Hey everyone! I have visited hoganakkal a few years ago with my family members. It is a gorgeous place for the picnic with family and especially for children. Here you can enjoy to your core. I would like to share something about hoganakkal. It is one of the best picnic spot in Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the dharmapuri district which is 48 km of distance. We can reach hoganakkal by air through Salem airport which is 63km away. Then by road there is various routes like from Salem, Bangalore etc. By train we can come to Salem or dharmapuri and then by using roads we can reach hoganakkal. Local sightseeing: important sights are waterfalls, hanging bridge, melagiri hills, hanuman and parameshwari temples, etc are considered to be the beautiful picnic spots. Other activities: oil massage, boating, fish fries etc. Oil massage is the speacial thing in hoganakkal and their serviceHotels and accommodation: there are lot and lot of hotels have came according to the budget of all kind of people. Then coming to food here you can get fresh fish frys which will taste awesome. The fishes are getting from the hoganakkal itself. Safety: there are many guards and polices are made available to avoid unwanted activities. So it will be secure place for everyone. So I suggest you all to have your vacation in a pleasant manner.

Dear friends, few years back I went to this Picnic place. In this connection I would like to share my experience to all.

Hoganakkal is situated in Dharmapuri Dt, Tamilnadu. It surrounded by Mountains & rocks. Kavery water which came from karnataka that place called as Hoganakkal.

The main Sightseeing is Water falls. I didn;t saw this type of force water in any-where. Water is very pure & chillness. If we bath in the falls our health is giving good energy to us. Secondly, Boating is the memorable experience in this falls. Lot of Boatmen availible here. They went nearly 10km in this false to me. Its gives me a good & memorable experience to me.

According to Accomodation, Dharmapuri is the nearest town from Hoganakkal. In Dharmapuri nominal rate Hotels availible.

But my kind advice is before 06.00 pm we should enter in falls, Late hour is very danger in this water falls.

Let ME describe the falls here to you, they're not terribly high and one such falls wouldn't be a good factor, however here the cauvery leaps down over an outsized space making around fifteen such waterfalls that make nice scenery. Then the small boat took US down the stream through a gorge onto the additional calm areas wherever we tend to had cannon fodder caught Associate in Nursingd deep-fried right before us! when around an hour of loitering on the stream and obtaining underneath a number of the falls, we tend to went back to land.

There is a TTDC building that serves tight food then we tend to we tend tont back to the falls space to go to the Hanging bridge that is a viewpoint to nevertheless additional waterfalls! This place is additionally notable for taking a massage and bathing within the falls here however we didn't select it.

For heading back we tend to we tend tore told that there was a shorter and smart road to Hosur however we couldn't realize it however took another road to Hosur via Palakodu and Rayakottai that whiskerless off thirty kms from the journey. we tend to started from Hogenekal at 3:30 and reached metropolis at 7:30 .

All in all a good trip(the solely minus being the dangerous roads in some sections)

This falls is nearly about 200kms from Bangalore. Planned the outing during monsoon to witness the waterfalls in all its glory & it dint disappoint me. Infact the water was soo full that the coracle was not allowed to sail near the TN side. Karnataka side falls reminds me of the Niagara I have seen in pictures. To enjoy the complete waterfalls, coracle ride is a must. They charge Rs960 for 6 people. There is a lil bit of trek that you need to undertake in between the coracle ride so wear comfy shoes. Your 1st trip to this place will really leave you spell bound. PS: This was my 3rd visit.

Spoiler Alert

  • This place can be a turn off if you are a veggie like me. They catch, fry masala coated fishes & sell it right there. The stench fills the air & also you will notice the fish bones thrown around by some of our careless Indians after eating.

  • You will find half naked men enjoying an oil massage or taking bath in the river which is not a pleasant sight to see. Also there are many men who act like jerks because they are completely sloshed. So ladies need to be weary of how they dress.

  • There are entrance fees collected at every step. Also they collect Rs30 for parking but it was so crowded that whole area was filled with vehicles & we kept circling to find a place to park on the roadside.

GuruSriGuru:Hogenakkal Waterfalls
Dec 22, 2010 11:26 AM 11110 Views

Last Republic Day we went to Hogenakkal Waterfalls.

One of my classmates Suresh called me on Friday night for Hogenakkal Waterfalls trip with his colleagues on that next Tuesday i.e. Republic Day. I simply accepted it without any other thought as I was planning for the same for a year or so.

