Frankfurt the business & Financial capital of Germany which is also know for its futuristic skyline(similar to Mahattan) and the busiest German airport.Located on river Mainz Frankfurt is home to many of the important institutation of Germany like European central Bank, Germany Stock Exchange & also home to many of important trade fairs like auto show, book fair. The city has some of the highest sky scrapers of Europe next to well mainted old buildings.

Well...I am a desi student studying in sweden and I decided to go there last summer as I was rather impressed by the towers and the glitter of this so called ''mainhattan'' when I flew over it for the 1st time.

To be rather honest with u guys it is like a bankers city with the downtown looking more american than european; with glass towers, swanky restaurants and the like.

However once u are done with the somewhat awe inspiring (atleast according to european standards), uve hardly got anything else to do. So what u end up is the museum or the zoo. And the summers can either be wet or can be a lil hot for europe (30+ in june,july).

The city thrives on exhibitions and chances are that if u are a businessman, u might have probably one on ur mind too.

Thats it what it has. So I decided to leave for weisbaden from where we went to a small picturisque town where we stayed in a typical european village and enjoyed steak with the locals as they had a small gathering.

So if u want to be here for more than 2-3 days chances are u may get bored and if its winter than its better not to go there as there'll be snow all around making it even more boring for a leasure seeking person.

The party streets

Frankfurt called me in October , the time I was with Lufthansa , scheduled to fly out on a month-long gruelling training session to Germany .. along with 03 equally wicked colleagues of mine ... he he he .. well , we were sure in for some great times together .. The flight to Frankfurt was the best part of the trip , almost .. the class and elegance of flying business class on Lufthansa , has no comparison .. Well fed and well taken care of , the first thing that hit us when we landed at Frankfurt , was the HUUUUUUUUUge airport . If you are the kind who has lived mostly on the Delhi , Mumbai airports , this is something that is definitely gonna elicit a word of appreciation and admiration from u .. loads of words actually !! The next thing to hit us was the cold .. it was just so damn cold .. we were shivering outright . It so happened that , the weather had been predicted as warm and the day before we landed , it snowed ... we were down on our knees in the rest rooms ... yes , puking .. it was that cold ... As we came out on the road , we could see the clean gleaming buses all lined up in neat rows . As we were given official transportation , travel was not really such a bother .. Jam packed schedules , weekends were just for us . We planned our trip to Frankfurt and very smartly landed up at the airport , to board a train from there . In Germany , this is one amazing facility , from the airport , you get the cab , the bus , the train , the metro , the flight of course ... anything .... We got on the train and it was one beautiful ride , through the city , with its modern constructions , its wide well-maintained roads , the beautiful colours of flowers u saw on entire road stretches .. no pollution no dust , we could wear the same white shirt , without using the laundry service for 06 days at a stretch ... it is so pollution-free . At Frankfurt , the one thing we realised was that , water was anyday much much more expensive than beer . . u literally had to shell out your major wealth for a bottle of water . As we came out of the station to the streets , music greeted us all over . We turned around in amazement , to realise that , in Frankfurt , u dont have to go find a place to party , the streets are literally turned to clubs and pubs . The Frankfurt market is one place , which , when u are in Germany , u definitely must visit . The sheer merry-making and party spirit of the people is gonna keep u cheered up for days .. The entire footpath is taken up by musicians and performers , some of them quite famous , who perform there for free .. if thier music touches u , you can give them some money , else just enjoy the performance . There are people playing the flute , the drums , bass , guitar , saxophone , there are live DJ's , there are strippers , there are dancers , you just name it , they are all there .. and the beauty is the way all this gels together .. it is an experience of its kind , one you will never forget . Do shake a leg or two with the DJ , its absolute fun , we continued through three hours of cheering and sheer madness ... Remember one thing though , the Germans do NOT look upon outsiders as friends , so please steer clear of the punks , no matter how shocking their hair or outfit might look , dont , and I mean , DONT turn around to look at them ... its the sure-shot way of walking into trouble . A very famous store in Frankfurt is the WoolWorth , that is what we were told and felt as well . Five or six huge floors of shopping , it houses some of the most sought-after names in products like cosmetics , clothing , accessories , electronics , furnishings ... the restaurant at WoolWorth is one where you should go in for the meat balls , its a kind of meat dish with spinach stuffing , romancing the most delectable species of cheese on earth .. the taste will never leave your taste buds , mark my words , u are gonna crave for it for life . This one recipe I have not yet been able to figure out .. SIMPLY AWESOME AND MOST RECOMMENDED !!! Do shop for some clothes , shoes , bags , belts , books ( if u please ) , but try and avoid jewellery , the variety is much better in our country , if u ask me . Moving out of the main market , grab a sandwich or pasta or some other food and drinks at any of the roadside cafes , this is something you wish our own Delhi , or for that matter , India , would adopt more freely ... its such fun , sitting out on the pavement under the shades , smelling the heady aroma rushing at you .... The entire day can be spent at the Frankfurt market , strolling around and losing yourself in the mad crowd , and dont be surprised if u hear loud Indian music , mundian to bachke , or shakin an a** , doin the rounds , Germans are crazy about the Indian hip-hop mixes .... All in all , a great place to be , if u are friends , but if alone , its a pity , Germans are the least friendly and the most snobbish and cold mix I have seen . But check out the city , u are bound to like it for its organised culture and sheer pollution free environment .. till then , adieus ..... and danke ..

