Cafe Mondegar
Apr 17, 2016 06:27 PM4301 Views

One may believe that given the area, hanging out at Cafe Mondegar is an extravagance yet reconsider however me and my sibling who some of the time is my ATM(wink wink) chose to enter this pre-autonomy period Cafe began by the Germans.

Without giving a lot of a contemplated how overwhelming it might be on our pockets or rather her pocket and we wound up having a standout amongst the most essential days of our lives without paying much. The menu shows costs that are comprehensive of charges so 90/ - for a veg. sandwich is not in any manner exorbitant. I was entirely astounded to see such evaluating on the grounds that was not anticipating that it should be so shabby.

Discuss the taste and we don't had anything to gripe, The nourishment was tasty, the amount was route more than what I sought after. Do attempt the caramel custard its eminent. I am not a caramel fan for the most part but rather this one was overwhelming. I couldn't get enough of painting on Aamchi Mumbai by the fanciful visual artist Late. Mario Miranda. The main frustration I have, is that being a veggie lover I didn't have much alternatives to look over.

Vintage Hangout Place
May 01, 2015 03:58 PM6284 Views

I have been to this place number of times and no matter how many times I visit this place I  always like to come back here.

The place reminds of my college days when colaba was our regular hangout place. It is one of the best places in town were you can order anything and not be disappointed. Its got a very funky ambience with the huge graffiti work on the walls and gives you a fresh feel.

The service here is also reasonable, and the staff is cooperative and give good food suggestions.

Overall it is a must visit for anyone looking to treat their tastebuds. Kudos to Cafe Mondegar.

Nothing like it

Staying in town myself, cafe mondegar has always been our late night adda. Even though the sitting arrangement is a little cramped up with no fancy decors, it is always full. Because of the food and drinks they serve.

One of the coolest things here is they have their menu printed and placed under the glass of each table. So you need not wait for the waiter to give you the menu.

Their beer stored in wooden barrels is a must try. Its mild but you would still enjoy the taste. They also serve variety of wines and champagnes here. To go with the beer you gotta order the french fries covered with cheese and chicken wings.

We finished the meal with a chicken pasta in orange sauce and pizza baked to perfection.

This place is popular and also full with foreigners.

Cafe Mondegar : Great place to chill with friends
Apr 17, 2015 04:05 PM6664 Views

Cafe Mondegar is one of the iconic restaurants in Colaba Mumbai and one of the places I have lunch at whenever I go to Colaba causeway.

The atmosphere is very nice and playful and you can hear the chatter in the air.

Pros:

  • Good food at decent prices

  • Get a variety of options

  • Its decor and crowd

Cons:

  • not many options if you do not want alcoholic beverages.

  • Its always crowded and you will have to wait

  • The tables are tiny and you are siting very close by to the next table

Verdict: Visit it with friends who want to drink or want to experience a piece of Mumbai.

Gool ol' charm
Apr 14, 2015 02:09 PM6565 Views

This is one of the best décors I’ve seen in an Indian restaurant that perfectly gives you the vibes of an American bar. The wall art is just perfect! Amazing quirky wall art with graffiti that looks splendid, hustling and bustling of crowd and all the chattering noise makes the place look just perfect. The place is always filled with cool people, foreigners and lots of travelers.

Frankly, I can bet on the food they serve if I have to take my guests visiting Mumbai for the first time. Their mix grill steak is a must try for meat lovers. You have sausages to ham to chicken to bacon etc etc. For the veggies go for the pastas, you will not be disappointed at all. Steaks do stand apart in their menu. I guess you can ignore the burgers and sandwiches if you have a menu giving varieties of steaks and pastas.

This place has some of the most amazing meat delicacies in town and I was perfectly sure of what I am going to have here. Between the Minute Steak and the Polo Alla Pepe, I wasn’t really sure as to try which one.

Anyway, it was a great experience and since then, I have frequented this place quite a few times.

Reasonable and yummy food and lovely ambience

One might think that given the location, hanging out at Cafe Mondegar is a luxury but think again though me and my brother who sometimes is my ATM(wink wink) decided to enter this pre-independence period Cafe started by the Germans.

Without giving much of a thought about how heavy it may be on our pockets or rather her pocket and we ended up having one of the most memorable days of our lives without having to paying much. The menu displays prices that are inclusive of taxes so 90/- for a veg. sandwich is not at all costly. I was quite surprised to see such pricing because was not expecting it to be so cheap.

