Gulf Air Reviews

Kolkata India
Its not that bad!
Feb 23, 2006 10:49 AM 5343 Views

I have been reading some of the negative reviews on the airline, but based on my experience,I would rate it to be one of the better airlines in the middle east.

I have flown Gulf Air on numerous occasions in the India- Muscat-Dubai-Bahrain sectors and my experiences have been more or less pleasant.

The aircrafts are new and spacious, the interiors are clean, some of the sectors have personal video screens on all classes. They have multi linguistic cabin crew from various nationalities, though I wont rate them very high on friendliness or passenger handling. The crew lack a smile on the face and are not too responsive to passenger issues. The cabin is a bit noisy during take off and landing, somehow the overhead bins even in the business class seem to rattle at times.

The food served is quite good and variety is available.

I have a Gulf Air frequent flyer membership and on almost 90% of the occasions I have been upgraded to Business Class and believe me their business class is one of the best I have ever flown. Some of the sectors offer full flat sky beds, which is an ultimate in luxury.

The inflight entertainment is decent enough though it does not offer a wide variety of choice.

All inflight announcements are first made in Arabic, followed by English.

The flights are also pretty much on time, I cant recollect an incidence where my flight was delayed beyond 15 mins.

Ground staff is pretty helpful and polite.

WORST YOU CAN FLY TO GULF
Feb 14, 2006 05:07 PM 4803 Views

GULF AIR IS THE WORST AIRLINE YOUCAN TRAVEL SPEACIAL THE ECONOMY CLASS AND TO THE INDIAN SECTOR .

THE AIRCRAFTS ARE CRAPPY AND MOST OF THE SEATS HAVE BROKEN AND REPAIRED INTERIORS MADE OF PLASTIC A ND UGLY REPAIRING DONE WITH SOME KIND OF GLUE THE SEATS FITTING HAVE DIRTY INTERIORS AND BLACK DIRT STUCK IN ALL CORNERS .

THE AIRHOSTESS NEVER SMILE AND ARE A PAIN TO WATCH AND ASK FOR ANY SERVICE . THEY DEAL AS IF THEY ARE DOING A BIG BIG FAVOUR BY SERVING US INDIANS. WHILE THEY FORGET THAT THERE SALRIES ARE BEING PAID BY OUR MONEY.

GULF AIR IS TAKING AND EXPLOITING THE PRIVELEGE OF GOOD TIME SLOTS TO THE FULLEST.

ALL IN ALL ITS TEH WORST

Aussie says Gulf Air is Great!

Hello all, as I said above Gulf Air flight from Sydney to London (via Singapore and Bahrain) was fantastic.

I found the in flight service and entertainment to be top-notch, certainly better than anything you get on Jet Star, Virgin and Qantas, and the in-flightentertainment is pretty good too.

The only complaint I would have is the lack of leg room, but if you book an aisle set you can stretch out pretty well. The two stops, at Singapore and Bahrain. At Bahrain, make use of the 4 hour stop by having a shower - towel and toiletries provided and it wwill cost you 2 BHD (around 8 AUD). It's well worth it and will help you kill an hour or so.

Give them a go - great service, usual legroom problems in economy but entertainment, 2 stops and constant food and drink offerings will see you in London before you know it.

I had a round trip flight from Bahrain to Dubai this last weekend (July 27-29). The Bahrain-to-Dubai flight was supposed to depart at 17:05 (flight # GF504). The flight was 1H40M late; not even an apology was given. The plane was dirty with ashtry covers removed.

Coming back from Dubai (July 29th; GF565); the airplane was supposed to depart at 18:25; the flight was 5H35M late!!! Gulf Air was so complacement and insensetive to the feeling of the passengers; they even refused to allow the exesberated passengers into their Business Class Lounge; only after many passengers made a scene at the airport that the Gulf Air reps finally allowed the tired, hungry and angry passengers into the lounge (after 3 hours wait); when the airplane finally departed at mid-night, there was only 2-seconds routine apology from the the stewardess.

