sagara, and is 379 Km away from Bangalore.

Recommended way to reach:

Bangalore to Shimoga by train, Shimoga to Sagara by Non-stop bus and to Jog by bus from Sagar. For those who would like to travel by bus there are direct KSRTC busses from Banagalore to Jog (8.30 Hrs Travel).

Nearest Railway staion: Shimoga City

Nearest Towns: Sagara, Siddapura, Sirsi.

Climate: Jog falls are situated up the cool climes of the Western-Ghats.

Clothings: Light cool dresses for summer. During the monsoon season the nights are cool. Warm clothings will be required for the winter months i.e. December to February.

Language: Kannada is the principal language of this region. Few people also understand English and Hindi.

Best Time to visit: August-November is the best time to visit.

Places to Stay: There are facilities to stay in Jog.

(a) The government owned (Karnataka Tourism) "Sharavati Tourist Home" is comfortable clean and reasonble priced. It offers good view of the falls.

(b) Tunga Tourist Home : This is also a cheap and comfortable place to say.

(c) Inspection Bunglow at Jog falls : This is often heavily booked and its booking can be done at the District Commissioners at Shimaga.
