'WHICHEVER OPTION I CHOSE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE'
Jun 03, 2006 06:52 PM 3247 Views

Hi Friends,

This was my first Frederick Forsyth (hereinafter referred as FF) novel and I must say – FF rocks. I have read quite a few thriller novels but this one beats most of them. The story, characters, plot and speed of novel is too good to resist.

The Story and Characters

The story is based in the Cold war times – because the writer is of cold war era and the novel was written in cold war times. The story is centered on the usual cold war conflicts between USSR and USA but this time it’s not about reaching the moon first or making more ICBMs or winning more medals in the Olympics. This time it’s about grains.

USSR President and Secretary-General of Communist Party of Russia – Maxim Rudin, is facing a great problem – a problem the solution to which if not found out in time will create such an uproar in USSR that it will be difficult for even the KGB to control it. USSR is facing the greatest shortage of grains in its history. The estimated shortage of around 55 million tons of grains is not just a shortage for the great communist country – it will create a famine. Even the slaughtering of cattle to feed meat to the masses will not compensate for the shortage of grains and the USSR is in no position to fill the enormous gap of 55 million tons.

USA President William Matthews knows about this problem that the USSR is facing and both Maxim Rudin & he know that the only possible solution for the USSR is to either face the famine or purchase the grains from USA which also happens to be the only country on earth which has a surplus of more that 60 million tons. And both of them know that USA will not just sell the grains to USSR – rather they will ask for severe concessions from USSR. So, it’s not just your routine grain deal between two giants. What we have here is a possibility of an international treaty between two gains which will stop the arms race and will increase peace in the world.

UK Prime Minister Joan Carpenter is also in the middle of it. As a trusted ally of the USA, UK has always helped them in any way it can. The British SIS has an agent in the Moscow – Adam Monroe. He has an asset there which is deep inside the Politburo and reports every thing to Adam. When this asset gives a confidential ‘minutes’ of a Politburo meeting to Adam the leaderships of the UK and USA suffers collective chest pains. The trouble is that a very important ‘Treaty of Dublin’ is being negotiated between the USA and USSR. The treaty is of extreme importance to the whole of the West. But inside the Kremlin things are not so pleasant because a lot of people inside the Politburo are against the treaty. These ‘people’ want to overthrow Maxim Rudin and exercise their own alternative – War against the Europe, capturing it, using their grain to feed hungry Russians and spreading the Marxist-Leninist regime. What these ‘people’ headed by Yefram Vishnayev fail to understand is that the consequence of it will be WW III. So, for securing world peace, saving the USSR from a famine, and securing a very important treaty for the mankind – Maxim Rudin must remain in power. What Adam Munroe learns from his asset is that Rudin is about to fall from and Yefram will come into power, which means no ‘Treaty of Dublin’ and WW III.

In the meantime Ukrainian nationalists hijack a supertanker called ‘Freya’ in the high seas carrying 1,000,000 tons of crude oil from Abu Dhabi. They capture this supertanker and demand the release of two colleagues from a West Berlin jail. Suddenly, William Matthews gets a call from Maxim Rudin telling him to put pressure of Berlin not to release those two people otherwise there will be no treaty. What Rudin does not tells Matthews is that in case those two are released and sent to Israel – as demanded by hijackers’ – Maxim Rudin will fall and fall hard. The result will be no treaty and WW III.

Now if the West wants to save itself from a war and wants to secure a treaty so important in the history of mankind as never has been done it must ensure that West Berlin does not releases those two prisoners as demanded by hijackers. If they are released Yefram Vishnayev will come to power, scrap the negotiations and attack on Europe – people will die.

If they are not released, Maxim Rudin will remain in power, West will get its treaty, world peace restored but the hijackers will blow 1,000,000 tons of crude oil right in the middle of 5 coastal states one of them being UK and the ecological disaster will be of such a scale that – people will die.

Now President Matthews is faced with the problem of choosing one of these two options – The Devil’s Alternative – as President Matthews says himself – ‘which ever option I chose, people will die.’

The Pace of story

The pace of story is great. There are no loose spots, all ends tied beautifully. There are no less the 5-6 stories proceeding simultaneously still you don’t get confused understanding what is what. Some of the episodes don’t make any sense in the beginning and you seem to skip or skim them but finally everything mingles nicely and all roads meet in one. The anxiety rises with each episode – while the Europe is bound by the demands of the hijackers the rest of West is exploring options to somehow save the treaty and also the supertanker ‘Freya’ and the 30 seamen aboard. The final 80 pages of the novel are really un-put-down-able. And finally the solution that Adam Monroe comes up with is not revealed to you until the end.

The author, after giving a great climax, gives an epilogue and sums up the story nicely. The story no doubt has a great climax but the epilogue gives you even bigger kick. Because, there is something in that epilogue that makes to smile and understand why some things in the story while not appearing illogical – were certainly weird.

Final Comments

This is my first FF novel so I don’t know much about the writing style of this author but one thing I can sure comment on is that the language is reader friendly. There are no big sentences and overly difficult words in there. This is a novel for entertainment. It can be read on a weekend, will make a great read for a long journey. It is certainly not one of those must-read novels but next time you are looking for a good book to for a relaxing weekend pick this one up. It is worth the money and effort.