I WILL NEVER EVER FLIGHT GULF AIR AS LONG AS I LIVE................................That was a double wamy horrible experience..

First and Last..never again!
Jul 16, 2005 08:45 PM 4262 Views

I travelled with Gulf air from Germany to India via Muscat/Oman and was probably the most exasperating flight journeys I have ever had. Firstly, Even after arriving 2 and half hours before check in time and only 5 kgs excess baggage, the check in crew at Frankfurt made me feel like a piece of chit. They asked me RUDELY to go back and remove all the stuff. I had removed 4 and again she wouldnt let me in. She asked me to go back for one kg again. By the time I came back waiting in the queue for long, they closed the check in counter and said check in done! I will not be able to board. Infact all gulf staff refused to even listen and left the counters. I made noise and refused to move out of the place as long as they let me in. Finally the manager who came looking for what was hapning found some pity and was nice to let me in.

The flight then did not take off and had to wait for 45 minutes due to engine failure. Wasnt that a delay! as if only mine was..!

Next the cabin crew were equally bad. Specially after the flight landed in Bahrain and Muscat. From Muscat to India was the worst. The airhostess and staff were irritatable. They were shouting treating all in economy as one. It is understandable that most menial laboureres travel in the sector. But that does not definitely say that all passengers be treated menially! Was the first and last. I also lodged a compliant. Dont ever travel.

I would rather WALK than fly economy gulf air
May 22, 2005 02:12 PM 4219 Views

I have travelled on gulf air in economy class many times, too many times actually. if one is planning to travel in economy, in the indian sector, think again PLEASE!!!

-i f you u are travelling to/from india you will get the feeling that u are treated like a bunch of goats/livestock, packed together on a noisy, uncomfrtable aircraft.

-air hostesses are unbelievably rude (and unattractive) towards asians.

-food looks like leftovers from an even worse airline (if an even worse airline is in existence) + after eating the food, my whole family experienced stomach-aches.

-toilets stink and are <always> occupied

-seats are cramped, your backside literally is <glued> to the hand rest, (and I am only 5'8' /70kg).

the only positive thing I have to about gulf air is that the business class is almost a completely different experience from the horrors of economy- shows how different people treat you when they know how fat your wallet is.

Mumbai & Muscat India & Oman
Plight of Indian on Gulf Air Flight
Feb 21, 2004 10:07 AM 17660 Views

~Ordeals of Gulf Bound Indian Passenger in Gulf Air is horrendous and insulting experience. If you have a choice of purchasing your own ticket I suggest you to travel by any other airline.

~I am traveling Gulf Air last 13 years since 1991, because there is no choice for me. My company provides us ticket of Gulf air. I travel once to Muscat every 3 months & have traveled to Mct countless times.

~I also have a Frequent Flyer Card of Gulf Air since last 7 yrs but besides permitting 10 kg more in your baggage it hasn't provided me any other benefits. Many times even if they have vacant seats in Business class there is no courtesy to upgrade from economy to business class to accommodate more economy class passengers.

~In Mumbai airport behavior of their ground staff is rude & disgusting. They don't guide passenger properly and never talk in polite manner (except some Parsi ground staff).

~One must admit that approx 90% of the Gulf bound passengers are from labor/employee class, n less educated. Ground staff and cabin crew must understand this point & should explain required formalities.

~Once you pass through the immigration the real ordeal begins. My heart starts beating faster as I approach Gulf Air aircraft. I see it from the glass wall n sometimes miss my heartbeat. This time I fondly think of travelling by good old ST to Malwan with smiling, ever willing conductor, & helpful, caring drivers.

