Dettol Soap Reviews

For a 100% ''shuddh'' bath
Apr 26, 2002 12:40 PM 44240 Views

Dettol - The very name brings to mind a brand synonymous with health and hygiene. Most of us would have used the antiseptic lotion at sometime or the other, be it as an additive in water with our daily bath, cleaning the floor of the house, as an after-shave or simply to clean wounds/burns. Indeed such is the top-of-the-line recall of this brand that it’s been unfailingly named as one of the 20 most popular brands in India for the last 2 decades or so. While we are more familiar with the anti-septic liquid, I wish to cover it in it’s soap form in this review.

Ingredients

It contains “Triclosan” – an excellent chemical that aids in cleaning germs and bacteria. I have no idea what percentage of Triclosan it contains because it’s not mentioned anywhere on the cover. Unfortunately, even though I was an excellent chemistry student, I have neither the apparatus nor the knowledge base to “dissect” soaps (I was always more comfy with the roaches and rats).

I wouldn’t have bought this soap under normal circumstances had it not been for the non-availability of my favourite brand “Liril”. My friends jokingly call me a “micro-biologist” because I have this tendency to check out the ingredients of all cosmetics that I purchase. Irrespective of the other ingredients, what I look for when buying a cake of soap is the amount of Total Fatty Matter (TFM) content in it. It only forms the basic and largest ingredient in any bathing soap. Our bio teacher had once told us at school that the more the TFM content, better the soap. TFM is a mixture of natural plant fats and artificial chemical fats and is the compound that’s responsible for all the lather that comes into view when the soap is made wet and rubbed against the body. It is common knowledge that more lather leads to better cleansing. A Dettol soap contains 73% TFM as against an average of 70% across all other soaps. Incidentally, disclosure of the TFM content is a mandatory requirement in India and is therefore mentioned on the hind cover of all bathing soaps. Do check it out when you buy a cake of bathing soap next!

My experience

I’ve been using this soap for the last one week now and as the days pass, I’m feeling guilty that my hitherto unflinching loyalty towards “Liril” is on the wane. I’ve been blessed with highly sensitive skin and have faced no problems even when I used this soap during winter. Many other soaps have this effect of inducing my skin to peel off during winters which was not the case with Dettol. Apart from being usable for different kinds of skins, I’m convinced that it can also be used safely during different seasons without any negative effects. It exudes a pleasant smell unlike the sometimes-nauseating smell that the Dettol antiseptic gives off. In effect, it not only does a good job of cleaning the bacteria and germs on the body but also gives out a nice smell that gives a feeling of freshness. As for longevity, I’ve had 14 baths so far and a little more than half the soap is visible now.

Other Information

The soap is orangish in colour (I know a lot of people who buy a soap because they like it’s colour!) and fits well into the hand while (sc)rubbing the body. Manufactured by Godrej Soaps Limited, the soap weighing 125 grams is priced at Rs. 22, which is a decent enough price when compared to other bathing soaps of the same weight.

Hi!!!

To all Readers....

Lets go back some where in 1980's, we use to add dettol liquid in our bathing water and take bath so that we keep away from Germs.. but as soon a dettol came up with soap since than I and my family, my both son like dettol not because the add is catchy on the television, But they like its colour and its fragrance (New Dettol Soap) not only its soap but its Antiseptic soap, Dettol Soap helps ensure general skin cleanliness and a high standard of personal hygiene. so I use this soap since last 10 years. previous we use to use Lux and life boy but since I started using Dettol I keep my self away from harmful germs and other skin Diseases that use to come from time to time because of mumbai's polluted Climate.

I would recommend that all family who likes to be healthy should buy Dettol Soap and keep away from germs around us in this polluted city for some time.

One thing is there you would find that your soap finishes fast..its is because you might be keeping this Soap in water for long time..so it gets loosen and when you take bath it applies more on your body and ends soon. so as soon as you finish bath, wash it and keep away from water. thus you will use it for longer.

So we SAY ''LETS BE GERMS FREE!! LETS BE HEALTHY FAMILY!!LETS USE DETTOL SOAP''

The word Dettol conjures up images of a sterile, antiseptic environment. Any reminder of hospitals is not the greatest marketing association for a product! Having said that, it is good to use, if it does kill bacteria and germs, as claimed. I store a bottle of liquid dettol soap for a thorough hand wash, esp. if I have been mucking around. But for a bath, no way! A pleasing aroma is a must for a bath soap (atleast in my book) and dettol falls way short of this criterion. As for dry skin, the best soap is Dove, It does leave the skin feeling creamy and smooth.

For those of us with children at home, storing dettol in various forms does help. But for a bath, unless one wants a sterile smelling cleanliness, avoid!

