General Thoughts on New York City Reviews

MY TRIBUTE TO NYC IS THE PLACES I REMEMBER
Mar 03, 2002 05:01 AM 5753 Views

The population of NEW YORK CITYIS OVER 8 million people that have come to live here from around the World. Manhattan and the Bronx on an Island and is one of the 5 districts that make up NYC. The other 3 are Brooklyn, Queens and Staton Island.

I have been to NYC three times. I have never been there after they build the Twin Towers that were destroyed in the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

I have seen the STATUE OF LIBERTY, (from afar twice and once I took a ferry to visit her), each time but one time I saw the other side as I was arriving on the Queen E II. It was designed by the same Man, (Gustave Eiffel), who designed the Eiffel Tower. The Statue was a gift from France to the United States in 1885. It was made in France, dismantled, shipped to NYC and put together again. She is about 151 feet tall from her base to the top of her torch, there are 25 windows, she is 22 stories high and her weight is 450,000 pounds, (225 tons). The inscription is, (in Roman Numerals), on her tablet says 'July 4, 1776', (the date of the United States Declaration of Independence from Great Britain). Once I went to the top and I counted each of the 354 steps as I climbed to the top. It was worth the effort and my sore muscles the next day because the view was spectacular.

BATTERY PARK is on the Hudson River and was name from a line of British cannons that once protected the harbor in the late 1600s. This part is across the river from the Statue of Liberty. I come here to visit the Hope Garden. I love roses and there are 10,000 of them here. There are Memorials to the Veterans of World War II, the Korean War and people who died from AIDS.

CENTRAL PARK is in the Center of the City. It is very large and is about 6.1 miles. There are many paths that you can take, (please only go into the park during the day). We have seen all of the attractions that include the Carousel, the Marionette Theater, the Summer Stage, the Wildlife Center, the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, the Delacorte Theater, the Great Lawn, the Henry Luce Nature Observatory, the Wollman & Lasker Rinks, the Loeb Boathouse and the North Meadow.

The EMPIRE STATE BUILDING held the title, (for many years), of being the 'tallest building in the World'. Thank goodness you can take an elevator up to the 86th floor to see the Observatory. If you saw the film 'Sleepless In Seattle' you'll know what the view is like.

We visited ST. PATRICK CATHEDRAL, (the seat of the Archdiocese of New York) on our way to spend some time at the MOMA, (Museum of Modern Art). This is a Gothic styled Church and is beautiful inside and out.

We watched the ice skaters at ROCKEFELLER CENTERand took in a 'Rocket' Show at RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL. We went to Hazard Street to see the 28,000 items on display at the exhibits at the JEWISH MUSEUM. I did not want to go to the UNITED NATIONS BUILDING because I am not too happy with that organization.

At TIMES SQUARE we saw the large screen that you see on the New Years Eve count down. This area once had about 76 Theaters and the famous SARDIS RESTAURANT. We were only here for a few minutes because the beggars surrounded us, the prostitutes propostioned my Husband and I saw a purse snatched by a driver of a moped.

Everyone must stroll down 5th Avenue to see the expensive Department Stores and Designer Shops. Even if you can't afford to buy something it is really something to see. New York does not seem to have any large Malls in the City. The closest thing I could find was a few floors in the Trump Tower.

In SOHO you will see artisans, the trendy crowd, 'want-to-be models' and a mixture of rich people of all ages. In GREENWICH VILLAGEthere are a lot of Club, strange Shops, people with purple hair wearing tattoos and there bodies were body pierced everywhere.

If we are in New York on Sunday we go to the area around Orchard Street. There is an open market that is similar to Petty Coat Lane in London, England. They are selling the same things that we saw in the 5th Avenue Department Stores. This once was a Jewish Area and there still are some wonderful Deli's.

THE MUSICAL THEATER

I have seen the original casts of `The Sound of Music', 'Barum',`Camelot', 'Guys and Dolls', '42 Street', `Chicago', `Bumbling Brown Sugar' and a `Choirs Line'.

WHERE I LIKE TO EAT

In Central Park we like to eat lunch at 'Village on the Green'.

Carnegie Deli makes mile high sandwiches and great chicken soup with matzo balls.

The Upper West Side is where you'll find rotisserie chickens at the 'Chicken Fair', great Japanese food at 'Planet Sushi', the Manhattan Diner we had French Toast made from Challah, (Jewish egg bread), and at the small cafe called 'Miss Ellie's' we had home made pasta.

BRIGHTON BEACH is now called 'little Odessa'. There are some wonderful places to eat blintzes, borscht and cabbage rolls.

Any Hot Dog Stand is great. I love to fill my bun with chili, cheese and raw onions to get the best 'heart burn money can buy'!

SOME THOUGHTS

New York, you are really cosmopolitan
Mar 02, 2002 02:07 PM 2104 Views

New York, you are truly cosmopolitan. There are people of all nationalities and all religions, young and old, men and women belonging to all professions. The Columbia University is a great University.

I first visited New York in 1966 as a Fulbright Scholar under the Cleveland International Programme. We stayed at the Hotel Abbey Victoria, very close to the Radio City Music Hall. We had our Orientation Programme here. After the Orientation Programme, I left for Cleveland, Ohio.

