I got my first docs 4 years ago (a green matt finish 1460) and although they've endured almost daily use, they're NOT falling apart. Since then, I've become obsessed with buying docs, and I now have 3 pairs of sandals, 2 14-eye boots, and 10 8-eyes in varying colors and styles. They're a great way to express individuality if you like to paint them (I have a pair under construction). I wish I could go to the UK where there MUST be an even larger selection.

I'm mad that their production line is going to China because I'm afraid that the company will lose sight of quality. Right now, I'm just trying to stock up on any of them in my size stamped ''Made in England.''

The only problem I have with them is that they're incredibly difficult to break in. The first day that I wear them, I usually have to walk to school, and they take a beating from that. I come home with blisters and around the ankle (at the back), the skin is rubbed raw because the leather is so stiff. They take me about 2 weeks to a month to completely break in.

I've heard the complaint that they're really heavy, and that's true. I guess that I've just learned to adjust to them. The good thing is that when I go ice skating with my friends, I don't complain about heavy skates!

I love how comfortable they are! I have wide-width feet and being a girl, it's really hard to find comfortable shoes. I love how docs are unisex and fit my seemingly large feet.

The best part is that when El Nino hit and I had to walk in puddles all day, Docs kept my feet dry and didn't damage the boots.

The coolest things!

I own about 6 pairs of Docs.

Although, they are slightly expensive, they last years and years...and still last. The boots are the best because no matter what you walk in, they still seem to keep their shape, and they dont seem to fall apart. being the youngest of 4, I used to get stuck wearing worn out shoes all the time. the first time my sis got a pair, and she wore em, and wore em. and then she gave them to me and they were still nice. people were like ''oohh did you get new shoes'' so I just said yes (lol)

anyway, the boots are awesome, but the sandles will rock your world. they have so many different kinds to choose from, that you will probobly have to come back and choose later, because you wont be able to choose!

and when you do choose? you will love them. and go ahead...TRY to wear them out!!

THIS 'DOC'S' FOR ME!
Mar 20, 2002 01:48 AM 27458 Views

My Children have been wearing Doc Martens since they were very young. They all had 'hush puppies, (a boot made in suede), the girls wore 'baby janes', (I believe they're called 'mary janes' now...they type of shoe that look like ballet shoes with a strap over them) and hiking boots for years as they are 'trendy'. Did I buy them 20 years ago? No! When I was in Athens ten years ago and couldn't get into my shoes because overnight, (on the plane), my width went from an AAA to a B and my feet were bleeding and blistering. No!

This year when we were going to Asia I knew I had to take a pair of comfortable shoes because my running shoes, (that use to work well for me when I was touring), did not give me the support or the comfort I needed. I should explain I couldn’t wear expensive running shoes because even the very light ones are too heavy for me and the arch support is in the wrong place. I decided it was time to try on a pair of Doc Martens Shoes.

If you don't know who the Doc Martens Company is they make shoes for both children and adults. You can choose from a variety of shoes from: 'classic, outdoor wear, sandals, street wear or stylish.'

I'm much to old to be 'stylish' so I looked at the classical shoes. They were mostly boot style and I didn't want that because the time of year we were going to be in Asia it would me very hot. They did have 5 boots that I could have chosen from.

Next I looked at the 'outdoor' selection. This is wear I bought my first pair of Doc Martens Shoes. They look like a leather running shoe with a 'welded air cushion sole'. There were five different shoes to choose from and the salesman made sure I tried on each one to see which one was the best constructed one for me.

SOME THOUGHTS:

I loved my Doc Martin Shoes that when I was in Hong Kong I bought a pair of their sandals, (for about $100.00CAD). If you are looking for a comfortable shoe for children, men or women I highly recommend you give the 'Doc' a try. I'm just sorry I didn't 20 years ago!

I like that they donate a percentage of their profits to non-profit environmental organizations.

In the United States my shoes would have cost $125.00USD and I would have paid $175.00 but I was given a coupon and so I paid $150.00CAD. Guess what... I would have paid double the money because the are so comfortable.

Boots that last you years.

Not sure that I can help with the request on where to get a pair of these, but they will be imported if you buy them in India anyway (manufactured in the UK). I've been buying these for years and I always have at least one pair in my collection of foot wear. Most of the pairs I have had have seen a third year of nearly daily usage. It's all in that sole you see! They have fantastically air cushioned rubber soles, that are; acid proof, alkaline proof, oil proof and nearly radiation and bullet proof. And they are fairly springy. I generally pay around £60 (GBP) for a set of non-steel toe capped, ankle height boots. That's another thing there's a comfortable cushion around the ankle, so you don't get that nasty 'bedding-in' phase, when you get blisters over your skin. I always get matt black pairs (as I really don't go for shiny shoes!).

One pair lasted me through walking in Slovakia and also India as well as back at home in the UK. It was a sad day when the sole wore flat and I had to get another pair.

I also found I could wear them with anything!! From linen suits to tatty jeans. So they are a versatile classic as well as being extremely durable and functional. I really recommend adding a pair to your collection as soon as you can.

Doctor Who???
Aug 31, 2001 10:01 PM 24409 Views

Let me begin by saying that when my daughter came to me about 10 years ago and said, ''mom, I want a pair of Doc Martens.'', I had no idea what she was talking about.

She went on to explain that they were the latest in footwear. So I said, ''okay, lets go have a look.''

Off we went to the mall to her favorite shoe store, ''Wild Thing.'' When we asked about them the salesperson laughed and said, ''your best bet is to go to the Army-Navy store.''