~When you enter the aircraft the hostess greets you as she is merely conducting her duties as a formality, the smile, hospitality is totally absent from her face. This always reminds me of my PT Sir who used to stand at the entrance of the RVT high school. If a student came a minute late he used to give five lashes on students palm so hard, that till recess our palm used to pain & inflame. Many times when I used to be late n seen him at gate, mostly I used to do a 'Peecheyy Mood' (about turn) & used to pass my entire day in Rotary park, Khar danda, Juhu chowpaty wandering penniless learning from experience outside the school.

~At the entrance they have newspapers, which is appreciable but those all are in Arabic language like Al Watan, Akhbar Khalijee, Sada Shabiba. I proceed to my seat n try to scroll through pages of inflight magazines which contain valuable information about Two days in Istambool, 'Guide to Paris Hotels' Arabic cookery page 'Laham Ahmar, Mishkak Filfill, Digak Shorba, etc. I often wonder in these Gulf-India flights why they do not provide Indian Magazines or Ind Newspapers. I console myself, forget it, it is just a matter of couple of hours.

~Next comes another hostess with a tray in her hand containing Paper Napkin, & sugar boiled toffees. Hurry, take it as fast as you can because you blink your eyes and she is gone, she?ll never come back with that tray again.

In business class they provide wet steamed napkin for elite people who come from star hotels in A/C cars, check in within seconds in business class check in counters which has 2 meter of Red carpet in front. In Labor class err sorry 'Economy class' they provide paper napkin drenched in alcoholic perfume, by mistake if you wipe you eyes then your eyes are bound to get irritation. Knowing this, before entering aircraft I often go to Mumbai Airport Toilet which are clean and well maintained. I go to W/C, relieve myself and wash my face. This costs you some in tip but this is better idea than using cramped toilet in aircraft where it's been used by someone before you who might've gone their first time and didn't understood the signs / instructions written in English.

~Now a days there is welcome move in Gulf Air is that they show Hindi Movies in flights which is our weakness, they know it. Once the passenger is engrossed in Hindi feature film he will not bother any in-flight service staff. They show only half of the movie in Mum-Mct sector. Aagey aapke ghar main jaake dekhiye!!

My most important grievance about Gulf air is rude behaviour of their cabin crew, and I do not hesitate to say that 80% of 'Indian Air hostesses' are most arrogant, egoistic, rude, and non-courteous and behaves in non-polite with Indian passengers. Surprisingly they behave very polished manner n politely with the European, Arab or Eastern passengers.

~Non-Indian (europian, arabic) Air hostesses are OK and hospitable.

Egyptian (?) Arabic Male Flight Pursers are very rude, egocentric, arrogant and big headed. They will never comply with your petty requests. I think they do not have politeness or hospitality words in their dictionary. They will always hesitate to serve you hard drinks and beer, after repeated requests only they will give the drink that too just once (ekach pyala).

~Next comes a very dreadful, horrendous experience called 'In-flight Meals'!! The food is so awful, tasteless, and unpleasant that even if you remember it, you are bound to loose your appetite for hours. It is served with an attitude, which matches with quality of the food.

~Firstly its Quantity is less, as it is served in miniature tray. Two teaspoon vegetable n non veg and some rice in a tiny tray, secondly it is of low quality. At any given time I will rank our own delicious 'Pav-Bhajee' available on Mumbai pavements much higher than these inflight meals.

~If one ask an extra piece of bread simply she says 'Not now, wait for some time' and will never turn up. These services are done with intention that all the pax are on their mercy for the drinks & food.

~Many a times veg food is over even before half of the passengers are covered. One of my friend informed at the time of confirming ticket that he wants only veg meal, GF agreed, but when he boarded Delhi-Muscat flight veg food was never served to him. Above all the hostess asked him, 'Sir veg food is over, can you eat chicken?' He had to alight at Muscat empty stomach. (If anyone wants his name, flight no, date, FFC no, we will gladly give it).