But on the Monday evening he called up again and said the trip is cancelled as one of his colleagues is not well. I was disappointed. As a last chance we checked with other friends. Finally one other classmate Subbu and our common friend Vardha also joined with us for the trip.

Suresh, Subbu, Vardha and me started on 26th Jan early morning. We cached Ernakulam Express from Bangalore Cantonment railway station to Dharmapuri at 6.30AM. Dharmapuri is the nearest railway station to reach Hogenakkal Waterfalls.

We reached Dharmapuri around 8.30AM. After having good Breakfast with Mottu Dosai(Egg Dosa) and Pongal near Dharmapuri bus station, started journey to Hogenakkal by bus. It was around one and half an hour journey to that place.

After getting out of bus, as usual many localites surrounded us offering boat services and Oil massage services. We did not pick any one of them for the service.

We directly went to waterfalls and started walking around the place. There were many guys having oil massage. But we did not go for that as the surrounding environment looks very dirty.

There is a small waterfall near the entrance. This is not the main Hogenakkal Waterfall. After a walk for 10 mins on the rocks we can see other waterfalls named as Cini Waterfalls and Main waterfalls.

You can see main waterfalls atop of these hilly rocks or you can hire a boat service. We hired a boat service. It is round boat. We call it as teppa in Telugu language. We paid Rs500/- for a 3 hours service.

We got into the boat. Subbu, Suresh, Vardha and Boatwala sit four sides of the boat and I managed in the middle.

First we visited to Main waterfalls. Waterfalls are smaller as it was not a rainy season. We managed to go near the water fall and get wet beneath the falls. Then we had a circular boat ride near the waterfalls. This was amazing.

There was a shop with cool drinks and snacks in a boat in this lake. We purchased one bottle of Sprite and 2 Lays packets for Rs150/-. After having snacks we went around the lake for some time. During this boat ride we went to a hill. This is Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Border. That side of the Hill is Karnataka and this side is Tamil Nadu. We had some Tender coconuts on top of the hill and come back to boat.

One of our friends wanted to have a bath in the lake. So we went to a place which is convenient for bath. We came out of boat, took some photo graphs and started enjoying high at this place. One friend started swimming(Actually he know very little swimming). Other two started capturing photographs around this place. I started enjoying with Sunbath.

I just started with my sunbath, but I could not enjoy it as one of my friends lost his gold ring while swimming. We searched for that for an hour or so. As you know we could not get it back.

Finally we started our journey back to hill top to catch bus to Dharmapuri. While going back we have seen a small cave where a Tamil/Telugu Film Jaganmohini starring Namitha & Raja was pictured.

We could not catch Train back to Bangalore. So we reached Bangalore around 12.00AM night by bus.

Accommodation - No Accommodation available

Food - Average, Roasted fishes are available all over this place

Transportation - State run Buses are available, but not very frequent

Hoganakkal - a small slice of heaven on earth
May 19, 2010 03:02 PM 10119 Views

Friends, don't read travelogues to get an idea about Hoganakkal - just visit the place. An unusual experience - not your regular beaches, mountains, mall road, temple outing.

Highly accessible from Bangalore(good roads), it is a small slice of heaven on earth. The rock formations are outstanding - especially where the whirlpools of rainy season have carved them over centuries. The deep river on one side(with steep black walls) of the sandbar and shallow river on the other for frolicking is one of its kind. When the boatman spins you in the shallow, flimsy, reed boat at high speed in the middle of the river - you can scream from fear and exhilaration at the same time. The more adventurous can go under a waterfall to be drenched completely. This can be followed by fried fish and massages on the beach for soothing your nerves.

Some things you should - as Nike says it -'Just Do It'. This is one of those things. Just one hiccup - you have to bargain hard for hiring the boat and other facilities. There are no fixed prices.

Hogenakkal, India's Niagara
Apr 06, 2010 01:01 PM 11241 Views

Hogenakkal, the so called India's Niagara is a water fall on river Kaveri in Dharmapuri district of TamilNadu. It is only 175Km from Bangalore, you can take Bangalore-Hosur-Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri-Hogenakkal roure, the roads are in excellent condition.

