A good but not Best Airways

I have flown on Garuda on flights between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta and on the Pekan Baru-Singapore sector.


On all occasions I have flown economy class and generally have not been too impressed. The aircraft fleet although modernised in recent years is not as modern as, eg, SIA or MAS.


I cannot vouch for standards of maintenance but friends of mine who are aircraft engineers do not place the Indonesian airline at the top of the league.


The in flight service is satisfactory rather than outstanding and the cuisine tolerable rather than distinguished.


The seating arrangements were OK and there is a reasonable amount of leg room. The flight attendants are courteous, smiling and attentive to passenger needs.and I consider generally the in flight service to be fairly good. Punctuality does seem to be a problem-a number of flights to Singapore from Indonesia were subject to delays.

Flown Garuda for short range flights maybe about 5-10 times. Never had any gripes until I found myself on a flight towards Amsterdam.


Flight was delayed for 2 hours. No communication from airline whatsoever, just the usual please be patient trip. Later found out 2 hours later that one of the engine had blown/went out from the plane's trip from Jakarta where it has come from to pick up Singaporean passengers. Another 2 hours more of delay before we were told that we were being shuttled to a local hotel where we were put up for the night. After 6 hours of long wait..we found ourselves queueing for the keys to our rooms at 5 am in the morning. Great. In total, flight was delayed at least 10 hours.


On the 13 hour flight, service was mediocre and the seats were in desperate need of some maintenance. But that was just superficial details. Mid way through the flight, there was a long queue for the toilets (about 10 odd passengers waiting in line) suddenly, one air stewardess grabbing her toiletries bag, cut infront of the queue, mumbling some excuse that she wanted to clean up the toilet and just barged in to the toilet in front of another passenger while the rest of us just looked on. She exited the toilet about 15 mins later, all made up and trust me... the toilet did not seem cleaned up at all.


I stood there thinking to myself...if ever we were going to meet with some unfortunate incident. One thing for sure. I will not be the first priority of the crew and will definitely not be the first one to be safely off the plane. In fact, I'd dare say the crew will safe themselves first!


Have no decided no offer is worth that kind of treatment. Have even paid more for my upcoming flights just to not fly with this airline.


To top it off, apparently Garuda is named the airline with the more recorded flight accidents. Future passengers, beware.


Garuda, You are ours or theirs ?

Garuda Indonesian Airways is the Flag Carrier of Indonesia, which is my second home. I had the good fortune of living in this beautiful country with my family for more than four years, and whose language I can read, write and speak with considerable fluency. Whose food we relish, whose music we like, whose dances we long to see again and again, and where we learnt the values of secularism practised at every level of society. Indonesia is our friendly neighbour.


I have used Garuda many times. What it was during 1970-73, and what it is today ? It is a modern Airline with courteous and pretty hostesses, delicious food and excellent service. I can say without any hesitation that it is even better than KLM its partner Airline.


Garuda, according to the Hindu mythology, is the carrier of Lord Vishnu. In Bali, Indonesia, Lord Vishnu is also worshipped. Hence the title of my Review: Garuda, you are ours or theirs ?


Once in 1995, I was in Bali, and arrived Denpasar late to catch a domestic Garuda flight to Jakarta, for onward travel to Singapore and home. I missed that flight. I went to the Counter and presented my ticket. The pretty girl at the Counter could know from my ticket that it was booked by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She asked me ''Where is your baggage?'' and spoke to some one that the plane should not take off without me. Then she turned to me and said, ''Sir, there is a direct flight to Singapore coming from Australia. Kindly go through the VIP Gate and board the plane. I am sending your baggage. Please don't worry.'' I followed her advise and to my utter surprise found myself in the first class. The plane was waiting for me to take off. It took off. I relaxed with a refreshing drink, followed by a dinner with Indonesian Soup, Fried Rice, and what not. All to my liking. I was in Singapore in good time. How many Airlines are there to help the passenger in a crisis? Garuda is !

Better than it's so-called reputation

Having flown Garuda at least 12-15 times in the past 5 years, I can only highly recommend this carrier for it's service quality and the safety/efficiency of it's product.


The aircraft are safe and are being serviced to my knowledge by Lufthansa (it won't get much better than this anyway!).


Most impressive to me was the very friendly inflight staff. You were hampered and pampered and really taken care of.


I know of Garuda's reputation in Asian countries..but maybe the other carriers there just make more noise about the same basic things that should be normal and Garuda doesn't invest so much money in telling everyone about the basic things as the ''others'' do?


I recommend flying Garuda anytime to anyone. I had never a negative or even slightly bad experience flying with them. They are efficient, punctual and friendly. All what I need to have a comfortable long-distance flight.


Maybe they should abolish their smokers-areas - that is the only critic.


Try them - they are good.

Garuda Indonesia airlines does not enjoy a particularly good reputation in the Asian region where there are a number of exceptionally good airlines such as Cathay Pacific, SIA, Air India, MAS, and Japan Air Lines.


I have flown on Garuda on flights between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta and on the Pekan Baru-Singapore sector. On all occasions I have flown economy class and generally have not been over impressed.The in flight magazine is not a particularly good read and the in flight entertainment,in my opinion, not up to the high standards of,say, Singapore Airlines.That airline has a wonderful selection of computer gains,movies, CNN news and other excellent forms of entertainment.

The in flight service is best described as satisfactory rather than outstanding and the cuisine tolerable rather than distinguished. The seating arrangements were OK and there is a reasonable amount of leg room. The flight attendants are courteous,smiling and attentive to passenger needs.and I consider generally the in flight service to be fairly good.However,there is not a great deal of reading material carried on board and the duty free selection is a bit limited.


Punctuality does seem to be a problem-a number of flights to Singapore from Indonesia were subject to delays. I also experienced delays on the return leg it is rumoured the flight crew often spend a bit too much time in Singapore doing their duty free shopping.


Ground service too is not too hot. Although the ground staff are courteous enough in their dealings with passengers they do not always seem to be as professional as those of some other airlines,especially other Asian airlines.


In sum, to be frank given a wide choice of intra Asian carriers I would not opt for Garuda Indonesia and even on long-haul flights to US or Western Europe from SE Asia, my preferred choice would not be the Indonesian flag carrier.