Talk about the taste and we had nothing to complain, The food was delicious, the quantity was way more than what I hoped for. Do try the caramel custard its heavenly. I am not a caramel fan generally but this one was irresistible. I couldn't get enough of mural on Aamchi Mumbai by the legendary cartoonist Late. Mario Miranda. The only disappointment I have, is that being a vegetarian I didn't have much options to choose from.

All those hard core meat lovers(see bacon) and beer lovers out there do visit this Cafe. You will certainly not be disappointed. The place is a treat in itself and food and pricing are like the icing on the cake(wink).

Fun Ambiance!

We were at the Kala Ghoda festival recently and after enjoying it for quite a few good hours we were hungry for some food and we headed straight to this place. The place is so famous that it is almost a landmark in the area. Every one knows about this place.

They serve some awesome sandwiches.

I have been to this place quite a few times and I just love it. You should visit it too.

World Cup+Drinks+Food
Feb 20, 2015 01:57 AM7292 Views

This has to be one hell of a combination. The World Cup, chilled Beer and Food. Of course I am talking about Cafe Mondegar which has to be the best place on Earth and in Mumbai.

Whenever I meet my friends, we someway or the other end up going to this place, sit in our favorite corner and down a few beers along with the yummy food that they serve here. The ambiance of the place is extremely awesome with reasonable prices and friendly staff. When I am here I always have their French Fries which come in a huge portion and taste heavenly with the dipping sauce they come with.

Along with this, the other things I enjoy here are- Grilled Chicken Sausages, Onion Rings with Schezwan Sauce, Fish Kalimiri, Mixed Fried Rice, American Chop Suey and just like the list of food goes on so does my list of favorites keeps getting longer.

Everyone has to visit this place at least once and enjoy this heaven on Earth called Cafe Mondegar.

My Rating- 5/5!

Mondegar Makes one feel nostalgic
Sep 12, 2012 01:35 PM11458 Views

One place I enjoy chilling out with my friends is Mondegar. I like pitcher and lots of friends around. I have been going to mondy's since my college days and each and every time there is memorable. so many things and laughter shared and so many good memories. The place is cramped and once will notice the chairs too close to each other.

The food is average but id one has to chill mondegar of the place.

A happening place... and close to city centre

During my recent visit to India, had breaky at Mondy's and it was great... love all those wall pictures... very upbeat themes...decent restaurant where I could go alone or with family, good wholesome food, great service with a smile...

My cereal, fresh orange juice and coffee were made to perfection, my friend had a club sandwich which was freshly prepared and it was delicious...  I saw many other tourists having their breaky there too and all seemedo be pleased....prices were extremely reasonable (which is a bonus since the food was so good)... The restaurant was clean, which is such a plus point with the patrons and the service was courteous and with a smile.......... If one is looking for good wholesome meals, then Mondegar is the place to go, without a doubt... don't even think twice....

Would visit it again, any time I am back in India...

Sunday aftrenoon well spent
Mar 19, 2007 10:23 PM8029 Views

Was looking for a good place to spend a Sunday afternoon, now since I'm from chennai and do go to mumbai quiet often on work, seeing around that place almost eventually happens, I like to move around on my own, and just stumbled upon Mondegars at Colaba, got in becoz of the music that was pouring out.it just drew me in, & then the ambience was so old school, I loved the ambience I spent around 3 hours there & iwth the music that was being played, the feeling was completely  relaxed and bohemian

This place seemed like a congregation of like minded, with only two things on mind…beer and music.

Now that is the camaraderie that beer spreads around. I would recommend to every body who has been a child of seventies, with a free spirit.

Go there, have beer, feel the music and live the moment.I think that’s life! A sunday afternoon really well spent.

CAFE MONDEGAR or Mondy’s as it is popularly known as is next to Regal Cinema, it is one of the lively cafe and popular hangouts for Indians as well as tourist and it is usually filled with college students. Draught beer, by the pitcher or glass, loud CD juke box and murals by a famous Goan cartoonist are the main attractions, though the small tables can make life difficult for women on their own.The jukebox at the cafe has a wide selection of jazz, hindi pop, rock and englishpop songs. The walls are adorned with cartoons. The cafe is open till midnight, has a variety of beer Indian brand as well as imported. The food is very good, the cafe is famous for its Pepper Steak, Steak Boti. Cafe has wide range of Continental and Chinese food on its menu, for starters and breakfast.

Cafe Mondegar- popularly known as Mondy's by all, is a cool place to hang out. Be it any time of the day u can actually land up in Mondys with friends, family, couples or be it anyone...

