All time favorite motivational movie!

Director: Mansoor Khan

Writers: Nasir Hussain(dialogue)(as Nasir Husain), Mansoor Khan(screenplay)| 1 more credit »

Stars: Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori

This film is right up there on my list. If you feel demotivated and have nothing to do for 3 hours(yes, it is a long film) start this film immediately. The plot has everything. College romance, rivalry, father-son emotions, revenge and the best part is- the cycle race. I am sure that sales of racer cycles shot up after this movie.

The race at the beginning and the race at the end are both brilliant. You don't need to be a scientist to guess what happens in both these races but still it holds you, this movie builds tension. Sanju, played by Amir Khan portrays the brat so well that you feel angry at him. But his journey from a brat to a passionate brother who avenges is the story of t his movie. Pooja Bedi of course her debut and she looks gorgeous. Our very own Marlyn Monroe moment. WHo would forget that! Yes, the songs are still back of our minds. This is an evergreen movie. Must watch if you haven't watched yet!

An all-time favorite motivational movie this!

The movie is set in Dehradun in north India. The movie opens with the description of the various colleges in the city. The Rajput college has students from affluent backgrounds with each student being an heir to a multimillion fortune. In contrast, the Model college has students from poor local households. Other colleges include Xaviers College and Queens College, the latter being an all-girls college with the guys from all three colleges trying to woo the students there.

The highlight of the town is the annual inter-college sports championship with a marathon cycle race as the prime event. In the beginning of the film, the race is contested between Ratan Lal Sharma(Mamik Singh) of Model College and Shekhar Malhotra(Deepak Tijori) of Rajput College with the latter winning the race because Ratan had an inferior bike. After the race both are felicitated by their respective schools. Shekhar becomes cocky and arrogant.

Sanju(Aamir Khan) is Ratan's younger brother and is everything that Ratan is not. He's a carefree youngster who is full of himself and is always in trouble with his father Ramlal(Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who wants him to act more maturely and become responsible like Ratan. Sanju and his little gang, which includes Anjali(Ayesha Jhulka)(who has a crush on Sanju), bunk sports to smoke cigarettes and roam around town. Anjali and her dad run a vehicle repair shop and Anjali's father asks his daughter to stay away from Sanju.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar(translation: He who wins, is the king) is a 1992 Indian sports drama film directed by Mansoor Khan(who earlier directed Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak). The film stars Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Mamik Singh, Deepak Tijori & Kulbhushan Kharbanda in the lead roles, whilst Aamir's brother, Faisal Khan makes a special appearance. The music was by Jatin Lalit.

The plot has certain similarities to the 1979 American movie Breaking Away. It was remade in the 2003 Bengali film Champion, starring Bengali Superstar Jeet and inspired the 1999 Telugu film Thammudu and its remakes Badri(2001) and 2001 Kannada film Yuvaraja. The film won the Filmfare award for best movie that year.

Anjali and her dad run a vehicle repair shop and Anjali's father asks his daughter to stay away from Sanju.

Ramlal and his family run a small cafe which is the hangout spot for most of the college students. A number of scuffles occur between Sanju and Shekhar because of Shekhar's attempts to humiliate Ratan and his dad. Enter Devika(Pooja Bedi), who immediately catches the fancy of both Sanju and Shekhar. Initially she leans towards Shekhar but one day she misses her bus on the way to a picnic to meet Shekhar. Meanwhile Sanju asks Anjali for a car so that he can roam around town. While on his way he spots Devika and leaves his friends at the paan shop and gives Devika a lift. Devika upon reaching her destination finds Shekhar with another girl and goes along with Sanju who, although not rich, brags about his wealth.

Sanju's lie is ultimately revealed when Devika sees him dancing in the Model College group during a dance competition. After the show, Sanju and Devika break up that evening and in heated argument, Sanju fights with Shekhar's friends. Sanju is almost overpowered when his brother intervenes and chases Shekhar's friends away. Ramlal asks Sanju for the money he had given him to deposit in the bank(which he spent on Devika) which leads to a heated argument between Sanju and his dad and Sanju leaves the house

Next morning, Ramlal leaves for town and Ratan is out cycling. Ratan tells Sanju that his Dad has forgiven him and asked him to return home, which Sanju, in anger, ignores. A heated argument and fight ensue between Ratan and Shekhar, which ends with Ratan accidentally falling off a cliff. While Ratan is in hospital, Sanju recollects his childhood with Ratan. When his father returns, he reconciles with him. With Ratan in the hospital, Sanju becomes more responsible and starts to care for his father and bed ridden brother. He decides that he will participate in the race with the help of Anjali and give it his best for Ratan. During his training, he realises his true feelings for Anjali and the two accept each other.