Once you reach there, you have to bargain with the coracle(small boat made of bamboo) people to get a good deal. The official rate is Rs.50 but for a 3hrs ride they charge Rs.100 per head, you can reduce this price if you have good bargaining skills. The coracle guy takes you very near to the water falls, the water may fall on you, it will be a thrilling experience. Then a ride through the river, you can see only smoking rocks(meaning of Hogenakkal) on both sides. You can take a bath in the river if you want and you can have fresh water fish there itself. There are few more places like crocodile park, hanging bridge, you can enjoy a full day with your family or friends.

Note: In summer, the place will be too crowded, also it will be too hot. You can see food and plastic waste everywhere on the island. Best time to visit is just after monsoon but if you want to enjoy the boat ride, summer is also a good option.

I have uploaded some snaps here:

Hoganakkal/ hogenakkal
Nov 04, 2009 12:21 PM 9171 Views

This one day trip started with us waking up around 6. We used the public transport to get there from Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Tamil Nadu is a neighboring state and it takes about 5 hours to get to hogenakkal by Bus. We caught a bus from silk board to Dharmapuri.

They give a 10 minute break at Hosur where you can have breakfast (From one of the stalls)..From Dharmapuri we had to catch a second bus to Hogenakkal. After you pass Pennagaram on the way to Hogenakkal, you will find picturesque valleys on your left. if you want pictures, try to get a seat on the left side of the bus(I wish we had) ...

As it was almost lunch time, we decided to have lunch before we started the tour of the place. we had a decent lunch (what is called Sapat..you may want to remember this) and asked for a chicken masala on the side. Once you enter the place by paying Rs. 2, you will see a lot of round boats and people fix a price before you start. I think we over paid as we paid Rs 600 for 3 of us. If you take the boat just for yourself, you can make him wait as long as you want and wont have to worry about other people getting late. If you want to make it cheaper, you can share it with others as it can carry about 10 people.

First he crossed the stream and took us to where we could climb onto a watch tower and get the view of the entire place. this is a wonderful spot for photography. look to the left and you will get the valleys in the background as well. After this we got down to a place where some young boys ask for money to jump off a cliff into the water 30 feet below. we were told that the water at this point is 80 feet deep. Our conscience pricked us to make them jump so we just clicked pictures of their silhouttes and got into the boat and moved along the stream. As we reach half way along the stream, the boats man started spinning us real fast .. I think he was dizzy after that too..it was fun..

https://flickr.com/photos/dropcrack/4067867005/in/photostream/

After a long slow boat ride we reach a second spot wher we have to get off and walk about a kilometer to reach a place where we again ride on the boat to get to the main fall. You will see still water and smoke/ water vapor coming up at the center. You can hear the fall at this point but can see nothing. Only when you reach the waterfall can you see the actual beauty of the whole place. The fall is beautiful but nobody can get under it though. After this, we crossed to reach the place where the boatsman was waiting and had one of the popular fried fish. It was well cooked and tasty.

It took us about 2 and a half hours as we had hired the boat for ourselves. It will take longer if you take boats from one spot to another and dont make them wait. It seems there is a hanging bridge .. we saw it from a distance but didnt feel it was really a hanging bridge so we started back around 430. Reached dharmapuri by 6 and reached back bangalore around 10.

It was a day well spent.

The place is perfectly safe even for people to travel alone. There will be enough people around on a sunday and except a few beggars, nobody will bother you .

Pay taxes ... toll ... n make your back worst
Oct 02, 2009 04:38 PM 5672 Views

Travlling by road is becoming worst ... even if you pay alot of money towards toll ... like wise was travelling regulary from mumbai to loni near sangamner via goti area which saves 30 km ( if u travel via nasik to go to loni its takes more 30 kms) but when you pass through that piece of 20 kms you feel like you have travelled almost more than 100 kms..

Its so damaged road and when ever you ask this toll people you get the answer .. yes saab ab thodhe dino me naya rasta banege??? hum logo ne video road ka video banake approval ke liye bhej diya hai....ab thode hi dino me order gom office se aajayega.. but when ...no one kn0ws .. God save us ...and may be goverment can save us... if travel in foreign copuntry this type of road on which the toll is colleted they make sure it has got all facilities .. even while any emegeies road works they make by pass roads... but there is big diff betn our bay pass roads and their by pass roads.. our normal roads in such a bad condition than what about by pass one....d shukla

Misty waterfalls - Hogenekkal
Oct 02, 2009 04:00 PM 5687 Views

A smooth black stretch of toll paid road lay ahead of me …. I was driving down to Hogennekkal with my family last Saturday [ 26th Sept’09].Take the Poonammalle > Kancheepuram > Vellore > Dharmapuri > Krishnagiri > Hogennekkal route. You would be paying toll for around Rs 140 one way – but would save you petrol and back aches !Do carry foodstuffs if you are travelling with kids.

