NO DORK HORSE THIS ONE

NO DORK HORSE THIS ONE

As one of the other reviewers mentioned, I saw the coverpage of this book and found it funny.Added to that, I googled for Sidin and found that he runs a blog that is hilarious and is widely read.So I decided to purchase this book despite the fact that crosswords guy took sometime to search this book(the time to locate a popular book would have been much lesser, I guess). When I completed this, I felt reading this novel was an incredible(mis)adventure and could not contain my urge to write this review.

The first thing that stuck me was the overdose of BD, f and sh, M Fr . Agreed that these days in an urge to wirte the way we speak, writers are liberally using these phrases. But in this novel, every page has one of the above words. Not sure whats wrong with the protagonist, but almost every person is a Fr ot M Fr. And everything is a St or Cp.This I believe is totally going overboard.

Now about the protagonist- A genius at work who can manipulate excel to get the outcome he wants, does such a great analysis of the Lederman bank - but makes a fool of himself(and ofcourse the readers) by drinking too much and acting under that influence. And in one such occasion, leaks a confidential assesment about a client that makes him an overnight hero(I know you are wondering how blabbering after being drunk would finally make somebody a hero). You have endure the torture of over 200 pages to know the secret. If you know the secret you will definitely try and have a couple of more pegs than usual in your office parties.

In between comes his love interest Gouri-someone similar to a movie heroine whose role is just to add some spice by appearing in a few scenes and ensuring that there is something called romance. This includes a scene where she(yes.for a change) makes love to the hero(again under alocohol influence due to a breakup with another man.Seems alochol is the central character of this novel because many'so called'(or so thought by Sidin) twists and turns are effected by alcohol). Now after CB showing us different emotions and situations a woman is tempted to go for it, Sidin has one more addition - a breakup.

Now what does the protagonist do - He works for a Management consultancy, does partying at hotels, eats pizzas, calls everbody a FR or Mfr, fantasises every damn woman he meets, goofs up things, but sincerely loves one Ms.Gouri and in between does some social networking and something like consulting.

The scenes at times seem too contrived and cliched.Like the protoganist mistaking a top management guy as a waiter(I believe our memory of the'One black coffee' ad is still fresh).

The humour is crass by all means.Read 3rd paragraph of page 194 and you will know what I mean.

Now about the plot - its wafer thin, almost non-existent.Nothing more than that on the backcover.Still for the benefit of others I will try to put it across as I understood it -This is the story of a young MBA who lands in a second rung Management Consultancy who while trying to give his best, goofs up things and finally like a comedy of errors, achieves what he wants by getting promoted and gets his dream woman too(though no link between what happens in his professional and personal lives).

I saw another reviewer commenting that'Read it if bored'. I would say'Read it if you want to get bored'.

I know I might be a bit harsh. But I believe Sidin sticks to what he can do the best - blogging and editing.

Incredible Adventures of Robin 'Einstein-A Review
Sep 02, 2011 01:56 AM 3042 Views

Author: Sidin Vadukut  Pages: 248

List Price: Rs. 199

Publishing Year: 2010

I  have a habit of reading book reviews before buying a book. And since I  had not bought this book, I had not read any reviews. So, I was not very  sure about the reputation of this book when I picked it up. I was going  on a short tour and lifted this book straight from the book-shelf of a  friend.

And guess what, the moment I started reading it, I wished I could finish this book without having to stop.

The  unique style in which Sidin wrote this book speaks volumes about his  experience in experimenting with writing. I wish to congratulate Sidin  on the superb writing style.

Diary,  Robin ‘Enistein’ Varghese and an infectious enthusiasm will be amongst  the things that you will certainly remember when you are done reading  this book.

After  ‘Five point Someone’ this book gives a superb description of  college-campus life and the life afterwards. It seemed to me that this  book carried on from where ‘Five point Someone’ ended. The book does  appear to give a heavily drugged view of the world through the eyes of  the protagonist., but that is what kept me glued.