The ambience is very lively with old british style decor n huge cielings, old furniture, cartoons all over the walls, loud music playin behind, n if u wana watch formula1 races or matches they hav special arrangements on those days...

During morning u usually find people coming alone, have breakfast, read newspapers n have a nice quiet morning..but during the day the place is usually packed mostly with foreigners who lave to hang out there n have glass or 2 of chilled beer...other than that menu includes meals of all types..chinese, sandwiches, burgers etc..

Chilled BEER served here
May 06, 2003 04:07 PM7506 Views

Cafe Mondegar or popularly known as Mondee's as we all Mumbaites know is a no-nonsense, retro, busy, famous, cool hang around joint bang in the start of colaba causeway. Though only beer is served here, food here is great too. Ever tried the steaks , burgers or simply the french fries.. all are quality food. The place is done up clasically and it has simply remained like that for ages. I can recollect my college days when we could afford to hang out here may be once a while but eversince I remember this place has remained the way it was.

The staff are also polite and decent and will go out of their way to honor your requests.

Then theres this nice JUKE* box which we all love to play our requests and it comes with a price tag of JUST rupees 5 per song which is its speciality.. u can see q's of people waiting for their turn to play their fav numbers. they have a pretty good collection.

Then painted on the walls are mumbai's famous toon painter ''MARIO MIRANDA''s touch with beautiful one liner's like '' WHAT IS DRINKING - MERE PAUSE FROM THINKING'' etc.

Overall this place is great if you wanna get nostalgic over dome beers, or just go for a couple of beers & music or simply hang around this is an all event hang out joint with a seperate section which is air-conditioned called as the INN SIDE STORY..

Would love to visit this place off n on.

Cheers

Irish coffee, anyone?
Jan 03, 2003 12:16 PM8072 Views

An old jukebox and a pitcher of beer... that's Cafe Mondegar for you! The ideal place to hang out with friends, Cafe Mondegar or, as most of us like to call it, 'Mondies' is right next to Regal, at Colaba. It's the perfect pre and post movie hangout. And you don't have to worry if you detest beer and smokes like I do, Mondies has something for everyone.

Mario Miranda's sketches adorn all the walls, depicting people smoking, drinking, leching and generally popping out of their clothes. Not the ideal place for families, the more trendy, rowdy crowds would fit right in.

It's a tiny place, with tables cramped next to each other and people smoking their lungs out. The little air-conditioned section is a better idea for asthmatics and couples, you don't have to yell sweet nothings into each others' ears. But if you're out for some loud fun with a group nothing beats the outer section.

Don't leave Mondies without trying out their Irish coffee, which is definitely the best in Bombay. In cute lil wine glasses, it's all frothy and strong, and gives you that warm feeling inside. Their pastas and burgers are pretty delicious too. You should pass on their paneer steak though, it leaves a lot to be desired. Overall the food is pretty decent, what it lacks is made up by the ambience.

You can spend hours there, over smokes, pitchers of beer, popping nuts and talking expressively. You're bound to be surrounded by firangs who yell to make themselves understood. The service is friendly and fast. You can even pick up some Mondegar memorabilia if the place strikes a chord or you're an out-of-towner. They have Mondegar t-shirts, mugs, and what nots, just proving that this cafe is a landmark in Bombay.

Beauty & the Beerholder!
Oct 21, 2002 12:50 AM13494 Views

“Reality is an illusion caused by Alcohol Deficiency!” one of the most hilarious quote ever written, greets you the moment you’ve just landed up, at this most centrally located pub in Colaba and before you settle down you realize instantly that there is something in the air of this pub besides the endless smoke.

Café Mondegar is a quaint, old Irani style pub I’ve been visiting for the past several years and nothing seems to have really changed about this place - the old fashioned tables, chairs, the chequered table cloth , the paper menu tucked under the table glass top …nothing has really changed. Looking at the interiors one gets the feeling that time has stood still here - the cartoon wall frescoes by Mario Miranda look as fresh as a daisy, the old juke box ( Café Mondegar was the first to have a jukebox) somehow doesn’t seem anachronistic without a DJ and the juice bar with fresh fruits hanging doesn’t seem so out of the place at all. The only inclusion of technology in past 10 years has been a 29 inch color TV and that too is switched on only when India is batting or F1 is on. Being retro seems to be the forte of the pub and that shows in the choice of the music too – for Rs. 5 per song one can listen to the fabulous retro rock – Guns & Roses, U2,Bryan Adams, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, R.E.M…and no lounge, techno, hiphop , trance music please !And even if you are shy of playing your request, chances are that you would get to listen to summer of 69, sweet child of mine and comfortably numb as everyone seems to play these requests .

