Loved the Kerala style seafood!
Oct 23, 2012 11:37 AM3648 Views

Living in the US, one thing I really crave for when I visit home is Kerala style food. Having lived in Kerala for a while, am a big fan of mallu food (and there is a huge dearth of good Kerala restaurants here in the US). Was so happy to chance upon this place on Church street during my last visit to Bangalore.

Both me and hubby really enjoyed the seafood and the chicken dishes! And the appams were well made too! I can't say this is the best Mallu food I have ever eaten, but then, its a damn good alternative to having to make a trip all the way to Kerala for sure :)

Good restaurant for Mallu food

I love the food but it is not consistent. You might love a dish today and feel it is crappy the next time you order it. Hard to get the people to attend to you. Might spend a lot of time waving and trying to get their attention. Overall, food is decent and reminds you of kerala a lot. Need to do something about the mosquitoes..

Expensive -yes!

Avoid on special days for sure

I had been to the one on Church street about 3 years back and loved it. Keeping that in mind, I suggested to my family ( dad, mom, wife and Sis) that we have our Onam Sadhya there this year. Called them twice the day before Onam. they refused advance booking stating that they have lots of tables available and we can come over and will get a table easily.Spoke to a certain John.

Reached there about 1:30 pm on Onam day ( 29th August). Place was crowded with people, lots of people standing outside waiting to enter. Took a token for Rs 500 per head, so thats Rs 2500 for all of us put together. Waited for about half hour and were told to enter " Car Parking"!!! which was converted to a dining area with god knows how many tables and chairs. place was crammed and poor ventilation. Looked right out of a low llevel, cost effective affair. Hundreds of people fighting for tables, standing in queues to pick up food ( buffet).

Stood in line , got the food and had the shock of our lives when we tasted it. It by far was the worst kerala food I have tasted in my life. Same comments from all of us in the family and many who ate out there.

Basically, a very sad and badly managed occasion by the staff who clearly overcharged us. Imagine rs 500 for eating at the car park and that too food that was not at all tasty. Very deeply disappointed with it , though I must say that when I did go a few years back on a normal day, I really loved it.

Being an optmistic person, I hope they see this and call us back and provide us lunch on the house to make up for messing up our Onam

Avoid this place

I went to the coconut grove in maratahalli .  the place is right on the main rod and because it is open, it is noisy and dusty.

The'thein elaneer' which was supposed to be tender coconut water flavored with mint and honey,  was a big disappointment. It was like drinking tap water with an over dose of honey and absolutely no mint!

the starter of pepper chicken was more of a gravy dish with rubbery chicken.

We ordered a crab curry for the main course. This was supposed to be a kerala specialty, but it was so bad and the crabs so small and smelly that we sent it back!

We then asked for a fish curry in coconut milk, which tasted similar to the carb curry and had edible fish!

All in all, a BAD experience.

I had gone to the Coconut Grove on M.G.Road a couple of years back and had liked the experience. So, on this late sunday afternoon, returning hungry after a visit out of town, when we saw the name Coconut Grove in Koramangala - and a picture depicting a glass of cold beer, we decided to stop and enjoy a chilled beer and have lunch .

As soon as we entered, I realised that this was no comparison to their M.G.Road place. - set bang on a busy road in Koramangala, the section outside was hot and dusty - and inside, there was just two rows of 4 or 5 tables . Absolutely no ambiance to speak of - the tables and chairs are not very comfortable.

Now came the sad part - the picture of the beer was misleading. They do not serve any alcohol! Since we were too tired to get up and leave, we settled for Buttermilk and rasam to drink. The buttermilk was ok .*The rasam was a terribly sour and salty concoction with too many floating particles, making drinking it difficult.

The food order was simple - we just wanted Appoms, Vegetable stew . and kerala style fish. The bearer suggested Prawn fry, Karimeen fry and Meen vevichathu. We decided to try all of them!

I must confess that except for the Karimeen fry, none of the above items were made in the traditional Kerala style . The stew tasted as if it was thickened with cornstarch instead of coconut milk, the fish curry felt like the gravy was made seperately and the fish added later! The prawn fry was ok - with typical masala of coriander powder etc.; but that is not the way Kerala prawn fry is made traditionally. The appams could be a lot better too .

In short, I feelif you are looking for a Kerala cuisine experience, do not go here. The food was edible and priced o.k Our meal came to around 800/- for four of us. For a non Malayali -this place might be worth a visit as the service is good, and the place is clean . I also felt all food cooked was fresh .

A nice but overpriced restaurant

Well, me & my wife hit coconut groove for dinner this valentine's day. Walking along church street with a dilemma whether to jump into Bhima's(Andhra Spl) or into 20ft high(not been there yet, only been to bowling) or into chinese or into Angethi, we happened to see this restaurant and thought why not try this one today.

