What Women Want, Courage under Fire, Marvin's Room
Mar 18, 2010 12:56 PM2431 Views

What women want

He was tempted outright. She was warm and willing – and slightly stoned. He had a jagged edge to himself

And wanted to bruise and chafe and play rough tonight. She flirted and cooed and talked naughty. He had driven her home from the party. And now they were on the street beside her block. The street weary lamppost livened up as he sensed action from the jock. She was out of the car and curled up to him; her finger running

over his face and chin. He was smiling, edgy, raspy breathed

The street was empty; the night careened as if shot with gin.

“ Come to my parlour”

“Oh dear do”

He pulled her closer and was about to…

When all of a sudden, his embers cooled

“I can read her mind, and of all womankind”

A nameless weight bowed his heart

“ Just not right, Just not right”

He bundled her off in to her room

And swerved off the porch, his mind a-gloom.

Marvin's Room

Bessie and Lee are in a room together and Bessie is arranging her paralyzed father’s medicine in a tray. Lee grudgingly acknowledges (mentally) that Bessie has given much of her lifetime to their father’s care. But now if Bessie dies of leukemia, the responsibility will be thrust on her. She is in a tizzy. At the same time, Bessie has endeared Lee and her son Hank. So much so that Lee feels she is able to reach out to him now (he was in a mental asylum for burning down her house). Bessie has had an episode when they are out at Disneyland.

As Bessie lifts the tray and is moving out, she suddenly loses balance and falls to the floor beneath. The contents of the tray are all splattered around. Lee instinctively lunches forward to help her up. It is then that Bessie looks at Lee with the most poignant eyes.

A look that speaks volumes! At once she is appealing to her elder sister for empathy. Those years of neglect. Her unswerving attention to her paralyzed father, which even took away her small pleasures. The unspoken beseeching look which is imploring Lee to take stock. The manifest insurmountable vagaries of life unfolding at the moment. And the fact that Love is the answer. All this is conveyed by that single look. Truly, it is Diane Keaton at her absolute best. In fact, it is no longer about Bessie communicating with Lee, but the situation and the superb playacting, which is taking you to your real self. You discover that all those thoughts and the resultant emotions and feelings are actually within you waiting to unfold. The pictures become a medium, but the realization is already within.

Great Movies of the 90's
Dec 08, 2007 02:44 PM3705 Views

What is the difference between a merely good movie and a great movie?

I merely enjoy a movie, come back home, and then forget about it, I classify it as a good one. But if that movie stays with me, right after the end credits are over, I recommend this movie to every friend I know, I spend days together thinking about the characters, I spend hours discussing this movie with other people, I know this is a great one for sure.So here are some of my favorites from the 90's. Also the order of the movies has nothing to do with ratings please, so for heavens sake, please dont ask me, why this movie is above, and that movie is below.

Hope is always a Good Thing

Whenever I watch The Shawshank Redemption, two questions always cross my mind, How did this movie fail at the box office? and How did this not get the Best Picture? . Much as I love Gump and Gumpisms, for me Shawshank remains any day the far better movie. The tale of Andy( Tim Robbins) who is imprisoned for the murder of his wife, at the Shawshank Prison, and his friendship with Red( Morgan Freeman) is so wonderfullly uplifting and moving, that at so many times, in this movie, I would feel that lump growing in my throat. Every scene is so wonderfully crafted, and some like the scene, where one of the inmates commits suicide, unable to adjust to the real world, just leaves me shaken. And yes that last scene where Red reads the letter from Andy, and those words "Hope is always a Good thing, Red", I just feel myself, holding back my tears. Rarely have I ever felt so moved and touched by a movie. And the performances are just fabulous by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. This without any doubt is my favorite movie of the 90's for sure.

Life is a Box of Chocolates

Forrest Gump is that kind of movie, you either hate it or love it. For me the basic theme of the movie "Life is a box of chocolates, you dont know what to find, some sweet, some bitter" is what makes it my favorite.  And of course Forrests experience in life, his interactions with various persons like JFK, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, as well as his take on some of the more famous events of the 60's and 70's. Some have criticized it as being too simplistic and naive. While Gump is not a political and social commentary, it is not meant to be.

It is basically the story of how a person sees the world from his view point. Yeah it might be simplistic, it might be naive, but it is up to you to accept it or not. For me I love Gumpisms, and do not have any qualms in admitting so. And of course one of the best opening scenes in a movie, the feather floating along the sky, and then falling at feet of  Gump, And a fantastic performance by Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump. Only reason why I rate it a notch below Shawshank is because of its climax, and the fact that some scenes just drag along.

A List that saved Lives

A womanizing businessman, a wheeler dealer with the Nazis, called Oskar Schindler( Liam Neeson); a sadistically cruel concentration camp commandant called Amon Goeth( Ralph Fiennes) who believes that all Jews are vermin, who need to be exterminated; a mild mannered Jewish accountant Ithzak Stern( Ben Kingsley), and of course one of the darkest periods in history the Holocaust. And add a director called Steven Spielberg, you get a movie that is a totally harrowing and realistic account of the Holocaust. **Schindlers List is the story of Oskar Schindler, who put his life, his business on the line, while saving Jewish people from Hitlers gas chambers, with the assistance of his accountat Stern. Memorable performances by Neeson, Fiennes and Kingsley. At the end of the movie, you come out wondering what makes people so cruel, that they can inflict such dastardly atrocities on other human beings.

