Indian Coffee House, Church Street, Bangalore Reviews

Indian Coffee House, Church Street, restaurant

Indian Coffee House is located at 19, Ground Floor, Church Street, Bangalore. They specialize around South Indian cuisines. They charge pocket friendly payable budget of 200 INR. for two people. They are functional between 8am – 8:30pm. Indoor seating places are available.

They ensure that coffees are prepared using the freshest ingredients and the people who visit end up having a great time. Their Mutton Cutlets are worth satiating your temptations. Their aesthetically designed dining place is sure to cheer up your senses.

Their reign supremacy at authentic taste and flavours. Their Vada will be a lip-smacking snack to your taste buds. Their fulsome meal that goes well with the signature coffee options. They offer wide range of relish worthy egg-based items like Scrambled Eggs. Their Masala Dosa has good amount of stuffed mashed potatoes. Their sandwiches are average in taste and the rest of the south Indian fare other than the dosa is also not that great.

Indian Coffee House offers you relish worthy beverages. Overall their management is very courteous and polite. Their Filter Coffee is a must have after their meals and drinks. Their Hot Coffee is equally tempting. Their khara bath is also very delectable.

SUPERB COFFEE
Oct 13, 2016 08:49 PM2584 Views

This is a fantastic coffee center, wherein the coffee is available in hot condition, the aroma of the coffee is superb and if at all one drinks the coffee without sugar, the coffee tastes fantastic The price of the coffee seems to be little costlier, but if you check the quality and the quantity of the same is reasonable.

But the main drawback is that the attitude of the people who serves the coffee is adamant and not at all service minded And they take their own time to serve and there will be huge difference in the quality of service if you give more tips.

Over all good place for good place with the immediate requirement of good service from the management.

Simple inexpensive food in the heart of the city.

An old Bangalore landmark, like Koshy's and Airlines Hotel, Indian Coffee House shifted from it's erstwhile M.G.Road Location to the adjoining Church Street around 4 years ago. And while some bemoaned the fact that it would no longer occupy its many decades old landmark, they'll be happy to note that most other things have remained constant. Is that a good or bad thing? Let's find out.

Location and Ambiance

Situated on a road which bristles with many modern and indeed, upscale joints like Starbucks, Krispy Kreme Donuts and Matteo, Indian Coffee House looks like a bit of an outsider. Among the young, hip joints, it is an old school, British Raj Era grandpa, happy to just be there, aloof and not caring a bit for modern fashions. You get a better idea of that as soon as you enter. They have tried to recreate the exact ambiance as was there in the old location, with blue walls, simple bench tables and chairs, and basically not much else. Utilitarian is the best way to describe it.

Thankfully, unlike Kohsy's, at least there is no tattered table cloths to bother about.

The waiters are also from an old school time. Indeed, many of them are in their 50s or older, having served in the Indian Coffee House for almost all their lives. Their uniform also seems to be stuck in time.

Do not expect any frills here. Wifi? Forget about it. You get a place to sit, and that's it. The wash basin seems to be the only concession to modern day necessity, and it is not really that clean. Indeed, located behind a dirty curtain, it is surrounded by bags of god only knows what.

Menu & Taste

Unlike some places which profess to serve 100s of items, Indian Coffee House keeps it simple. There are just around 30+ items on the menu, and some of them are just variations of the other. The obvious thing to get here is the hot coffee, which costs a reasonably Rs. 16. It is served in crockery which seems as ancient as the place. Some cups unfortunately are a bit chipped, and I wonder why they don't replace them. Regarding taste, it is a good, not too strong filter coffee, but not the best that you can find in the city. Still, it's pretty good.

Cold coffee is also available, served in a Yera glass (also ancient). It tastes good, sort of a homemade feel to it. Rs. 33 per glass. What I normally have as food when I come here varies between the bread toast with omlette, or the plain and simple masala dosa. Bread toast or bread butter with an omlette or scrambled eggs are one of the popular combinations to have here. However, they never seem to have the tomato omlette. So Plain it is then. Nothing remarkable, but you can never go wrong with a simple bread and egg. Together, they cost around Rs. 50.

Or you can try the south indian items of idli, vada  and dosa (plain or masala). The idli and vada is nondescript and not always available. You get much better versions of them in the city. The dosa is pretty okay, and for Rs. 32 for the masala version, good value as a quick, light meal on its own.

Sandwiches are also available as Tomato, Cucumber or Boiled Egg. The mashed boiled egg sandwich is my favorite, light, fluffy with yummy egg goodness. Rs. 33.

A strange item is the Mutton Cutlet. For Rs. 45 you get two large cutlets and sauce. How can it be so cheap? Well, cos from experience, it is mostly an aloo cutlet, with some mutton hidden in it, I guess. Still, okay to have between two pieces of bread.

