Being a student currently pursing mba in healthcare management from GIM, I can say that GIM is everything what it portrays on its website .

The HCM programme is an excellent programme from its placement activities to its course curriculum. The faculty does not focus on using theoretical knowledge in practice.

I am not a big fan of this institution but still I would say that they are charging very less compared to other management institutes in Goa. I have there and have seen their building but I dont like their building, its too old building and 80% of their students are boys which is quite good for those who want to study.

They offers you hotel management, hospality management, plumber, electrical, etc,

If you are intreasted then you must go for this institution but be careful of fees they charge you as per your parents salary or your cast like OBC ST SC etc,

Particularly good in Systems and Marketing. Nice library. Good IT back bone. Wi-Fi enabled. Needs to be strong in operations area. I can’t comment on HR as I am not well acquainted with the subject and the fac. Marketing has some really good faculty. But brand management course needs to be better communicated to the students which is at times perceived to be a lot of English

Ghettoism in groupism, but a congenial place to enrich yourself if you have a personal sense of rational initiative.

Nice place to study. A congenial atmosphere you could say. Placement cell needs to rethink its policies and focus on the main events such as the finals and summers in instead of mindless ego massaging talks with dignitaries who get an excuse to vacation in Goa. .

The SAC needs to cut down on General body meetings which I personally think is a platform for mindless yelling, posturing and unnecessary politics. In my time, it was a platform to jointly compose a message to bapu (Founder, Fr D’souza’) and much of mindless yelling, posturing and unnecessary politics.

Presently GIM has changed quite a bit, with new classrooms coming up, average placement salary has doubled, and smarter individualistic students have made their way in. Future promises to be good.

GIM is one of the fastest growing schools in India with an increasingly respected brand name which does not rely on B school polls and ranking. It needs to maintain this stance.

One last word. During the course of academic tenure, a student is expected to run several live short-term projects for almost all the courses. While, several student groups have been able to secure the projects through personal contacts, much of the batch has to cold call on companies based in goa. Rarely does any group from GIM submit a copy of its research to the patron organization. Now it is not surprising that many groups are denied projects in organizations that have had the taste of earlier batches.

Now again, GIM preaches networking to be of the utmost value. While, the talks and the placement present GIM nicely to external (outside Goa) companies, perhaps it is time for the students to realize a tad of plain courtesy and a bit of commonsense and be more amiable towards the companies which help them in the course of their education while at Goa.

MBA in Goa!- A business-cum-pleasure trip
Mar 02, 2005 12:46 PM 13089 Views

Guys,

I am an ex-GIM-ite (How does that sound? :)) of 2001-03 batch, now working in Delhi. I am taking liberty to review this institute here even though I am not exactly well tuned with its momentary scheme of things.

GIM is not a place where people usually come out of choice. Most people who land up here are those who have scored pretty well in CAT/XAT and have had Interview calls from IIMs and other top tier institutes, but somehow, have not been fortunate enough to convert them. Having said that, this very fact assures the selection of some of the most innovative minds to GIM.

Overall, with the booming economy, the enhanced status of GIM with XAT, its growing experience as an institute and recent trends of sustained but scaleable placements should make it an easy choice if you?ve missed out on IIMs, IITs, XLRI, XIM, FMS, IIFT, MDI, IMT, NMIMS, JBIMS, NITIE and MICA. (Seems like u've missed out on a lot of things!:)).

But anyway, when faced with a choice among colleges such as TAPMI, Punjab University, GIM, Nirma Institute, ICFAI, Amity and all other me-toos, I think I wouldn?t think twice before opting for GIM.

Some people also like to consider skipping the call and working for another year and then taking a second shot at IIMs-this is a high risk-high gain approach (Admission to GIM becomes tougher every year and this is explained convincingly by the ever-improving student profiles every year). Also, I would say that though the IIM-Tag is powerful, in the long run, it?s the quality of work you do that crafts your growth.

Another point one may want to consider before joining GIM is that people with upto 2 years of experience can make the most out of this course-The kind of salaries one gets when placed here is generally not higher than an engineering graduate?s salary after 4 years.

If you just try and psychoanalyze a GIMite, you can?t help but wonder what drives people from places like Delhi, Bombay, and Bangalore to come all the way to Goa to pursue the most important course of their lives.(But some of us who thought Gim was a 2 year vacation, may wanna pursue another MBA!).