8 Men for 1 Man

During World War II, the US Government had a policy, that every family, should have one single member alive. A mother informs that she has lost all her sons, save one, in the War. 8 soldiers are handpicked for this task, led by Cpt. John Miller( Tom Hanks).  Using this theme, and the backdrop of the Normandy landings, Steven Spielberg again comes up with another masterpiece in Saving Private Ryan. As Miller and his team, undertake the search for Pvt. Ryan( Matt Damon), we are drawn into their encounters, with booby traps, Nazi soldiers, rain, and the fact that finding Ryan in war torn France is aking to looking for a needle in the haystack. If not for nothing, the movie is my favorite due to it's opening 15 min battle sequence. War has never been presented more brutally, more realistically on screen. That scene is enough to leave you totally shaken. Just ignore the flag waving Pax Americana* tone, and Spielberg's tendency to fit in a Hollywood style happy ending, this is a movie that spells classic.

Who is Keyser Soze?

An explosion , a murder, a crime, 5 crooks who are suspected, and one lone survivor. The cops have no clue, except for one name Keyser Soze. The Usual Suspects is one of the best noir movies, I have ever seen so far. Kevin Spacey in a brilliant performance as Verbal Kint, one of the few eye witnesses to the crime. The problem begins when he starts to narrate the incidents to the cops. The plot has twists and turns that leave you totally befuddled. From the scene where the 5 characters, Verbal, Keaton( Gabriel Byrne), McManus( Stanley Baldwin), Fenster( Benicio Del Toro) and Hockney( Kevin Pollak)** meet to get back at the cops who arrested em wrongly, to the present, where Verbal is leading the cops on a wild goose chase, with his constantly changing story, we like the cops are left wondering who is the culprit. And then there is Keyser Soze, who has to be one of the most fascinating characters to be ever seen. Watch it for that stunning climax, which just leaves you speechless. Loved thgis movie for its non linear mode of narration, as it cuts from past to present, back to past again.

FIVE BEST Hollywood Movies of the 90s
Jul 21, 2004 03:23 PM4778 Views

Before I start with this review I would suggest a look at the reviews included inline in this review. Specially the All Time 10 best & special review on 'A few Good Men'. 1990s was one of the best decade for Hollywood if not the best. There were several actors that came of age in his decade. There were several high profile pairs & related gossip. There were a few world-wide mega-hits like T2, Titanic. These were the days before the animated movies (there were some but not that many). The lord of the rings, Spiderman, Harry Potter, The Ice Age, Find Nemo, Shrek etc all are making/braking records but I still love the movies that did it the 'hard-way' with a proper real life story & cast. I am going to exclude heavily animated movies from this list.

A Few Good Men, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Dumb & Dumber, T2 have made their way to my 10 best review anyways so wouldn't repeat them here. Also this list is going to be a bit off-beat! Please don't be surprised to see many classic not finding place here. I am choosing these 5 based on the impact they had on me at that time.

A Few Good Men It is an 'usual suspect'! :-) This movie will appear in every 'top blah movies' review I write. Here's a detailed review on this movie (You can't handle the truth) A Few Good Men : https://mouthshut.com/readreview/54545-1.html.

Honorable Mentions: Saving Private Ryan; Pretty Woman; Notting Hill; Absolute Power; The Class Action; Philadelphia; Erin Brokowich; As good as it gets; Silence of the Lambs; Braveheart; The hunt for Red October (Jack Ryan movie is it from 80s/90s?)

Check this out too:

10 Best Hollywood movies: https://mouthshut.com/readreview/57426-1.html

Here are the 5 moveis I liked most in the 90s.

---------------(1) SCHINDLER’S LIST---------------

Filmed completely in Blank-n-White this movie was a deep experience to watch. Just imagine yourself in front of a Nazi officer about to kill you for the reason that you belong to a specific community. Spielberg shows his hatred of Nazis every chance he gets even Indiana Jones says 'I hate Nazis' in 'The Last Crusade'! Here he shows why. Everyone knows the kind of massacre was carried out in the WW2 by the Nazis but it is other thing to watch the mechanics & aspects of it for straight 3 hours. The whole experience is mind-boggling. Oscar Schindler shows what one person can achieve if they can ignore a little selfishness. The complete movie is no-nonsense. No wonder it got so many awards & public as well as critic acclaim.

---------------(2) LA CONFIDENTIALS---------------

Rolla Tomassi: Off the record, on the QT & Very Hush Hush

A super-polished movie. Many heavyweights like Kevin Spacy; Danny D'vitto; Russel Crow; The beautiful actress made their significant contribution in the movie. The support cast is also very high-profile. What is significant is that the sum of part is greater than the individuals! Capt. Dudley, Leland 'Buzz' Meeks; Detective Lt. Edmund Exly, Officer Bud White & so on. These characters make the screen live. You got to watch this movie to understand how much impact the cinematography & screenplay has on the overall outcome of the movie.

---------------(3) THE UNFORGIVEN---------------

Evergreen Actor-Director Clint Eastwood recently got an Oscar for Shawn Penn for the movie 'The Mystic River'. Eastwood directed this all time classic western 'The Unforgiven' in the 90s when there were not many western movies making it to the screen. A select few that made it thru failed to impress the viewers. This was a challenging project & Eastwood did it in style. Gene Hackman an imp ally of Eastwood in the 90s also made a great impact with his cruel/law enforcement Sheriff portrayal. Eastwood is his usual self. i.e. to say excellent. Morgan Freeman: My 100% man, always delivers does it this time too. Morgan Freeman's performance makes final killings by Eastwood justifiable.