Service

Like all good, old school places, service is pretty poor, perhaps average on a good day. If you are a regular, you can expect to receive much better service, as I have seen certain elderly gentleman receiving. Still, the crowd these days harks more to a younger demographic than the old school set and the waiters dont seem to like this too much. If you come dressed in formals, you seem to get better service. Weird. Bust mostly, Service is brusque and to the point. Many a time, the bill comes way before you have finished your meal.

Prices

As listed in the Menu section above, no item costs above Rs. 50, with most being in the range of Rs. 20 - 35. At those prices, Indian Coffee House makes fantastic sense. After all, where else in the heart of MG-Brigade Road would you get a place to sit and have a few light snacks for less than Rs.100 for two. Nowhere. Of course, the menu has no fancy items, and eggs plus bread would obviously not cost much to make. Still, if you're on a tight budget and want to have so comforting snacks, Indian Coffee House makes sense.

Conclusion

Indian Coffee House is an anomaly. On the one hand, it does not seem to offer much in terms of decor or indeed food. But its USP is that it provides affordable simple sustenance in the heart of Bangalore. And for that, I think it deserves a recommendation.

Sepia mood with blue paint!

This place is one of those 'Bangalore heritage sites', not an eating destination per se ! As a further indication that times have moved on from the zeitgeist of this unglamorous place, India Coffee House has been displaced from its original MG Road location to a place on Church Street where further down the street towards Brigade road, you'll find trendy cafes like 'Matteo' whose facade could occupy any of the world's cosmopolitan loci. ICH ,meanwhile, with its yester-year ,slightly mofussil, definitely nostalgic air and settings doesnt need the gloss to draw in its customers because the regulars and curious souls will keep percolating in, to check out this old-town representative. Its eponymous product- a strong cup of coffee (with sugar and a bit of milk , not the American crude oil version!) - is arguably an added attraction for many, with the humble modestly priced menu not offering any transcendent delights. Still, in a style somewhat similar to Koshys parade cafe (not Koshys Jewel box!), this place succeeds in creating some reminiscence of the city's past decades.

Ambience and Service- Its glass front looks out on a compact grassy forecourt. The interior has glass walls on two sides, and the back of this small joint has the kitchen and the cramped, run-down hand-wash space(which could obviously do with some sprucing up).The walls are blue-washed, with clocks on either side, a photo of Mahatma Gandhi (he'd appreciate the spartan atmosphere here but not the mutton cutlets!) ;on one side, there's a big mirror reflecting a major chunk of the place's interiors(is it for or against indoor espionage?!) .The floor has small blue tiles, tables are formica topped and the atmosphere is neither stuffy nor expansive. The white-uniformed turbaned waiters do brisk service, ably encouraged by the ultra-fast kitchen. In many places, you ponder why the food takes so long to arrive, but here you'll wonder how they bang out the dishes so fast!

Food- Taste is above average to middling. Within five minutes of our order, the dishes started started steadily coming in- the one thing patrons wont complain about here is the speed of order arrival! Prices are very reasonable. Past customers recommended the Masala Dosa (Rs.26). I'd say its still above average- ,-but you'll find that many MD aficionados & connoisseurs will criticize it. The dosa texture and mouth-feel doesnt have that X-factor that keeps the customers religiously attracted to masala dosa hot-spots like Vidhyarthi Bhavan and Upahara Darshini (UD)-Gandhinagar branch. The potato-based masala and chutney dont spike up the experience either . They'll need to bring in some dosa experts to revitalize this item’s appeal in ICH.

The scrambled eggs with toast (costliest item on the menu at a princely tariff of Rs.45) just about makes the grade. Its on the blander side, and while many of the Brits and their kids might not complain, most of us will need it to perk it up with salt and pepper. The toast didnt boast of expected crunch either. In case you find the food deflating your experience ,remember to look around and chew on the scenery also. India Coffee House's no-frills functionality and continued maintenance of a bygone air is a blunt counter-point to the jazzed-up modern cafes serving insipid over-priced coffee. You'll find that many of the customers dont look like they belong to this present or recent decade, and spotting these antique patrons is another charm of this joint. After all, this place derives its mileage from its flash-back effect & ethos, and that is the main course that should be savoured here. Mutton cutlets at Rs.35 (the veg version is also there on the menu) further remind you that its best to settle for a light snack and coffee here. The hard-to-find mutton pieces are resolutely chewable and these breaded & mashed ,vaguely "milanese" type creations will have even the super-chefs wondering what ingredients are present in these stodgy, eminently undistinguished cutlets.