While at New York, I had visited the United Nations, and had been to its General Assembly, Security Council Room and the Trusteeship Council Room. It is here that my desire to join the United Nations was born. After four years I joined the United Nations System as a Member the UNESCO Team in Indonesia.

I visited New York again in 1984 on my way to Jamaica. At the JFK Airport, after I landed, I found my Suitcase broken and some Cufflinks stolen

Whatever it is, I liked New York and am eagerly looking forward to visit my daughter Kasturi, who lives in Ossining, very close to NY, in June next.

A Poem to remember the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Oct 28, 2001 07:02 AM 1893 Views

September Eleventh Two Thousand One

The Day the World Changed, certainly a day to remember,

A day that faceless cowards attacked not just America but the World,

A day that our children will learn about forever,

A day that America once again pulled together to help out,

A day that allowed us as American citizens to witness a time of healing,

A day to teach our children what life can sometimes be about,

A day to truly know what a war zone feels like; that people in other countries go through war zones daily; is this what we are becoming like; other countries?

A day to truly understand what it means to be fire fighter, a doctor or a nurse,

A day to truly know how “horrible” can feel, a day to cry, morn, help,

A day to trust, forgive, forget; but finding it hard to do so,

A day to be angry, disgusted, frightened, and yet with good reason,

A day to be ourselves, Americans, a Country of Freedom and The Free,

A day that we will relive in our hearts, our minds forever and ever,

A day that will be in our history books; that our grandchildren will know and learn about,

A day to give blood, money or yourself in some kind of way,

A day to hear of the true hero’s; the hero’s, who died on planes for their country,

A day where we will go in time and wonder why,

A day that shocked us all, but made us stronger,

A day to remember just who we are; American’s,

A day to truly know what it means to be scared; a day that we will never understand,

A day that has changed us all in one-way or another, a day of just change,

A day of cancels, of parents calling schools to check on their children,

A day of awe, of peace, of rescue,

A day that we have learned that it was time for some to go,

A day that we have learned that it was not others time to go,

A day we heard of heroic stories that made our hearts sing,

A day we heard of stories that made our hearts angry,

A day we share is a total sadness, of sorrow,

A day of seriousness, without a doubt this is true, a day of disbelief,

A day of flames soaring from our skies that left a smoke filled sky; a sky in disarray,

A day that we found in our newspapers pictures of death, of fear, of hopelessness,

A day that we wonder where do we go from here; who, why, how,

A day that we have blamed our own American citizens, because they are descendants from another country,

A day that we have scorned American citizens because they are a different color, race or religion,

A day that we throw rocks at other people; break out windows in their “House’s of Worship”, call them names and tell them to go home, they are home remember?

A day where we should not blame Americans of any race, color, creed, religion or background, but we are doing just that,

A day that we should NOT be throwing rocks into windows of others “House of Worship”, or their businesses, or their homes,

A day that we should NOT scorn our own, but look to them for love and help and growth,

A day that we should be ashamed of ourselves for blaming those we have no right to do,

A day that we may now go to war, perhaps against another country, a serious moment in our lives, a day where it is NOT over, security at an all time high,

A day of true sacrifice or a day that perhaps we will kill the innocent in another country or a day of both,

A day that we call on all countries around the world to back the Americans, should we go to war, some agreeing, some not, some won’t,

A day that we crack down further on terrorist, to make them understand that we will not stand for this, that we are America, the Home of the Brave, of The Free,

A day that we search for answers; that we cannot find completely, or quickly enough,

A day that we stay glued to the news, crying along the way, angry, hurt, pained, wondering what will be next, who will be next,

A day that we discover that terrorism is indeed real and finding out the hard way just how real it is, a day we don’t believe the lies from other countries,

A day that we hear of leads to those who did this to us, wondering what justice will be done, wondering which country will come forward with the one we blame,

A day that our Government finds themselves changed forever, serious decisions now must be made, decisions perhaps never even thought of,

A day that we must support our Government and let them do their jobs, trusting that they will do what is right for America,

A day that we discover more and more with each report just how bad this really is, just how angry we are, or how angry we have become,

A day that we must put personal hatred aside and work together, and realize that all who live here in our country are not bad people, but love this country too, live and work here,

A day to pray, hope, love and to truly come together as one Country, one People,

A day to be a good neighbor, to lend a helping hand, not hatred,

A day of no sunshine, no matter how bright the sun may shine, but knowing that the sun will return, that America will shine again,

A day that dust, dirt, debris came floating down from our sky, covering a city that stands so bright, that stands for the first step of our Freedom,

A day of concrete, of metal, of steel; melting, tearing, ripping down and down, until it could come down no more, wondering when it will end,

A day in our History that will never go away, a day to remember, a day that will be remembered in time to come, a time that we all will remember,

A day that we have changed, a day that will bring many memorials, many prayers, many people uniting together as one Country, one Nation,

A day that cowards still hide, that left behind their coward ways, their so called heroism, their so called god, their so called religion, in which we want NO part of, just go away,

A day that the enemy is the enemy and they are hiding those they know are responsible, maybe?, not wanting to work with us in any way,

A day that we are truly now at war, a day that surely brings more change,

A day that another attack may still be at hand, a time to pray once again, and not to stop those prayers,

A day full of significance, of meaning, of lost loves, of new friendships, a lifetime of pain and joy,

A day that we know some are missing and may never be found, some terrorist are still missing too, will we find them, if so, how?

