The world has not forgotten the horrors of that fateful day when the World Trade Center towers were hit using hijacked jetliners causing massive destruction and loss of lives. Rumors are now floating that the next target will be London and the strategic attack will make the 11th September attack seem like a prelude of the horrors to come.
“The Cell” is another fast paced thriller from Colin Forbes, writer of best sellers like “By Stealth”, “Precipice” and “Double Jeopardy”. In this book, the basic idea of a threat against London is realistic, in the light of the recent terrorist attacks in America. The plot of this action packed adventure featuring Tweed and his team of SIS agents had me glued till the last page.
The main characters
Tweed – An ex-detective heading SIS
Paula Grey - Assistant to Tweed, an able and observant agent.
Bob Newman – Retired foreign correspondent, part of Tweed’s squad.
Jules Beaurain - ex-police Commissaire in Brussels.
Other than these four main characters, we also have Monica, Marler, Butler and Neild who are an integral part of Tweed’s highly trained staff.
The book starts with the mysterious disappearance of the Minister of Security’s wife. Tweed’s search for her leads him and his team to a weird village called Carpford, hidden away in the North Downs. During investigations, the strange behavior of the inhabitants of this secluded village causes Tweed and Paula some suspicion.
The search for the missing lady and rumors that the Al- Qaeda is planning an attack far greater in scope than the Sept. 11th tragedy keep Tweed and his men on their toes. Tweed is convinced that the mastermind behind the previous attack and as well as this one is either an American or an Englishman and it is his devilish brain at work once again.
In search for information, Paula and Beaurain travel to Milan, an ex Al- Qaeda base. But the Mastermind seems to know their every move and cold-blooded assassins attempt to murder them within hours of reaching.
Who is the rider of the suspicious motorcycle that visits Crapford at night to deliver parcels? Why are people disappearing? Tweed knows that time is running out and he must find out the traitor before disaster strikes.
The plot leads us to -
Victor Warner, conceited Minister of Security; Why is he not more concerned about his wife’s disappearance?
Peregrine Palfry, Warner’s eavesdropping aide; Does he know something?
Eva Brand, beautiful and enigmatic; Why is she so tightlipped about her father?
Billy and Martin, two brothers completely different from each other; Are they trying to hide something?
Drew Franklin, influential gossip writer; Is it he who the mysterious nightrider visits each night?
Margesson, fanatical preacher; Is he a different person hiding behind the facade?
Any of these people could be involved in the conspiracy to devastate London. But where are the clues? Key informants are killed mercilessly, one after the other before they can pass on any information. When and where is the attack going to be launched? The only clue Tweed has is a strange sketch found on a dead informant. Can the Al-Qaeda be stopped before they can succeed in their heinous plan?
Well, well, I am not going to tell you the climax of this book else it will spoil the fun when you read it. Read this fast paced entertainer to find whether Tweed could save the life of the thousands of Londoners and what was the master criminal’s indigenous plan to destroy London. All I can say is that the climax is as gripping as the rest of the book.