A day before the race, Sanju finds out about the real cause of the accident and confronts Ratan who tells him that he didn't say anything because Sanju had become responsible and closer to all of them. Ratan asks Sanju to give his best in the race if he wants to do something for him.

With his new cycle, Sanju participates in the race. The race begins evenly with both Sanju and Shekhar going head to head. Somewhere in the middle, the two fall and a scuffle ensues between Sanju and Shekhar and his friends. During this, other cyclists take the lead. Shekhar heads back on track with his friends holding Sanju back. Sanju breaks free and joins the race, catching up with Shekhar during the final laps of the race and finally beating him in the closing moments, giving Model College, his father and brother their long awaited victory.

Maybe the film that I've viewed the most from the period of the 90's essentially in light of the fact that I can't quit adoring the stellar execution from Aamir Khan in this jewel of a motion picture from mid 1990's.

The story of 2 siblings and how because of the damage to one, alternate takes part in a school cycle competition and wins the hearts of numerous through his diligent work and devotion, satisfying the since quite a while ago wanted long for his senior sibling and father.

The motion picture finely portrays the life of school and the disagreement of the rich families and poor families and how being poor can NEVER get in your approach to wonderfulness.

A fine story that has been coordinated and acted to flawlessness, a MUST WATCH motion picture.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Skiander was the cult movie of 90S. I am sure the movie still inspires the ones who watch it even after almost 20 years of its original release.

The movie is based upon the struggle of two brothers whose father wanted to show the world that poor people also have the potential of achieving big things in life.

However, the problems begin when his youngest son, Aamir Khan, falls in love with a rich girl by posing himself as the son of one the well-known business tycoons. But his lie exposes soon and the girl jilts him. But before that happens, he had already spent a hefty sum of money on the girl buying an expensive gift, and that money his father had saved to buy a bicycle for his elder son for racing competition.

Things become worse when the elder son meets a fatal accident while fighting with rich guys from another school who were also partaking in the competition.

But then Aamir Khan musters all his strength and prepare hard for the competition on his brother’s behalf who could not participate because of the injuries.

The climax is utterly exciting and gives the viewers a great adrenaline rush. It’s a must watch. Many people don’t know that Aamir also worked as assistant director in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Mellifluous voice of Udit Narayan made the songs of the movie unforgettable, and people still like to listen to them, especially Pehla Nasha.

The finest movie of the 1990's

Perhaps the movie that I've watched the most from the era of the 90's simply because I just can't stop loving the stellar performance from Aamir Khan in this gem of a movie from early 1990's.

The tale of 2 brothers and how due to the injury to one, the other participates in a school cycle tournament and wins the hearts of many through his hard work and dedication, fulfilling the long desired dream of his elder brother and father.

The movie finely depicts the life of college and the contradiction of the rich families and poor families and how being poor can NEVER get in your way to glory.

A fine story that has been directed and acted to perfection, a MUST WATCH movie.

This is the story of Sanjay(Khan): the hot-headed, slacker younger brother of Ratan(Mamik), who was the school sports champion.

At home, Sanjay was always in his brother’s shadow, and always in trouble for his delinquent ways.  The only joy he found in life was among his friends.

The only love he received was from next-door neighbor and mechanic’s daughter, Anjali(Jhulka).  But to him, she was just one of the guys.  Just like the rest of the young men in this four-college town, he chased after the hot rich girls attending Queens.  That is, until school rivalries turned homicidal and he had to put his carefree days behind him in order to avenge his brother and step up to responsibility.

>>> Lovers may enter this way…
Aug 25, 2009 07:48 PM4671 Views

Have you been in LOVE? I can see you glance through your beautiful doll eyes out of surprise… Have I been in love would have been an appropriate question. Either way it's us. I write for myself. You read it for yourself. But, there is a connection between us. The same reason is what makes me write… read… rate…

When every step that you take can be your biggest mistake, would you rather sit back and relax? When you know that the feelings are mutual and you really can't stop falling for the person, won't you take that step?