The title says it all...this Dettol Soap ( I like mine in Liquid form in the Pump Action bottle) is the best thing to happen to the toiletry market. The pump action ensures that all the soap is clean and not icky like the ones in the restaurant toilets or in other peoples home. My son loves the fresh smell as dettol does have a smell that is peculiar to itself. The consistency is just right and not like the other Liquid Soaps like Fem etc. which when placed under the water just dissolve away. It is particularly good for people with Oily Skin as the formulation has some chemicals that help in Grease busting, which is quite evident after you wash your hands after a rather nice meal of Butter Chicken and Dal makhani eaten with your fingers. My wife uses the cake type during her bath and she was also suffering from excessive oil but it seems to have controlled it. I would recommend it right off.

Who wants an antiseptic bath?

It's a classic case of the creator falling in love with his own creation! And refusing to understand that the market may not be infatuated with their product on the same level as they are.

The adage that everything is fair in love (and war!) seems to be truer than we think.

Indeed, everything is fair in love! Even packaging one of the most repulsive smells as a commodity (in a segment dominated chiefly by the idea of beauty and fragrance). That's precisely what Reckitt Benckiser (India) Ltd, marketers of Dettol, have done by introducing Dettol soap.

The peculiar odour of Dettol is one of the most omnipresent smells in dispensaries, clinics and hospitals. And as an antiseptic germ-killer and a potent disinfectant, Dettol must be unparalleled in medical history.

But to have that smell in your bathroom?

Well, who needs an antiseptic bath?

The makers and marketers of Dettol Soap have fallen into the trap of what, in advertising jargon, is called ''line extension'' of a phenomenally successful product. What they don't realize is that such extension, if not found suitable by the consumer, could end up weakening the star parent brand.

The famous marketing gurus, Al Ries and Jack Trout, have given some solid evidence of this fact in their trend-setting book titled Positioning. Perhaps Dettol's makers are banking on the fact that their star brand, Dettol antiseptic liquid, enjoys such a monopoly, and is entrenched so firmly in the Indian market, that they would be lucky enough to be exception to the rule and get away with it.

As an ex-advertising man (I spent three years brain-storming in advertising) I think there is a basic fault with this strategy. There are some odours that people appreciate, but only in certain places or only at certain times-and perhaps only for fleeting moments: like phenyl in homes when the floor is being mopped; Dettol in clinics or hospitals; why-some people even like the smell of petrol at times! But give it to them all the time, or let them be forced to inhale it when they are caught in a traffic jam, and half of them will get giddy.

Coming back to the product itself, Dettol soap sells for Rs 14 for a bar of 75 gms. That is almost at par with other premium bath soaps like Lux, Palmolive, etc. So there is no strong incentive in purchase price.

The packaging not only uses the same colours-dark green and white-to ensure that the customer is directly or subliminally reminded of Dettol, but also uses the mnemonic of a sword that is strongly ensconced in public memory as associated with the parent product.

This association, as also Dettol's positioning as a ''hygiene soap'', ignores the fact that most people subconsciously treat bath as an activity that not only assures cleanliness and hygiene for the body, but along with it also evokes feelings of freshness and fragrance that, in a way, pamper the body. Dettol's peculiar smell is subconsciously associated with sickness, injury and medical treatment. This is a very big hurdle for the brand as negative subconscious associations can sometimes prove enormously strong to overcome.

The most annoying part of the packaging is a sentence ''Good health begins with hygiene'', supposedly a slogan by Indian Medical Association that raises more questions than it answers. What is Indian Medical Association? Does this outfit really exist? If so, where is their office? What is the guarantee that it is not a dummy organisation promoted by the makers of Dettol?

And the slogan is all fine, but does this association endorse Dettol Soap to possess that quality? Or is the soap just using their logo (you bet it is there!) and this slogan and expects it to work to its advantage?

On the plus side, the bar lasts longer than most other bath soaps in its price category, and may be an ideal replacement for regular wash basin soap especially in factories, restaurants-and yes, clinics and hospitals where it actually belongs.

Dettol-is this what u want?
Feb 24, 2002 04:44 PM 9957 Views

I wanted an antiseptic soap and the Dettol ad promised a lot. Sadly it seems to have maintained its Dettol Solution in a solid form without any consideration for the nourishment of skin.

Dettol Soap may give the required protection...But is not very good for skin. Makes it rough and dry. Hardly a soap for winter season or dry skin people. Besides it does nothing to body odour.

Hey it is not a wound you are cleaning. It should deal with the complete aspect of cleaning plus nourishing plus moisturising for it to qualify as a good soap!

Disappointing performance and I would not recommend it to anybody.

It is easy to be a dettol fan,but what abt the sme

The soap is from a reputed company, which has long established Dettol as a safety brand. It also contains a proven anti-bacterial agent to support the claim of safety.

The soap has a Dettol type smell as well.whether that is simply a perfume or actual Dettol ingredient,i dont know. However,NO WORRIES ABT SMELLING OF DETTOL AFTER THE BATH..THE SMELL GOES AWAY AND THE AFTER-BATH SMELL THAT LINGERS IS QUITE PLEASANT AND FRESH.

One thing I noticed was when u bathe with Dettol soap,it really makes yr skin feel fresh...the only other comparable experience had was with the old Margo neem soap.

Another BIG advantage dettol soap has is it stays hard and firm for a long time,UNLIKE Savlon or Lifebuoy which turns soggy quite quickly.