The menu also has tomato and egg sandwiches (Rs.25 to Rs.28) and variations like a 'tomato mince omelette'. 'Meals available' ! at lunchtime although I dont have feedback about these. Cold coffee (Rs.26) is not the shaken ,froth-crowned ,bliss-inducing affair here. Rather, its the chilled unadorned version of the usual hot cuppa!, and the best thing that can be said about it is that one can quaff it without gagging. The hot coffee is reasonably good and strong, albeit with a thin consistency –well-suited to those who’re looking to down at least 2-3 cups of this over a chat! The long-time clientele doesn’t find much difference in this product from the taste of yore ;the brew leans more towards the filter-coffee category rather than the instant variety ,but again, dont expect the thick-milk wallop given, for example, by the also-strong 'kaapi' in Maiyya's.

India Coffee House, then, is a place where you can hang out with certain pals and the regular crowd, slowly allowing the '60s ,70's feel to seep into your receptive mind. Its not the joint for those who exclusively dig the modern ,the chic and the happening. But if your girlfriend expressly and explicitly says ''take me to a coffee place of ye oldie Bangalore (or Bengaluru),minus the frills !" , then this could be the place to head for (assuming that such a retro dame exists!).

PS - One may now sit here ,reflect on our great 2011 World Cup victory and additionally reflect on the fact that 28 years ago this was one of the few still surviving places in which the previous generation analyzed and exulted in our 1983 triumph!

Absolute Humbug!
Jul 08, 2009 06:46 PM3535 Views

India Coffee House is a well known name. It is supposed to be a venerable Bangalore institution, purportedly serving the best of India's coffees made of the best beans, the finest roasting and perfect extraction.

HUMBUG! HUMBUG! and more HUMBUG!

What we were served in the garb of "Coffee" can best be described as dilute ditch water. The disappointment was all the greater in view of the extra effort we put in to locate ICH in its new premises on Church Street. The tomato omelette sandwich was also nothing to write home about, being of less than average standards.

Understandably, making good coffee is a fine art - which completely eludes India Coffee House. It is difficult to comprehend how a simple preparation like a tomato omelette sandwich can go wrong. My heartfelt recommendation is do not waste your time at India Coffee House if a good cup of coffee is what you seek.

A must visit with your old friends!!!
Jun 12, 2008 12:34 PM2562 Views

Its our regular hangout on Saturdays. Its an ideal place for old friends to meet.

What I like most about the place is the simplicicity as compared to the other coffee shops which are a big success for its happening crowd and ambience.

This place will remind you of your old college days, where every rupee had value. As soon as we get there we start talking about our good old times. I may sound like I'm very old, but its been just 2 years that I have been out of college, but 2 years is more than enough to forget all those good old times in the fast pace we are in or I would say we dont have time to sit and think back.

The first floor, it is a bit more calm and quiet as compared to the ground floor. About the food, its not an ideal place for a foodie. I would suggest this place for people who want to meet and have a nice time chatting with their friends.

The best dish to try is scrambled egg with toast(yum!). Its really different and I have never tasted this dish anywhere else. More than that,  you can have sandwitches or finger  chips and  off course accompanied by coffee to while your time.  The dosas are also good to taste especially the paper dosa.

Please do not expect great hospitality cause you may be dissappointed. Finally you may land up paying a huundred odd rupees for a group of 4 people.

Its a neat place where you can feel at home, you dont have to really bother about the service as, its not a resturant where people serve food on your plate. Just order your coffee and start chit chatting till your mouth aches:-)

Breakfast at India Coffee House
Apr 03, 2006 02:16 PM3669 Views

One place I really like to go for breakfast is India Coffee House. They open shop sometime between 8 to 8.30 am in the morning.

What I like about the place is the feeling that you are walking into an Old India. The place looks really old and you will find people sipping coffee and reading the papers, a true coffee shop experience which most other coffee shops have missed. There’s no distracting music, and if you want to have a wonderful conversation early in the morning, this is an excellent place to do that.

Scrambled Egg Toast is something that is very unique. I haven’t seen something like that at any other place. It’s a half fried egg placed on top of bread toast. When you add pepper and salt, the food is simply so yum!

Masala Dosas are different from the regular Shanthi Sagar Masala Dosas. Instead of samara and chutney, you get two different kinds of chutneys which are very delicious.

The other things on the menu include finger chips and bread with cheese and jam.

And coffee of course.

This place is good value for money, and everything is pretty cheap. Good food at MG Road, Bangalore, couldn’t get cheaper than this.

The only thing to probably look out is for the waiters who are sometimes impatient. They would want you out of the restaurant as soon as you have finished your food because they want to serve as many customers as they can, obviously for the tips.

To make sure you have a wonderful time at the Coffee House, make sure you do not visit the toilet. I recommend you have your breakfast in the ground floor itself. This is because you need to pass by a very stinky toilet to get around to the first floor. And think of coming down that way after you’re done with food… not a very appetizing feeling.

May be it’s a good idea picking a seat where you can see the road. It’s simply beautiful just looking out of the window into the sidewalk and the trees across the road.

But overall, it’s a wonderful place to take a friend out for breakfast. Nothing better than just sipping coffee and having a wonderful conversation. Enjoy yourself.