There are several things I loved about the main character of the novel – Robin ‘Enistein’ Varghese. Some of the most notable to me were:

1>Superb description of men/women/situations/surroudings – giving a vivid, visual image to characters & so much so that you start to see them develop in your vision

2>Fantasies of Robin with regards to women

3>Super confident, day dreaming B-school grads for whom nothing is impossible and everything is too easy

This  work of fiction made me laugh out loud on a couple of occasions and  certainly made me smile on most pages. I am pretty sure that this book  would make most people smile if not laugh.

You can buy it online from most stores like ‘Flipkart’, ‘Indiaplaza’ etc.

This book is a good read. As always, you read and decide! My final verdict: 4 on 5.

PS: Heard that it is a trilogy. I certainly am not looking at the other books in the series, no sir!

Dork - Story of an IIM-A graduate's first job
Jan 06, 2011 06:28 PM 3428 Views

This first book by Sidin Vadukut is a decent attempt. But, I enjoyed reading his blog more than this book. Sidin's first attempts to keep the reader engrossed with its plot and hilarious bits, but in general has a staid narrative.

In fact, at one point while reading, I couldn't help thinking if this book was meant to be read mainly the MBA types. The entire story is based on goings on in a corporate office.

So, if you happen to be one of those who thrive on office gossip, then you would probably enjoy it more than I did. It took me quite a while to finish reading this book.

The book narrates the troubles and travails of a fumbling and bumbling guy, from his graduation (from a premier B-school), to (barely) securing a job on campus with a mediocre consultancy firm, and shifting base to Mumbai. The narrative is based on the entries in his personal diary and is in first person.

How he tries to ace his colleagues to impress his bosses for promotion, tries to get a girl-friend, etc. forms the plot of the book.

Unlike a lot of books releasing in the same genre of late, this one is different because readers can relate to some parts of the book and have you grinning at times.

I just hope Sidin makes reading his book more engrossing for the average Joes and makes it as funny as his blog - Domain Maximus.

If you expect a Chetan Bhagat type of story-telling you would be disappointed though.

Read IT! if you are bored.

To be frank I expected a lot from this book. When I started reading I was under the impression that the book is gonna be more like ROCKET SINGH in paper. It turned out to be different. Yes. The instances where Robin mentions about his booze syndrome are funny. His love story on the other hand are just about passable. Not to mention the number of'bastards' in his office. The first hundred or 150 pages are just an account of what happens inside a corporate world and it doesn't help the plot(if anything can be expected at all from a diary) evolve.

Things take a turn after you finish half the book(after a lot of deliberation whether to read it further or not) when Robin starts to struggle with a lot of shortcomings in his office . The politics, backstabbing and other affairs inside the office gives us an insight into the real world of a management consulting firm.

The'twist' in the latter part of the book appears to be contrived giving a sense of artificiality . The post-voicemail parts of the book seem to be far-fetched and preposterous. But what keeps the ball rolling is the manner in which the author has intertwined Robin's sense of humor and frustration.

The last transcript of the interview session is scatterbrained!

This book is just another example of "you cant judge a book by it's cover" . The stuff isn't as enthralling as the cover.

Read it If you are bored.

P.S This is just my opinion. Comments are welcome.

I think the latest craze of every one and anyone trying their luck in the Indian literary field and write books has resulted in this book named as above.

As started by Chetan Bhagat - It is priced right and has an interesting cover - hence lot of people will end up owning one of these.

It is written really innovatively – as a diary – which was interesting. Apart from that, I dint feel anything interesting in the book. Some of the incidents mentioned are hilarious which will prompt you to remember some of your own experiences in personal/corporate life. I would say that the book has a very normal story with some ‘Spice’ thrown here and there trying to make it interesting but has no substantial soul or story line.

If you really have nothing to do and still want to read, please do, else, you can ignore.
