Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander
I’m writing this one because of
a) my vellapanti
b) my extreme love for this movie
c) some contest in MS (to be a bit greedy in your vella time is not a sin)
d) I want to give a moralethrough my review…so go on.
This is not a movie, THIS IS A MESSAGEto the humankind. The picture portrays many aspects of an Indian middle class family…hard-work, show-off inorder to impress girls, undesirable love, college-masti, bunking of classes, father scolding, snobbish behaviour of rich boys, tiffs b/t brothers, realization of mistakes and a nerve-testing climax…may be that’s why every scene/second of this movie is worth it.
From this movie a superstar was born…we know him as Aamir Khan. When good things come on earth so are bad things… maintaining this law of nature…a shameless illogical animal named Deepak Tijori (villain of the movie and now producer of two block-bust-flops like Oops and Tom Dick Harry) also gained limelight through this movie. The film was directed by Mansoor Khan. Feminism in the movie is shown through Ayesha Julka (the heroine) and Pooja Bedi (the vamp). Apart from these names there were many other characters, who elegantly played their acts but as always remain unnoticed.
The basis of the story revolves around the rivalry of two colleges…Raj and Model…Raj being a cheap non-luxurious college while Model is a posh one. Both colleges want to have the prestigious CYCLE race award…however Shekhar Malhotra (a flamboyant rich lad played by Deepak Tijori) wins it in the beginning of the movie by beating Ratan Lal (Raj college champ). Meanwhile, Ratan’s younger brother Sanju (played by Aamir Khan) is a big-bunker cum prankbuster and also a failure. The middle part of the movie shows the love triangle of Pooja Bedi <- Aamir Khan <- Ayesha Julka (the unidirectional arrows represents the love direction). The problem starts with Sanju’s extreme crush on a model-look type Pooja Bedi, who is the girlfriend of Shekhar. Then, Sanju helps Pooja Bedi in ditching out Shekhar. Succeess in his mission results in more rivalry. Later after knowing the truth about Sanju’s stature, he is again ditched also by Pooja Bedi. (I must say! Great work Pooja!...gunning down two college guys…only a bombshell has that capability). The story goes on…the rivalry becomes more intense.
There is one more race near the end of movie…but this one is more special than the first one. Both Shekhar and Ratan are in their final year of college and both want to win it (for Shekhar it would be the third consecutive time if he does it successfully). But there is a twist, in the fight b/t the two…Shekhar unintentionally pushes Ratan down from the Mt. ridge. (Good news: he survives ; Bad news: multiple fractures in both legs). Meanwhile, Ratan’sfather results with a cool multiple gears embedded bike, but bad news disappoints him.
Then comes the right time, the loser prankmaster boy transforms into a responsible hard-working male. They say “Behind every successful man, there is atleast one human”…in this case, that human was Ayesha Julka. Then comes the climax: the final race. In Bollywood movies, we know before the picture starts who the winner is…THE hero of the movie. BUT! The key lies in ‘how to make the HERO the WINNER’…and that’s where Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander scores…ultimate climax…stretched till the last second.
If you think the above mentioned things are not enough for you to acknowledge the movie…leave them…read below ;
The most compelling reason: JATIN-LALIT’s music.
1) Phela Nasha – the name of the song is itself a poetic code ‘Phela Nasha’ referring to first time in love. It was the romantic anthem of 90’s and still you can still find this song as ringtones on many mobiles.
Chahe tum kuch na kaho
maine sun liya
Ki sathi pyar ka
mujhe chun liya, chun liyaaa
The song was sung by Udit Narayan and the amazing lyrics were written by Majnoh Sultanpuri. The picturization of the song involves: Ayesha Julka day dreaming in her maths class, Aamir Khan ball-dancing with his brother n then singing amidst the Mts…romantic-ity at its best.
2) Jawaan Hoon Yaaron – it sounds a bit like Karm’s superhit song “Meri Umar ke Naojawano”. It’s a pacy track and very energizing.
3) Rooth Kar Hum Se Khabhi – my best of all. A trivia; not many people know who sang it. This is a creation from Lalit’s throat. It is picturized on Sanju, who sings for his elder brother while he resides in hospital…MAN! senti feelings at its BEST. The feel of the song is very very soothing and whenever you feel that something special is no more or even after being ditched out by your girlfriend…you can sing this song endless times.
The best dialogue of the movie was delivered by Sanju’s father…it’s a harsh reality though.
Main to sirf ek hi baat maanta hoon. Jo jeeta wohi sikander
Mug up this line if you wanna succeed in life….