Today, I was watching this film that enthralled me to tell a tale. This was not the first time I happened to watch it but, I was pulled back to the era where I first saw this, on a hill station, when I hardly knew about love. I always knew there was something about these four letters… the four letters that kept many alive, killed numerous… Oh, that sounds like a poignant tale. This is not the tale that I wanted to share with you all…

=

*Tale

=

This story took place in a beautiful hill station where their most important sporting event was the annual cycling race. Everyone has a dream. A person who doesn’t dream is as equal to a mortal waiting for his demise. So, Ratan(Mamik) had a dream… Ratan had his support from his father, to win the race that took place every year. The discrimination between the rich and poor was emphasized on Ratan and his friends who did their education in Model School, which was considered to be those who can't dream of luxury and all that…

Ratan’s brother, the romantic prankster(?) Sanju(Aamir Khan) lived in a dream world, like many of us. Like his brother, he too had dreams. His dreams were something which many of us(Guys) had at one point of time. Well, to be with the most happening girls(in our(Guys) language)…

The most beautiful character in the film has to be Anjali(Ayesha Jhulka), at least for me, for her simplicity and honesty. She silently loved Sanju who never bothered to even get hold of the vibes. All were cool and calm until Devika arrives… So, Sanju pretends to be a rich boy when Devika(Pooja Bedi) lands on the beautiful Dehradun where the sky was as blue as we see in the drawings… Where the birds chanted as a gesture to show the visitors that the place was special or rather, their guest was too important to be greeted.

The imagination and dreams flaws when Devika comes to know that Sanju was from Model School…

The tale ends in high spirits when Sanju realizes what true love is and what the importance to be honest…to follow dreams… to be responsibile… to make his father proud since he always wanted to see his son(Ratan) to be the winner of the cycling competition that was won by him(Sanju) ultimately due to his brother's accident(he was beaten up by his rivals).

*Pehla Nasha

*Do you believe in love at first sight? Alright, let me come to the song. Haven’t you heard this track a number of times? Are you still stuck to this track that never bore you? Is there any other well choreographed song that you can relate to this when the title'love' stays a step ahead?

Few questions… A sweet memory… that's what it brings to all of us…

My testimonial:

=========

  • It taught me to give importance to the inner beauty rather falling glancing through the worldly pleasures.

  • I had similar occurrences where I had given importance to Devika, when a couple of Anjali's were interested in me.

  • I followed the right path instead to drool over the girls and become a prey like how Sanju had been to.

  • I realized that, when you love someone, give your heart… soul…

  • We live for once… memoirs will be the only treasure you will carry alongside when you turn back and see how it was all since the day you started to dream.

Reviewer's Note:

=========

I have watched this film more than any number you could ever imagine. My mind was blank as when I started to review this film. I haven’t described in detail about the songs or the co-actors in it, but, have tried my best to recollect how it was brought a fresh insight to the rest of the directors at that point of time.

Before I conclude this review, let me ask you a question which might lead you to the gate which is about to wide open for you… Have you… I repeat…

Have you been in love? If so, wouldn’t you love to go back to the same old school gate that always remained open for us… won't you…?

JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR !!!

This is Dehradun, the small hilly area of India. That is Rajput College, and look at their students. They are expert in everything. They are always the winner in sports. Meet this young man, the one and only Shekhar. He is expert in flirting with girls, but also he is the champion cyclist of that area. He always tactfully utilizes his champion status for impressing the girls.

On the other hand, look at the model school, nothing is good at all. They are neither good in studies nor in sports. But, the students from the poor background family always enjoyed their school life, after all school life is school life, no other life can defeat it. That is why they used to sing the song, “Nahi samjhe hai woh humein, toh kya jaata hai……haari baazi ko jeetna humein aataa hai”. But for that, they need to enter the racing field.

Ramlal has two sons, Ratan and Sanju. The two brothers are of two types. Kalpana was there for Ratan, but who was there for Sanju? See the attitude of these Rajput college boys. Shekhar was treating very badly with Ratan, as if Shekhar is his slave. Sanju is after all a very naughty boy.

As the students of Rajput school, it is not expected that you will fight with these model school boys. Shekhar and his gang have been suspended for 1 week. Really, there is not a single beautiful girl in this locality, who is too attractive. My goodness, who is she? Hi, I am Devika. The Devika factor spell bounded Sanju to sing the song, “Pehla Nasha…naya pyar hai, naya intezaar”. Oh! Anjali is not only his friend, she also loves him, but love is not so easy. As expected, Shekhar is also after Devika.