A day that we have the largest “drag net” in the history of our country, to find the one’s who did this pain to us, to bring them down, how ever we have to do,

God help us all to survive, to do what is right, to pull together, to trust, to stand up for our own no matter the color of the skin, the religion they choose, the place they may live, the job they may work,

We are all Americans and have no right to blame our own, so stop it! Instead, look around and see where we can help, where we can grow, where we can pull together more, pray if you believe, teach our children right, teach them it’s okay to cry, it’s okay to hurt, it’s okay to pull together, it’s okay to unite, it’s okay to be an American.

But don’t teach our children that it’s okay to blame those who are not to blame, to throw rocks, to yell “Go Home!” don’t teach them to hate.

We are at war and we must be so together as one Country, one Nation and ALL AMERICAN’S.

God Bless us all

Let us get on with life
Sep 28, 2001 06:53 PM 1999 Views

11th September was probably the worst terrorist attack in the history of Mankind on Mother Earth. My deepest condolance to all that have lost their lives and my solidarity to their families. This attack has taken terrorism to a new dimension and must be curbed immidiately, before terror takes over.

Mr. Bush has probably the most difficult job to lead a nation bleeding of vengence. Terrorism must be stopped and we all have to get together to do it. It is not a man or a one nation job. But let us get on with it. The stalemate that we are currently in reeks of uncertainty. World economy is probably going through its worst phase because no wise man is able to make a definate speculation. How long can we go on like this? If it will take a war to wipe out terrorism, so be it, so be it now.

Being part of the tourism industry in India, I experience the dropping occupancies in the season of maximisation. On an average hotels in major metros have lost close to 2000 room nights in the last fifteen days. If Osama, or how evre, wanted to cripple the world, they have done a good job of it. Diwali is around the corner, Christmas not far away either. It is not the festivities that one is bothered about, it is about the people whose livelyhood takes an upwardly bend in this season.

Let us all together join this war in whichever manner we are capable of and get over with this fast so that we all can get back to our respective lives, in the manner we want to live.

New York - Trade Center Bombing
Sep 28, 2001 02:17 AM 1610 Views

It's terrible what happened in New York. The day it happened I was in Jamaica, it came over the international news report. My aunt and I just stood there watching the video of what happened to the Trade Center and the plane that hit it. When I got back to (here) America, I saw it for myself, not only that but hearing stories from my brother that he saw all of it from his school building window, some people from our church was literally in it but by the grace of God, they all were not missing, there were all accounted for. One church member said that he came out of his truck in time cause right then a big piece of like the building fell (probably from the top of the building I dunno) through the spot where he was sitting, and he said he was running; about 3 inches of dust covered his hole body, he had no idea where he was running to or what just took place. I herd from my cousin that he saw it from his college building( his college is in manhattan).

A lot of people where cought up in this tragedy and didnt make it, but remember some did..

We should give God the praise any how!!

It was written on the wall!
Sep 24, 2001 09:53 PM 2108 Views

September 11 terrorist attack at New York is one of the back days in the history of mankind , my sympathies are with the people of America who have suffered and are still suffering from the losses of thousands of lives and property and above all their pride. This act against humanity has a very far reaching consequences to the history of the world and the world will never be the same.

This one was not just merely another incident which can be easily forgotten, this has shown the ugly side of the present world which has build up over the time slowly and surly. Terrorism has become a rule of game to achieve many objectives and has been fuelled by religious or ideological fanatism and even by the states as mean to destabilise the enemy nations. Millions of innocent lives have been lost and huge property lost due to terrorism which has become global phenomenon. Some times revenge like bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has resulted biggest act of terrorism. The Frankastine created by most powerful nations of the world is now hitting back with vengeance.

Many memories of terrorism still haunt us , the massacre at Germany during Olympics, Bombay blasts, continuous terrorist acts at Kashmir, Ireland and many other places where millions of innocents lost their lives. These have failed to awake the world, hence these type of catastrophe was written on the wall. Now since the sacrifice of thousands of Americans has able to stir the conscience of the world, let us hope this dreaded menace will get eradicated from the face of the globe. This will require certain amount of introspection by all of us specially by riches and powerful. The Frankestine we have created, the arms we have sold to enrich our coffers are now hurting us.

War as an act of revenge is not the solution to the problem, destroying a person or a group or even a nation will not serve any purpose rather it will aggravate it, terrorism is like a weed to be destroyed everywhere whatever is the logic of terrorism.

The war against terrorism requires a concentrated and honest effort from all of us and all countries of the world. All has to rise above selfish motives, concern for all and removal of hate is necessary to fight the battle against terrorism. Let us all pray with Pope who said ” I beg to God to keep the world in peace”

Mom, did they get the bad guy?
Sep 24, 2001 11:41 AM 1573 Views

This is a review written on the impact of Sept 11, 2001 on my children and my best friends little boy.

This afternoon as my best friend and I talked about the events of the last two days, she told me her 5 year old son asked her that question. She said she told him ''Mitch, they don't even know who the bad guy is or where he is.'' Now how do we explain this to our children? How do we make them feel safe again? How can we keep the monsters under the bed from coming out? It was so easy before September 11 to get mom or dad to tell the monsters to go away or sweep them away. How do you tell a monster to leave when you cannot find it?

