..::: Feeling the romance of Notting Hill :::..
Apr 05, 2007 11:03 AM 1975 Views

About Nature: From our earliest hour we have been taught that the thought of the heart, the shaping of the rain-cloud, the amount of wool that grows on a sheep's back, the length of a drought, and the growing of the corn, depend on nothing that moves immutable, at the heart of all things; but on the changeable will of a changeable being, whom our prayers can alter. To us, from the beginning, Nature has been but a poor plastic thing, to be toyed with this way or that, as man happens to please his deity or not; to go to church or not; to say his prayers right or not; to travel on a Sunday or not. Was it possible for us in an instant to see Nature as she is -the flowing vestment of an unchanging reality?

Beautiful City: Yes, you heard it right. I am feeling the romance of Notting Hill here in Guildford but hey don’t get me wrong I do not have any companion here but it’s just the weather and beauty of this place which compels me to feel so. The place is very calm, buildings are traditional and beautiful and there’s not much crowd in the city except the town center. I’m accustomed with the living style of India and of course my body understands the language of Indian climate. When I came out of India, initially it was tough for me to transform myself in a new environment but thanks to this lovely city Guildford which helped me to accept this cool and romantic Atlantic waves. Generally the summers of surrey is more beautiful and pleasant but I arrived in winters and still enjoying it’s beauty.

My Stay: I’m staying in Travelodge which is near to Surrey University Campus and Business Center and the Town Center of Guildford is just 20 minutes walk from here. It’s comparatively a small city so you can get the feel of this city in just few days. After knowing this city you can easily decide where to spend your weekends, from where to do shopping and where to go for entertainment.

Connectivity: The connectivity of Guildford from London and other parts of UK is also very nice. London Waterloo station is around 40 minutes by train from Guildford station and London Heathrow Airport is around 30 minutes by road from Guildford Town Center. A3 connect Guildford from London and there are other connecting roads also from other parts of UK.

Superstores and Food malls: There is a Tesko super store near to Surrey medical hospital and Welcome super store you can find everywhere in Guildford. The Town Center of Guildford has lots of shopping complexes with various products. There is a huge Marks & Spencer show room as well in Town Center.  In food you can find everything here. Starting from Italian, Thai, Chinese, Indian, French, Sea Food, Pizza, Burgers or any other food you need. Major food malls available here are Pizza Hut, Burger King, Dominos, Subway and lots more.

Tourism:

St James Church, Sir Edmund Lutyens, the great British Architect, work can be seen on the iron gates and war memorial.

The Guildhall: The Guildhall is a 16th and 17th century building of great historic interest. It used to be a courtroom and council chamber. The ground floor is of Tudor origin. The building houses civic plate, including many rare items. The Classical front of the building is dominated by a magnificent bracket clock made in 1683.

Abbot's Hospital: Abbot's Hospital in Guildford High Street is also known as the Hospital of the Blessed Trinity. It was built in 1619 by the Archbishop of Canterbury George Abbot. He built the Hospital "out of love to the place of my birth". There was to be accommodation for twelve Brothers and eight Sisters, aged over sixty, unmarried and resident in Guildford for twenty years or more. The building resembles one of the contemporary Oxford and Cambridge Colleges - a quadrangle with staircases leading to the individual rooms. It is one of the finest examples of Tudor brickwork in the country. There is a common room and a chapel with Flemish pictoral glass in the windows. The gatehouse with its ogee-domed turrets and the shaped gables of the cross-wings are typical of'Tudor' brick building.

Castle Street:The imposing stone tower keep of Guildford Castle was the subject of major conservation work in 2003.  Major discoveries were made including the fact that the keep was originally lower in height. Following these developments the first floor reception chamber has been re-floored and roofed for the first time in centuries allowing a permanent exhibition to be displayed inside. The Tower contains a model of the original castle c 1300 CE and interpretation panels tracing the Tower's history to the present day.The Castle Grounds, a riot of spectacular floral colour, are open all year round.

Castle Arch, Quarry Street:Guildford Museum is a beautiful 17th century building adjacent to the castle grounds. The archaeology galleries show the development of life in Surrey from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. The local history gallery displays the crafts and industries of Guildford and there is a fine collection of needlework. Special exhibitions and events run throughout the year and there is an art corner for children.

Guildford Cathedral: Guildford Cathedral dominates the town from its imposing position on Stag Hill. Consecrated in 1961 it was designed by Edward Maufe and is floodlit to spectacular effect at night. Most of all it deserves to be viewed from the inside where the honey colored stone and marble floors combine with soaring arches giving an impression of lightness, space and tranquility. From its commanding hilltop position, Guildford Cathedral, on Stag Hill, is an imposing landmark. From road and rail by day, and by night, when it is floodlit, its modern splendour can be admired from miles around. Inside there is tranquility and peace and an overall impression of dignity, beauty, lightness and space, created by the interior of pale Somerset sandstone and white Italian marble floors.

There are lots of other nice places to see. If you go to countryside, you will find the place you have seen in the movie “The Holiday”.
