Imagine - John Lennon Reviews

A Maverick who thrilled us - John Lennon
Oct 14, 2008 05:15 PM1732 Views

Statements from the Maverick

"Jesus was all right, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me”  The church reacted badly at him and call him mad. Then he told

“Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it”

His concept about God was a bit strange “I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.”

That Was John Lennon – the Liver Pool Boy was an anchor on which Bealtes was built. Majority of the people almost believed that he will be murdered and that happened on 8th December, 1980 at New York when he was shot dead at the age of 40.

Imagine -

Imagine is a song in the Album “Imagine” (1971) featuring Lennon and his second wife Yoko Ono.The rolling stone magazine rate this as the third best song in the world.According to John “This is an anti religious, anti nationalistic, anti conventional, anti capitalist song”

The lyrics were thought to be inspired by Lennon's hopes for a more peaceful world, though their origins are not known for certain. But the song's refrain may have been partly inspired by Yoko Ono’s poetry, in reaction to her childhood in Japan during World War II. (Might be for the same reason she is also featuring in the album)

Imagineis a song that has even got almost an equal status of national anthem in several countries and that itself shows the significance of the song.

In the album (which is available in You Tube) – the scenes are very beautifully directed where in John and Yoko going to their house from outside (where the whether is cold) – John singing and playing piano and Yoko open all curtains and light coming inside the home!

Critcism

Journalist and broadcaster Robert Elms said "Imagine" was written by a "multi-millionaire with one temperature-controlled room in his Manhattan mansion just to store his fur coats.

Elvis Costello also commented satirically on the song in "The Other Side of Summer", wherein he asks the question, "Was it a millionaire who said 'Imagine no possessions'?"

Johns Reaction (courtesy Play Boy Magazine)

Lennon, during an interview with Playboy magazine, was criticized on a similar note for his wealth, and defended himself by pointing out how difficult it is to leave a materialist world behind once you are caught up in it, comparing this to leaving the Beatles:

PLAYBOY: "Why does anyone need $150,000,000? Couldn't you be perfectly content with $100,000,000? Or $1,000,000?"

LENNON: "What would you suggest I do? Give everything away and walk the streets? The Buddhist says, 'Get rid of the possessions of the mind.' Walking away from all the money would not accomplish that. It's like the Beatles. I couldn't walk away from the Beatles. That's one possession that's still tagging along, right? If I walk away from one house or 400 houses, I'm not gonna escape it."

That was John and Imagine for you. Whether you like or hate John and Beatles, I appeal all of you to listen to this song! You wont regret!

A Mid-Summer night’s Dream

This happens to be my all time favorite song (or a wish if I may call it so!) I was quite appalled to find no reviews on any of Beatle’s works and so felt obliged to offer my humble opinion on one such piece of artwork by Sir John Lennon.

Imagine there's no heaven

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today...

{

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace...

} 2

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one

} 3

{

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will live as one

Having read the lyrics, you jolly well know what I am driving at here. The sanctity of its lyrics is what I would have, in my personal opinion, preferred to be the “New World Order” as opposed to the prevailing “Democracy by Force” recipe ordered by Uncle Sam!

The video of this song shows Sir Lennon with his wife Ms.Yoko Ono playing the piano and taking the high road in a philosophical tone. But what if we could really make all of it true?—Wow, the world would be quite a different place in space and time!

The first part reminds us of the meaninglessness of aspiring to be in heaven or working our way towards hell when we have a glorious nice and sunny present day to relish and learn from.

The second warns us of the misfortune we risk bringing upon ourselves with our petty desires to fight for land or religion. I find this the most progressive thought of all times. If you think of it, why on earth do we divide and rule or segregate and discriminate or simply in a highly unfathomable mode of thinking, fight over different versions of an inane spirit we call God! In my personal view, religion followed by power are the only two reasons which create disharmony.

The third piece is just about the millions of drops making up the ocean which is much easier said than understood and done by the brainwashed majority in this world.

The fourth is the toughest of all virtues-to share and care. Greed-one of the 7 sins- is a vice we all cultivate but I can imagine it having a diminishing effect if power and religion can be , at one or the other time in this millennium, be wiped of from this planet!

These lyrics were written before I was born, but they are as relevant and important today than at any other point in time. A soft voice such as this great singer’s isn’t enough to make people change their minds. But somewhere in the crowd here and somewhere there, I do find a spark of revolution which I hope one day evolves into a Jungle fire.

You may say I am giving a sermon, but am I the only one? :)

Imagine The Perfect Song

Genre Rock

Evaluation To this day John Lennon's best album. That's not to say that every song on it is a classic. Believe me there are a lot of clunkers on this thing, but they are far overshadowed by some of the best music Lennon has ever recorded. The hi-lights:

1) Imagine - To this day probably one of the greatest songs ever written. The words alone without the music are enough to put it in that category. But the music only puts the cherry on this banana split of perfection.

2) Jealous Guy - Musically an even better song than Imagine though lyrically it doesn't hold a candle. Still this song is one of Lennon's most beautiful and deserves to be called one of his best.

3) I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama - The lyrics of this song are purely haunting. ''I don't want to be a soldier mama, I don't want to die.'' You can't put it anymore clearly than that.

4) Oh Yoko - A lot of people think this song is just plain silly, but if this infectious pop tune doesn't make you smile from ear to ear then there is something wrong with you. One of Lennon's most enjoyable tunes.

Bottom Line Buy this album and try to look past Lennon's quirky non descript tunes. The above 4 will make you glad you did.