I did not find a good place for breakfast.I started around 5.30a.m – and after a stop over for a sugary tea , reached the TTDC Hotel in Hogennekkal at 11.05 a.m. Pretty good timing for the 335 kms – one must say !Couple of pointers :

1 ] there is no other place for overnight stay apart from TTDC [ there are a couple besides the bus stand – but from the looks – it was not inviting ; and

2 ] do take a licensed boatman [ they were a blue shirt and have a license ] and please do listen to them while on the river.I had booked a double bed room with A/C @ Rs 900 / day. The rooms are basic but clean sheets and a clean wash room is usually what I look for in a government hotel.

The food is a bit pricey and they do not serve all items on the menu – it’s usually dosa or meals ! Try out the Bismillah Hotel next to the bus stand for paranthas and fried chicken.Having put in the luggage in our rooms – I started looking for a boatman and found one to my liking ! He quoted Rs 2800 for two coracles [ and not boats as I keep referring ] – which ultimately got settled for Rs 1400 [ 2 adults + 2 kids in one and 2 adults + 1 kid in the other coracle ].

We were comfortably seated in the coracles and off the boatman went.He actually starts from a higher reach of the river Cauvery and moves swiftly through pools of swirling water towards the two main falls – one on Karnataka side and the other on Tamil Nadu side.Take your camcorder – I was having doubts about where it would be difficult managing the water – it is difficult in parts – but overall you can manage….You would be visiting the falls on Karnataka side first. Please follow the boat man’s instruction as he guides you through the half submerged rocks upto the gorgeous falls !

Five clear distinct torrents of bubbling white water with the roar of a thousand cannons – stand there and enjoy. Peek down the gorge for a glimpse of the frothing water and it moves through the cuts and crevices.Use your camcorder – mist and water would cascade down your hair into the lens, mine did not get impacted. [ I thoroughly wiped the lenses post this drenching ].Feeling like having a coke ? There’s a vendor standing with cold drinks !

I remember Bhusi Dam near Matheran – it was giving me the same feeling .I spent around 45 minutes in this places and moved on towards the Karnataka coast for some bathing in the still waters. You would need to walk some 200 metres with the boatman along the coast to find a suitable quite bathing place. On the way pick up some fried fish! I didn’t – the frying oil was suspect !You can stand in the waist deep water – there is a mild drag in the water – but kids can manage on their own.

Splash around for an hour if you want and then head back towards the Tamil Nadu falls.Hold on tight to the bamboo meshing on the coracle floor as and when you hit whirlpools on the way and keep clicking .Walk over the concrete path way and if you can manage the fear – then step near the gorge to hear the water fall hundreds of feet below….There is also a watch tower for having a clearer water free view of the waterfalls.Since the water falls was overflowing , we did not get in the narrow waterways next to the gorge. The local kids jump from the overhanging rocks in the swirling water for a meagre Rs 10!

That’s all – said the boatman and came back to the hotel after 2.30 minutes of thrilling and refreshing boat ride. Next day morning I walked down the road to the Hanging bridge – it seems that you can have a full view of the water falls from this place. But luck was not on my side – the over flowing water made it dangerous to cross the concrete pathway and the local police were not allowing people to go nearby. Bemoaning my bad luck – I feasted my eyes on the fresh water catch – the rates are similar to Chennai rates! The TTDC hotel has a big field within its boundary making the kids go wild with joy – running, playing hide and seek or even cycling [ cycles are available on hire @ Rs 30 / hr for kids ].

Feeling fully refreshed I started back on Monday.Took a detour at Vellore for visiting the fort … wouldn’t recommend visiting the city just for this place. Go straight into the city, take the first right and first left.. you would find the fort on your right side…You can park your vehicle inside the fort and then take a walk on the ramparts.I had a walk , took photos and then went for a horse ride in a tonga [ Rs 5 / kid and Rs 10 / adult ]… would suggest that you do this – for walking around the fort is going to be a time consuming affair , especially when there’s nothing of historical importance [ there might be – but it was not evident ]There’s a Shiva temple inside the fort – if you have visited Kanchipuram – the similarity in architecture is evident.I did make a stop over this time at a dhaba – 40 kms before Vellore and then had lunch at 5 p.m at Vellore Highway before hitting the accelerator towards Chennai.Reached Chennai at 8 p.m – bone tired , but with sparkling images of the waterfall in my mind !

