Hotel Malvan, Vasant Vihar, Thane Reviews

A Bizzare Experience
Sep 04, 2009 11:19 PM 2481 Views

Hotel Malvan, Thane once used to be our choice of restaurant for Malvani food in Thane. The reason I am writing this review is that it was a good to very good restaurant serving Malvani food in Thane 5 years back. Even though the place was stinking and with below par ambiance we were visiting this place for food which was very good.

The crab masala, gaboli, and malvani thali was our fav items. However, few days back when my family went there, in March 2008, in the afternoon at 1.15 p.m. and ordered the food it was a bizarre experience! When asked about our order about 20 mins afterwards we were told that we will start preparing now..the same experience was faced by 2 other families sitting in a family section.

A member from one of the family sitting there went to the kitchen and saw that staff was sort of fighting amongst themselves(to avoid work).

When we asked if we can go.we overheard from the manager handling galla.that we can go if wanted. I havent experienced such pathetic attitude &service from staff at any place. We were shocked by indifferent attitude shown by owner/manager. We got up and we also saw other 2 families were also following suit.

Drawing from my vast & varied experience I am sure that the owner has either gone in to politics.and doing well.or has become a builder.and now doesnt bother much to run the joint. The joint? Yes, by the way hotel's outside section, where liquor is served in quarter system, was doing well catering to agents of all sort.

One thing is sure for us - Malvan chapter is closed for us forever.

Malvani food

Malvan at paanch pakahadi is a good restaurent. It is situated at one of the most prominent locations of thane. the look and feel is not up to the mark which if improved can attract many more customers.  The ground floor is dingy looking place and in the evening seems to be best suited for drinking crowd. the first floor is also quite dingy, but any food love won't mind sitting there for a tasty malvani food. the baithak is a good place for a group of people more than 5.

The chiken/ mutton thali are the best things offered incase you are looking for value of money. The mutton bhaat is equally good although the quality and the quantity as per the price charged has reduced in the last few years. The fish fry and the praws masala are good. My personal favourite remains the Mutton sukha with bhakri. The customer service has to be improved. the majority of the waiters are maharashtrian and i've noticed that it is difficult for customers to explain them wat they want.

Good that they have changed the language of the menu card now. Overall a good place to have the typical malvani spicy food.

Not good experience for me too

I too don't have very good memories of this restaurant, though I did not face the people-attitude problems.

We went there as a group of friends (about ten of us) and ordered the typical Malvani food. We were provided for on the first floor. What I didn't like about the place was that we had to squat on dari, around a large rectangular table which was about a foot or so in height. They said, this is how it is for larger groups. I have a problem in my knee due to a past accident, and it was difficult for me to remain squatted, with crossed legs, for more than 15 - 20 minutes.

The food was typical Malvani, but the presentation was not to my taste. They did'nt provide good styles dishes etc. It looked more like a gharelu affair. Not recommended for family visits, typically once in a month outings. Ths may be ok-dokey for regular visitors (bachelors etc.) but certainly not for relaxing family type dinners.

Food-wise, it was typical Malvani. Chicken curry had two small bony pieces of chicken. Nothing to rave about ... I don't know why one of my Malvani friends recommended this place to me.

The waiters also looked typical from Konkan area, with no polish. A trfle rustic - ''khanavaleet la porya''- types .. if you know Marathi a bit, you will understand what I mean.

The positive: Sol Curry was superb. I think I had three-four glass full.

Food that touches your soul

The first time I went to Malvan was about 7 years back. My wife and I wanted to order, but the menu was in Marathi. Naturally we asked for a menu in English. This proved to be a big problem.

After searching high and low, the waiter finally came back, grudgingly, with an English menu. We ordered the food, which turned out to be GREAT.

Then came the bill. The amount was vastly different from what we had mentally calculated. We asked for the menu once again to check, and noticed quite a few discrepancies in the bill. When we pointed this out to the manager, he calmly told us that this was NATURAL, since we had looked at the English menu!! According to him, the Marathi menu had the correct prices and descriptions. The English menu was only for understanding what was available, not for checking the prices, ( despite the fact that prices were clearly mentioned) explained the manager.

Luckily, the prices are affordable and we were saved from a very big embarassment.

The second time I went to this place to take home some food. Again I was presented with a Marathi menu. On asking for an English menu, the waiters and the manager, glared at me menacingly, and ''ordered'' me to learn Marathi if I wanted to eat here. Being truly hungry, and not for vegetables, I was forced to order from the marathi menu, with ''help'' from the waiters who kept speaking in Marathi and seemed to be constantly making fun of me. I wondered if they were conspiring against me.

When I reached home and opened the food packets, My wife and I were shocked to see what looked like leftovers! I am not joking! The chicken contained ONLY bones, with NO flesh. All traces of meat seemed to have vanished. The less said about the fish, the better.

After this experience, My wife and I decided that we would never eat in this place again. I also decided NEVER to even try to learn Marathi.

However, Thane has so little to offer when it comes to non vegetarian food that, I actually went back to this place this year. The marathi menu is still forced down our throats, even though the population of Thane is now changing. But I did see one significant change - there were a few English menus available, and the waiters were actually helpful. So every once in a while, when I am fed up of the vada pav kendras and the highly priced udipi fare in Thane, and my soul just cries out for some flesh, I land up there.