We used our Air Canada points to fly from Victoria, with a connection in Vancouver to Frankfurt.

I have connected through the Airport a number of times but never saw Frankfurt. On this trip I wanted to see the city.

We took a taxi to our hotel. We stayed Inter-Continental Hotel, (rated four star), because it was on the edge of the Main River. Many of the Museums are here.

Frankfurt is a pretty city with the Main River. I was surprised that the population was just over 700,000 people, (and 1/4 are foreigners), because I had expected it to be a larger city.

I found that most of the people we met spoke English and that is great because people in Canada only speak one or two languages. The problem is that when they are talking about someone they don't like they speak German and most tourists don't understand them, (but I speak enough German to understand what they were saying.

We arrived here after then National Election and there was no Chancellor. The locals were wondering if former Chancellor Gerhard Schoreder or Angela Merkel would be the first to form a coalition Government.

The main shopping street is Zeil Strase. It was nice to browse through the Goethenstrasee and Ehinger Schwarz area but we couldn’t afford to buy the designer label mechanize that the shops sell. I go to Hertie Strase to buy chocolates. Where ever we went we saw prostitutes and drugs being used. During the day we saw a lot of police but at night we never saw one.

Every night we ate out at a restaurant in the Norden area. The restaurants serve both local and International food. We were told before we left home that we must try some Handkase mit Musik. This is made with a round cheese that has been marinated in oil and vinegar. After you eat it you will here ''musik'', (music), coming out of you as you fart the rest of the day!

We had a brew or two during the Octoberfest celebrations. You will see tens every where and you had have a variety of German beers and tasted some wurst, (sausage), and frankfurters, (hot dogs). We sat at long tables with strangers and clinked our mugs as we toasted one another by saying, '' Prost''!

In Roemer area we saw some lovely older homes that were built with clay and wood.

We bought a museumsufer ticket , (25 Euros each), at the Sadelsches Kunstinstitut Gallery, (the first attraction we went to), and this saved us half the price to get into the other museums. This Gallery is huge and we saw their collection of Durers, Rubens, Van Eycks and Vermeers. They are closed on Monday but open the other 6 days. They open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 pm on every day but Wednesday, (8 p.m.).

My favorite museum was the Senchkenberg. It an archaeologist dream that is filled with dinosaurs and mammoths bones. The displays were similar to the Turelle Museum in Alberta, Canada, but much smaller.

We went to see the house that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lived in. He's Frankfurt's most famous person.

Dom St. Brthomaus Cathedral is where the German Kings were crowned.

Charlemagne built a fort here and we went to see it. A lot of it was destroyed during WW II but they are now reconstructing it.

When you are eating out your bill will include a service charge but most people tip their server at least 5% more. If you are sitting at the Bar you tip the bartender at least 5% of the bill. At the hotels the bellhops should be given 1 Euro for every bag they carry and we always leave the maids a 1 Euro for every day we stayed at the hotel. Taxi drivers are tipped 10%.

I'm glad we saw Frankfurt but I wouldn't go back because the people we met weren't to nice and gave me the feeling they thought they were better than we were. I guess that's why Frankfurt is not as popular as a tourist destination as other German cities.

We went to the Hauptbahnhof Train Station to leave Frankfurt for...to be continued.

Thanks for reading my review.

Frankfurt Germany
Frankfurt - no, region - yes!
Aug 30, 2003 02:29 PM4043 Views

Hi, I live in the Frankfurt region and there are a few things I would like to say about the place. If you come to Frankfurt as a tourist, you will be rather disappointed, because the city is not as great as many people imagine. It is an important town for financial things, but not really interesting to see for tourists. But the region around Frankfurt has quite a lot to offer.