Trip to Hogenakkal
Sep 08, 2009 02:02 AM 10282 Views

I had plan to visit Hogenakal long back, visited many travalogues to get the details, After visiting the place, I decided to write something which others didnt cover. I started my journey from Vijayanagar.

There are two routes to reach Hosur road, One from Jayanagar, BTM layout and then Hosur. second one was Mysore road then take left to NICE road till Bannerghatta, Jigani and Bommasandra and Hosure road. I took second rout to avoid the trafiic. But I end up with long distance and worst road (After bannerghatta).Next route was Hosur -> Krishnagiri ->Dharmapuri ->Pennagaram ->Hogenakkal. Distance is 185KM.

ROUTE : when Dharmapuri is about 3KM, there is flyover, don't go over that, take left and then rigth (below the flyover) Hegenakkal is 42KM from that place. road is good. the overall rating for the route is 9/10.

Parking/Toll fees : When Hogenakkal is about 9KM, there is toll gate to collect Rs 20 (with reciept) Beside that, there is policeman to register your vehicle (Pay Rs 10 without reciept)

Again at the entrance, pay Rs 10 to park your vehicle on the road. About Boatman:When you enter the place, suddenly 3-4 boatman will surround your vehicle. they would demand 500 -800 per ride. If you are family of two person, negotiate for Rs 300 for 2 hrs.

In addition to that, they will ask you to pay Rs 100 to carry the boat to another end by tempo or mini vans, don't agree. Make sure the ride charge includes carrying the boat to other end. Don't forget to ask the boatman to show his identity card. Govt has issued ID cards for boatmans. One boat can carry 5-6 persons, if you are in a group more than 6-8 persons, its better to hire 2 boats. There will be waiting charges if you would like to spend extra time near the falls. please talk to them before fixing the charges.

Water fall : Waterfall is not visible unless you hire the boats to reach the place. There are two water falls, one belong to Karnataka, other one to Tamilnadu. Its the part of Cauvery river and it is about 250 meters above the sea level. Water falls from the hieght of 20 Meters with rocking sound. The boatman will first take you to the Karanataka falls.

After spending some time, he will take you to another end of river where people sells the fishes. You need to getdown there and can have some fried fish then walk for a minute, your boatman is waiting for you The food may not be hygenic, but I saw most of the people were enjoying the fish. After visiting Karnataka side, boatman will move towords Tamilanadu falls. There is a viewpoint tower (Fee Rs 2) to see the waterfall. If you are carrying your food, there is no place to sit and have lunch. You can do it in boat while riding.

Body massage : Along with the roaring water falls, there is facility to get your body rejuvanate by having massage. There are seperate masseurs for male & female visitors at seperate location.

Standard rates are Rs 50 for head massage for 10-15 minutes and Rs100 for full body massage for 30-45 minutes. These people should also have valid licence for massage.

Travel tips : The place is very hot. You need to carry caps. Take care of your clothes while riding on boat. The boats are tarred, that may leave mark on your cloths. Do not wear pointed footwares as it is diffucult to walk. Be careful while walking on rocks.

Food :I strongly advice you to carry your own food. Only fried fishes are available in the river bank. Hotels are not good enough to serve better food. There is a hotel operated by TTDC

Other places to visit: There is Crocodile park, and Aquarium. Not worth to visit. Accomodation : It is always advisable to spend the day in Hogenakkal and come out before night. TTDC operates a hotel. KSTDC runs a tourist bunglow (080-2275869, 2275883) Hotel Tamilnadu ( 04342-56447, 54448). Hotel CM. There are good hotels available in the nearest city Dharmapuri (45 km). Best hotels suggested are 1. Adhiyaman Palace 2. Rama Boarding 3. Hotel Saravana. Overall : If you have already seen the Jog falls (Near Sirsi.Karnataka), this is not worth to see.