There is something peculiar about the faculty, students and culture at GIM.The faculty ofcourse is among the best you would find in the country, the students-influenced by the faculty and the culture have a very proactive, positive and anti-negative approach to life- a belief stemming out of the knowledge of one?s potential and still knowing that there?s a long way to go. But the most intriguing part is the culture.

GIM is not a place where you hang your boots at the end of the day and just crash! It?s more the sort of a place where, after a long day?s(and night?s) work, you decide at 4am that Cafe Titos at Baga beach,22 km from the college would be a good place to have your morning coffee?and then , you are flying away to glory on your bikes!

The ?Work hard, play harder? attitude augurs well for most GIM-ites. I think most of my batchmates would agree that in the long run, the exposure to varied environments coupled with humility and grit is what?ll contribute to an interesting career profile.

And then, Goa is such a blissful place! The tourism industry there should pay royalty to GIM every year for creating its numerous repeat customers!

A good career choice
Feb 19, 2005 05:13 PM 10679 Views

Well , let me be honest with you , this is not going be a the same old glossy review about a business school. And yeah it is not that I have done something so great in my corporate life so that everybody shall be looking at my alma mater and me !!YET , the only object with which I start writing about my institute is to talk about the EXPERIENCE of learning provided by it.

As a fairly average student ( an engineer with 1 years of manufacturing experience when I joined this institute) , I believe to share some of my learning here ( after two years of working in a reputed investment banking firm ) shall be useful to any B-school aspirants???.. who might be considering various options for pursuing their MBA

Before we talk about the specifics , let me make my view clear that when u are looking to study post your graduation especially in the field of business administration almost all the B-schools have a limited role to play rather than being a facilitator providing the RIGHT ATMOSPHERE to move ahead.

A B-school education is not about LEARNING ANY HARD CORE sciences ???.. rather it is a program that MAKES YOU PLAY EVERY & ANY BALL from any position as a GOOD BATSMAN. The objective of a program is to create leaders with common sense and ability to respond any complex situation in the best possible manner.

No, I am not defying the role of specializations in PGDM courses , but the primary object I believe for a B-school, is to make you smart to tackle the challenges in business arena and create leader managers of the same. I shall be viewing my two years of life in GIM from this perspective. The objective again is not comparison across the B-schools ( that the admission aspirants shall decide ). Every school has a unique identity and a unique value driver that produces the end products. Here I would like to present a fair view of my institute.

~I consider this institute as good primarily because it has transformed my life ( along with 100 others in my batch ) to a large extent. This is not in absolute terms ( frankly I am not at a very high level of management or such as my counterparts passing from IIMs and nor drawing amazing salaries as media indicates but sure to look ahead for the same very soon ) but from the perspective of incremental changes that have occurred in my personality over two years . It can be attributed to broadening of the perspective , ability to face failures and building patience.

I believe the school has important role to play here as the following facts endorse

~There were 100 of us coming from SRCCs, Xaviers RECs and some of the best institutes in the country. The only common element being the fact that we were dreaming of IIMs or XLRIs yet were not in there and were feeling dejected. Yet , this institute precisely harps on this fact in a POSITIVE manner.

~The ambience is such that within days , the two batches of 100 each ( seniors and juniors ) , join together as a bunch of people who are extremely ambitious to perform better than IIM or any other similar B-schools , closely bound within the range of a common objective and most importantly are pushing each other hard to perform and reach higher.

~ The corporate environment is best simulated in the institute . Oh no I am not talking about the infrastructure or things like that ( they are already well placed ) but in terms of working here. Example , if there is some idea which you feel is noteworthy and can make good of the students, the institute is willing to take it in PROVIDED you prove the mettle across the various decision making bodies , Isn?t it similar to what happens when you are dealing with a prestigious clients? So the simulation of corporate experience starts here and is extremely helpful as you move ahead in corporate life. I can talk as an authority about this experience today after working two years in a reputed investment banking firm.

~ One typical philosophy on which institute believes is placement is NOT THE ONLY OBJECTIVE but it is one of the objectives OTHER THAN OVERALL PERSONALITY GROOMING, EXPOSURE AND IMPARTING STRENGTH OF THE MIND TOGETHER making them I might sound foolishly idealistic when I say like this , but believe me this has been a consistent feedback from our alumni ? who occupy some of the top notch positions in industry.