My two are 14 and 15. They are angry, hurt and totally confused as to why someone would do this to so many people who never hurt anyone. I told them that these people do not value the lives of their people like we do. We value the lives of our children above all else and they (whom ever ''they'' are) know that. They use it against us like they did in Vietnam. Death does not care how old you are or how you live your life. Death just is.

At our home we believe in God. Pure and simple you say? Well, not really. How do you explain to your child that God is a loving God and bad things are not supposed to happen to “good” people? I suppose you could say that “the devil made them do it” but we know better. They made a choice. We can make a choice as well. We choose to keep on going. We will not be beaten.

Death is a part of life. We never know when it is going to come or how it is going to come. We all hope that we go in our sleep, in no pain and most of us want to die in our own bed at home. No one wants to die in a car wreck or lay and suffer for any length of time. My daughter looked at me and said “Mom, do you think any of the people on the planes suffered or knew what was coming?” Here is what I told her and my son.

Yes they suffered. They suffered because they knew they were going to die. Most suffered because they knew they would never be able to tell the ones they loved that they loved them. They suffered because they probably knew death was coming and they could do nothing to stop it. They also suffered because some of them probably knew they were going to be used like torpedoes to hit buildings.

My son then asked me what would I do if he or his sister or any member of our family had been killed yesterday. Death again. I told him I would cry, scream, probably break some dishes and be very angry. “But mom”. He said. “What would you do if I had died yesterday?” (there is death again). I don’t know what I would do. How do you tell his sister that he is never coming home again? How do you tell her he won’t be walking home from school with her anymore? How do I tell his father there is no more “guy time” or how do I tell my parents their first born grandson is gone? I tell them one heart beat at a time.

I tell his sister he is still walking with her only he is her guardian angel now. He will always be there for her and with her. I tell his father he will be riding in the truck with him as he goes coast to coast. I tell my mom and dad he is riding the 4-wheeler in heaven. I tell myself that my reason for living seems all but gone. I tell myself that I have to go on for his sister’s sake, my husband’s sake and in honor of him. I cannot let what happened break my spirit.

My daughter does not understand why we are all so worried in our area. We have nothing really major around us “as she says” and why would they bother us? Why did our football games get canceled? Why is my life being put on hold? Why can’t I go outside and walk the dogs? Why why why….here is what I told her.

The reason the game was canceled was out of respect for the people that died. We needed to pause and remember them and that they we real people. I told her to think about a loss we had in our family due to a suicide and how angry we were that it seemed as if no one stopped to acknowledge that he was loved, had a life and would be missed. Putting things on hold was our way to say in a very small way “we understand as best we can that you have had a terrible terrible loss.”

Your life is not on hold, just on pause. Just pause and breathe. You will go to football games and you will play softball in the spring. Pause to remember those that won’t and play for them. Remember the little ones that will never get to play t-ball and the parents that will never get to “load up the cooler and head out to the game” to see their kids play like we can for you. We will remember them and hold them in our hearts. “But mom, WHY us?”

Why us? Because we are a successful nation. We are a strong nation. We are outspoken about things that we think are wrong and we are always ready to help. We have choices in our country. We choose to be free.

There is no easy way to tell an adult about death let alone a child. My friend told her son that God just needed a few more angels in heaven. To a 5-year-old that was good enough. But he still wants to know where the bad guy is and is he coming back. That one we can’t answer.

The Horror of It All
Sep 22, 2001 07:32 AM 1507 Views

This is just the way I feel about what is going on in our country at this moment. The facts can be seen on the television screen. Feelings can only be relayed through our words.

I sit here tonight after spending two days in front of the television set. I still can hardly believe my eyes at what I am seeing. The terror in New York and Washington D.C. is something so difficult to comprehend. I am so far away from the danger and the confusion, yet the overflow of it seems to land right in my back door. I am sure that I am not the only one who feels that way. This has changed all of our lives in a mighty way. It has changed our world, our life, and our very way of being forever.

As parents, we spend a life time teaching our children the difference between right and wrong. We tell them to look for the good in everything and everyone. How do I find good in this? As my children sit in a classroom--thousands of miles away from the initial attack--their worlds are too changed forever.

My children, ages three, five, seven, and eight--attend school on a military base. Seeing solders training is a way of life for them. But, to listen to them as they cry over the events of the day, and the things that they saw--will forever break my heart.

Call One: The base and the schools are on full military alert. It is not known when your children will be able to return home.

I sit in horror as I watch the events in New York take place before my very eyes through the power of technology. Technology that was unable to foresee or prevent what was about to unfold. Many children were being returned to their parents so a time of healing and bonding and reassurance could begin to take place. I, however, did not have that luxury because my children were in a lock down. Yet, I had to fall to my knees and praise GOD. For I knew where my family was and that they were safe. There were many in our country who did not.

Call Two: Mommy, we are so scared. The soldiers are not just practicing. They are running around and they have machine guns. Mommy--This time they are loaded and they are pointing them at other moms and dads who only want to come and get their children.

I sit here in horror as I watch the events of the day unfold. I fall to my knees and I pray for my children who are afraid of what they are seeing. Yet, I praise GOD! For I knew that what they were seeing was nothing compared to what the children in New York were seeing.

Another Call: Mommy, they are going to let us come home. None of us will be on the same bus. We have to get the first one that they put us on, but we will be home. Please be looking for us. We need you to hug us and let us know that everything will be okay. We need to know that everything will be the way it was.