Well, overall, we had a good time, service was good thoe a bit late(blame it on the crowd that day:). We had Appam, Parotta, Chicken Curry(chettinad style) & then a veg curry(forgot the name thoe!). They were all tasty, served hot and since we had not had mallu style food for quite a while, we enjoyed it.

We had Then Elanir(Coconut water+ Mint+ Honey), it was toooo good and we loved it, that we ordered it twice. Try this guys, you will love it. The ambience is good, tables are not placed too close, so fear of whether people may overhear(unknowingly!:) what you talk is less:).

A good place for sea food lovers & Non vegetarians, vegetarians have limited choice only.

Only thing I found bad is the PRICE, PHEW it blows you off, unless it is a spl day/occassion or if someone else is sponsoring:) you won't prefer it again, only heavy valets feel comfy here. Even the winelist is too heavily priced.

cheers

Coconut Grove is an experience. A green, quiet, traditional soothing world ... reminding you of grandmothers, coffee estates, mid-afternoon snoozes, and oil massages.

(what an image! grandmothers getting oil messages before mid-afternoon snoozes in coffee estates. ).

Hasn't changed much in the last 10 years. The Kerala cuisine is pretty good, traditional, though other places have better fish to fry.

Your plate arrives with a square of banana leaf in it. The appams (like dosa) are fresh and spongy, the curries are fragrant and steaming in copper pots, the malabar paratha is supposed to have a 1000 layers, but I'm eating, not counting.

For the complete experience, begin with the coconut water with cooling mint and honey. Skip the starters, and go straight to the entrees. End with the ada pradhaman, the traditional dessert.

Tip the nice waiters generously. Go home, snuggle back into bed and watch a video or fall asleep. Your lazy sunday has begun.

Coconut Grove is on Church St, back of MG Rd.

Ambience - and a half

Relaxed! That's what patrons to this very popular eatery located on Church Street feel as soon as they enter the portals of a soothing, palm fringed ambience. Not to be mixed with the Coconut Grove Bar of the Taj West End, this restaurant rates high on the popularity stakes. Splashes of green with men in white mundus and shirts form the leitmotif of this ‘Kerala speciality' restaurant. Fairly large and able to accommodate groups of 8-10, the seating is informal yet private and if you're not an early bird, then you have to wait your turn.

On a hot summer day the best thing to refresh you is a glass of coconut water which has a dash of honey or for the die-hard Southies, moru or butter milk, which has pieces of chopped onions and green chilies and tastes well….I'll be honest and biased…it tastes yummm.

Coconut Grove is a restaurant that caters more to the non-vegetarian palate. Fish, pork, chicken are de rigueur here, and if you don't have appams and chicken stew then I guess you're missing something. Of course the chicken stew is bland and not spicy, but one can always have the fish in tamarind and coconut gravy, or the dry pepper chicken or mutton which are mouth watering and perfect to wash down with a pint of beer. For the vegetarians, am not sure if there is a lot of variety to choose from, however the thali seems to be the best bet.

Not very damaging to the wallet, a meal for 2 without liquor would probably cost Rs.350- Rs.500/-. A restaurant for all seasons, it's probably ideal to chill out on a lazy Sunday with friends and family.

God's own restaurant
Nov 17, 2004 09:15 PM4692 Views

Here's a small cozy restaurant serving cuisine from God's own country( Kerala ).

The first thing that hits you when you visit Coconut Grove is its greenery - the green plants, the green shaders ( affording privacy to the tables ) - even the tables are green.

Cocktails:

I think they serve the best cocktails in Bangalore in such a calm and peaceful environment.

My personal favorites are:

a) Cocoknock - it is served in a coconut shell and is very impressive, both in appearance and taste. At Rs. 120 its a good deal ( although not cheap by any standards ). And it does not give u a kick with just one, especially if u follow it up with a meal. Recommended for lunch.

b) Thallishery Bomb - Same price range. But served in a typical cocktail glass. Is stronger than Cocoknock, but I luv it.

Mocktails:

For the non-alcoholics, try the usual milk-shakes or juices. Avoid the Ella-neer, which is coconut-water with honey in it - its expensive and doesnt taste as divine it is made to sound. Actually it tastes bad with lots of tulsi leaves also thrown in. But the health conscious might luv it.

Starters:

Slightly expensive, but the egg-pakoda is good.

Food:

After the wonderful cocktails, here is what I would recommend: Freshly made hot appams with fish-curry. For veggies, veg-stew is good. There's enough to choose from for the chicken / mutton lovers too. I've not tried any pork dishes, so dont know abt them. Each appam dish comes with 2 appams and at Rs. 25 a plate, they are a steal.

What to avoid: Avoid any crab dish at all costs. Very expensive and not worth the price. I and six of my friends ordered one and all of us left it as it is.

