Danny and the Dinosaur - Syd Hoff Reviews

Danny and the Dinosaur- A Wonderful Adventure!
Jun 11, 2001 11:33 AM2633 Views

This book by Syd Hoff provides both the adventure into the world of reading and into the world of imagination. ''Danny and the Dinosaur'' is a great book to get your child interested and involved in reading. I've used this book a lot as a technique to get little ones that I am babysitting for to wind down before bedtime. I have found that although little girls are intrigued, little boys especially love dinosaurs. This book is geared at 4-8 year olds who can or are learning to read. It is a great book to share with younger children also.

The adventure begins with Danny's visit to the Museum. He goes to the Dinosaur section and makes a wish out loud that he wants to play with a dinosaur --- the dinosaur responds. Danny leaves the museum on the Dinosaur's back and they venture out into the city. The book obviously is fiction, as a majority of people are not extremely surprised to see a dinosaur. The adventure and playing continues until Danny has to leave to go home and the dinosaur goes back to the museum. This book is also a great talk topic for working with younger children. When I baby-sit, I am pretty careful about content of materials and the messages in that content and discuss it with the child at their level. This book raises a lot of great parenting type topics:

Why was Danny who appears to be between 6-8 alone at the Museum? A great way to reinforce to your child to: Always make sure an adult knows where you are.

Why was Danny comfortable leaving the museum with the dinosaur and going out to play? You should never leave where you have permission to go without letting an adult know where you will be.

Keep in mind also to discuss with your child the difference between fiction and reality. Let them bring up the differences, you may be amazed at the points they have that you would never have thought to discuss with them.

Overall, ''Danny and the Dinosaur'' is a pretty quick read which makes it an excellent bedtime story. The content is pretty graphic and really seems to capture little hearts!