Happy Reading,

The name does a fair amount of justice to the book. There is a lot that goes around in International politics and I do believe that people on top have a lot to think of and a lot more bondages than we pursue of. So, does this book make a hot seller?

YES!!! If you are passionate of espionage, war games, etc get started with The Devil's Alternative. Personally, I read such books when in transition. It?s a good book of the cold war era and presents a scenario of what might have been possible.

A traveler?s book is what I name for it. You don?t really see yourself in any of the characters in the book. But that?s not a weak point. As some books are meant for pure action which this most likely will fulfill.

I was pretty shocked by the last page though. I liked how the author stored a last secret that balanced the brain power between the borders. A nice ending to a fitting story.

A Must Read!!!

THE DEVIL's ALTERNATIVE is one of the best novels I have read on the intelligence and international espionage.

I have read other novels by sir Frederick Forsyth like the day of the jackal, dogs of war, Fist of God, Odessa File and each one of it was mind blowing. Devil's Alternative stands equal with The day of the Jackal, if not more.

While reading the novel, one comes across with working styles of the CIA, SIS, KGB. There elaborate plans, their capability to act in the faces of emergency and their internal struggles. The russian politburo is widely covered in this Novel and we come to know about the internal struggles in the heart of the Kremlin.

The interconnection between arms treaty between USA and russia, Hijacking of a giant Oil carrier, Crop failure disaster in Russia and much more makes it a compulsion for the reader to finish the 2nd half of the novel in one sitting. I myself finished the last 250 pages of the novel in one sitting....

Sir Frederick Forsyth, as you know, has a mind blowing writing style. The details that he provides about everything in his novels, one is bound to believe it really happened. The way he handles the situations like the communication between the most powerful people of the world, USA President and British PM and the Russian President is astonishing. Each one of them has to face, at some point of time in the novel, a situation in which they are only left with the devil's alternative. The hijacking by a few ukranian terrorists can lead to such a great confusion in the whole of Europe and USA, even the terrorists were unaware of.

I haven't read other Forsyth novels like The fourth protocol, the deciever, the Icon. etc....and now I think of finishing all these novels as soon as possible...I am really a fan of Sir Frederick Forsyth...

I guarantee that you will get glued to this book after you are through the action of first 150-200 pages and then you wont be able to leave the novel before you finish it.

How is a the hijacking of an oil tanker related near the english coast related to crop failure in the former soviet union?

The novel is set in the 80's (and was written about that time too) at the height of the power of the Soviet Union..

I read this novel a year before and I must have read it almost 20 times by now..

And I am not gonna tell you the story. And if you have heard it from somebody, forget it!

Read the novel on your own.. its simply too good!!

This novel is a typical Frederick Forsyth novel.. but is definitely his finest work of fiction .. by a large margin (even better than the Fist of God)

Warning:: I have read all Frederick Forsyth novels except the day of the jackal.. so the best novel that I have read of his is this one. Fist of God comes a distant second.

Forsyth's characters are brilliantly portrayed as usual and his descriptions are extremely vivid and real. You will be able to identify with some of the characters very strongly

He has brilliantly demonstrated the one-upmanship in the cat and mouse game of espionage

Sincere suggestion: Do NOT skip the epilogue and the prologue..

especially the prologue.. in the prologue Forsyth turns the story on its head... a mind bending ending

A must read

Compulsively readable

The Devil’s Alternative is another masterpiece spy thriller by the veteran of this field Fredrick Forsyth. It is a page-turner and provides genuine entertainment. Like in all his other books the last minute surprises leave the readers stunned. One is overawed after reading this book about the games that the spy world of CIA, SIS and KGB play and I am sure our old time smarty Sherlock Holmes will also have a hard time figuring it out.

The Storyline: I am in no mood in giving away the story of this suspense drama as it would make the book worthless for those who have not read it as yet, but would definitely like to give a glimpse of the storyline without letting the cat away.

Most of the crops in Russia are damaged due to a series of accidental goof ups and the country is about to face a major food shortage, the consequences of which may put Russian economy back by five years. The Politburo of Kremlin is divided into two groups: One led by the President Maxim Rudin who believes in taking the aid of the west for the present crisis and the other led by Yefrem Vishnayev who plans to attack the west and capture Europe. The satellite pictures of the crop pattern in Russia have meanwhile worried both the U.S.A and the British. They wonder as to what has gone wrong with the crops when the weather has been most favourable. The answer comes in the form of Adam Munro, a British SIS officer who is sent as an Ambassador of Britain to Russia to get the real facts. In Russia Munro finds his long lost love Valentina to his help. There is also a Ukrainian freedom movement going on in the background. The KGB chief is assassinated. A ship carrying tons and tons of oil becomes a time bomb ticking too fast for comfort.

There is confusion all over the world with world leaders looking for various alternatives. The American President is in a dilemma. Whichever option he chooses, men are going to die…He is only left with the Devil’s Alternative. The most interesting aspect of the book is the sudden dead ends it provides to a smooth running story. Each chapter ends with the following lines ”And he/she was left with no alternative”.The twist leaves you stunned and you can’t help but read on.

Caution: If you are a very busy person and not a fast reader the book is not meant for you because after a point you just can not leave the book without finishing it. I myself did not sleep a whole night just to complete the book.