I sit here in tears as I watch the events of yet another day unfold. I anxiously await the arrival of my children. I fall to my knees and I pray to GOD! How do I tell my children that nothing will ever be the same?

My general thoughts on New York City: I feel so helpless. What can I do? Will there ever be enough money or donations that can change what has happened there? I feel ashamed. I sit here relieved and happy that my family will once again be together, when I know that other families will never be together again. I feel anger. Why? Why does there have to be so much hate in the world? Did whoever did this sleep better tonight because of what they had done? Will we when we get even? I sit here in peace knowing that there is a greater power than I who will ultimately decide and help me with all of these feelings.

A life time a way.
Sep 21, 2001 09:10 PM 2212 Views

As you all know last week New York City was the site of a terriable act of shame.

I call it shame because no one in their right mind would cause such terriabe distruction.

Today I would rather talk about what is happening in our country not what has happened.

As I wathched the news this morning, I listened as the reporters told of the death and distruction that Americans are causing. Innocent people are being killed on our streets because of the color of their skin, the way they dress and the way that they chose to worship the lord.

This rage against the Arab people is because of what Bin Ladin did to New York City.

The red neck mentallity in this country has to stop. Our country was and is made up from people from all over the world. This is what has made our country what it is today.

We are a nation of the mixed people of the world. We are all American no matter the color of our shin.

For those who are bringing terrior to the people of our country and whom claim to be true Americans , you need to stop and think before you act. For in the eyes of the true American, you are no better than Bin Ladin when you beat that person who is differnt than you.

USA will never win
Sep 21, 2001 08:19 PM 1804 Views

As long as US insists on fighting a ''War against Terror'' it can never win.

First of all let us examine the word terrorist i.e. someone who creates terror, by use or threatened use of force or violence. Basically what people are terrified is the unknown, who does these things, where and when will they strike next. This is what terrorist use to play on a persons psyche, making life a living hell.

If we were to actually see the people behind this terror, there is very little chance of anyone feeling any terror all. Try and think about it, why would anyone be afraid of a pathetic desperate person who has nothing worth living for in life and seeks revenge on the world in any way, even to the extent of losing their own lives. At the most we would feel pity for such people.

This is the emotion we need to use to try and fight terrorism, pity not anger. The only way to stop people from turning into terrorist is by giving them something to live for, not another reason to die, which is what a war against Afghanistan will lead to. More poverty, more anger and more hatred and alot more terrorist.

One would ask then, should we show pity towards, Bin Ladin, a person who supposedly has millions of dollars and has everything to live for and yet is the cause of all this mayhem, what we forget is, it isn't Bin Ladin who killed himself flying those planes into the building, he too needed those desperate souls to do his dirty work and he capitalised on their miserable conditions to brainwash them into thinking US was responsible for all their misery. That is the kind of person that should be executed without a second thought, who lives off the poverty of others to cause more suffering in the world but does nothing to improve their lives.

What US needs to do now do is give Aid rather than war to the afghans, further if pakistan asks for 30 billion dollars in return for Bin Ladin, give them 60 billion but make sure it goes to those who need it most to make their lives worth living and not to line the pockets of b*stard politicians who are worth nothing. No one bites the hand that feeds it......

Info on an Indian victim
Sep 21, 2001 10:07 AM 2072 Views

This may not be the exact place to put this and I apologise for the same. This is some information I received yesterday and after seeing the same on Star News decided to put it up here. I just reproduce the mail that I received regarding a WTC victim

Hi People !,

There is a guy admitted at Staten Island Hospital with severe burns.

He is in the ICU right now. They only know his first name as TUSHAR and he used to work at WTC. Nobody contacted the hospital asking for him until now.

If any of you know a person with this first name and if he is missing,

contact hospital immediately. Or pass this mail along to your friends and co-workers just in case they might know him.

Kindly forward this to as many people as fast as possible, preferable across organizations.

Firstly my sympathies are with the families of the people lost, the emergency workers, and the people injured.

Tuesday 11th September will be a day the world will NEVER forget. It was the day the United States of America came to halt, and was devastated by the actions of a minority ist group.

The famous twin towers of the world trade centre in New York, the Pentagon in Washington and a wooded area in Pennsylvania-all severely damaged by the small anti-human ‘sect’ who obviously prey on people.

Questions will undoubtedly be asked in the future; how did the planes manage to get outside their allocated flight area? How did the hijackers get on board without detection? And many other questions!

It is totally unbelievable that such devastation can be caused all in one day. There are rumours that another attempt at hijacking a plane has been foiled in the USA. I hope the rumours (mentioned on GMTV in the UK) are wrong.

I should imagine that a majority of the UK (and the rest of the world) would know someone who knows someone who knows someone who was involved in someway…. Personally, my niece should be flying to the USA next week for the holiday of a lifetime. I’m just glad they never booked it a week earlier, as they were going to New York. It’s just unthinkable.

But is it right to take revenge on the Muslims in this country and others around the world? I fear not, people shouldn’t be injured just because someone of the same faith might have done this terrible act! Instead, find the culprit and deal with them accordingly. None of us can surely feel anything but disdain for the instigator of the act?

The toll is now in the thousands, and the British toll is expected to reach at least the middle hundreds (currently there are around 100 confirmed ).