Great soap for kids who play outdoors and for hot sweaty days and after u have been outdoors a lot.

Good, Economical but Smells of Disinfectant !
Oct 07, 2001 06:59 AM 5488 Views

Some will say soap is soap and all soaps have the same objective. However, I think there are differences among the various brands of soaps on the market. Some have more pleasant smells than other, some are more economical as regards use and some are much better presented. In the case of Dettol soap,it is the antiseptic qualities that make it distinct.

Dettol has long been a household name in the disinfectant field and this soap is made by Reckitt Benekiser, who are the manufacturers of Dettol. Dettol soap is available in my local supermarket in packs of six and from time to time I have used this soap instead of other brands that I am very familiar with. I find it lathers well and is quite economical although that smell of hospital disinfectant still lingers a bit. Overall I give this brand four stars out of five- it scores well on price and function but the smell may not be to everyone's liking.

Satisfaction guaranteed........................

There are lot of products and fragrances/smell that u are exposed to from your childhood. One such smell/fragrance is that of dettol

It is recently that the company has started exploiting the goodness associated with the dettol liquid to various other products such as soaps, talcum powder, medicated plasters, antiseptic cream, mouth wash etc.,

During my childhood I used to hate the liquid because it used to burn on application on a open wound. But over the years the burning has resulted in a positive for the product which makes me feel that the liquid is working on my wound.

I have got hooked on to dettol soap for only one reason its smell and the benefits of the dettol being a good germicidal.I begin my day with dettol soap. After a hard days work coming back home drenched in sweat, with dust on the face and overall feeling of being dirty, leaves me feeling yuck....I switched over to dettol soap because it gives me complete satisfaction of having a full 100%germ free wash and makes me fresh to start a new day in the morning/evening post a hard days work. The sheer smell of the product makes me feel fresh, clean and hygienic

An excellent product which gives me guaranteed satisfaction.Hope the Company launches dettol soap (the original ) with moisturising properties for the winter season. The company has already launched a kids glycerin soap under the dettol name.

The company can launch a shampoo under the dettol name which could be an anti-dandruff shampoo for the adults and an anti-lice shampoo under the dettol name for the kids.

Grow up with Dettol
May 24, 2001 07:13 PM 3634 Views

Most of the people grow up with a few brands/products. Some brands that are inevitable are like, Vicks, Johnson's, Threptin, Dabur, Gripe water, Dettol etc.

The child distinctly remember's the smell and burning sensation of Dettol on his wound.

Here's on more Dettol Soap, with the distinct and unique smell of Dettol antiseptic liquid. Though some people find it similar to a hospital ward, it's the smell I like. Something that reminds of my childhood, genuinely. I really don't know if it is really antiseptic, but have found that it works really well on small unattended wounds!

Its almost become a habit. Especially an evening bath with Dettol soap is really invigorating.

It really protects.

Dettol soap is a Reckitt Benckiser product, famous for strong brands and quality products.

Dettol soap is one of their best products in the long list of good and effective portfolio.

Te Dettol soap is for 100% bath this you need when you really feel the need of getting rid of germs, the soap cntans PCMX which is one of the best germicidal known, and also used in the dettol liquid, which is almost synonimous to antiseptic.

Dettol soap though a complete soap without harshness is positioned as a germicidal soap, and the new variant Dettol Extra is positioned as beauty soap, both variants are quality products and deliver the promise.

DETTOL soap is a new soap of P&G, of Hindustan Liver Ltd. Which cleans all bacteria and germs of body. It gives freshness and relief against daily exhaust. This is abetter product for those who are working in field area. Today, whenever diease increasing rapidly then DETTOL is necessary for every family. But this product is costly among other daily soap users. So the family whose monthly income is upto Rs. 10000 will recommend it.This product is not for farmers and labours. I recommend “Margo” in place of Dettol soap.

No Soapy Dettol please...
Dec 18, 2000 08:45 PM 3988 Views

All soaps are meant to clean and keep you away from dirt and sweat. But here's a soap which comes with an antiseptic ''Dettol'' in it. Question is, does it contain enough doses of Dettol needed as antiseptic, or just the scent of Dettol with no antiseptic effective element in it. If so, then this soap is just a marketing gimic. I think if you really need Dettol, reach out for a bottle of Dettol and add a few drops for your wash. That way, you are SURE and hygenic. But as a soap, one would be happier with a sweet smelling scent lingering on your hands or body, definitely clean, maybe glowing skin,...Do you really need to smell of Dettol ? I for one, would'nt.Also, if the soap is really Dettol-effective strong, sensitive skintypes should please keep away.

A Hospital Soap
Dec 17, 2000 09:57 PM 2810 Views

This soap has been in the market for ages, but it is sad to say that this product has not kept with the times.

Whenever I used it it reminds me of some ward in a hospital because of the smell. Though I would love to use it the smell puts me off and I change in favour of other brands.

I would suggest that the anti-bacterial properties of the soap should be coupled with an axiting fragrance.