---------------(4) CRYMSON TIDE : Those naval boys---------------

This is a 'high drama' movie with smashing performance by Gene Hackman & Denzel Washington. Basically there is a difference between the style of two officers who should be in agreement to execute an order or take a decision. A message is received by the US warship carrying nuclear weapons to launch against the targets in Russia. They start with the procedures etc & a Russian submarine attacks, to hide from the attack they have to go deep & loose contacts with 'the command' (The President). A message makes it through but broken & it says 'imp message the nukes..' etc i.e. not sure if the previous order has been cancelled & they are now asking not to launch or if it asks to launch rather quickly etc. Gene Hackman says the first command is valid as this one is incomplete & doesn't make sense & we got to launch ASAP; Denzel Washington on the other hand says we got to wait for a clear message & go up so that it can be received. This is necessary to make sure a nasty nuclear war is not launched in the hit of the moment. High drama confrontations & tension of launching nuke weapons that too against Russia is handled perfectly. You got to watch this movie. One of the all time greats.

Some of the exchanges are just GREAT. About the best horses that come from Sweden are 'white' as put by Gene Hackman but Denzel Washington says they are actually black when they are born! :) At the end they both receive a mouthful in the inquiry that they should have sorted out the differences etc etc instead of making it a complete mess/chaos in the warship. At the end Gene says to Denzel: You were right..Denzel: What? Gene: About the horses..you were right about the horses i.e. he shows that he still believes that his decision to launch was correct! The movie ends with no actual answer to the catch-22 issue! Who was correct in that case remains unaswered.

---------------(5) My name is GLADIATOR---------------

Maximus! Drama to the maximum..story telling at best & presentation just out of the world. Everything about the movie is grand & the great performance by self-declared bad-boy (not so much in reality) Russell Crow. I am sure most of the reader have seen this movie. Simply put it is one of the all time great one. Win the crowds & you will win over the King & earn your freedom This movie wins the crowds & gets them to cinema halls repeatedly.

Hope you liked the selection. As I mentioned it is bit off-beat as it excludes the movies from my '10 Best Hollywood Movies' review.

--------------Thanks for reading it, Now time to rate & comment it!--------------

Grand and Lavish 1990's.
Jul 20, 2004 09:22 AM3688 Views

The 1990's were the decade where fantasy overtook facts, computer animation & special effects dominated the movie making process. While good films continued to be etched out, production budget planners had as many as$200m to work with. The result were lavish & much grander picturisation.

I present my top 5 Hollywood films of the 1990's.

  1. Forrest Gump(1994)

Directed By: Robert Zemeckis.

Starring: Tom Hanks.

Worldwide Gross:$677, 386, 686.

Awarded Best Picture, Best Director & Best Actor Academy Awards.

The world will never be the same once you've seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump, inspite of an IQ of 75, has been present at many historic moments between the 1950's and the 1980's. He does everything from teach Elvis how to move his hips to running the length and breadth of America.but his true love, Jenny, eludes him. Tom Hanks is the only actor who could have played such a role so convincingly.

  1. The Lion King(1994)

Directed By: Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.

Starring(Voices): James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons.

Worldwide Gross:$783, 841, 776.

Life's greatest adventure is finding your place in the Circle of Life. In this coming of age story, the young lion prince Simba is tricked by his uncle Scar and runs away from home. Years later, having fought the shadows of the past, he returns to his own kingdom and claims his rightful crown.

Read my review of the Lion King at: https://mouthshut.com/readreview/46583-1.html

  1. Titanic(1997)

Directed By: James Cameron.

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet.

Worldwide Gross:$1, 845, 034, 188.

Awarded Best Picture & Best Director Academy Award.

Rose and Jack's immortal love story against the background of the sinking of the Titanic. A story of a rich heiress and a third-class passenger is appealing enough, but its greater purpose is to make the effect of the tragedy more personal. One of the many all-time memorable scenes are Rose and Jack posing on the railings & Jack painting Rose in the nude. This film is the biggest ever worldwide success to date.

  1. Jurassic Park(1993)

Directed By: Steven Spielberg.

Starring: Richard Attenborough.

Worldwide Gross:$914, 691, 118.

A ride in the park with prehistoric creatures. Anyone game! Welcome to Jurassic Park. A park with DNA-cloned live dinosaurs as the main attraction. But the ride turns to disaster with the escape of the dinosaurs who begin to destroy the park. The star of the film was a computer-generated Tyrannosaurus Rex.

  1. Pretty Woman(1990)

Directed By: Garry Marshall.

Starring: Richard Gere, Julia Roberts.

Worldwide Gross:$463, 406, 268.

A modern day fairy tale that established Julia Roberts as America's biggest pin-up girl since Marilyn Monroe. A innocent movie about a pro*titute with a heart of gold who meets the industrialist who values her for her virtuosity, won many a heart. Gere takes over companies, takes them apart and sells the pieces for more than he paid for the whole. Human feelings are not considered. Same goes for hooker Roberts who mentally detaches herself from her profession.

Some honorable mentions:

Ghost(1990)

Saving Private Ryan(1998)

Home Alone(1990)

Toy Story(1995)

Schindler's List(1993)

The Champions
Feb 28, 2003 12:12 PM2912 Views

As is the case with any decade, 1990's showcased a lot of movies, few originals and a lot of repeats. There are time(occasions) in an era, when a Movie seems like an Epic(All time great). But to make a movie a Great Movie, it should be loved and liked in any given time(occasion). A lot of time have passed since these movies were viewed or even talked about, but these movies still remains etched in our memory making it The Champions.

Silence Of The Lambs - Action/Thriller

King among Thrillers. Antony Hopkins gives as Outstanding Performance. Released in 1991, it is still quite famous among cine-goers. Must have, classic. Sangarsh(dubbed version, in Hindi) was just the ghost of the Original.

The Mask - Comedy

A lot of you critics may disagree to this movie, but it was one of the very few comedies ever made that can be viewed by all ages. Especially liked by kids. The special effects are amazing, along with excellent Screenplay and Dialogues. Made Jim Carry a household name.