Here are a few places that are interesting to see:

In Frankfurt:

The Roemer - it is the main place of interest for tourists, not very big, but very beautiful, a place surrounded by old houses built in a special traditional way with wood and clay. Close by you can find the Dom, an old and nice church, most people wouldn't expect such a church in a place like Frankfurt.

Also close by is the Eiserner Steg, a bridge for pedestrians only, from where you have a nice view on the town and the river Main. From there you can also go on a boat trip to the region.

Senckenberg Museum - a museum for archaeology, very impressive as they have dinosaur and mammoth skelletons there.

Also if you are interested in parks, try the Palmengarten, very nice botanic garden!

If you go to Sachsenhausen, try the cider there (Apfelwein - applewine), the region is very famous for this beverage. Also try some of the other specialities like Sauerkraut, Handkaese mit Musik or the famous Brezels.

Seeing Frankfurt will not take you more than a day! Be careful in the night and in certain regions as Frankfurt is not the safest town at all....especially around the mainstation you shouldn't go for a walk!!!!! And Frankfurt is quite expensive, so check the prices before entering a restaurant or bar...

A little outside is Hoechst, go there on a Tuesday, Friday or Saturday morning and walk over the market, very nice! Also there are many of those typical old houses and a little castle, very nice for a walk! They also have one of the oldest churches of Germany in Hoechst. Hoechst is easily reached by tube! You will need 2 hours to see it.

Outside Frankfurt:

The Rhine - perfect for a boat trip. You shouldn't miss places like Bacharach or Ruedesheim and enjoy seeing the many many castles built at the river. Very very beautiful area and very famous for its wine, the region is full of vineyards which makes it really pictoresque! Take a train from Frankfurt to get there and ask a Frankfurt tourist info to help you plan your trip. You need 1 day for this. You can also stay at one of the castles for the night and have a medieval dinner!

Koenigstein - The ruin of an old castle, very nice to see and also good for children as they have underground tunnels, perfect for hide & seek and also a little scary, even for adult visitors as you don't see anything in them! Also reachable by tube. 3 hours-trip.

Seligenstadt - Medieval little town full of old houses and the second oldest church in Europe. They also have an old monastery with a very beautiful garden. You forget time while walking through Seligenstadt and they have lots of great restaurants and don't forget to try the Eis Kaiser's icecream! Getting there is a little more complicated as there are not many trains to Seligenstadt. Ask at the station how to get there best, you will probably have to take a train to Hanau and then change to a Seligenstadt train. From Frankfurt it will take you an hour to get there or half an hour by car via the A3 highway. Half a day-trip.

Heidelberg - about 1 hour by car from Frankfurt. Also a very old and nice place, very popular for tourists, old streets, an old castle and the Tingstaette on the hill. 1 day trip.

Title : City of Beer!
Sep 03, 2002 10:03 AM2931 Views

Frankfurt, Germany was the starting point of our trip to Europe. August 2002 was the month we chose to visit this place and have no regrets.I would call this the most organised country and I highly recommend anyone beginning their tour of Europe with Germany. The Germans are highly efficient and they all speak English. We take the language for granted because we speak it well (no modesty here!) but as you go more towards the south of Europe, you will realise that not everyone takes a fancy to the English language. With a highly organised railway system, it was not a difficult task to find our way from the Frankfurt airport to the Frankfurt main railway station. Hotels all round the station makes it easy to find lodgings. There is even a hostel close by which works our much cheaper. The dining in Frankfurt is so easy as there are little shops all over the place.A quest for water will reveal to you that a large can of beer is so much more cheaper! It is more easy on the pocket to grab a sandwich off one of the stands than to sit in a restaurant and dine in. My stay lasted for two days there. Since I have put forth all the positive points, here are some of the negative. The Germans behaved like the sun rose and set from their backyards (and thats putting it very nicely), they were rude and treated us like our money was not worth their time. They were helpful though and I couldn't wait to get out of that place. I am not saying all Germans are like that, we were treated like royalty in some places. A word of caution as well. The weekend i.e. Saturday and Sunday is one where all hell breaks loose! The streets of Frankfurt turns into a veritable den of sex and debauchery. The streets are not safe. A short walk behind the main buildings outside Frankfurt Main will forever be an eye-opener to me. Prostitution is the worlds oldest profession, hence it cannot really shock anyone with the happenings down that street. What was sad was the drugs that was being consumed openly on the streets. Suffice to say, one does not feel safe in that place at any time.I advise caution. Even the cops that patrol the streets from Monday to Saturday afternoon are nowhere in sight once the revelry begins.