~On two occasions I did not get my baggage when I got down in Mumbai. (Mct-Mum flight) Once it came after 4 hours in next GF flight. Another time when my baggage didn?t come GF ground staff told about 20 of us passengers to come next day to collect it. I went to Kalyan by Taxi, stayed one day n came back next midnight. Two days of my leave were wasted in claiming baggage & I had to face unfriendly custom officials twice for one trip.

~I asked about general opinion about GF flight to Indian friends in my drilling company they all said that it is Greatly Faltoo, Generally Fateechar and if given a choice they will never travel by Gulf air.

~I sometimes have traveled by Air India, and have very pleasant experience. Flight Pursers are usually helpful, polite n friendly in nature. Most of the AI aiir hostesses are also polite, well mannered, courteous and hospitable.

~I travel by Gulf Air just because our company provides us ticket and most of the time the flights run at the time which suits us. I have to travel to and fro to attend my duties and have to do it by any means. I tolerate atrocities of Gulf Air Crew thinking of the plight of millions of passengers who travel everyday in Ambernath 12 dabba Fast, 5.26 Virar bada fast, Karjat double fast, Borivali fast etc. They also have to suffer. There is just one difference- they suffer it physically and Gulf Indian laborer traveling by Gulf air suffer mentally facing insult, racial discrimination, rudeness and disrespect.

Gulf Air-- One Sucky Airline
Feb 05, 2004 02:32 PM 4086 Views

Gulf Air is an excuse for an airline and over the years the service has completely degenerated. Recently, I travelled from Mumbai to Muscat and back. Here's what was bad about the flight:

  • The food was BAD. I love food but I couldn't stomach a morsel. The paratha was hard as a rock, the curry was insipid and the sweet was tastless. Post-flight I suffered from a bout of severe colic. I couldn't sleep the entire night. So, if you travel Gulf Air, make sure you have a good meal before your board the flight, or else you might lose your appetite for a couple of days.

  • The airhostess was really rude and snooty. I requested for a non-veg meal, but when the meal arrived it looked vegetarian. When I confirmed with the air hostess, she took a look at it, confirmed very rudely that the putrid mess was non-veg and glared at me very angrily, then she stormed off down the aisle.

  • The only plus point was that the flight was on time, but I don't know if that's a norm or just the exception.

Bad service, bad food...BEWARE of GULF AIR!

Frankfurt Germany
Great airline
Aug 13, 2003 10:28 PM 4206 Views

I loved travelling with Gulf Air....I flew from Bombay to Frankfurt and the only ''problem'' was the stop in Bahrain/Muscat, because it is rather boring to wait at an airport in the middle of the night for a connecting flight....

But Gulf Air were the cheapest airline and they had the best food I ever had on a flight. The aircrafts were very modern and clean....the famous Lufthansa which is always said to be one of the best airlines of the world cannot compete at all here as they are more expensive, less clean, less modern and the food is always horrible.....The personnel of Gulf Air was very helpful and friendly and they had a good tv/radio programme, so you didn't get too bored...

I flew economy class and you have quite enough space to sit and the seats are quite comfortable (if one can speak of comfortable at all after such a long flight when ever single bone hurts!!). The flights were also in time always...although I have heard from other ppl that they had a few problems here....

I would always fly with Gulf Air again although I would prefer a direct flight to India/Frankfurt.

Gulf air is an average airlines and has still a lot of improvement.i have flown by first class and economy and dont find much difference in them.

the flights are sometimes on time and are mostly late.the planes a few of them are very old and have a lot of technical problem.

the flights are not as good as singapore airlines british airways etc.

the ground staff is good at some airports in all I can say that for a short trip to the gulf this is a good option but for longer journeys I wouldnot reccomend it.