Forrest Gump - Drama

Tom Hanks plays the role of mentally retarded. Who have just two things in his life, his dreams and lot of heart. With all the luck he have, he becomes successful in whichever business he does. But never finds his love. The journey is all about finding his love. When he finds her, he losses her to death. Performance by Tom Hanks is incomparable.

American Beauty - Fantasy

Movie that was class apart. Original and Class script. Unpredictable till the End. Kevin Spacey in the role of the Lifetime. The story revolves around Kevin Spacey as an Middle-Age man, going through unusual family crisis and about leaving his fantasies. Great Movie and a Splendid Direction by Sam Mendes. A movie so close to reality but still all about Fantasy.

Schindler's List - True Story

Life is stranger than Fiction, how true. One of the very few movies that got tears in my eyes. The ironic part is, for the love of the movie, I cannot watch it with my parents and friends, because of the true description of the torture done upon the Jews(male/female). If ever given a choice to choose the best movie ever, Schindler's List will the top the list.

The choices are all mine and may not be liked by a lot of you, but please do comment what I missed.

Mind Blowing Movies
Feb 22, 2003 03:12 PM3953 Views

The 90s introduced a different kind of cinematic entertainment to the big screen. It was the year of the Titanic, and a year of Spell-bounding, unforgettable war movies. We were awed, amazed, and mentally challenged with the reality of hatred. My choices among the most awe-inspiring movies to hit the big screen include:

  1. ROSEWOOD (1997) This is a powerful dramatization of actual events which took place in Rosewood, Florida. It deals with the ugly truth of racism. We will never understand one man’s plight to destroy another because of the color of his skin.

The story takes place in the year 1923, in Rosewood, Florida, with no more than 120 residents, mostly black. John Wright (Jon Voight), is a white store owner, distrusted by Rosewood’s blacks, and labeled a “race-trader” by the whites. Mann, (Vhing Rhames), is a wandering World War I veteran entering the town of Rosewood seeking peace. Unfortunately, peace is not what he finds.

All seems well in the little town of Rosewood, until a white woman (Fanny Taylor), cries rape, claiming that she was assaulted by a black man. Enters an angry lynch mob headed for the town of Rosewood to burn it to the ground and kill anything “black” that moves. By the end of the week, all that is left of Rosewood are ashes and horrible reminders of bloodshed. It is horrible to comprehend the ugly side of racism, and as equally horrible to know that it still, in some form or fashion, exist.

  1. TITANIC (1997) A spell-bounding movie which invite viewers to live through each scene. Director James Cameron gives us what we are looking for, from the moment the ship sets sail, to the tip of the ship as it sinks.

Brett Lovett (Bill Paxton) is filming a documentary while on an expedition to recover some of the ship’s buried treasure. His main interest is a 56-karat diamond necklace worn by Rose DeWitt, (Kate Winslet), one of the passengers of the ship. He faithfully believes that the necklace went down with the ship when it sank. A woman, who identifies herself as Rose DeWitt Bukater, sees the documentary on TV and calls Lovett. She soon confesses to Lovett and his crew, that she is Rose, and begins to tell her version of what actually occurred that fateful night when the Titanic went under.

Enters the day the ship is leaving Southampton. A penniless hustler and his best friend have just won a third-class ticket in a poker game, to board the Titanic. Already aboard is Rose (Winslet), a beautiful American woman engaged to the cruel, cold-hearted Cal Hockley (Billy Zane). Once aboard, Jack catches a glimpse of Rose, and from that point on pursues her. By chance, they meet again. Soon the two become friends, followed by intimacy.

Despite threats from her egotistical fiancé Cal, and her money-grubbing mother (played by Frances Fisher), Rose wants out of the engagement. Enters Molly Brown, (a captivating performance by Kathy Bates). Molly knows all to well of Jack’s kind, and gives full support in his pursuit of Rose. Just as the triangular relationship between Jack, Rose, and Cal, is about to explode, the Titanic hits an iceberg, and the rest is Titanic history in the world of movie making.

From that point on, viewers become hypnotically enthralled in every second of the movie’s final chilling hour. As the Titanic and its victims fade into darkness, viewers see the unbearable, hypnotic scene where Jack’s frozen body slowly sinks to its final destination.

  1. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998) The movie begins quietly in France. A man stands at a gravesite amid thousands of white crosses, paying his respect. Enters June 6, 1944, a chilling recount of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, followed by violent, gory scenes of the reality of war. Spielberg holds nothing back in this war epic movie. Everything from bloody bodies, severed body parts, and blood-colored beach water is visible to the naked eye of the viewer. It is truly not for the faint of heart, and this is just the beginning!

The movie focuses on the four Ryan brothers. Two of the brothers died in the invasion and one perished. As the mother receives telegrams of the deaths of three of her sons, General Marshall (Harve Presnell), decides to send men into the French countryside to try to rescue the fourth Ryan brother, paratrooper Private James Ryan (Matt Damon).

Enters Captain John Miller, (Tom Hanks), a survivor of the D-Day invasion. Miller is chosen to lead the men in this search. The team consists of Miller, six of his most trusted comrades, and Upham, a newcomer and translator. There are fights, and then there are FIGHTS. Viewers watch in awe as American soldiers visit bombed out towns and their remains. As the movie draws to an ending, we see the beach, anchored offshore ships, and a blimp-filled sky.

For me, a good cry occurred the moment the mother received the three telegrams all at once. There were moments when I just had to get up, open the front door, and take a deep breath in order to feel alive. This Spielberg movie cheats no one. Every moment, every detail, every death becomes an unforgettable, mind-consuming experience.

