Hi guys,

I would like to share my own experience about Gandhigram university. Because I am a former student of this university.

I have completed MCA in this university.

It has many academic programs such as Ph.d, M.phill, Post Graduate for four years, PG diploma for two years, Post diploma, five years integrated courses, Ug courses for three years, Professional programs with various semesters, Kasual kendra skill baesd programs.

Administration is very perfect and its only based on merit admissions. steps taken for students well and growth is really nice.

Extra curricular activities such as photography, typing institute, coaching classes for Interviews and competitive exams, sports for giving chances to student for proving their skills based on knowledge and activities.

Alumini network is very enthusiasic. because we are having big network as former students attending every year a alumini program for upcoming students.

I am really proud to be a part of this university

Growing education in rural areas of India
Jul 07, 2015 02:07 PM4236 Views

Gandhigram Rural University was mainly established with the purpose to promote education among children of rural area for their upliftment and I literally felt it while attending a college seminar of one of the college which is affiliated to this University. It has branches almost in entire India which is playing very crucial role in promoting education among rural children by not only covering the cities but also the rural and village areas as well. There is also subsidy scheme and other facilities to ease them with the education motive.

The education model starts from basic to science and technology with modern infrastructure facilities including web based and video based learning. E-learning facility is on a development phase. Computer skill is mandatory to learn here by every woman who is the part of this University. They have also high degree courses like PhD, Post Graduate, M Phil etc and the enrollments are increasing every year which is a positive signal in India’s growth contribution by women. Even extracurricular activities are also promoted here like sports, music, dance, art etc. Some of its students have represented at State level also. Discipline is uncompromised.

The University is also good and impressive in structure which is scattered over a large area with sufficient number of Professors. Some are from corporate background as well, including Government officials whose visit is as a guest lecturer. The University is on a high growth mode with rigorous change in education model as it is also supported by many NGOs of India.

Gandhigram Teaches you how to live

Gandhigram Rural Institue is situated around 10KMS from Dindigul, around 65 from Madurai and 100Km from Kodaikanal. Its surrounded by the Sirumalai hills of the (i think) kodai hill section)

The story goes like this 'During the late forties, when GandhiJi was going around the country mobilising people to fight agaist the british, he got down at a spot near the sirumalai hills, and rested for a while, and Gandhigram was born'

GRI was the child of T S soundram and G Ramachandran. Its a Deemed University and boasts of courses in all sort of subjects.

The admission is thru a nation wide enterance exam, and the reservation is 50% (Unline in Tamil Nadu where its almost 80%). So if you have the merit, you get in.

Gandhigram offers courses (Bachelors and Masters) in:

1.Rural Development & Administration

2.Communicative English

3.Animal Husbandary

4.Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics

5.Computer Sciences (Surprised??)

The locality is fit for anyone, in fact, the ambience of the place starts moulding you for life the moment you set ur foot at Gandhigram.

The only noice you can hear inside the campus would be the chirping of birds and occasional sound of a train passing by.

The accomodation is decent for men and woman and the food is vegetarian. You can suppliment your hostel food with other stuff like pickles, jams etc which are produced inside the university itself (by poor unemployed women, who have nothing else to do)

Students from all parts of India study here, from kerala to Manipur. Its quite popular with students from African countries who are looking for great but cheap education.

For a coveted master's degree in computers, around 1000 people write the test for (30) seat I would tell you reason why:

1.Good infrastructure - Around 60 machines, with all kinds of s/w and a dedicated staff. Its open 24 hrs.

2.Sylabus - The sylabus is ahead of times, 4 years back I head they had Java in their curriculum

3.Management -Directly managed by DOE and is funded by them

4.Status - Recently got a Five Star() unversity status.(By NACC)

5.Inexpensive -Cheap is a understatement. The entire fees for the Master course in Computers would set u back by around Seven Thousand (yes its only 7000 Rs) a year!!!! that's including food. (Please check the latest fee structure)

Moreover, the entire university is a close knit community, we used to meet each other for Pongal celebrations, Onam celebrations and Xmas.

Lots of clubs are operations, Literary, Quiz, and Trekking(And Sirumalai is a haven for Trekkers) which becomes quite interesting when people from various states, countries and background come together.

The Computer science dept organizes a yearly compu fest called interFace which is attended by around 30-40 colleges around the region.

Gandhian Way of Life

The I want to touch upon this subject seperately. Gandhigram will change your life. I was changed profoundly by the Institute and the people with whom I interacted. Wearing Khadi is encouraged even though its not a mandate. Cleaning the premises, also neighbouring villages is undertaken. Post-Graduate students takes free classes during free time, the idea is to care about every human being. I cant express how I feel...

Everyday is a Festival at Gandhigram

Gandhigram was quite different in 1955, when I was there to be trained in Social education, than what it is to-day. As a Central Deemed University it has earned a name for inculcating Gandhian values in her students. The Sirumalai Hills provides the back drop and the beautiful Sanjivee Hills radiates bright sunshine all throughout the day. Dr. Soundram Ramachandran, a daughter of the famous Madurai TVS family, founded this great institution, with the able assistance of her educationist husband Dr. Govindan Ramachandran, whowas for sometime a Private secretary to Mahatma Gandhi. She is affectionately called 'Amma' and he 'Mama'.

The Gandhigram Trust has Grapes (Anabisahi) cultivation. Its Khadi production and sales are to the tune of several lakhs. Go to any Khadi Bhavan and you will get Gandhigram sarees in different designs and colours. It is only 30 miles from the Temple City of Madurai. In those days standing at the Gandhigram Gate, one could adjust his/her watch by the punctual movement of TVS Buses. Swami Viswananda was there to teach us Religion. Achutan Nayar from Kerala was our Deputy Director. He is no more. Rev. R. R. Keithan from Batalagundu was teaching us rural development.

The famous Gandhian Economist from Thirumangalam Kalupatti, J. C. Kumarappa was teaching us Rural Economics. For me Gandhigram was a turning point in my life. Here I switched over from Electronics to Social Education and Rural Development. I have never looked back since then. Leelavathy, whose Deaf and Dumb School in Chennai is in everybody's lips was my class mate. We are in touch with each other. Another class mate Leela Nambiar, who was a special friend of mine, is somewhere in Coimbatore. I have lost contact with her.

Our music teacher N. Shyamala is also no more. Lalithambika, who was then at the Thambittotam post-Basic School, lives at Ambathurai with her artist husband Srinivasan. The Shantiniketan product J. M. Dutta, who was teaching us Rabindrasangeet, married Amma-Mama's adopted daughter Kanaka Lakshmi and is living very close to Gandhigram. My son-in-law Dr. L. Raja, a product of the Deemed University teaches there Adult Education, and he, together with his wife Kalpana and their daughter Kavery live at Ambathurai, near the Railway station 'Ambathurai for Gandhigram'.

Well, this much now. Gandhigram, I am really proud of you, and I say 'LONG LIVE GANDHIGRAM'.
