The book fire on the mountain has an average content this story is not so attractive that it can influence the mind of The Reader also the content is not so clear means the moto of the story is not clear there are many doubts and also nothing interesting happened in this story there are so many female characters in the story The main one is Nanda who was widow of chancellor she lived on the top of the mountain alone with a servant actually the theme of the story is based on loneliness once Asha sent a letter To her mother Nanda that her granddaughter Raka wood come soon as her daughter Tara was going to Geneva with her husband abuses her mentally and even physically she didn't want to go to Geneva but under pressure she decided to go Raka was also like Nanda she also like to live alone so ultimately Nanda and Raka both started liking each other Nanda used to tell about her childhood stories raka also had a good bonding with Nanda servant Ramlal therefore sometime Nandha felt jealous of it meanwhile Nanda childhood friend lla das came to Nanda house to meet Raka she went back to her home she was living a poor live as we can see this is a very common story we can't say it interesting not entertaining also the end of the story is is disgusting the ending is senseless while Raka lived there sometimes the mountains got fire she used to see from her house when illa Das get murdered she lit the fire in the mountain and the story ends I suggest don't waste time in reading this senseless moral less story.

A perfectly composed post-pioneer work. Takes us through the lone existence of Nanda Kaul, her reluctant association with her fantastic little girl and the disclosure of similarities in character. The novel investigates the part and lives of ladies in post-pilgrim India, managing the antisocial way of Nanda Kaul which was a consequence of retaliation of a devoted life in her past and the differentiating isolated nature of Raka, her great girl. The novel is marvelous narrating set in the curious slopes of Kasauli.

The plot of Fire on the Mountain is relatively brief and uncomplicated, the significant action occurring within the psyches of Nanda and, to a lesser extent, Raka, her great-granddaughter. When Ila Das is raped and killed, that violent action happens “offstage” at the end of the novel, almost simultaneously with Raka’s announcement that she has set the forest on fire. While there are few important “events” in the rest of the novel, Anita Desai prepares the reader for the horrific ending by carefully embedding violence in her imagery and in her symbolism. In effect, the “fire” metaphorically smolders within her characters before it literally ignites at the end of novel . this story teaches us that never loose your trust on you and keep do hard work. I really injoyed that story.

Amazing Read

Anita Desai is most underrated author in India. The beauty with which she captures a scenario and sew it in her rich words is just gasping.

Fire on the mountain is one of her best work after Clear light of the Day.

The story, while revolving around the main character Nanda Kaul, also talks about the solitude we all are looking for in amidst of these noises. She beautifully portrays the emotions of various characters and does justice to them. A must read for all age groups. It talks about the lost beauty of our nature.

Fire in the mountain

Fire in the mountain by Anita Desai is story of three lives Nanda Kaul, her great-granddaughter Raka and her childhood friend Ila Das. Nanda Kaul is living her life alone in the hills of Kasauli. Raka is recovering from an illness. Hence she is dispatched to Kasauli to stay with Nanda. Nanda is unhappy with the intrusion in her lonely life. Raka arrives at Kasauli. But like Nanda she too stays aloof. She more happy climbing the mountains and touching the ferns. Then one day childhood friend of Nanda Ila comes to visit her for tea. Ila is a garrulous lady. She has a piercing voice and is very much unlike Nanda. She is living the life of penury and has to work hard despite the old age to make money.

The author takes time to build the plot. The story moves ahead very slowly. In the beginning it is too boring. The descriptions drag and drag. Then Raka arrives on the scene. Her relationship with Nanda is nothing like expected. This is where the author scores as a writer. You keep on wondering as to why Nanda doesn’t draw her great-granddaughter closer, make her sit on her lap and kiss her cheek. The answer is that Nanda is like that and so is Raka. Ila is a character which is both hilarious and poignant. Like Raka she too adds lot of colours to this story.

The story is subtly woven. The backdrop of the hills is beautiful. Though the start bored me, after finishing the novel, it gave me a satisfaction of reading something sumptuous. I absolutely loved the book.