The pub serves only beer – pitcher and bottled both . Off late Vodka Kick – a vodka beer has also been introduced. No rotgut is served as they don’t want you to reek like a street drunkard next morning! The place is frequented by firangs , shippies, hippies, young girls in large groups and professionals alike. The service is prompt and the owner Mr. Hoshang Yezdegardi is a very warm ,friendly and a chatterbox bawaji – only hitch his jukebox keeps him busy forever as coins keep getting stuck inside ! Poor guy was not even aware that Tara Deshpande has written a poem titled “Café Mondegar” in her latest book (By the way I’ve yet to get him the book as promised in a drunken stupor!).

The only serious letdown is the loo as I’ve always believed that to know the real class of a place one must first visit the loo and if one can have a hearty leak , definitely a hearty drink/meal too will follow .The place on weekends is packed like sardines and chances are that with blaring rock music you wouldn’t be able to decipher the lip movements of your companion across the table but of the svelte beauty sitting right behind you on the adjoining table. Moreover you could easily qualify for the national gymnastics team if you attempt to walk to the loo without bumping on other blokes. On hot lazy afternoons Café Mondegar is flooded with firang tourists and if you spot someone with a Lonely Planet India Travel Guide and if you are as passionate about traveling and adventure as I am then you’ve just managed to strike an animated conversation with a fellow traveler and perhaps have made a lasting friend too.

The atmosphere of the pub indeed is so friendly that many times one is tempted to say the famous line of Humphrey Bogart from the movie Casablanca: “ Of all the gin joints ( read beer pubs) in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine !!” Of course that’s another story that “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beer(!)holder!!”

Cafe Mondegar !
Jul 04, 2002 01:17 PM7904 Views

There is this place near Regal Cinema which has a small dirty board saying ''Cafe Mondegar''. It has a very small, jam packed floor space. As the name suggests its for ''only beer'' people and the classy looks really rock!

They have added a Jukebox a few years and play some really good numbers. On weekends its crowded to the extent of allowing you half of your normal elbow space, but still the open atmosphere and crowd make it a wonderful place to spend your Saturday night.

Dont forget to note the Graffiti on the wall and do check out ''Fish Finger'' from the menu !

CAFE MONDEGAR - THE-FEEL-AT-HOME-CAFE
Feb 03, 2001 05:16 PM10077 Views

Situated near Colaba Causeway, Café Mondegar is one-stop to a noise free, smoke-free, 'Only Beer', family kinda pub. A typical open-windowed non-claustrophobic, 'susegaad&' café, feels like u sipping a beer in ur own balcony.

Frequented more by the middle-aged, don't be surprised to catch up with an elderly female parsees sipping away on their beer, or a bunch'a locals, trying to bum a just arrived hippie in town.

The major draw to the café is 2 imported Juke boxes that have a wide variety of flip-turn CD's from the swinging 60's to the entertaining 80's to the latest on the dance/pop/trance scene.

At rs. 5 a song and unless you plan to deplete the entire stock of Mondegars in an hour or 2, would you be advised to play the jukebox, becoz it's a long wait for ur song to be cued and to be played.

Mondegar has a groovy ambience of famed Mario Miranda's cartoons adorning the walls. A must try on the menu is the chicken grilled sandwich. Demand ur wafers with it if it came sans.

If you in a group and u’ll plan to drink into the wee hours of the morning(again last order is 11.00pm) then try this stunt out.

After each beer, don’t let the waiter take the empty bottle away. Line up all the used bottles in a row. Not only does it give u the extra kick when u paying the bill (besides the bill amount kicking you), but u can show-off the number of beers you drank, and last but not the least u cant get cheated on how much u’ll drank.

Table service at Mondegars is slow, as not only is the number of waiters are inversely disproportionate to the pubbers, but the degree of politeness of the waiters is directly proportional to the number of beers ordered. ( Not forgetting the curses after the piddly tip u leave)

Mondegar is one of the few pubs that do there own PR in their own pub. Mondegar t-shirts and beer mugs are on sale with an average price.

If you strictly a beer drinker and u strictly listen to only the songs u like, then Café Mondegar is strictly ur kinda watering-hole.

Don’t forget the do’s and the dont’s. Have fun….Hic!!!