Living not too far from Lakenheath in the UK, where the USA has one of its main air bases in the UK-people around here are worried that air strikes in other countries as retaliation might result in trouble in this area – I hope not. However, I think the majority of people worldwide are probably concerned about the talk of war.

I was directed to a book of condolences that you might like to sign, it is at: https://towermemorial.com

Britain holds a close relationship to the people of America, and that relationship will always be in place (hopefully). Hopefully the people of the USA will know that the British public are thinking and praying for them at this sad time.

There is so much to say, and yet so little that hasn’t already been said.

Let Peace Prevail

What has happened in America is a grievous crime against humanity. The perpetrators are insane in a kind of way. There is no reason in the world that can justify what has happened. The immediate reaction is shock, anger, loathing, resentment.

Having said all that, I must also affirm that killing or harming other innocent people is not going to be the solution. It will only add a new dimension to the problem. President Bush is talking WAR. Against who? The Afghans? Should the innocent people of Afghanistan suffer because of some madmen operating from their soil? Aren’t they victims themselves? I hear that people of Arab descent are under attack in America. In fact I’m just reading that Sikhs are under attack in New York although they have nothing to do with bin Laden, in the mistaken belief that they are religiously linked with him. This misunderstanding is caused by the fact that they wear turbans and are bearded.

It is rather harsh to say that any good can come out of a tragedy of this sort but there are lessons to be learnt by governments across the globe. There can be no better tribute to the innocents who have died than to learn these lessons and act accordingly. The first lesson is that a committed terrorist can bring a super power down to its knees. Security is important but to secure anything from people with this level of commitment goes beyond traditional security measures. Intelligence seems to be the only viable option.

The second and more important lesson is to eschew state sponsorship of terrorism no matter what. It is rightly said – One man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter. You sponsor terrorists in the guise of freedom fighters and you will pay for it sooner rather than later. Unfortunately the stupid decisions are taken by politically motivated, short sighted buffoons while the innocent pay for it. America at one time aided and abetted the Taliban fighters when they were fighting the Soviets. Before that the Americans had already had a bitter lesson in Iran but apparently didn’t learn anything from it. These terrorists are unpredictable and consequently extremely dangerous to deal with, whether as friend or foe. Our own politicians have made the same mistake once upon a time. It is widely believed that Indira Gandhi covertly supported the Sikh separatist movement when it was in its infancy as she wanted her Congress party to rule Punjab. Later this movement grew to unimaginable size and went well beyond her control, finally costing her her life. Admittedly this was an internal matter for our country but the principle is the same.

An old Chinese proverb which I just made up says, “The starving dog will turn around and bite his master.”

Lastly, it is time the world community made common issue of terrorism. It is important to recognize terrorism for what it is irrespective of whether you support or oppose the underlying ideology. Our beloved India has been under attack from terrorists sponsored by neighbouring regimes and launched from their soil for over 20 years now. We have been crying ourselves hoarse that these states be declared terrorist for sponsoring terrorism. The US administration has constantly stonewalled these efforts. Now the same set of people seem to have struck at the heart of America. It is well known to intelligence agencies throughout the world that the problem in Kashmir is the handiwork of the Taliban and the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI – the Pakistani secret service) The serial bomb blasts in Bombay in March 1993 were organised by the same caucus.

People of the world unite in this moment of grief and make sure you don’t forget it after a few days. The outrage at what has happened is one thing that can help unite us in this war against terrorism. Make no mistake – there will continue to be insane people of all races, religion or cultures out there. We can’t stop that. What we can and should do is to stand together in identifying and eliminating the threats they cause.

America! We are with you. Together we can make a difference.

Horrific Memories
Sep 20, 2001 12:47 AM 1589 Views

Everyone in the whole world apart from some mindless, brain-washed people in the Middle East condemns what happened on the 11th Sept 2001.

The memories of the disaster in both New York and Washington will linger in my mind forever. When I watched the tv reports of the planes flying into the World Trade Centers, all I could think of was those passengers and crews on board, and what must have been going through their minds.

There will be many stories of bravery and courage of those people, and of those on the ground and in the buildings trying to get hold of loved ones and friends in a desperate attempt to be freed.

Many of the rescuers will have lost loved ones in the disaster, but they have been going on 24 hrs per day to try and find as many alive as possible.

I cannot understand the mentality of those responsible and I hope the World will find the people and bring them to justice. Surely, even the anti-Americans cannot condone this type of terrorism.

Un-Break My Heart

Though I have never been to NYC, as everyone - to me, the Twin Towers were truly a symbol of America. Last Tuesday morning I woke up to the ringing of the telephone and on the other end was my hysterical daughter. She quickly informed me that the World Trade Center, both towers and the Pentagon had been attacked by terrorists and to turn on the TV immediately.

The first images that were shown were that of a plane flying into the one tower and to say it was horrifying, well - was a total understatement. Such destruction and horror and for what reason? It is all so senseless!

My husband and I have watched CNN or other news channels every waking hour that we are home (which is nearly all of the time) and I have become heartbroken over and over again as I see so many families that are suffering, who are missing loved ones and are still frantically looking for them. My heart is also broken for all of those children who no must live without mothers or fathers, or in some cases; both. And, my heart also breaks for the children who's lives were taken at such a young age.