  1. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) What is it about this movie that makes it so scary?” For me, it is the “dark side of Hannibal Lecter.” As the movie begins, viewers are introduced to FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster). Starling has been selected by the head of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn), to help in the search for Buffalo Bill, a transvestite serial killer, who is obviously obsessed with the skin of his female victims. He murders them and removes their skin. Starling is used as bait to get Hannibal to talk and provide a profile of Buffalo Bill. The intelligent, Einstein-like Lecter agrees to cooperate with Starling, but only if she is willing to reveal secrets of her past to him. It is obvious that he already knows enough to intimidate her by playing the mind-game.

Hopkins becomes Hannibal Lecter in every sense of the viewer’s mentality. Jodie Foster, as Clarice Starling, is the piece of puzzle that completes the whole cat and mouse chase between the two characters. She invites us to venture into the psychotic world of the distorted. The relationship between Lecter and Starling is of wonder. You know something is there, but you cannot comprehend or grasp the depth or the intensity of the relationship. The movie searches the mind of the viewer. It is captivating, disturbing, and chilling.

  1. SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993) Directed by Steven Spielberg. Krakow, Poland, September 1939, Jews vs. Nazis. Enters Oskar Schindler (Neeson) a Nazi businessman seeking to obtain Jewish backing for a factory he is about to build. He discusses financial matters with an accountant, Itzhak Stern. By March 1941, Jewish communities are being forced to move into an area called the “Ghetto.” People are now interested in investing in Schindler’s factory, which manufactures pots. Jews are hired to work in the factory.

March 1943, Germans liquidate the Ghetto, and survivors are sent to the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp. Many are executed, and others are shipped away by train. Enters Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes), a Nazi who takes full pleasure in killing Jews. Schindler, now considered somewhat of a friend to Goeth, secretly campaigns to help Jews escape death.

Spielberg gives us a ghastly jolt of the horrible realities of the Holocaust. So much hatred, as with slavery, I ponder the question, Why? What was the purpose of both the Holocaust and slavery? Innocent men, women, children died because of their ethnic heritage, because they were Jewish, because they were black.

Action and Tears of the 1990's
Apr 24, 2002 01:10 AM6718 Views

A little note here I wrote this once and when I submited it, it got lost somehow.  UGH!  So here I go again, I know I should have saved it to computer, don't worry I will do that this time.

Now for the last few weeks I have been reading what you all think about the best movies.

I have thought hard and long on it.  I think the best movies are the ones you can watch over and over again and not get bored with them.

So my Top 5 best movies from the 1990's are the ones I never get bored with.  I love a good love story, but believe it or not everyone of the movies on this list of mine is action!  Though a few of them can send you into tears.

Now I am not going into great detail about each movie, that would put us here all day, and well we do have lives, right?

  1. ID4-INDEPENDENCE DAY: Will Smith, Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum.  Aliens are suc*ing the earth of life.  It's up to these characters to save the world.  The graphics are out of this world.  Watching Washington D.C. and California, blow up is a real experience.  Not to meantion thousands of spaceships, tring to destroy the world.

  2. MIB MEN IN BLACK: Will Smith, and Tommy Lee Jones.  Aliens live among us, and it's up to these men to make sure all goes well. Of course it doesn't.  It's up to the MIB to save the world.  I love all the different looking aliens.  My kids love this movie and watch it over and over again.

  3. THE FIFTH ELEMENT: Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman.  This movie is another alien movie.  This is the idea of the four elements of life earth, wind, fire and water.  Yet the writters of this movie put in a supreme being, Human.  The fifth element and Bruce Willis must save the world from an ancient killer, that comes every 5000 years.  My kids love this movie too.

One more time we are going to save the world but it's not aliens that are coming.

  1. ARMAGEDDON: Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, and Liv Tyler.  A meteor is about to destory the earth and the only hope is a bunch of oil drillers.  My husband's all time favoite.  He has watched this movie at least 30 times.  I like it for the love story, and the music, Areosmith does this movie alot of good.

Now this last one, the world is not in danger, just one man trying to get back to his family.

  1. CON AIR: Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, and John Malkovich.  This is about a man who went to jail for protecting his wife and unborn child.  5 years later he gets out, and catches a flight with a bunch of hard core convicts.  All h**l brakes lose on the plane and it's up to Nicolas Cage to make it home without being killed.

Now this is my list.  Everyone has different tastes.  If you haven't seen a few of them, check them out, you might be suprised.

Thanks for reading!

The decade as it was...
Mar 27, 2002 01:41 PM3638 Views

We are the 90's generation when the MTV style hit India. We changed our outlook completely and moved in forward direction. Even our own Bollywood movies saw changes with movies like Hyderabad Blues, Bombay Boys, Rockford, etc. made their appearance. It was during this decade that I grasped the beauty of cinema.

I saw some great movies, both Hindi and English, in the last 15 years. I hated some. I ignored some. But also I adored some masterpieces of Hollywood.

It is very difficult to list just 5 movies. There are so many! So, what I would do is, list my favourite top 5 in detail, and give my other favourite movies in brief.

So, here I go:

5) Titanic

You like it or not, but this movie is an epic for Hollywood. The theme is very close to a Hindi movie. A poor guy meets a rich gal, who is already engaged to the villain of the movie. The poor guy, ultimately, gives his life for the love of his life.

Leonardo Dicaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane give credible performances. James Cameron is always a brilliant director. Celine Dion'sMy heart will go on is still rated as one of the best love songs. And the total ship sinking scene is very real-like.

Technically superb and brilliantly directed, Titanic will be rated as one of the best Hollywood has ever produced.

How can I forget those serpentine lines outside Regal theatre, just to watch this movie. People went smiling inside, and came crying outside. No, not because they did not like the movie, but they were touched by the climax scene where Jack leaves Rose forever and drowns in the icy cold ocean.