How to go:

The best means is by car. dont relay on govt. busess.

climate:

average not so hot.

what to enjoy at hognekal:

eating fish, having a wonderfull bath at the falls, a good massage, the small boat (parisal) ride, toddy.

place to stay: the best placet to stay at hognekal is ttdc cottage, better book in advance and it is the only good place to stay at hognekal

caution: avoid eating a lot of fish from different places - since the fish are kept for almost a day there is a chance of getting food poisoning, going in the small boat is extremely dangerous avoid it if you are travelling with children because the river is highly unstable and any thing can happen at anytime and the boat is also a safe one, it has the chance of seeping in of water  and has no safety features. Even though the boatman gives you a secure feeling he is not 100% sure of what happens in water

worthiness: even though the rish are high it can be equalized by the sensation you get when you have a massage and a good bath at the waterfalls. go to the falls during night and you can enjoy the maximum

the duration of stay: best is one day and one night.

with whom to go: the best is go there with friends and if you are going with family let the members be adult.

Hoganakkal Bike Trip

On line travel blogs really helps to know many noteworthy points about a place. From one of such blogs I came to know that other than via Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, we can go via Raykottai and Pannagram cutting off distance to 150 kms. Stimulus can do miracles and here it give way to a wonderful and thrilling bike trip.

To Raykottai

We didn't expect such a nice and recently tarred road. Sceneries on either side made the ride from Hosur more exciting. Nilby's official calls on the way and Lijith's concern about mileage separated discover from normal flow of our bikes' formation at 70 – 80 kms per hour. As the third rider, I slowed down later to pick discover and proceed further as two pairs. Sunset caused opposite headlights drill down into our eyes. Slight shower followed by heavy rain gave us tea break before Raykottai.

Dinner halt and further ride.

Most of us wanted to go to ATM. Next SBI ATM that we saw on the way at Palacode didn't save its purpose. SBI have many ATMs but a very few give what you expect. Vegetarian hotel with only Puri and Dosai served our dinner at 8.30 pm. Before starting from Palacode, I noticed the cracked wiser of my bike's head light. This worried me a little bit due to the thought of spending a couple of thousands on the way. After 5 minutes, resuming the trip, this worry turned out to be a shock suddenly, as my bike's head light busted with a sound, to feel mighty darkness.

Now I am the fourth rider, and I should follow Nirmal, the third bike at inches separation without any fail to avoid a complete black out or isolation. It was the time for a real co – ordination. Nirmal give way for me as third biker, tuning himself to fourth. Lijith was in front governing the speed to be at 50 – 60 kms/ hr, followed by Vipin. Long 40 – 50 kms of ride further as a uniformly packed four wheels of a vehicle, was a little bit boring but at the same time nice to watch at. My pulsar was not at all feeling that it doesn't have a head light.

Hogenekkal at Night

Masala talks and comments along with wine is off course a good refreshment. If it is after a long bike ride and call for wake up at early 6 in the morning, how it will be? We enjoyed a great time on the terrace from 11 pm to 2 am evaluating great theories of life, before mugging into deep sleep which was allowed only for 4 hours.

Hoganakkal Falls

Shocking news of “boat men on strike” welcomed us in the morning. I don't know the reason for strike but I knew that we were not going to board on any coracles. Some boat men gave some hope, bargaining at Rs 350/- per head for taking us for a ride. Off course that was a big budget for us after checking our own wallets. Since we were not able to draw money from any ATM on the way, we altogether had a “huge” sum of around Rs. 3000/- for everything including breakfast, lunch or snacks. We calculated, split the budget and decided to bargain and fix the price maximum upto Rs 250/- per head before boat men. But after breakfast, they told that strike was very serious and they won't be able to help us. Thus core part which motivated Hoganakkal trip melted away.

Most important quality of a traveler should be the readiness and ability to adapt to any given situation. This evolved theory turned out as a solution for us at around 8 am. We started walking towards the falls and found that water flowing in the river is much lesser than what I saw a few years back. We proceed further to see a big mountain in the background of river and nearby trees and bushes which made the scenery much beautiful. After some debates regarding the cleanliness of water, we jumped into it feeling the warmth of natural flowing water. River was not so deep, but strength of flow didn't allow us to swim or walk in the opposite direction. Some of us crossed the river by walking through it and enjoyed the sandy shore on the other side.