~I have a strong belief that in the LONG TERM this helps a lot. Please do not mis-interpret me , GIM has excellent placements this year and also last year too. The average salary this year has been around 4.25 Lac with more than one offer for everyone ( approximate data ) , but the institute has a firm belief in developing long lasting competencies. While recruiters from debt markets and market research are regular here the share of IT , marketing and consultancy companies is fairly high.

~ The institute enjoys excellent relations with the local industry , which is a good thing. Through plethora of industry interactions , visits and projects at various forums, It prepares all of us to create the business models ,and strategies not only for the resource rich , high flying MNCs but from the perspective of Small and medium enterprises. These skills certainly are critical for any successful business manager.

~ About infrastructure and facilities, I need not talk much. It is simply world class. Campus offers a splendid view of river mandovi and institute has many good things to boast in terms of close surrounding to the nature. Faculty is also one of the best in their fields and there is a sizable number of visiting faculty across the globe visiting this institute.

~So if you believe that knowledge with all these values can make you a good corporate over your career , GIM can certainly be a great choice. If you have something to be done on your own and believe the theory ? there are no free lunches , this could be a good career choice. Please understand that getting out of a B-school is not a beginning of bed of roses to follow ( as it is usually ) but the fact that it is beginning of much harder corporate career , GIM certainly helps u prepare well for the same.

~So , all those who are not going into IIMs, ISBs , but still want to have a differentiated mark of your own in the corporate world and importantly have patience to seek justified remarks , should certainly look at this option positively.

Hi ..

I am presently a student of GIM completed my first year and now in Bombay in Benntt Colemen Co Ltd for my summer internship.

Well what can I tell u?..See the college is ideally rated as no 15-16 in India. It has average placements...with average being 3.12 without CTC..if you include CTC it comes to be around 4+.

The faculty and the program delievery with the worload and quality of educationis definetly the plus point...thtwould put theinstitute any day in top 5. Being in goa contrary to popular conception is not a disadvantage with goa being a major industrial center. The facilities are damn good...and the work culture alongwith the kind of students is extremelygood. A very healthy atmosphere to study and enjoy both.

100% residential in a closed beautiful campus..I hope this would setlle ur curiousity..anything else u want to know M2M me here.

I presume if you have posted this query on 17th april..you proabbly have a call from the institute.. So, hope to see you soon in Goa on 28th June.

Signing off,

ciao

Not the Best but a decent Institute
Apr 05, 2004 06:24 PM 9590 Views

I am an ex-student of GIM of the batch of 2003,and trust me the Academic Quality is one of the best, better than even the best of the B-Schools as we have got 4-5 permanent Faculties who are Fellows(P.Hd) from IIM's. This is one thing not many B-Schools can boast of. Also the Curriculum structure is very well-balanced making all the students a well rounded manager, and a genaral manager, not to say that no specialisations are offered but still in todays's Corporate World one needs to be a General Manager having knowledge of all the fields and not being rigid.

Talking about the Infrastrucure, every room is connected via-Intranet, and we have hostels to accomodate every student. The Institute is located on the lovely bank of River Mandovi. The locales are awesome. We have 3 messes in the campus, and every facility is available right on your doorstep. Even a Bar is right across the Institute. Don't be surprised its Goa afterall.

The placement scene has also improved considerably since the last 2-3 years. This time 78 students were placed on the first day itself of the Placement Week, the average salaries are not mind boggling but decent enough.

Also Goa is a great place to be in while spending two very important years of life. After hours and hours of slogging you can easily go 4 kms down the road and you would find a beach to relax and chill. Plus in the Tourist season, its awesome.

As all my review has been on the positive aspects of the Institute, now some negative ones also, GIM faces a Locational Disadvantage as its in Goa and not in Mumbai or Bangalore, so we dont get very good visiting Faculty thats why the focus on Permanent Faculty. Other than that there are one which I can think of.

All in All, 3 years back I had 3 final calls, 2 in institutes which were in my Hometown and 1 in goa but I opted for Goa after doing a bit of research, and I bet I made the right decision. Considering the fact that currently I am working in one of the leading HR Consulting firms and doing pretty well for myself...