The movie is emotionally charged, and takes us again on an epic, but tragical journey of Titanic.

4) American Beauty

Sam Mendes gives to us a classic tale about an average American middle-aged man, which was superbly enacted by Kevin Spacey.

The story revolves around Kevin Spacey, who is an American aged around 45-50. He has a daughter, who is just like any other teenager. He has a wife, who is least interested in him. He has a job, for which he is least interested in. His daughter has a friend, in which he is highly interested.

He starts exercising and shaping up his body, just for the ultimate moment where he will meet his dream girl and will make love.

The movie is very sarcastic in nature, and gives a feeling that it is a black comedy. There are several heart-touching scenes, and several comical scenes. The end is also very surprising. Those who have watched this movie will agree that Kevin Spacey deserved an Oscar for this movie.

The movie is a journey in the fantasies of a middle-aged man, which is true for everyone, whether he is an American or English or even an Indian.

3) Gladiator

Ridley Scott give us an absolute joy ride. This movie portrays the strength of the weak, and the pride of the poor. It says that however small you maybe, or however weak you maybe, all you need is a clean soul and strong will power to achieve the goals of your life.

Russell Crowe gives an Oscar-winning performance. He plays the role of the Gladiator whose family is butchered by the Roman Emperor. He then avenges their death.

The movie is filled with some dashing dialogues and brilliant visual effects. Did you know that the sets of the movie was designed in our very own Mumbai's Filmcity! Even the costumes were designed by artisans of Rajasthan. The director was very happy with the work. The massive sets were designed by talented people of India! It is such a proud thing!

The war scenes are beautifully choreographed. Every bit of the movie is in details and complete. It really takes you back in the Roman Empire.

2) The Truman Show

Jim Carrey and Ed Harris star in this beautiful movie.

Jim Carrey gives a memorable performance of his life. He is not in his normal kind of role where he is eccentric and wild. He plays a role about a guy who is adopted by a television company for their TV serial. This TV serial covers every aspect of his life in the biggest set of the world. His moves are controlled by the director, and he is responsible for the happiness and sadness in his life.

He leads a life in a make-believe set with false characters. In the end, he does not choose fame, but chooses freedom where he can live his life.

This movie portrays that we all live in a make-believe world where our emotions and our moves are controlled by someone else. May it be your family, your employee or your girl/boy friend. You do what they like, you behave as others want you to. You are never your ownselves. You are trapped in a big set called the World.

This movie is my favourite and it gives me the inspiration to break free.

1) Forrest Gump

The only movie that made me cry is Forrest Gump. In the scene where Tom Hanks weeps on the grave of his love Jenny (Sally Fields) is so touching that I could not control my tears.

Tom Hanks plays the lead role where he is mentally ill. But Jenny, the love of his life, gives him inspiration and makes him run on his feet rather than on crutches. But Jenny always leaves him alone where he faces other worldly bonds.

He is sent in the US Army for the Vietnam war, where he loses his friend, Bubba. He also earns fame in the game of table tennis. He also becomes a billionaire with his shrimp business. He also coins the word ''Shit happens'' and gives us ''Smiley''. He runs across America for nothing. He is invited by ''Apple'', but he thinks it is some fruit company!

He is a simple guy who just wants his love, Jenny. But in the end, when he gets Jenny in his life, he loses her in a few days.

It is a journey of a human being who always got everything he didn't wanted. What he needed was snatched away from him by fate.

Rober Zemeckis proved again that he is one of the best director in Hollywood. This movie is just great. I don't have words to describe it.

These were my favourite 5 movies of the 90's. But there are many more:

The Lion King: About a lion called Simba who avenges his father's death.

American Pie: A hilarious movie about college guys and gals.

The Mask: A bank manager discovers a mask that changes his life completely.

Jurassic Park: The prehistoric dinosaurs lives again.

Schiendler's List: A quest of a man to rescue a Jew group from the clutches of the Nazis.

Terminator 2: The Terminator is back, but this time to protect.

Braveheart: The quest of William Wallis to free Scotland.

Philadelphia: A man fights for his rights in this court-room drama.

Babe: A pig becomes a sheep-dog and win a tournament for his farmer.

The Mummy: The dead comes back to life again.

The Matrix: The real world.

And there are so many other movies.

I hope you enjoyed my list. Send in your comments. I will be waiting.

Bye then people. Happy reading!

Five classic films...
Oct 08, 2001 05:55 AM3193 Views

Since I was young, I have always shown a keen interest in films. Many people have told me that this signifies a mis-spent childhood. They are probably right. Never mind, eh?

Although many people will strongly disagree with me, I think the nineties has been the best decade for films. I think this is largely due to the fact that most films made nowadays are based in some way on films previously made. The films I have included in this review are, in my opinion, the most original and inventive films made in the nineties. So here they are:

The Matrix

Definitely, in my view, the film with the most inventive plot ever. The idea is complex, yet somehow made easily understandable. Keanu Reeves delivers a faultless performance as Neo, or ''The One''. In fact, this was one of the best cast films I have ever seen. There are few, if any holes in the plot, yet it is the sort of concept that would usually lend itself well to criticism.

What I will say, however, is that while there were many people like me who loved The Matrix, people who didn't like it seemed to hated it with a passion. Oh well, each to their own.

Pulp Fiction

Tarantino defintitely took the world by storm with this one. Fair enough, it's full of gratuitous swearing, violence and drug abuse, but it was made with such style that it's hard not to be impressed. Pulp Fiction inspired many films to come. In fact one of the most entertaining aspects of the film is trying to work out which order the scenes should follow.

I could not fault a single performance in the all-star cast. Even Tarantino himself is impressive as Jimmy. Yet, as with most great films, it was highly controversial. A true cult classic.

