NO DORK HORSE THIS ONE
As one of the other reviewers mentioned, I saw the coverpage of this book and found it funny.Added to that, I googled for Sidin and found that he runs a blog that is hilarious and is widely read.So I decided to purchase this book despite the fact that crosswords guy took sometime to search this book(the time to locate a popular book would have been much lesser, I guess). When I completed this, I felt reading this novel was an incredible(mis)adventure and could not contain my urge to write this review.
The first thing that stuck me was the overdose of BD, f and sh, M Fr . Agreed that these days in an urge to wirte the way we speak, writers are liberally using these phrases. But in this novel, every page has one of the above words. Not sure whats wrong with the protagonist, but almost every person is a Fr ot M Fr. And everything is a St or Cp.This I believe is totally going overboard.
Now about the protagonist- A genius at work who can manipulate excel to get the outcome he wants, does such a great analysis of the Lederman bank - but makes a fool of himself(and ofcourse the readers) by drinking too much and acting under that influence. And in one such occasion, leaks a confidential assesment about a client that makes him an overnight hero(I know you are wondering how blabbering after being drunk would finally make somebody a hero). You have endure the torture of over 200 pages to know the secret. If you know the secret you will definitely try and have a couple of more pegs than usual in your office parties.
In between comes his love interest Gouri-someone similar to a movie heroine whose role is just to add some spice by appearing in a few scenes and ensuring that there is something called romance. This includes a scene where she(yes.for a change) makes love to the hero(again under alocohol influence due to a breakup with another man.Seems alochol is the central character of this novel because many'so called'(or so thought by Sidin) twists and turns are effected by alcohol). Now after CB showing us different emotions and situations a woman is tempted to go for it, Sidin has one more addition - a breakup.
Now what does the protagonist do - He works for a Management consultancy, does partying at hotels, eats pizzas, calls everbody a FR or Mfr, fantasises every damn woman he meets, goofs up things, but sincerely loves one Ms.Gouri and in between does some social networking and something like consulting.
The scenes at times seem too contrived and cliched.Like the protoganist mistaking a top management guy as a waiter(I believe our memory of the'One black coffee' ad is still fresh).
The humour is crass by all means.Read 3rd paragraph of page 194 and you will know what I mean.
Now about the plot - its wafer thin, almost non-existent.Nothing more than that on the backcover.Still for the benefit of others I will try to put it across as I understood it -This is the story of a young MBA who lands in a second rung Management Consultancy who while trying to give his best, goofs up things and finally like a comedy of errors, achieves what he wants by getting promoted and gets his dream woman too(though no link between what happens in his professional and personal lives).
I saw another reviewer commenting that'Read it if bored'. I would say'Read it if you want to get bored'.
I know I might be a bit harsh. But I believe Sidin sticks to what he can do the best - blogging and editing.