Return Journey

After seeing India – Aussies cricket match for some time, we packed and started our journey back at 11.30 am. Instead of opting for the nice road we came, the information of “just 120 kms from Hoganakkal to Bangalore” from hotel guy gave us the challenge of exploring the unknown path. It was Hoganakkal - Natarpalayam – Anchetty – Dahanikottai – Attibelle - Bangalore. We were also eager to see a shooting spot where malayalam film “Naran” with Mohanlal was shot.

Initial 6 kms were miserable with no tarred road, full of gutters and uneven stones paved, we even thought about going back to Hoganakkal. After that things changed a little bit. For another 5 – 6 kms road was very fine, then again bad road for another 15 kms till Natarpalayam. There was not petrol bunks or hotels on the way. Everybody were feeling hungry, and we comforted ourselves with tea, water, bun and biscuits.

Everybody were desperate for a break and some tea. No hotels were found there to have a proper lunch. Hosur was just 25 kms away and we decided to post pone the lunch till 2 pm. We were confident to reach Hosur at least by 2 pm with 80 km/hr avg speed. I got the chance to go in front and I don't know why Nilby jumped on my bike to come with me. I had a label of rash driving and I thought this will be the right time to perform. Speedometer jumped to 90 as we started. Slight shower didn't help to reduce the speed. Speedometer was ticking between 90 – 110 km/hr all the way for next 20 kms till we saw a diversion. One was to Attibelle and another to Hosur. We decided to take a halt, till others arrive. Nirmal's TVS victor appeared first, then Discover and Splendor.

Unexpected accident

We opted to go to Attibelle for a shorter drive. Lijith started first, followed by Vipin. Myself started with a small delay as third biker and Nirmal as fourth. I picked up speed to see the bikes in front. When I checked the rear view mirror after some time, I was surprised to not see any trace of Nirmal's Victor. I saw the other bikes soon and we proceed further. Suddenly Ejaz on Lijith's Discover got a call and everybody stopped. Shocking news of TVS Victor's accident was to follow. We hurried back, and fortunately accident's impact was not so severe. We proceed to Attibelle for a hospital to dress Nirmal's and Arun sarath's wounds. We reached back at our Madiwala home at 4 pm.

Bangalore INDIA
Day Trip to Hogenakal

Hello All,

This is a review of a trip I took with my wife and in-laws to the Hogenakal falls on river Cauvery on the KAR-TN border.

We started from Bangalore (near Silk board) at 6:45 a.m. I was driving and we took the Hosur road and continued till Krishnagiri (world class road / toll). Before Krishnagiri, we stopped for breakfast (there were no decent places after that till destn. so proved to be a good move). From Krishnagiri, we took the NH 7 till Dharmapuri (very bad road ). From Dharmapuri, we took a right at a signed junction towards Hogenakal (OK road). Just before entering the Hogenakal forest, people took 40 + 10 bucks from us as some kind of fee. The Hogenakal forest is a nice drive with beautiful forest views and lots of monkeys as we go down to the water.

On entering Hogenakal town at around 11:30, we were met by the coracle guys. After some bargaining, we settled for a coracle to take us to the falls and a trip down the river and waiting time for bath, etc. for 400 Rs. We parked the car in the youth hostel pay and use parking and following the boatman, got into the coracle. The coracle itself was a wobbly but strong looking boat to which we got in with some acrobatics, (my mo-in-law had the toughest time :-). At this point you can view the cauvery flowing through the trees and the boulders and it presents a beautiful sight. The coracle deposits you on to an island, where you have to get out. Here we got the first views of the falls. It was magnificent, there is a small watch tower which you can climb for a panaromic view of the whole falls area. Then we climed back doen to the other end of the island, where we got back onto the coracle. Then we were taken right under the falls (a great feeling).

Let me describe the falls here to you, they are not very high and one such falls would not be a great thing, but here the cauvery leaps down over a large area creating around 15 such waterfalls which make for great scenery. Then the coracle took us down the river through a gorge onto the more calm areas where we had fresh fish caught and fried right before us! After around an hour of loitering on the river and getting under some of the falls, we went back to land.

There is a TTDC hotel which serves decent food and then we went back to the falls area to visit the Hanging bridge which serves as a viewpoint to yet more waterfalls !! This place is also famous for taking a massage and bathing in the falls here but we did not go for it.

For heading back we were told that there was a shorter and good road to Hosur but we could not find it but took another road to Hosur via Palakodu and Rayakottai which shaved off 30 kms from the journey. We started from Hogenekal at 3:30 and reached Bangalore at 7:30 .