My heart also breaks for the backlash of hate crimes that are occurring here in the US, against people who are or even look like they are of Middle Eastern descent. What nonsense this is! These people are innocent victims as well and had nothing to do with the terrorists and yet they are being punished, just because they look different. The law-makers are starting to crack down and make these crimes as ones which they have a zero tolerance for and this is the way that it should be. I am furious that these poor people are targeted just because of their looks - I thought that America had gotten past this mentality or way of thinking. Thankfully though, even though these crimes have been occurring - I honestly DO believe that these crimes are being committed by a very few people and that most Americans are as outraged as I am with their actions.

I think that I can speak for all Americans when I say, UNBREAK MY HEART. It will take much time for the wounds to heal and for hearts to mend but for now, our hearts ARE breaking.

Of Ties and Planes and Shocking Facts - Part 1

This is an autobiography of sorts.....an eyewitness' point of view of the barbaric incident at the WTC, New York

This is NOT written by me, sent to me by a friend of a friend who was there in New York when this happened. It is just that I want to share this review with all MS friends.

I urge readers NOT to recommend this one since this is not a situation worth cashing in on.

I love the perfect tie knot. After my years in high school, where a tie was a necessity, it was a rare day that demanded a tie and by inference the perfect tie knot. On the morning of Tuesday 11th of September, I think I managed to achieve the perfect tie knot.

The World Financial Center, resplendent in its domed perfection had been the stage for a presentation by our company on September 10th and a group of us were headed back in, laptops in hand to make another presentation to a large financial services company. My little technology start-up was going up against some very large movers and shakers in the technology space and there had been much preparation and anxiety over the final presentation.

I never wake up early, ever. I am allergic to early morning sunshine. This happened in my years in college when a nocturnal existence seemed the only way to exist. On the morning of September 11th, my eyes popped open at 7 am and I decided that in order to make myself feel better, I should not just dress for success but actually eat breakfast – another first for the year.

As I jerked around in the cab down the FDR drive towards Downtown, I hit the voicemail on my cellphone and listened to people asking for work and return calls and made a short list in my head for the hour I would spend in the World Financial Center before the other members of my team arrived. One of them was a call from my one of my managers, David and I knew that I had dropped him off at the World Trade Center Marriot the day before after the previous day’s meetings.

I hit the redial and David’s hearty voice came onto the phone with some unfortunate news. He went on to tell me about how two of our group, Bassel and Steve were sitting in an airport with their flights pushed out to a 12 noon arrival from a 9 am arrival. David said that that Paul, the coordinator of our meeting was now making calls to reschedule the meeting with the company at the WTC and that I should just sit tight and wait on a new time.

I looked down at my perfectly knotted tie and knew that I was looking far too good to go back home. I thanked David and told him to keep me posted on how things were shaping up and decided, in a move that changed my life to keep heading downtown to have my breakfast, at the World Trade Center instead. I remember thinking to myself – ''have cellphone, will travel.''

The cab pulled off as I continued to listen to voicemail and chugged along West Street. Above me the shadow of the mighty downtown buildings were dwarfed by the shadows created by those greatest of New York duoliths – the World Trade Center Twins.

As I leaned back to shut my eyes for a minute, my cabbie, in typical New York style overshot World Trade 2, as I opened my mouth to tell him to pull over, we both heard a delicate thrumming. The sound was not as loud as people would expect. The first plane, to my eyes, seemed to float in, almost delicately, the twin engines rumbling almost ashamedly as it impacted the building above me. I watched out the window in shock as above me the engines burst into white-hot radiance along the upper side of the World Trade Center 2. The cab jumped, just once and then there was silence. Money seemed to fly into my hand and I thrust the money into my cabbie’s hands. I pulled my bags out and walked towards the bridge right by World Trade Center 2, about 30 feet from the building itself. My eyes were glued to the great smoking crater in the side of World Trade Center 2. There was a strange quiet to the scene after this first impact. There was no panic in the street. People walked around, slightly dazed talking about how they had seen the plane or asking what had happened and why the building was sending plumes of liquid-dark smoke into the glorious summer sky.

The side of the building was not raining down debris. What was coming down was paper, reams of paper, great streaming curlicues of shredded paper. There was absolutely no sign of human presence at first. The building shedded paper blood and leaked flame from the great wound but all of us saw nothing that spoke to the human knot in the great building-city.

As I got out and stared at the great wound, my phone flew into my hand begging attention and with a start I remembered that David was still in the World Trade Center Marriot. I thumbed through my numbers and hit the redial again my eyes straying back up to the great inferno. David got on the phone and without waiting words poured out of my body – of planes hitting buildings and burning and bombs and the world trade center and panic. David listened and I felt disbelief and thankfully he said he would move and went to do so. I looked back up and the side of the building gaped at me, lost and hurt.

Due to limitations I am continuing the rest of this review in a sequel. The contents haven't been edited to fit in order to retain the essence of this horrific act

At the cross roads

After the barbaric incident that shook the world , I am having nightmares, every day I get up to think that whatever happened was not real. I have come to terms with reality

The question that I keep asking is are we really humans? The jungle is a better place I suppose. People think by spreading terror they can prove a point . What are they trying to prove ? what was the motive of the attack?

The people who were unrelated to the said cause / if any? got killed, leaving behind misery, despair and crying near and dear ones- Is it worth it?

What kind of examples are we setting for the coming generations?