Anjali consoled Sanju by saying that attraction towards each other is not love, it is something else. The dance competition was not bad at all. Model school performed well, but where politics rule, how you can expect the winner’s award there. Don’t tell him that Shekhar and his gang have taken the revenge. Hmm… now I understand, what has actually happened? I just need a racing bicycle to beat that guy.

As a father, I am now watching a different Sanju. Don’t worry Ratan, now it is my turn to take the revenge. The race has started, but where are those boys? Is there any special boy, who changed his strategy to play the race as an underdog?

This Sanju has always proved himself as my useless boy. Well, Mr. Ramlal, hold on your breath, the final lap says it all to utter the sentence,“JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR”, and why not? After all Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Mamik, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi and others are good actors, dancing and singing with the rocking sweet voice of famous singer, Udit Narayan.

Amir's role in the moviel

Review: JO JITA WOHI SKIANDAR Director: Mansoor Khan Writer: Nasir Husain Cast: Amir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mamik, Deb Mukherjee, etc. Rating: 4.5 on 5.00 Review writer: Harish Gaur(Reviews): Jo Jita Wohi Sikandar is the finest movie based on Students School life.

Though it seems far from the real School life but Director has prove his metal how to make it beautiful and effective and create a special craze amongst students. The theme of the story is quite simple and cool, but the pasteurization of songs and acting of Amir Khan, specially is an excellence…… Amir has shown his real talent in the film, the film is based on bondage between family - father and brother.

Amir(Sanju) and his brother Mamik(Ratan) runs a small local café. Ratan on his part is the ideal son and elder brother to Sanju, good in everything he does and has been the runner-up to Shekhar in the cycling race. Sanju on the other hand is a prankster, not taking life seriously at all enjoying life with his friends among whom is Anjali(Ayesha Jhulka) who loves him silently. Sanju however turns his attention on a modern School girl Pooja Bedi(Devika). In the second part of movie when Deepak Tijori(Shekhar Malhotra) the arrogant and previous years Bicycle race winner hurt Mamik(Ratan) with his friends to stop him compete in the race.

Then Amir take his moral responsibility to compete Deepak Tijori in the race and in the very final round of the race he wing Bicycle and made his father, brother and School proud on him. Direction of the film is really proved worthy. Film is a real entertainment the Director has given special attention to focus on every department, whether it is humor, comedy, love scene or emotional sentiments. Director has given special visual effects to the various important scene. Pictureization in the film viz. fight scenes, songs.

The choreographic song – ‘Pehla Nasa, Pela Khuma’ looks quite good and given way to choreographers to perform their metal in the movie songs. The last part of the movie where Amir converts his careless attitude to a responsible person is real charm to see. The last song of the movie ‘Ruth ke ham se kahin jab chale jaoge tum, ye na socha tha kabhi kitne yaad aaoge tum’ is quite good and worthy and give special impact of the movie is worthful watching. Overall Amir’s performance in movie is excellent. The Bicycle sporting event was picturized in the beautiful town of Nainital, Uttranchal.

Because memories never grow old

When I first saw Jo jeeta wohi sikandar, I was merely thirteen, my elder sister, with three years of experience over me, was just stepping into junior college. After watching the movie, I used to scramble out of bed, just to see her dress for college and my mind use to conjure exciting situations for her. I envied her every single step of the way. I couldn't wait to grow up and get absorbed in college life and high school romance.

The movie was all a movie could be. Is all a movie can be. Its inspriring, its motivating, the plot line is interspersed with humour and alternated with reality. Every collge going youth is bound to identify with this movie. It is a film which transcends the confines of generations and holds true every time!

Everybody wants to be a winner, if only to impress their latest crush. Everybody wants to be appreciated and accepted. And everybody naturally depsises mr/ms popular. But being popular does not equate to being a winner. Love cannot grow at the mercy of superficial nuances and victory is the sweetest when you have laboured for it! All messages conveyed in one single movie!

Today, when the college days are reduced to memories, I still pull out a CD of JJWS and relive my moments through the laughter on screen! I did say it was a movie that could be watched ANY time, didnt I?

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander - MUG it!

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander

I’m writing this one because of

a) my vellapanti

b) my extreme love for this movie

c) some contest in MS (to be a bit greedy in your vella time is not a sin)

d) I want to give a moralethrough my review…so go on.

