I feel this review is:
I have a respect and a weakness too, for the books that were written by people a long time earlier. These are the actual timeless classics, which have been able to remain as people’s favorites even after years.
Friends and Lovers was first published in 1947. I get amazed to notice how brilliantly authors like Helen Maclnness could think about plots and characters back at that era. Although it has not been deemed as a superb classic, yet I consider it to be equivalent to that of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
The author gives to us the love story between David and Penelope, who fall in love at the first sight, but are ridiculed by both the families for it. The secret meetings between the two lovers, the scenes of dating and acceptance are written with intense color. Beautiful descriptions about the Scottish coast and the society of that era- are all well engraved in this classic novel.
Anyone with genuine interest in Classic English literature would love this book.
