If you are one among the Bollywood fans, who have found Vivek Oberoi, the next big thing in Bollywood, and are very eagerly awaiting his DUM,you may find the review of DHILL more than useful.DUM is another Hindi film inspired by films downsouth, but luckily for Vivek,he gets the right scripts,as he had earlier in Saathiya. ''Dhill Dhill'',(GUTS in TAMIL)the title song is highly indicative of what is in fare for the film-velocity,youthfulness and some runaway success.True to the thought,Dhill was full of youthfulness with a swift screenplay, full of action and no place for melodrama, sentiments and pathos. And the film turned out to be the HIT of 2001,against all odds. At first,Dhill sounded very mediocre, when it was on production.

A simple producer,a director not easily recognised,a hero and heroine who needed a hit,and a small, sincere and uncelebrated crew. But if Dhill was the mainstay hit of Tamil Cinema in 2001,the accolades have to be attributed to the velocity of the film, which was well supplemented by the sincerity of everyone involved in the film. Dhill made waves, with its good advertising strategy. The film was completly well advertised with innovative multi-media ads,and properly prepared newspaper ads.The absence of any challenging or competitive film added to Dhills glitz, and Dhill should thank NARASIMMA,whose over-bias also worked to pulling audience towards Dhill. And Dhill kept its audience on bay, with its lightning quick screenplay powered by action, with a good mix of youthfulness. The plot(courteosy:fateback.com) goes like this.Velu and Asha's quiet interlude at the beach is disrupted by the boorish, uncivilised behaviour of a man in an inebriated condition, who makes himself a nuisance around the place. When Asha shouts at him for his behaviour, the man turns all his fury on her, the altercation ending in Velu giving the man a sound beating. Velu realises the enormity of his action, when he learns that the man he had taken on was 'Encounter' Shanker the sadistic and the most feared cop in the police force. Velu now has to pit his wits against not only Shanker, but also an unscrupulous politician and rowdies like Aathy whom Shanker used, to settle his scores against his enemies. Velu finds his family intimidated, his girl friend arrested and his best friend killed. Velu who had come very near to realising his ambition of joining the police force now finds his very existence in jeopardy.

But Velu has the 'Dhill' or guts to stand up against the man, and finally beat him at his own game. Helping him at times is a disgruntled cop (Nasser) who had been one of the victims of Shanker's sadism. Vikram's dedicated effort to make the film a sucess paved off.Vikram played the charecter after undergoing a lot of physical strains, and he is very outstanding. He makes us believe that no actor around could have done the role in such a great manner. The other noteable person is Aashish Vidyaarthi.Laila,as the heroine needs only to look cute, and smile, and she does both to a T.He really frightens one and all, lending so much life to the charecter of Encounter Shankar.Nasser plays his dignified role with great ease.Mohanraj,Deepa Venkat,Akaash,Rajasekaran,Vyapuri,Pepsi Vijayan and all others perform wonderfully, keeping the acting process of uniform quality in all levels.Vivek,as usual takes care of the comic relief, and keeps your stomachs bouncing, wherever he is in. The crew are more scintillating.Vidyasagar proves his mettle as a musician, and plays the most vital part,in keeping with the pace of the film.He increases the pace with every musical instrument. And the songs and BGM have gone well with the audience. Action films demand quality screenplay, and Gopinath someone new has been equal to the task and put his skill into deft display. The camerawork was wonderful, and is a visual treat for the viewers, especially when they couple with the wonderful location of song sequences. Dharani, the director has been a revelation. His amazing velocity of making a film has impressed all the types of audiences.

The speed of the film was so instense, that even the regulatory masala song was eyed as a barrier to film's progress. His own Dhill(guts) in avoiding sentiments and melodrama has found success, and he avoids over-action, by tactical attacks in the film as well(The Politician Scene).Dharani has to be a hot property. To sum upp,Dhill was a complete entertainer. The value of entertainment was definetely more than what you get out of an average masala entertainer