Never Ever fly with Gulf
Jan 27, 2003 03:35 PM 3259 Views

I traveled from Frankfurt-Trivandrum-Frankfurt by Gulf Air.First of all the flight attendants treat you as criminals taken to jail by their flight. No proper cordial replies at all.The flights are very old and has technical troubles by which the flight was delayed by 2 hrs after boarding at Bahrain. And there are some british ladies as crews in the Bahrain Trivandrum sector of Gulf Air who should be prosecuted for racial abuse. They are still in pre-independence era.And the worst part was yet to come.On my return as I came to transfer desk ''The Arab '' guy in the desk says that Gulf air has rescheduled the flights and I have to stay in Bahrain for 36 hrs(The Staff of Gulf Air at Trivandrum said ''both the flights are confirmed'')..I request for an alternative as I had to join back on duty. Then I got the most polite answer from the brother of ''A'' that I better find a new job. Then was harassment for 15-20 min.I fully support the idea of sending the staff at Bahrain to some schools so that they learn how to behave to another human being.

To summarise ,please be reminded when ever you decide to fly by Gulf Air,you pay for getting kicked around and harassed.

The only time I traveled by Gulf Air was during December 1997- January 1998. I've heard bad stuff about its service and quality, all of which I failed to see during my trip. In reality, I got great service and they even provided very good hotel accommodation while I was in Bahrain for a half a day. That's better than most airlines. I was traveling with a friend and we requested and got the best seats in the house. That is, we got the spacious seats next to the emergency exits. And the food was very good.

The only con with Gulf Air may be sticking to its flight schedule. But I wasn't in much of a hurry. I had shopping to do at the airport.

SYMBOL OF HOSPITALITY.
Jul 24, 2001 07:36 PM 8381 Views

When I went to Dubai to work in 1993,I travelled by Gulf Air.Little did I know that I would be travelling the Gulf by this airline most of the time. The thing is I had gone there on a visit visa and stayed for 3 months before I could get myself a decent job.As a result I had to go out of the emirate for a visa change.I will tell you for an ill informed traveller like me the officials were very courteous and very helpful.I mean they guided me through all the formalities. The worst part was I was travelling on the routing flights which would take me from Bombay-Muscat-Fujairah.Now the Bombay-Muscat leg was completed in the night itself and I had to put up at the Muscat airport for the night and the flight to Fujairah was to take off only the next morning. These people had the courtesy to assure me that I could sleep without any hassle as they will not take off without me as that was precisely what I was scared about.A few months later when I had to go out to Doha for my visa change I was given a Gulf Air ticket by my parents again.I was very disappointed to find a smelling toilet in the plane. After I finished my formalities and returned back to Dubai I wrote a letter to the concerned authorities about the pathetic condition of the loo.Imagine my surprise when I received a prompt reply from the head office of Gulf Air in Bahrain.I was really surprised to get such speedy feedback.I cannot say much about the food though.Maybe it is becuse I was travelling by the economy class. On the whole I felt that it was a nice airline. Now I do not know whether the quality has improved or gone down. The staff is very friendly and courteous.Check-in is also very speedy.I would safely recommend this airline if you wish to have a no hassles trip.Take off and landing is as usual always on time as they pride themselves on their punctuality. That is another remarkable aspect that I like about this airline.

Gulf Air, no way!
Jun 10, 2001 12:51 PM 3593 Views

I had a couple of bad experiences in the Gulf Air and I detest it!The flight attendants were not courteous and busy talking among themselves, the food was horrible and the drinks were served after the meal and so hardly anybody had them! When you ask them for something they act as if they have'nt heard you and when you repeat they say,''WAAAAAIIIIIITTTT''. I prefer Air India to Gulf air to travel from UAE to India. I found the ground staff better than the in-flight attendants.