??????? The Army-Navy store for shoes. But being the person I was (and am), off we went for another short ride to the Army-Navy store in Margate.

When we arrived, we went over to where they sell the shoes and boots and lo and behold they had a huge selection of Doc Marten boots. Ankle high, over the ankle, calf high. Black, purple, green, red, blue.

And then I looked at the prices!! The least expensive were $95.00 and the most expensive were $225.00!

I gasped!

''Do you really want a pair of these?'' ''Oh maaaaaaa, I really, really, really, do'', she whined.

So we started looking at the different boots.

There was a little card on the wall explaining the story of Doc Marten Boots. It seems they were invented by an orthopaedic Doctor. Doctor Maerten. He invented these boots in Europe for comfort and durability to ease his own foot pain. He began selling them to his patients who in turn raved about the comfort. They are in fact styled after military footwear.

She tried on a couple of pair and settled on the black (everything she wore then was black!) almost calf high boots, at $125.00.

......And she wore them for years! And she'd still be wearing them today, 10 years later, if she hadn't gotten into a mood one day (in about the 4th year of use) and spray painted them with silver designs and then couldn't wear them any more because the paint would stain everything.

In this time, I myself bought a pair and loved the comfort they gave me. I wore them everywhere. And to this day I still have them in my closet! I don't wear them as much now, but every once in a while, out come the Doc Martens!

They may not be ''in style'' any more, but the comfort is still the same! And comfort will always be in style.

Would I buy them again? Would she buy them again? You bet!

He wanted style (comfort was a bonus)

The History behind the shoe

Doctor Marten (Dr. Klaus Maerten, the correct spelling of his name) was an Orthopedist who, along with another doctor, designed the first shoe, known as Doc Martens. It was said, he did so after hurting his foot in a skiing accident. The shoe was designed with a special sole that trapped air between two layers of rubber (polyurethane). While this shoe was originally marketed for women, they are generally worn by men and still have a large market for women and men and are even worn by children.

Doc Martens have had good and bad thoughts connected to them. Many view them as a fashion/style statement while others see them as a rebellious piece of apparel. Few see them as beneficial footwear, yet that is exactly what they can be.

Doc Martens were known in Europe first, particularly in England, as the orthopedic shoe they were, yet when they caught on as a fashion statement in the Western world it was far from the fit and comfort, they were bought. These shoes were desired by most teens, in the boot and laced shoe style. I recall them being referred to as the 8-holer and so on (according the the number of lace holes the shoe/boot had).

During this time my son was in grade 7 (12-13 years old) and wanted a pair. They were an expensive thought, so this young boy could make a statement. It was decided we would pay for half and he would pay the difference out of his after school job. His first pair were just shy of the $100.00 mark, Canadian. What followed, came as a pleasant surprise.

My son's feet had been a mother's nightmare from the time he had started to walk. I had paid large amounts of money for his baby shoes, with little success in his comfort. He then proceeded to wear a boot style orthopedic shoe from the time he was in first grade. By the time he was 10 he didn't want to wear them anymore. When he started to wear the Doc Martens, his feet would no longer hurt him while wearing shoes. These shoes were his fashion statement and a mother's relief all in one (how often does that happen).

Young teens wearing Doc Martens became targets in Canada and the United States. They were accosted in parking lots, school grounds and malls and the shoes were stolen. The shoes were bannered in some schools and even certain religious denominations forbade them. My son continued to wear his shoes and today he is married and works all day on his feet.

Conclusion: These shoes were designed for comfort and did their job. The fashion end of the deal was just a bonus for those who benefited from their original purpose. They are long wearing shoes, so therefore, I found the cost was balanced out by the durability and the comfort.

Six Years Old And Going Strong

I can't say that I have ever been in a mosh pit, what ever that is but I can tell you about one fantastic product.

I have owned two pairs of Doc Martens. One pair was a pair of black dress shoes that I wore when I wore dress pants and

the other pair is a pair of sandals. My dress shoes I gave away several years ago because Kitty Man peed in them, Dam that Cat! The shoes didn't have an order other than the smell of leather, Kitty Man is and was a brat. You see if he got mad at me he took it out on my shoes. Lost my train of thought there for a while. At the time I had given away the shoes I had had them for two years, I will say that you couldn't have told that they were that old. The leather held up real well and the stitching was still in tact.

My sandals I still have. I have had them for six years now and I still love them. The leather is still in good condition despite the fact that I wear them when I go fishing, I go in and out of the shallow water with them and they have never shrunk . I paid $115.00 for my dress shoes and they were well worth the price I paid for them. My sandals I paid $125.00 and were worth the price.

I am not only looking at the cost of these shoes when I say they are worth the price, I am looking at the price that my feet have to pay for being in cheep shoes.

Doc Martens are made a high quality leather and they wear forever if taken care of properly. When I wear my sandals fishing, when I get home, I clean them up with a leather cleaner so that thay will last a long time.

Would I suggest that others buy this product? Yea I would without any question.

Comfortable is not the word

My first mosh pit experience was in a pair of Doc Martens and since then the trend has continued.

Although I have stepped out of the mosh pit and on to real life my love of Docs has never quit.

Doc makes the shoes and boots that can stand up to anything.

The boots , usually steel toed can take wear and tear that no other boot can.

My favorites of late are the Doc Marten clogs. They are comfortable and since I have a high instep it is hard to find clogs that dont destroy the top of my foot. The Doc Marten clogs give me a comfortable fit and I can be guarenteed that they will last forever.

Doc Marten are your best bet for tough durable footwear and many styles are readily available