Time:

Can easily spend 2-3 hours on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Ambience:

Light instrumental music played very softly. No loud music here. Take your grandmother to this place and even she wud approve of the music.

Service:

Excellent service with the mundu-clad people making you feel at home. They dont rush you even if you are spending 2-3 hours there.

Cost:

About 4 cocktails, some starters, 6 appams and 2 non-veg dishes - for 2 people - will set u back by Rs. 700-800. Without the cocktails, the bill is only abt Rs. 400-500.

This is the first place I take any of my friends visiting me from outside Bangalore. So that sums up my opinion abt this wonderful restaurant in a nutshell ( pun intended - smile ).

Relaxed dining @ the grove
Aug 11, 2004 01:56 PM5667 Views

Coconut Grove is a cool green place to getaway to in the heart of Bangalore..the restaurant and bar is part of a chain-I've been to the one in Chennai as well (that's located in landscaped lawns in the area where Shoppers Stop is)...

I'm writing this to recommend a very specific menu-having tried the length and breadth of their offerings on the menu!

For non alcoholics-the cucumber tomato cooler is just the thing on hot summer afternoon...or go traditional with the More (lassi).

If you like your tipple-the choice is a no brainer-Bangalore draught of course!

Order a pandi Curry(Coorg style pepperyPork fry) or a Pandi varathattu(a gingery Pork fry) or pehrpas Mutton if you don't eat pork!

Next you have to try their appams and order a veg or chicken stew on the side-this isn't the best place to be a vegetarian...but the thali will do if you don't eat appams.

The crabs here are avoidable-you need a microscope to find the little things-and they seem so fragile you'd feel immoral eating them!

For dessert the only way to go is the pineapple halwa made fresh and served with some cold vanilla ice cream. Perfect.

A meal for two here would set you back 500 to 600 rupees but makes for a nice relaxed evening. Wortha visit for Mangalorean/Coorg and Kerala cuisine.

One plyate Apom! One plyate Saaaru!
Jan 09, 2004 12:30 PM5588 Views

One plyate Apom! One plyate Saaaru! Well, you would not hear these calls to the kitchen at Coconut Grove. These are reserved for those dingy holes in the wall kind of restaurants, which sadly is widespread across our garden city. This hotel is way above such joints which sadly to say is only good as far as the ambience goes, however, the quality of the food served here is akin to what you get in the aforementioned joints. It would be harsh to say that the tastiest item dished out in this quaint restaurant is the Kaveri (hope it is) water, yet CG does serve some signature dishes, which are unique, and to die for. Primary among them is the excellent Apam and Ulli Theeyal (accompaniment). This combination is unbeatable and tastes as good as my grandmas’ combination back in my backwaters home in Kerala. The buttermilk is also yummy which is tempered with mustard seeds; ginger pieces, whole red chillies and copious amounts of fresh curry leaves. This is probably and also very unlikely (since Malayalees are not famous for their buttermilk) the best buttermilk severed in the cantonment area. Bouquet time is over folks; let us come to the brickbats. We agree that this is a pucca Malayalee joint, then why in the heavens name are the chefs flaying all those sumptuous seafood. My benchmark of a good seafood restaurant is ascribed to 2 dishes, one the ubiquitous fish fry and then the fish curry. The fish fry is the simplest of dishes to prepare and strangely CG does not get this right. The fish is fresh though but the taste is awful. I attribute this to the deep frying process they adopt, which is to my mind a cardinal sin. The 2 main fish fries offered here are the Sear or King fish and the Black Pearl (Karimeen). I ordered a Karimeen fry and it arrived on a platter attractively decorated with a colourful garnish, but the chef had given the treatment to the poor fish. It was charred black; and I could have used the fish for my barbeque as fuel! Needless to say I was livid, what a waste of good Karimeen (Karimeen is a backwater fish, which is found very deep in the water and caught by expert fishermen without the aid of nets). Deep-frying a fish is an absolute no no for me, the classical method of frying fish is to marinate for long hours and shallow fry slowly on a tawa. Compulsions may be driving these restaurateurs to adopt such abhorring methods. Incidentally, the best fish fry you can nibble on can be found in Fish Land, situated in Majestic area. The CG fish curry is passable; there are umpteen versions of fish curry found across the country and it is unfair to compare this versatile dish. Nonetheless, the fish curry (Allepey Fish curry) of Karavalli is the best I have tasted till date anywhere in the country. So folks, CG fails my litmus test as far as a seafood joint is concerned, there are several other seafood joints in Bangalore that offer authentic regional seafood. Some of them are Kudla (in Ramanshree Hotel, Next to Woodlands), Kubay, Padi Pura (both in Koramangala) and above all Karavalli.