The efforts of all the people who sweated out for making those twin towers have all gone down the drain. The New York skyline looks lifeless without those twin towers.

My rating for New York is the best but for the incident it is the worst to have happened.

I think with the fast paced age people want solutions to their problem in an instant.

Whatever may be the cause – be it right of determination or independence it is always better to get ones view point in a non-violent way.

Our own Mahatma Gandhi has shown the way.

My views are that the whole cause of the problem lies in dividing the world on the lines of religion, ethnicity, race, colour, language etc.

When the road to salvation is one, heaven is one, hell is one, world is one, universe is one, earth is one, GOD is one,

Why cant there be one religion- mankind ?

A world with no borders.

A world full of peace and harmony.

I presume as long as we have jealousy in us we just cant have peace.

Do I sound like a preacher – well these are the thoughts that came to my mind after the incident .

My condolences to all the people who lost their near and dear ones and to the people of America.

May God give you the resolve to come out of this, stronger, powerful and may the world become a better place to live without terror and fanatism.

I never thought that one day I will write about something which has breaked million of people's hearts. I am talking about the disaster which shakked everyone one, the lose of people of the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

I feel it is not the act of a human being b'cos human being knows only to love and care for others. It's has to be act of Devil. Who did not think that he is not only destroying World Trade Center and Pentagon but also have destroyed people's life and people's faith in humanity.

It has changed everyone for good and for bad. For good, now people have learned the true meaning of helping and caring for one another. It's nice to see how people come forward in order to search for lost ones or even give their support. They say when people face problem, God send his messenger in order to help us, it really happened when a old women was searching for her husband, a young guy gave his support by not accepting his failure and also succeeded in searching her husband and united the old love birds. Way to go my friend. I bow to you....

And for Bad, now people's life is changed, some have lost their love one and have to learn to live without them :-(* I hope and pray God gives them power and strength to overcome their fear and sorrow.

Who are these Terrorist who destroy people in the name of Religion. No religion teaches u destroy one another. Religion only teaches u to love one another and care for each other. Children are opening their eyes seeing bullets and bombs. They open their mouth by their first sentence to ruin the world. They learn to walk holding guns. Is this future of the children who were innocent when they born and bcom a dangerous terrorist. When will the terrorist stop hurting people, when these people will learn to live and let live???

I am thankful to MouthShut for their deepest sympathies and condolences offered to the victims and their families in this time of sorrow.I appreciate their thoughtfulness in sharing their grief with the world.

September 11, 2001, will for ever be remembered as a day of terror ! This day, suicidal terrorists turned four commercial airliners into passenger - laden missiles, unleashing the deadliest unforeseen attack against the United States.

This unprecedented strike was bold and meticulously planned. The culprits have not been known as yet. A grim President George W.Bush , in a televised address from the oval Office said, '' Thousands of lives were suddenly ended.'' A terrible tragedy, which has turned the financial centre of U.S. in shambles and it's military nerve centre in flames along with thousands of people who lost their lives. The horrified citizens of U.S. are wondering what more devastation might rain down on them from the skies!

Some 50, 000 people worked in the World Trade Centre. So far, the death toll is believed to be 10 to 20 thousand. In addition, it is feared that 300 firefighters who first reached the scene had died in rescue efforts at the trade centre. Dozens of police officers are also missing.

Thousands were injured in New York alone, when the twin towers of the World Trade Centre exploded. New York skylines are still dominated by smoke.

Canada's major television networks cleared their program schedules yesterday to give the terrorist coverage. Actually, there is no one in this country that doesn't potentially have friends or colleagues who are involved in the story. After all, America is our neighbour and not a far - off spot on the globe!

Many flights have been diverted to Canada after yesterday's attacks. About 200 planes. Canadian authorities cancelled all out - bound flights yesterday, to make space for U.S planes and passengers. There are no flights today. Passengers are stranded as tourists . Canada has tightened the security as you can imagine.

Canada has promised to offer military assistance to U.S. against terrorism. People are donating blood for the victims here. Actually, this attack is not on Pentagon! It is an attack on humanity. This terrific act should be condemned.

What's going to be next? People are afraid. Nobody knows what's going to take place on this planet ! It seems there is a lot of pressure in the White House, as to what has to be done. President Bush is confident that they are going to do thorough investigation and the culprits will be punished.

At this point, if we can do something, it is to pray for the families of victims . Only God can see them get through their grief .Let us all join together, whereever we are and offer a silent prayer to God.Let us not witness any more tragedy of this kind in future.Let us all live in PEACE !

I LOVE NY
Sep 12, 2001 07:37 PM 1953 Views

I am sick and disgusted with the terrorist attacks on our sites in New York and Washington. How dare they attack our landmarks? I'll tell you how they dare. They believe the United States is spineless. Well, I certainly hope we open their eyes to the fact that we will NOT stand for this. Enough is enough. They have attacked our ships, our embassies and now our landmarks. I pray that our government finds these fiends and punishes them to the fullest extent. Yes, I hope they punish the governments who aid and abet these terrorists too. Sorry, but I'm damn mad!!

I also would be remiss if I didn't ask that we all pray for those who have perished and for their families. I must thank God that my family was spared. They work all around the World Trade Center and I spent a highly nervous number of hours until I heard from all of them.

We must weep over this horrible event!!

Sorry, if I sound meanspirited, but this act was the epitome of meanspiritedness.