Gulf's one of the better airlines
Mar 31, 2001 09:47 AM 15967 Views

I have read some negative sounding reviews concerning Gulf Air. I have flown Gulf Air and Emirates Airlines several times on the Europe-Bombay sector. Each of these airlines makes a stop either in Bahrain or Dubai in connecting to Bombay. As an airline they are pretty good. Their hospitality and quality of food (esp. for someone with a taste for desi cuisine) is awesome - compared to the european airlines that never tire of serving boiled string beans with no salt or flavor. The other airlines that serve decent food are our desi Air India and PIA - where everything else is 3rd-world-class. The toilets stink, the air in the cabin smells, the plane is 240 years old and seats are torn and the flight attendants are poorly trained, at best. So in a sense, I find Gulf air of the breed of airlines that has the proverbial best of both worlds. Most of their planes are pretty new and very well maintained.

Having said that - the trauma arises on the stop in the middle-east. I know desi crowd is treated like 3rd class there. In the minds of airport officials at Dubia and Bahrain - all brown-skinned people are jamadar or labor class. Not that there is any shame in being labor class - but this group tends to equate desi laborers as sub-humans. And dealing with them at the airports is a huge huge test of your patience if you have a conscience.

Anyhoo, I tend to hold my american passport with the big eagle high up so they will salute me. That makes the experience quite bearable.

I was on my business trip to USA and Germany with my Father. We had to take 5 days break in Germany while coming back to India because we had to attend an exhibition over there.I don't know why but we thought of giving this airline a try.We boarded from mumbai on 4th may,2000.The flight was so small and there was very little space to move. The worst part of the airline was that they had around two breaks between London and Mumbai and one break was around 2 hours and the other was around 4 hours..That was really boring part of my journey.Food served in the airline was also not that good according to international status of airlines.

I like one thing about airlines that they had two camara's which was showing front view from the airplane and the another view was from down side. so you can see the plane landing and also front scene and I have never seen such facility in any other airlines.Music in most of the channel was in arab but few channel had music in hindi and english and people can play games online that was a good facility.

Over all not that good experience.

I remember taking a SwissAir flight from Mumbai to New York via Zurich. This was some years ago. My memory of the flight always brings very pleasant feeling.

From the ground to the air we received a very warm welcome and personal attention. The Air Hostess were very cheerful and took proper care of the passengers. I remember that on returning back to Mumbai the first thing I did was to send an appreciation letter to Swissair office.

Swissair flights are quite safe and the cabin attention is meticulous. However this was what I experience many years ago. I am not sure what is the situation today. But I hope it would be as good or better.

WORST WAY TO TRAVEL GULFWARDS
Nov 18, 2000 01:21 PM 2351 Views

I am a UAE resident travelled recently from Dubai to Bahrain to Bombay... I think I could have been better on a camel ! The airline is pathetic and the crew has such an attitude ! They treat all passengers as if they are doing them a favour. Even plain simple drinking water is offered with not so much as a smile. The food quality is attrocious. The toilets aren't cleaned periodically. The crew is busy in their own private jokes.

I will never fly Gulfair again.

Okay can't help but writing about Gulf Air...What a pathetic Airline..Whilst en route back home to England I came across a few misconceptions....If I can remember correctly it was about two months back. I checked in at the desk and luckily with a bit of flirtatious behaviour I got myself up graded that also too business class...Felt quite sorry for the flyers in economy though..They were so crampped together that there was hardly room to maneuver.Okay so all thats running smoothly any ways for me, till the flight stops over in Bahrain...Which was like a time staking seven hours..You tell me what on earth is one supposed to do...''Catch flies'' hahah..Any way Duty Free is pretty small..You can probably go round the place twice and then finally get bored...If not lost...And its not like there are many people you can talk to either..It's like speaking chinese to an Arab....Any ways setting all that a side..We boarded the flight again a good six and half hours later..Warm drinks were served with god knows what kind of food....If you asked for something on the menu something else would turn up.Bon apetite..to that any way....

What bugged me the most on the way from Bahrain was the air stewards...Male ones in particular...They would start chatting up any one...How cheap can it get...They are suppoed to be professional at what they are doing. And under rules and regulations they are not to do such things..It could cost them their jobs.....To cut a long story short I was seriously relieved to be on British soil..Heathrow Airport to be exact....
