Bose: The Forgotten Hero Songs Movie Reviews

A.R.Rehman at its patriotic best
May 10, 2005 02:08 PM3647 Views

At first glance the movie looks like another B-grade movie but browse through the brochure and u will see names like shyam benegal and A.R.Rehman, immediately the movie comes in A-grade.Such is the class of A.R.Rehman and it shows in the music too.

Director: Shyam Benegal

Music: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar

Singers: A.R. Rahman, Sonu Nigam and others

Number of Songs: 20

Rahman opens the CD with his own vocals in Aazaadi, The Chorus in the background adds to the magic of the song. One of the finest songs.

Kadam Kadam Badhaye Jaa is an fantabulous rendition of the old classic. definitely raises your patriotic feeling. stupendous song

Hum Dilli Dilli Jaayenge is another marching song from the movie including the kadam kadam badaye ja. Another masterpiece from the great musician.

Ekla Chalo is a bengali song done with a good orchestra support.

Des Ki Mitti about Subhash Chandra Bose reminiscing about his land. Once again, Sonu Nigam shines with his hypnotic rendition.

Ghoomparani is the last of the lyrical tracks in the album. A soft, melodious number with some lines in Bengali.

The rest of the tracks are themes from the movie depicting the various phases of the great INDIAN Bose.

Overall the album may not be hitting the charts becos of its not very commercial but it will definitely win the hearts of the critics.

Excellent Album!!!

Wooohooo

Greetings,

Like others, I say yet another stupendous performance by ARR. He makes me wonder if India's already found a replacement to fill the void left behind after demise of Shri R.D Burman (Pancham da). He's been woo'ing us since his first Hindi film, Roja. There were times when we (me & my friends) used to only listen to him. terrific music, novel ideas of making music. I personally think ARR did complete justice to the effectiveness & penetration of the film by giving the kind of music he gave. To prove it's effectiveness, I asked the DJ to put the CD of ''Bose: The forgotten hero'' on a couple of days ago giving a perfect ''Grande Finale'' to my party that we threw for our friends... there were about 40 odd people in the banquet hall & by the time the CD was done with, I could very well see all the hands waving to the music, a few lighters being lit, applause all around. A few girls in the crowd literally crying on hearing the songs ''Azadi'' & ''Desh ki mitti''. I guess the next party we decide to throw, we better keep it on theme of patriotism. Jai Hind.

A GREAT AR RAHMAN ON A GREAT HERO
Apr 22, 2005 01:11 AM2275 Views

Rahman has a knack of motivating his listeners especially with his patriotic themes, be it his 'Vande Maataram', 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh' or Swades. Bose has 8 songs that have lyrics and the rest are BGMs(background music pieces).

Rahman has sung one solo AZAADI and also in the lead in another(ZIKR) while Sonu Nigam has sung two fantastic melodies. Sapna Mukherji sings a melifluous Bengali-Hindi song, the lullaby ''GHOOMARAPANI'' which can easily put a child off to sleep!!

By now even a five year old in India can recognize how Rahman's music sounds. Even though he tries new things with every movie, you can see a definite pattern. The use of warm pads (a keyboard patch) that is used in the background through out the song, to signify chords, which is Rahman's signature and is being mimicked by all the upcoming musicians. Then there are the patterns or loops like the Shehnai piece in Swades that comes in the song 'yeh jo des hai tera'. Rahman's ensemble of techno bass riffs with live orchestration has a been a welcoming factor for his listeners.

The album starts with the best of AR RAHMAN (his solos are every time the best!!!) the song AZAADI. it is just marvellous. Simply Not enough words to appreciate this track!! Although it seems much better with the video yet it is no less without it!! the next comes a stunning performance ''KADAM KADAM BADHAAYE JA''. another wonderful song...... it really raises the spirits of a person and for once the person is totally flooded and engrossed in the feelings of patriotism, courage and heroism. I wouldn't be surprised if there are loads of people who after watching this film get themselves admitted into the Indian Army!!

the next song ''EKLA CHALO'' starts with bengali lyrics sung by Nachika Chakraborty and then there is awesome performance by Sonu nigam. the lyrics are simply great! the lyrics ''Tanha Rahi Apni Rah Chalta Jaayega, Ab to jo bhi hoga Dekha Jaayega....'' are sung wonderfully by sonu nigam. The Performance of Mumbai Film Choir in ''HUM DILLI DILLI JAAYENGE'' is great. this is also with a stunning background music lke KADAM KADAM BADHAAYE JA. the next DESH KI MITTI is also a union of wonderful lyrics and awesome singing. Probably this song would be the most striking for the NRIs!!! longing to get back to their motherland!!

ZIKR is another great performance with Islamic enchantings with the tempo rising from the beginning to thee end where it becomes extremely intense. GHOOMRAPANI is a sweet lullaby by Sapna Mukherjee and is the best song of its type(there was another one of this type from the movie ''SWADES'' - AHISTA AHISTA). In both, A.R. Rahman's Music Direction has been mind blowing. This album is another feather in his cap. The BGM is rather better seen with the screen shots. The songs are excellent. However, the heavy timpani and cymbals could have been used rarely.

After his performance in DES MERE DES in The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, VANDE MAATARAM, YE JO DES HAI TERA in Swades, and AZAADI in Bose the forgotten hero, I think his singing, especially his solo performances are as much mind blowing as his music. From this point, I can expect more movies coming up with such themes and for my part, I would buy his albums blindly. My best wishes are with this film, hope it makes to the top ones in the box office and I seriously wish this film does well coz it'll serve as an encouragement for other directors to make films on such themes. I would like the people to be responsive and not finish such a great movie unsatisfactorily like they did with swades. for AR RAHAMAN, my best wishes are always with him!! Keep Going man!! you are a great singer as well!!!!