All in all a great trip (the only minus being the bad roads in some sections)

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES ON EARTH
Sep 16, 2005 10:33 PM 10525 Views

Now, I think that explains where I have been last week. Sorry guys for staying away from Mouthshut, but I was having a trip of a lifetime. We had a college tour to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka districts… An ordinary one by all standards, but it was turned into the trip of a lifetime by this wonderful place on earth called Hogenakkal.

Popular film destination

In case you have no idea of the place… It’s very popular with the film industry… Remember the song Kareena sings in the film ‘Ashoka’. Pardon me for not remembering the song, but I remember that river and scenery, but never thought I would be going to the place…

Also as has been pointed in the comments section, the first popular song shot in the location is ''Dil Hai Chotta sa'' from the film Roja.

Location

Hogenakkal is located in the Karnataka- Tamil nadu border. Actually, one side of the river is Karnataka and the other side forms Tamil Nadu. The river that forms this majestic falls and rapids is the Cauvery.

Sudden awe

We were told that we would be visiting this place. But I had no idea what it held for us. We were sitting in the bus, chatting to a beautiful girl, when all of a sudden the huge mountains and rivers caught my attention. I could do nothing else than to stare at the beauty of the place and take pictures. But even the beauty of the western Ghats couldn’t prepare me for the rapids that lay ahead of us….

Take off your shoes… May get wet (Yeah right!!!)

That’s what we were told. Ok! Fine! We got of without our shoes and walked. There were lots of monkeys around and they seemed very friendly. We could walk up to them without irritating them, and they followed us while we walked down to the river.

Coracles… What the? I am not going into those rapids in that thing…

Actually, I had no idea what were those things they used to go into the water? I got this word from a website for writing the review. But you will be shocked… Ahead of you lies a huge river with rapids and they ask you to take a 3 hour trip in a circular coracle or whatever…

What are these coracles? Imagine circular basket boats covered in plastic or go watch the film ‘Ashoka’. These things are really a scare… It’s like 30 cms in height at the edges, and with seven persons in it, you are really so close to the roaring water, and through the plastic, you can actually feel the force of the river underneath…

The ride:

Its heaven on earth. The scenery is absolutely nothing short of stunning, with beautiful rocks, gorges, rapids, waterfalls. But then, the ride is nothing… Its just to take you from one rock to another… From these rocks, the adventure begins..

I am on top of the world…

The first rock is where the excitement really kicks off. There is a wonderful view of the falls, made even more beautiful by the fact that it can be viewed from the top of a tower. Man!!! Good thing none of my friends noticed the shaking of my legs… But then, they were also scared and excited, it seems. But its not there fault, neither mine… Standing metres above a raging waterfall can take a lot of you…

Wait! Nothings complete without a bath in those falls…

Yes, I did! It was a thrilling experience… Though we are not allowed to bath in any of the main falls, there are small falls, from the rocks, and this makes for great fun.

The only thing that is going to ruin this fun is those fishes swimming around biting you. It doesn’t hurt and the locals said that the fishes were only taking the dirt of your body… But still, it tingles a lot… Make sure you are in some tight pants and not in some shorts or Bermudas…

Boys! Time for a little fun…

Make sure you have your GF with you… This is your one chance of a lifetime to win her heart. I mean, they are sure going to enjoy the support you will be giving them… And as for you… You can hold their hands and take them safely along those rocks and rapids… Make sure you have good biceps and arm power…

I ran out of film… But help is not far off land… In the river actually

I didn’t have a digital camera and ran out of film, while in the middle o the river, and then to my rescue comes a floating shop, that too, on one of those coracles… You got to appreciate the people and their unique way of transport… Specially since they say that its been there transportation for more than a thousand years…

Cost

The ride comes at a reasonable price. It cost us 130 rupees plus 30 rupees tip for the driver (Per head). Not that expensive for what you get…

But the thing is not about the cost… I wouldn’t recommend the place for families with kids smaller than 15, and also not for old people . Its an adventure ride, and older persons and small kids would find it hard to climb up and about the rocks, and walk against the raging rapids…

But in the comments section, I came to know that even people with children enjoyed the place...

You have to experience it yourself…

I could just go on and on, but that will not be anything compared to the experience we had… it’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Need any help???

Here are a few sites to check out about the place