American Beauty

The most emotional film I have ever seen. I usually find it difficult to actually deeply involve myself in a film, but I had no problem with this one. Kevin Spacey is, without doubt, one of the finest actors ever. And if you disagree, watch American Beauty.

This film never fails to focus on the horrors of reality, yet still manages to show the beauty of life. It is not the plot that makes this film, it is the script. Definitely a masterpiece.

The Usual Suspects

Watching this for the first time, although I enjoyed it, I couldn't work out quite what all the fuss was about. Then came the end of the film. And then I realized. I think a twist in a story can often make it, and it is certainly true in this case.

''The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.''

This was Spacey's first big film, and his performance was easily deserved of the Oscar he one for it. And the advantage this film has over most, is that it is just as enjoyable watching it for a second time, if not more. In fact, I have seen this many a time, and I am still not even close to getting bored of it. Gives a new meaning to the word 'clever'.

The Devil's Advocate

Reeves makes it onto the list again, with an equally as good performance. Pacino does just as well as Satan himself.

Again, it is the double-twist at the end that makes the film what it is. To be able to completely reverse one's perception of a film at the last minute is a true talent, and Taylor Hackford manages it with this one. With clever dialogue and camera trickery, it projects a Hitchcock-style atmosphere to keep you permanently in suspense.

So, there you have it, my favourite five films of the nineties, and, in fact, ever. Although I'm sure half of them will be replaced at some point in the next decade, at which time I'll just have to write another review!

MASTERPIECES of the last decade!!!!
Aug 29, 2001 04:02 PM6745 Views

The best movies of last decade- The 90's....

PULP FICTION - THE BEST FILM EVER!!!!! the most influential movie to emerge from the 90's. A film that single-handedly changed the face of American -- and world -- cinema in 1994, Quentin Tarantino's PULP FICTION is a rare masterpiece that is unlikely to be repeated by him, or his imitators. And he will be forgiven for not producing another such masterpiece. The cast just rocks... And what do I say about THE BEST ''bad arse merfcker'' of hollywood - Sir SAMUAL L JACKSON. Tarantino makes pictures for movie-lovers, and Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece. This is the film that changed my life. From a passive film watcher to a hard core film freak. TARINTINO is the reason.

AMERICAN BEAUTY- definitely one of the best films i've ever seen. For a change OSCAR got it all right by giving Oscars to a dexerving film. Kevin Spacey rocked like hell as Lester Burnham. His performance is truly key to the film's ultimate success. I cannot think of anyone else who could have done justice to the role. The cinematography by Conrad Hall is ''Fantabalous''. And the music(amazing) perfectly compliments the camerawork. I have seen this movie almost 10 times & believe me each time I have found something new in it which I missed before.Infact the last time I watched it I was amazed how each & every scene of American Beauty can be made into a poster.

FOREST GUMP - This was one hell of an cinematic experience. I remember watching it reluctantly in school but was blown by the end of it. Since then I have watched it thrice in PLAZA (stoned) & loved every minute of it. TOM HANKS was born to be Forest Gump. This is ROBERT ZEMIEKES masterpiece. His Citizen Kane. Theres not much I have to tell anyone about this one of the most popular film of 90's .I bet half of u have even bought the double cassette soundtrack also. Vietnam War with DOORS music....wow!!!!A truly extraordinary cinematic experience.

SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION- One of the best films of the 90’s, infact , one of the most beautiful movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching. It had the misfortune of being largely overshadowed by two other very popular and extra-ordinary films, Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction which were released the same year 1994 (probably one of the best years for film lovers). Infact people must have forgotten it had seven Oscar nominations that year, but unfortunately couldnt win even one mostly having lost out to the above 2 films. But Shawshank Redemption has continued to win new fans, as well as repeat viewings from those who loved it the first time around. This is a film which cannot be disliked by any human being according to me. There will be people who will hate PULP FICTION while others love it more than they love their girlfriends but this is a movie which if someone doesnot like ,I will pray for his soul. Shawshank Redemption to every human soul .

ALMOST FAMOUS-

''Cameron Crowe has never directed a bad movie: Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire, and now Almost Famous. He even wrote the script for Fast Times at Ridgemont High! And the liner notes for Frampton Comes Alive! Crowe's Midas touch has again produced gold -- Almost Famous is a tour de force, with a stellar ensemble cast (Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson, Jason Lee, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Frances McDormand) and a funny, heartfelt script. If the summer studio slop has you down, catch this one (released Sep. 15). It will restore your faith in film.'' courtsey AMAZON.COM

for once I have to say they r bang on. CAMERON CROWE rocks. This is perheps one of the best films ever about rock'n roll & a rock band. This is a movie which makes u feel good about the whole experience of watching films... And if one is stoned then this movie becomes 10 times more incredible. The music is soooooo good. The pool scene is one of my fav....I DIG MUSIC...no I'M ON DRUGS....hehehe. A memorable scene.

Having named the top 5 films I will not forget the other equally great films which did not make my list maybe but wikll definitely figure in many top 5 films of 90's. So here is my list of ALSO RANs-

GO,

1st Half of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN (watch the best bar ever shown on cinema),

Star movies of 1990's
Aug 10, 2001 07:50 PM4025 Views

This is my personal list and includes my views alone .

--------------------------------------------------------

BRAVEHEART (1995)

Firstly I think , as a director for just the second time ,

mel gibson has done an excellent job.though the end is depressing its on the whole worth a second and third watch.

the movie depicts passion , courage and emotions especially when mel talks to his people that was soul-stirring .

AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999)

Sam mendes did an amazing job for the first time as a director.kevins role was well enacted by him .it was tragic , funny and sad . you have to explore the film deeply and not just surface it only then will you get the true meaning.the element of sucess lies in the individuality

and uniqness of each character

american beauty makes you realize the inner beauty and points out how we neglect our truest innermost feelings and go on to hide them.its a powerful film.

