Himmini Dam Best Tourist Places

When we talk about voyaging, It's all slope stations and shorelines as far away as we can bear. On the off chance that you are from Cochin in Kerala, for the most part individuals favor as an escape slope stations like Munnar, Ponmudi, Wynad, Ooty, kodai and so on or Plain visitor destinations like untamed life park in Thekkady, Back waters of Kumarakom or Alapuzha. On the other hand a hefty portion of the bunch resorts and home stays dabbing the whole scene of Kerala.

The vast majority never at any point consideration to visit the colorful districts close them. The central component being - What would you be able to brag of .when you meet you companions, Somebody you know has been there. and so on. Relaxation has turned into a thing to be marketed. The tourism dealers misusing the need of a man or lady to bloat and brag of having been to these spots.

Well do we really determine any genuine delight out of it for the cash spent. Obviously we do .a senseless joy of having'been there'.

Returning to the point, I chose to assume family to a position only 30 Km from my wife's familial home in Trichur District of Kerala. It was not borne out of any of those awesome considerations shared previously. Maybe a functional choice emerging out of confined time and plain interest. The Chimmini Dam and the woods save. It is based on the Chimmini stream starting in the western ghats and moving through the Thissur locale of Kerala and joining the Karuvannur waterway. It is 20 Km from Amballur intersection, just before Thrissur on NH 47 towards east.

The way was beautiful through manors of elastic and teak and so forth. You have to take a go from the woods check post before entering the backwoods range. The dam in itself is very little to say in regards to. A fairly old development. However the entire spot had a desolate vibe to it.

This is one of the eco tourism projects of Kerala Tourism.  Punda Peak is the highest view point in this western valley.Ready for a trekking expedition which you cannot forget for your lifetime?  Want to get immersed in the mesmerizing woods?  If yes, then visit Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary which has flowers, birds, a lake, a dam, a peak etc.  Varieties and varieties of colourful flowers and butteflies, will surely add colours of joy to your trip. The Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary is in Varantharappilly Village, about 30 Km from Thrissur town, Thrissur District, Kerala.himmini Wildlife Sanctuary, which is about 85 Sq Km in area, lies between two wildlife sanctuaries namely Peechi- Vazhani and Parambikulam, on the western slopes of Nelliyampathy.  There is also an artificial lake of 10 Sq Km in area and 20 m in depth.

The forest department has organized a half day trek which covers the outer ring of the sanctuary while in a one day trip; tourists can go deep into the forests.  With more than 160 species around you, trekking or camping here will be like ‘nature opening its treasure’.  It will be an added advantage for those who can see the India’s largest butterfly called “blue mormon”.

Enjoy innovations with bamboo rafting trips which extend from 2 hr to a full day.  Bamboo rafting on full moon nights also called as “Moonlight Sonata” will surely be a golden opportunity for lifetime. If anyone wishes to stay at the closest destination to the dam, then Inspection Bungalow will be the option for you or else you can stay in Amballoor Village which is just 12 Km away from the sanctuary.  There are 3 rooms and 1 dormitory in the Inspection Bungalow where Rs.600 is charges for one room(2 persons) and Rs.80 per head for dormitory(40 beds).

When we speak of travelling, It's all hill stations and beaches as far off as we can afford. If you are from Cochin in Kerala, generally people prefer as a get away hill stations like Munnar, Ponmudi, Wynad, Ooty, kodai etc or Plain tourist destinations like wildlife park in Thekkady, Back waters of Kumarakom or Alapuzha. Or many of the myriad resorts and home stays dotting the entire landscape of Kerala.

Most people never ever care to visit the exotic locales near them. The deciding factor being - What can you boast of ..when you meet you friends, Somebody you know has been there.. etc. Leisure has become a commodity to be marketed..The tourism sellers exploiting the need of a man or woman to bloat and boast of having been to these places.

Well do we actually derive any real pleasure out of it for the money spent. Of course we do ...a silly pleasure of having 'been there'.

Coming back to the topic, I decided to take family to a place just 30 Km from my wife's ancestral home in Trichur District of Kerala. It was not borne out of any of those great thoughts shared above. Rather a practical decision arising out of restricted time and plain curiosity. The Chimmini Dam and the forest reserve. It is built on the Chimmini river originating in the western ghats and flowing through the Thissur district of Kerala and joining the Karuvannur river. It is 20 Km from Amballur junction, just before Thrissur on NH 47 towards east.

The path was scenic through plantations of rubber and teak and what not. You need to take a pass from the forest check post before entering the forest area. The dam in itself is not much to say about. A rather old construction. However the whole place had a lonely feel to it.

You could trek through the wooded area around the dam and come to the other side of the reservoir. We had bought lunch from home and had it in midst of the forest. Mind you there are no restaurants in the area and only small shops providing snacks and soft drinks. The loneliness of the area was breathtaking. I took some really good pictures with a cheap Sony digital camera. The credit goes to the locale alone by photography skills being nothing more than click..click. Pictures speak more than words and I dont seem to be much good at words too. Since only two pics could be attached to the article, I have uploaded few others to my profile.

Since my travel partners included two less than 5 year olds and a senior lady - mom in law, the idea of a long trek into the forest was abandoned. Still it was good fun. But couple of friends had been to the forest reserve a week before for trekking which was great fun and little terrifying when they got lost though they had a forest guide with them. But not to worry the forest officials will seek you out and return you back. Only you will have to listen to an earful from them. So sayeth they.

Am going to be back in Chimmini next time prepared for THE TREK...Hope the forest dept has helicopters !

Cheers !!!

Have a great day !

Luv, Rajat
