Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest, The - Stieg Larsson Reviews

Ideal Thriller, Ideal ending

I was a bit apprehensive about the size of the book when I took it up. But as the plot unfolded I was left wanting more. The excellent closure book for the'Millenium Triology'.

However, the first quarter pages especially about SAPO were too much detailed and kind of dragging but if you successfully complete those pages, then you would find the book almost impossible to put it down.

Stieg Larsson has succeeded in creating a sense to protect'Lisbeth' among the readers.Few twists especially in the end could be anticipated. It is a pity that we will not be able to read more of Lisbeth and Blomkvist.

Hats off to Stieg Larsson. The book keeps u at grip from start to end. and with a thrilling suspense, I recommend this to all the crime/thriller fans out there. and hence a worthy successor for the previous two books. and yea I recommend you read the previous books as well before getting to this.

Awesome Ending

I just read all three of the novels, it is probarly one of the best thrillers I have ever read. the heroine of the novels salander is probarly one of the most unusual heroine of all times . it is a great loss that the author is no more to write more sequels.

Stieg larsson must be laughing in heaven. his trilogy has broken several records. its an amazing three books, though very much like a masala hindi movie at times. but his narrative runs smooth as silk and the characters are interesting enough to keep you glued to the end. surely you will lose a lot of working hours reading these fabulous books!

You cannot stop yourself from not reading all the three parts of the book, once you start reading the first book of the series. But THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE NOVEL.

Explosive finally

This is the(3rd) last of the trilogy. When you finish it, you feel satisfied and happy. The issues - that were open since the 1st book - are resolved. It is complete.

The girl, who was so insignificant in the 1st book(where one almost starts wondering why the book was named after her at all!), becomes a giant of a character. In fact she becomes one of the most iconic fictional characters of all time. She almost shakes up the whole Swedish(where the story is based) government. A nobody who seems nothing better than a tramp becomes a larger than life character.

Anyone who picks up this book would have already finished the first two - and by the time you finish the second(which you would have read at twice the speed of the first!) would be itching to start the 3rd.

These 3 books are a fantastic achievement and its shame the author is dead. RIP Stieg Larsson.

Millennium III - Lisbeth Salander Fights Back!
May 08, 2011 11:02 PM 2686 Views

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest is the third and final book in the Millennium series by Steig Larsson.

A bit of the background, which I also mentioned when I reviewed the 2nd title in the series. The Millennium trilogy written by Steig  Larsson consists of three books- The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The  Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.  Larsson was a Swedish journalist who was considered one of the most  prominent experts on right-wing and Nazi associations, and also ran the  magazine Expo.

He died of a heart attack in 2004. After his death, the trilogy was published first in Swedish, the books then became  worldwide best-sellers and have been translated into many languages. He  has left behind outlines and plots for many more novels in the  series.(From wikipedia)

Although all the novels are Crime genre, there is a different feel to each of them. The first title is more a crime/mystery and also establishes the background story. The second one is a crime/thriller and very fast paced. The third title is more sedately paced, and deals with the aftermath of crime, political crimes and crimes against civil rights.

The series has two protagonists. Mikael Blomkvist is an investigative journalist with an impressive track record and questionable personal life. Lisbeth Salander- "the girl"- is an anti-social, secretive girl who is very intelligent and a brilliant computer hacker. Salander is one of the most original characters you have or will read in a long time.

The story picks up right where it left off in the previous book. Within a few pages it becomes clear that everything is not going to be wrapped up neatly as regards to the Salander affair. Next we are introduced to 'The Section' -the secret within the secret police- the villains of the story, their conspiracy and the crimes they are ready to commit to cover-up the crimes they have already committed. This part is a bit slow. Just as you are wondering why they can't see the obvious, thing start to move forward.

After this, enter a number of new characters as the personal and official investigations intensify and the highest echelons of government become involved in a bid to unearth one of the most shocking scandals seen in the country. This part of the book has two problems. First, the story takes place in Sweden , a country whose politics and governance are largely unknown to most people. Second, the author goes into a lot of detail about Constitutional procedures and police and security structure which seems to drag on for a while.

Around 300 pages into the book, the story really picks up. This is the really intriguing part of the book- with chaos, conspiracies, spying, stalkers and whatnot. Blomkvist and Salander's boss Armansky come up with resourceful and ingenious ideas for the investigation. Best of all, we are given a glimpse into Salander's privileged world- that of the world's best hackers. Then comes the courtroom drama, which has also been well-written and you cannot help but be drawn into it. The character of Blomkvist's sister and Salander's lawyer- Annika Giannini deserves a special mention as a tough-as-nails, honest lawyer who takes on a number of perverse men and grounds them into dust. The last part of the book is dramatic and satisfying.

Also, Larsson's books have highlighted and condemned crimes against women. This is actually the cornerstone of his novels. This one is no different.

The book moves much slower than its prequel and takes some patience initially. But it is a brilliant piece of writing and fulfilling conclusion to the series. Overall the series is excellent and will be commemorated for unique crime writing. In particular, Salander will be a character long remembered.

I ordered all 3 novels from flip cart.com. I finished the first2 and reading the 3rd one. They are sequel to each, kept me absorbed. The author died unexpectedly on completion of the draft of all 3 books. Books were published after his death. More of Swedish names and European background. If you are interested in thrillers, you can read this each book is about 700 pages and priced Rs 263 free shipping. Something about this Author

His relentless personality and political convictions did not make life easy. He famously took on some dangerous neo-Nazi opponents, making for much speculation that this enemies, who often told him that his days were numbered, may have a hand in his premature demise. This difficult man, brilliant and multifaceted, is the subject of penetrating biography and a celebration of his remarkable life and books.

Staggering and Astounding

In case you have read The girl who played with the fire, the first few pages will give you some unrelated abstract which you find in a way not connected to the whole story in that novel. However when you come to the end of the The girl who kicked the hornets' nest, you started to recall that part of the abstract was indeed from it . In other words, The girl who kicked the Hornet's nest is actually conclusive part and final part of of the Millenniuum series.

When one find the relationship between Zala and Salander in Millennium -II, it seems that can of worms has been opened, however in Millennium-III when the secret of section of SIS/SAPO(Sweden Secret Agency) is about to expose, they start to suppress the Lisbeth story as it can be dangerous for the section's survival and they start killing spree just to keep them self alive. Story at once starts moving the moment Lisbeth is brought to hospital with Zala(which she tried to kill using Axe). Mikael Blomkvist, tried to help her by all his means and story gets the speed.

The only thing I didn't really enjoy was love angle between Mikeal and SIS agent, its when Lisbeth is lying in the hospital deprived of everything. But I guess that is how everyone is, especially in Europe when they don't get into core of love, physical needs are just needed to be satisfied, no matter how. Larsson had this kinky stuff in all of the three novels, but it never shadow the main story.

Anyway Stieg Larsson again proved he was the best and the master story teller. Keeping labyrinth of characters(unconventional names for Indians), he never ever deviated from the main plot. Not a single character is complete pure or impure and that is how the world is.

As far as complexity of plot goes, sometimes you feel the plot is crystal clear however Larsson keeps the reader guessing and brings so many ups and downs and even in last few pages you feel as if something was about to get closed. Recommended for everyone who loves crime/ thrill and suspense. Keep watching your adrenaline level time and again while reading it:).