This is not a movie, THIS IS A MESSAGEto the humankind. The picture portrays many aspects of an Indian middle class family…hard-work, show-off inorder to impress girls, undesirable love, college-masti, bunking of classes, father scolding, snobbish behaviour of rich boys, tiffs b/t brothers, realization of mistakes and a nerve-testing climax…may be that’s why every scene/second of this movie is worth it.

From this movie a superstar was born…we know him as Aamir Khan. When good things come on earth so are bad things… maintaining this law of nature…a shameless illogical animal named Deepak Tijori (villain of the movie and now producer of two block-bust-flops like Oops and Tom Dick Harry) also gained limelight through this movie. The film was directed by Mansoor Khan. Feminism in the movie is shown through Ayesha Julka (the heroine) and Pooja Bedi (the vamp). Apart from these names there were many other characters, who elegantly played their acts but as always remain unnoticed.

The basis of the story revolves around the rivalry of two colleges…Raj and Model…Raj being a cheap non-luxurious college while Model is a posh one. Both colleges want to have the prestigious CYCLE race award…however Shekhar Malhotra (a flamboyant rich lad played by Deepak Tijori) wins it in the beginning of the movie by beating Ratan Lal (Raj college champ). Meanwhile, Ratan’s younger brother Sanju (played by Aamir Khan) is a big-bunker cum prankbuster and also a failure. The middle part of the movie shows the love triangle of Pooja Bedi <- Aamir Khan <- Ayesha Julka (the unidirectional arrows represents the love direction). The problem starts with Sanju’s extreme crush on a model-look type Pooja Bedi, who is the girlfriend of Shekhar. Then, Sanju helps Pooja Bedi in ditching out Shekhar. Succeess in his mission results in more rivalry. Later after knowing the truth about Sanju’s stature, he is again ditched also by Pooja Bedi. (I must say! Great work Pooja!...gunning down two college guys…only a bombshell has that capability). The story goes on…the rivalry becomes more intense.

There is one more race near the end of movie…but this one is more special than the first one. Both Shekhar and Ratan are in their final year of college and both want to win it (for Shekhar it would be the third consecutive time if he does it successfully). But there is a twist, in the fight b/t the two…Shekhar unintentionally pushes Ratan down from the Mt. ridge. (Good news: he survives ; Bad news: multiple fractures in both legs). Meanwhile, Ratan’sfather results with a cool multiple gears embedded bike, but bad news disappoints him.

Then comes the right time, the loser prankmaster boy transforms into a responsible hard-working male. They say “Behind every successful man, there is atleast one human”…in this case, that human was Ayesha Julka. Then comes the climax: the final race. In Bollywood movies, we know before the picture starts who the winner is…THE hero of the movie. BUT! The key lies in ‘how to make the HERO the WINNER’…and that’s where Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander scores…ultimate climax…stretched till the last second.

If you think the above mentioned things are not enough for you to acknowledge the movie…leave them…read below ;

The most compelling reason: JATIN-LALIT’s music.

1) Phela Nasha – the name of the song is itself a poetic code ‘Phela Nasha’ referring to first time in love. It was the romantic anthem of 90’s and still you can still find this song as ringtones on many mobiles.

Chahe tum kuch na kaho

maine sun liya

Ki sathi pyar ka

mujhe chun liya, chun liyaaa

The song was sung by Udit Narayan and the amazing lyrics were written by Majnoh Sultanpuri. The picturization of the song involves: Ayesha Julka day dreaming in her maths class, Aamir Khan ball-dancing with his brother n then singing amidst the Mts…romantic-ity at its best.

2) Jawaan Hoon Yaaron – it sounds a bit like Karm’s superhit song “Meri Umar ke Naojawano”. It’s a pacy track and very energizing.

3) Rooth Kar Hum Se Khabhi – my best of all. A trivia; not many people know who sang it. This is a creation from Lalit’s throat. It is picturized on Sanju, who sings for his elder brother while he resides in hospital…MAN! senti feelings at its BEST. The feel of the song is very very soothing and whenever you feel that something special is no more or even after being ditched out by your girlfriend…you can sing this song endless times.

The best dialogue of the movie was delivered by Sanju’s father…it’s a harsh reality though.

Main to sirf ek hi baat maanta hoon. Jo jeeta wohi sikander

Mug up this line if you wanna succeed in life….

(so start working hard)