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991)

It won umpteen awards which it rightly deserved.

it was amazing how she persuaded ''hannibal'' to catch the serial killer, although some scenes are rather atrocious to watch they are nevertheless mind blowing and kep u on the edge even while you watch it another time yet .

THE EDGE

I still feel at a loss of words when I recollect to describe about the film .its three cheers to anthony hopkins

all the way. ofcourse alec and mcpherson did well too.

but joly old anthony takes the cake . his knowledge and fearlessness was very encouraging especially in the scene where the bear nearly gets them.

his patience and trust and also his personality are super-duper.

after having done everything he could for them to save their lives he gives them the credit in the end .that was the most touching part of the movie.

i loved it crazily .

TITANIC

I think its beautiful and fascinating .

my heart could go on and on about the song and the movie.

caprio and winslet were cute and impressive

the picturization , facts and details ,

romance and passion.

all were done and shown well

bravo

My favs movies of 1990s
Jun 02, 2001 04:07 AM6693 Views

This is relatively a simpler topic than choosing twenty best songs! But I did have to grey cells a lot to come up with my favorites of 1990s. After much permutations and combinations, I finally arrived at the list. The following are my favorites movies; those movies which I would love to see again and again and again and.....

Here goes!

___FORREST GUMP___

Life's like a box of chocolates...you never know what you gonna get.

So True. So Magical. For me, these words are one of the best words I have heard in my life. The movie itself qualifies to be one of the classics made in english movies for me. The autobiographical story of Forrest Gump takes us through a journey of ups and downs, love and friendship, war and its futility, success and family, and finally the innocent heart of Gump. I wouldnt really mention the story line, everyone must have a fair idea of it...and those who havent seen it, then you have missed a great film! There are some very endearing moments in the movie...like when Gump meets his son for the first time, or when his wife and mother pass away, or the hilarious moment when he decides he had enough of running around, or the war in vietnam. The movie also succeeds in bringing some important questions like the futility of vietnam war, or what drugs can make u and so on. Tom Hanks as Gump gives his career best performance, his next one being philadelphia. The other actors too aptly support him, though I dont remember their names. All in all, This movie is a classic not to be missed!

___TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY___

Rarely are sequels better than its prequel. This was one such movie. I consider this movie to be the best movie by James Cameroon. The mind boggling special effects added gloss to the movie. Certainly, one of the best special effects movie ever. Arnold as the iron man gives a commendable performance ( one of those movies...where he did!). The other cast is also good, but the movie itself is held by a strong script and effects. The futuristic story of a iron man coming back in time to save the hero of the future....was intially confusing...but very original indeed! Some of the fight sequences have been picturized amazingly and I still gasp at them whenever I see them again. A certain one of the best on my top movies of 1990s.

___MISSION IMPOSSIBLE___

Another all time favourite of mine. this is one sleek thriller. Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt does a wonderful job of a detective. Brain De Palma's directs this thriller as if he were a master of thrills! Ethan'steam is killed during a mission meant to catch a robber who has the NOC list. luckily ethan survives and becomes the immediate suspect. He comes to know that the whole thing was a hoax. he then teams up with MAXto get her the real NOC list. couple of scenes later, he manages to unveil her, as well as get the real culprit who was working against the team. Though, sounding simple, its not a easy story to decipher. this movie comes as a welcome change against James Bond. the gadgets and stuff are state of the earth...especially, the bomb-chewing gum. the pace of the movie never lags, and keeps u hooked till the end. Add to that some spectacular special effects, and you re ready for a visual treat as well. the suspense for a first-timer is mind blowing. and even when u know everything, the movie still manages to entertain whenever u want to get engrossed in a movie. It is one of Tom Cruise's best movie, with other one being Top Gun. The film has a televised look, mainly I think because it was lifted from a televised series. the Noc-list-retrieval stunt is simply breath taking and leaves u at the edge of the seat. this movie is a must for me if I have to enjoy a night.

___TITANIC___

This romantic movie set against the backdrop of the Titanic is simply breath-taking...though this is the second best by James Cameroon for me. The movie sounds very much like a hindi movie, with hero saving the heroine, then they falling in love, however girl's parents disagreeing, blah..blah later, true love succeeds. But what was so amazing was the way emotions were depicted in the movie...the director really makes you feel Rose and Jack. The visuals are nothing but stunning! The special effects like all Cameroon movies are mind boggling and realistic. Some of the best picturized scenes ever also belong this movie, like the evening scene with Rose and Jack on the rails declaring their love, or the painting which Jack draws on Rose or, the last scene where the older Rose throws the pendant back into the ocean. A lot of people told me they didnt like the ending, but certainly, I think the movie was brilliant in its end. A certain favorite of mine for years to come.

___SCHINDLER'S LIST___

What can I write about this movie. This was the first movie for which Spielberg received the best directors award, though he deserved it for his E.T and many others as well. The life and times of Oscar Schindler are depicted brilliantly indeed. His idea of saving Jews shown convincingly, and very justifiable. This is certainly one of Spielberg's and one should not miss this movie at any cost. The whole movie was picturized in Black and White, except one scene with the girl in red...Did Spielberg intended or not, I dont know. With some amazing visuals to support a strong storyline, this comes across as a truly spell-binding movie.

These are my top favorites of 1990s. The ones which were on my list, but didnt make it to this list were Jurassic park, life is Beautiful, As Good As It Gets, Theres something about mary, Dumb and Dumber, Saving Private Ryan and a few others. May be if the topic was for 10 best movies, then I would have added them too!

Happy Viewing!
