HCL - All is not well with BEANSTALK
Apr 07, 2005 03:23 PM 4650 Views

I booked a Beanstalk from HCL on 21st March and the system was delivered to me after 3 to 4 days. But from the delivery date the PROBLEMS started.

The configuration is P-IV, 2.93, 256 MB Ram, 80 GB HDD with Win XP Home Media Center Edition and 15-in-1 card reader and 17'' Monitor. The problem with this system has started from Day-1. The system used to hang at all possible times and if you shut down It won't boot again. The problem persisted and the service people (from the Dealer) will come and rectify. But after 3 days the system permanantley stopped booting. The service people took it away and replace the mother board.

To top this, the monitor supplied with the system has a visible manufacturing defect and they changed the monitor to the new HCM785RFM flat monitor. The display was not to the mark. The Horizontal lines were not even and the the Vertical edges of the display was deviated.

The service people from HCL who came for inspection told me that these monitors will be like this. To quote the Sevice Engineer : '' IF you buy monitors for 5000 to 6000 rupees they will be like this only''. I asked him why on the outside the Monitor box the rated was indicated as Rs. 11500.00? He said that it is nothing to do with the actual monitor rate and refused to accept the defect in the monitor and left my place leaving the Monitor as it is.

I would also request others to read the review given in DIGIT April Edition regarding the Monitors especially the HCM 785RFM monitors.

Buyers beware...you will learn a costly lesson by spending Rs.42,000

Bangalore India
HCL is the BEST

Am working in IT form as Sr. Manager (Offshore in-charge). When my company decided to expand the operations in Bangalore, We have done the enormous study on PC branded company?s like IBM, HP, HCL, DELL etc.

The priority point to consider on any brand before make any purchase, not only the product range, it should also talks about SERVICE/SUPPORT which we will get after purchase. As per my experience towards HCL, they are the No.1 in terms of cost and support.

Marketing strategy of HCL is always good and excellent. Good behavior with customers with good manners. I never received ?NO?/?NOT POSSIBLE? from HCL while I was interacting them. I too respect all the people from various vendors. Everyone want to have the business with customers. With HCL, I personally felt, they never work for money, they work for customer.

I had experience to listen comments from other brand people on HCL products, But as a customer we always encourage the comments on local strength of the product rather keep other products in bad remarks.

HCL Media Center-More bang for your bucks!!
Apr 15, 2004 07:13 PM 5678 Views

After researching the various models/companies selling branded pc's in the Indian market shortlisted HCL Beanstalk....Then the dealer revealed the best kept secret in the pc market..An HCL Media Center PC at an unbeliveable and unadvertised price...These usually went at +60K..But after removing some frills (unwanted for a regular user) a model was available for 43K's !!

The configuration::

P4 with 2.4 GHz (More than most people need)

17' monitor

256MB RAM

DVD ROM (got it replaced by a CD-RW as I already have a dvd player)

40GB Harddisk

GE Force FX 5200 AGP card with TV out

Happauge TV Tuner card

Window XP Media Center Edition

ATP3 Altec Lansing Speakers (Cool tall speakers!!)

It came loaded with Norton antivirus and the dealer was kind enough to load all other required softwares (pirated) and threw in a headphone cum mic.

The cabinet is cool black with silver lining.

The HCL monitor delivers great picture clarity and the graphics card runs all the media intensive applications and 3D graphic intensive games with great aplomb.

Media Center means that this can be used as a TV and one is able to record programs (after connecting the cable cord) at pre defined timings.FM stations can be tuned to play crystal clear music on the fabulous Altec Lansing speakers.

Also one can pause and play live TV !!

Comes with a chunky remote.(for the couch aloos!)

You can play your favourite TV show in a small window while working furiously on your office power point presentation at the same time or using the pc for some other work.

All in all a complete media center for your home at affordable price and would be great as a second TV as well....And yes it comes with 1 year onsite warranty and the service is not bad at all .

Giant on top of the beanstalk

Last December I walked into a HCL roadshow in Coimbatore and instantly fell in love with the HCL beanstalk Silver-Black model with 2.4 GHz P4 and all the bells and whistles anyone'd expect from HCL (Yes I owned 2 computers both HCL busybees).

Finally it happened I got it and still have it.Of course its only a couple of months and within waranty period too but I had to format the HDD atleast 8 times till date but I must say after installing fresh softwares its really giving me mindblowing performance. Even as i'm writing this my ears are filled with 1500W of Thunderous music and watching B4u sideby side only at 34% CPU usage...

I really recommend HCL for any branded/unbranded computers!

What i saw was not what i got

I am a pass out from NIFT, delhi and have had a close interface with fashion, colour and graphics.

it was a foreplay of these elements which was compounded by computers. I attended a workshop by INTEL at ANSAL PLAZA, DELHI where HCL Beanstalk was inaugrated. they had a software ejay installed and featured on the desktop. it was nice making movies and composing music. it was quite an experience. believe u me, it was just out of the world.

but once we bouhgt the machine, the look of the desktop was different from the normal windows. too much of segregations, which meant that everytime u log on and go to ur own section. if u wanted to access a non-common file u have to relog as another user.

talking so much about NIFT, I use at least half a dozen softwares (mostly graphics) at a time, and most of them are heavy softwares.

the goddamned machine worked fine for a while, but within the first week started showing signs of pregnancy!

it started hanging up the moment I opened more than a two softwares at the same. so much for 40 GB of hard disk and a mind boggling 1.5 Ghz speed.

why is this happening is still not known to me, but I guess a computer is as good as it behaves. having used more than 50 computers till date, this was the best that I had come across and also the biggest disappointment.

i don't know whether to recommend it or not.

a big name, a bigger showdown! an assembled comp would do much better only if the user had gumption enough to handle it. HCL or no, hang ups are here to stay I guess.