Land of Frankfurter

Frankfurter originated from Frankfurt, also known as City of Banks. It is one of the major cities in Germany. One can call it as ‘City of Fairs’, ‘City of Science’, ‘City of Museums’. Full name of the city is Frankfurt am Main

How to reach Frankfurt from India

From Mumbai, one can go by Lufthansa or Delta. You may choose Emirates too. Advantage is that one can go to Dubai, stay a day or two there then fly to Frankfurt. I like the food of Emirates but no Champaign. Cost almost same. Cheapest may be the Delta.

Frankfurt is one of the biggest and busiest airports in the world. They cover huge area and highest in Europe. It is also a transport hub mainly due to Lufthansa. From Mumbai one reaches there early in the morning and if you are lucky to have a window seat then you can enjoy the aerial view of Frankfurt. One can see too many aircraft coming from different direction. Very efficient control by ATC-Frankfurt has made the sky very safe. According to my knowledge, in recent years, no mishap has taken place.

Immigration staff is equally efficient and friendly (unlike London) and no one faces problems if you have a valid visa.

It is huge airport with too many terminals. One need not worry at all to come out of the airport if one follows the signs. After collection of the luggage there is Red and Green Channel as usual. I never found anyone there standing in queue. Just walkout and you get the Taxi.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Accommodation – Not very costly. One even finds accommodation for Euro 20 without attached bath. However, such accommodation, away from railway station, may be costly due to traveling by taxi (hiring Taxi is a costly affair). Traveling by train is cheaper and network is quite good. In some cases, you may have to choose either tram or bus. Trams are quite fast unlike Kolkata.
For $ 60, very decent accommodation is available in decent area, breakfast included.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Food - Have you ever tried Frankfurters? It is a sausage much bigger than what we get from Mafco. It is made out of cured, well smoked Pork and Beef and must be some more ingredients. Many believe frankfurters were first made in Germany during the middle age. It is also known as hot dogs, red hot, and wieners in America. Frankfurters in buns are a favorite American food.

I am not much delighted by German food. They consume lot of potatoes. Lot of green vegetable and fruits are available. I normally go for Burger, Pizza, Chicken fries and most my favorite is KEBAB. Kebab is a Turkish dish with lot of beef, one serving is good enough for lunch or dinner with a bottle of beer. There are too many Chinese restaurants like kebab corners. There are Thai, Indian, and Pakis too. Pakis are relatively cheap. Indian restaurants are quite costly.

There are verities of bread and other bakery products but white bread (that we consume in India) is easy to find.

I have seen one Indian grocery shop selling Indian Hair Oil, Bengali magazine like “Anandolok”, Rasgulla etc. All Indian spices are available and some vegetables. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of that place. It is within 2 km of Frankfurt main railway station.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Drink – Germany is land of beer lovers. There are too many verities from different region of Germany. Same is the case with Wine. Cost of drinking water and beer is almost same.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sight seeing – There too many organized tour from one hour to three hours. There are tours like “Nightlife of Frankfurt,” “Vine Yard Tour,” Boat excursions on River Mine is very interesting because landscape is quite different than India.

There are too many museums; some are even manage by individual, families. There are about sixty museum and exhibition halls. They range from small special collection to universally oriented art museums.

A visit to Main Tower’s observation platform (about 200 m) is must to get view of Frankfurt and the surrounding.

Frankfurt is also known as “City of Fairs.” At least two major international fairs organized in a year. These fairs are due to the influence of high-level commercial activity and advantage is geographical location of Frankfurt.

There are tours for seeing nearby places of Frankfurt.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shopping – I prefer to go to Hertie, mainly for chocolate. Electronic goods are nowadays available in India at a lesser cost. In Hertie sometime, one may get Audio CDs, mainly old favorites, at a much-discounted price but it is not a regular feature. Good woolen verities are available mainly Jackets. In the airport there are too many duty free shops, carry your wine quota from there and one may go for expensive cosmetic too.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A decent budget tour of ten days may cost you about INR 0.10 million.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FYI – Lufthansa or Delta offers a free domestic flight against return ticket to Mumbai. So, one can plan a trip to place like Berlin or Munich.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Caution – Walking on the street at night is not very safe. One may encounter a nasty drug addict like some of my colleague.