Refreshing Bar called Coconut Grove
Aug 28, 2003 12:34 AM5408 Views

Review : Situated on the busy Church Street, it is the most frequented bar. Salubrious and calm place for a relaxed chat over a splash of drink. Favourite meeting place for friends for memorable moments of togetherness. Ideal location- sandwiched between the busy MG Road and the one-way Church Stree, it lures office goers and people visiting the shopping centres around this place. Comfortable - Easy approach from the MG Road as well as Church Street connected by crescent road; Hospitable environs - The exterior and internal decor of the bar is enticing; Excellent service - The inhouse service is very warm, prompt and courteous; Soothing atmosphere - You would love to spend more time relaxing in the calm environs of this bar; Affordable - it is not harsh on your pocket either; Greenery around makes it very friendly. The bar is a must visit spot in Bangalore. I feel bars such as The Coconut Grove Bar are necessary in places like Bangalore where people have no time at the end of their day to share some moments with nature and friends alike.

Pros : warm salubrious spot

Cons: possible addiction

Get into the gro(o)ve !!
Sep 09, 2002 11:39 AM3853 Views

A really cool place if you are adventurous and like kerala food. The coconut palms and curteous waiters in kurta and mundu add to the ambience.

You may want to try the mutta appams (thin appams with an egg(bull's eyed) on top or ulli theeyal ( small onions in a brown gravy that's simply delicious) with boiled rice (try red rice only if you like that. the grains are big and neophytes have trouble in swallowing them ;-) )

The place is also slightly difficult to locate if you are new to bangalore. The road is also not the most well lit of roads, but it is sufficiently close to the city center. (or maybe I should say, it is right at the heart of the city.)

Uuuuggggghhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!
Sep 03, 2002 10:23 AM4961 Views

Dont u dare call urself a kerala joint... dirty stuff and the food served is like the stuff u get on handcarts on the roadside....even worse I wud say....

u gotta learn to cook kerela stuff from the guy who runs the kerala food joint in jeevan bima nagar

seriously send ur cooks to get trained there for the appam stew....

the chicken stew u served me last time was like sweet corn soup.. and so disgusting.. n was wondering how to eat sweet corn soup with appams....

ur biryani is uggghh.... man the only good thing about your restaurant is the bottled soft drinks and mineral water wink wink

u r not surviving bcoz of the food u serve, but only bcoz of the location ok.. so buck up and dont put kerela to shame..........

Authentic Kerala cuisine, good ambience but pricey
Jun 10, 2002 12:44 PM5797 Views

Overpriced is the word that comes first. The food is good especially the Kerala dishes and the ambience is quite different. It's nice to be here atleast once and despite the price I've done it twice.

Two kerala appams for Rs. 25 is a bit too much, but being a glutton I could stop only with three such plates, but that's the food here. Ideal for taking someone out on romance or business. The place is very quiet and they have small enclosures with just one table. During day time avoid the outdoors since the fans only blow the warm wind.

The place is situated on Church Street right behind Food World. From FoodWorld walk towards Anil Kumble Circle (St. Marks Road Circle) and take the first left down. When you reach Church Street take another left and within 50 metres you will find Coconut Grove on your left.

Nearest parking places are Church Street (it is a one way and hence it's better to enter from Brigade Road or from MG Road after FoodWorld) and MG Road.

I would recommend reserving a seat atleast one hour before especially if you don't want to wait.

Traditional joint
Jan 30, 2001 11:09 AM4190 Views

This food joint is one of my favourites !!! OK you have to like kerela food... its got a distinct flavour to it !!! And I love it ....

This place is situated on Church Street . It's got a very good decor. You feel like you are in Kerela.. the management has tried its best and succeeded in bringing a small part of Kerela to this joint.. its not only the food, talk about decor, ambience, the dress of the waiters, to the servings ... they serve in banana leaves placed in a steel plate ..

You can see lots of foreigners here .. well they get the taste of India here, obviously.... booze also flows pretty smoothly .. and the price is pretty ok .... its not very expensive nor very cheap .. I would say that you could go there during the weekends !!! You could take your clients , or your friends or your family !!! you can take your date too !! its a great place .. the lighting , the food , its a good combination....

Good atmosphere
Dec 19, 2000 08:10 PM4429 Views

There is nothing really all tyhat great about Coconut Grove . The prices are a bit over the top , but I guess in the nd what you are really paying for is the ambience .

You are going to enjoy this place even more if u sit outside . . The flavour is distictively south Indian ( Keralite & chettinad ) .

I guess the main reason these guys are still surviving is because there are so very few restaurants that give really good quality keralite food .

I have to admit that thoughmost of the items are bit over priced , you cant really complain about the quality of the food . The food is excellent .

Try any of the curry items with appams , they are really good here . For drnks I would suggest the thalassery time bomb , which is a real knock out drink !!

You'l probably have a to wait for 20 minutes or more for yyour order , but I guess the food is worth the wait ...

reservations may be required on weekends ..