Class Personified.....Again!
Apr 16, 2005 02:34 AM2401 Views

Time and again, when I listen to this maestro from Chennai, I feel he would

deliver a music which would be way past his prime, and time and again, to my happiness, he continues to prove me wrong. Patriotism anyone? ''The Legend Of Bhagat Singh'' and ''Vande Mataram'' were brilliant, he gives you an album of complete class which reminds me once again of his brilliant music. Rehman himself admitted that with modern synchs and Korgs, it is definitely easy for one to create the music that he gives birth to. But that's way way easier said than done. He delivers another piece of class.

Aazadi.

Starts off with a background which in chorus in the opera fashion with the words ''Jai Hind'' being hummed. Trust on Rehman to bring that effect of the movie into the scene. It is perfect, perfect to show the cross between the West and East, in other words the time during the Indian freedom struggle. With a great piano running and the show stealer in the unique and brilliant voice of Rehman, he again shows his vocal capabilities hitting the highest notes with some great drums and classic Rehman with variation in his background score. Definitely as good as ''Des Mere'' from ''The Legend...''

Kadam Kadam.

A brilliant song which would be picturized on the INA, it seems simple but you would give your heart out for this one with the some great variations between the trumpet, the drums and various other instruments are a delight to which you would give your heart out to. And the best part is the Lyrics by the ''tag-team partner'' of Rehman in Javed Akhthar with the starting line ''Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja, Khusi Ke Geet Gaayeja, Yeh Zindagi Hai Kaum Ki, Tu Kaum Pe Lootaye Ja.''

Ekla Chalo.

Taking a step back, Rehman brings in Sonu Nigam into the picture with typical Rehman music with various bars to look out in the pitch as it varies from the lows to highs with a simple background score. It is a song wherein one needs to close his eyes and just feel the music as trust on Sonu Nigam to get all the feel to it emotionally, along with the background hummed by Nachiketa Chakraborty in Bengali and the lyrics, again which have been penned brilliantly, ''Tanha Rahee, Apne Raha Chalta jaayega.''

Hum Dilli Dilli Jaayenge.

Again, an army song which would surely increase your spirits which. An song which would be not as good as ''Kadam Kadam'' but would surely get you pumped up when you watch the movie as it is a perfect song for the climax.

Desh Ki Mitti.

Sonu Nigam continues with his magic. Another refreshing song with an emotional flavour to it in sync with the brilliant lyrics with some great rhetorical questions enned and some brilliant imagination. Sonu again delivers with his pin point variation in the pitches aided by Rehman. A song truly for the heart. Watch out for the Dholak in this one, the man is special.

Zikr.

A song which shows the Islamic side of things during the freedom struggle as

they pay their tributes to the fight. I wouldn't rate this song better than ''Piya

Haji Ali'' in ''Fiza'' as the variation, it is evident here again, with the great chance in the decibel levels periodically which are sure to get you sitting down on the floor and do a Qawwaali.

Ghoomparani.

A song that reminds on of Subash Chandra Bose returning to his beloved Bengal, this song is special. This song takes the album into a very different and welcome note as it is slow paced and one which you can hum along. Satyanarayan Mishra, she seems a cross between Kavitha Krishnamoorthy and Alka Yagnik as she has sung the Hindi versions with the voice of a nightingale. And the lyrics keeps getting better with ''Nindiya Rani, Spane de do.''

The Instrumentals.

Trust on Rehman to represent India abroad. Be it Warriors... or Lagaan, he has shown his versatility giving an Indian flavor to each of Hitler Theme which has a string military and disciplinarian flavor or the German military or

the Afghan theme with some great variations again.

Rehman again underlines why he is the best in this one and by no means past it. Put this one right up there in the charts all year long. He delivers again, big time. Watch out for the brilliantly penned lyrics as well, the duo have worked well again, picking up where they left off from Swades. This one is for patriotism, and a toast to classic Rehman almost at his best.

:: An Ode To Selflessness ::

===Zinda phir bhee rahega mera zameer

Jism ko maut bhee aa jaye agar!==

Introduction

Oh who are we? What are we, if not mere mortals, of lesser existence, restricted, reserved, narrowed and selfish? Oh what are our thoughts if not centered over a very small self? Look at us! Our actions, our dreams, our thoughts, our words, our goals, our principles… everything revolve around this one, single, insignificant self, pampering an inconsequential ego! Ah! We are but inferior beings, bound and tethered by chains and knots that we have tied to ourselves, living in a small, meaningless spheres, wrapped with ego, pretences, lies and greed!

Ah! I know you will refute me here! You will tell me tall tales of your selfless love, of your unprecedented generosity! But I ask you!—if that love, that generosity of yours were to disturb your existence in the slightest, discomfort you the least, bring you below the plinth you place yourself—then will you still love? Will you still give? Oh, I know you will not! nor will I! For we are pointless beings, locked inside walls of selfishness, enveloping a very small self! We cannot look beyond those limits!

Oh I’m nothing too great myself! I pity myself: yet refuse to change! I am worse! For I know how pointless I am, I know fully well how meaningless I am—yet I see glory in my insignificance! That is I! Pity me!

What infinite power it was that drove Subhash Chandra Bose is beyond our understanding. He was not a man—but far more than that. What need did he have to fight a losing battle, brave death at every step, bleed yet march, never sleep a wink, run the whole globe a fugitive in search of freedom? He could have so easily had an easy life as a teacher or a clerk, with a family, laughing children, and a loving wife! What need did he have to staunchly stand by his convictions?

Ah, what power it is of staunchly following a single conviction like a madman! It is beyond our understanding! For if our convictions disturb our happiness, we shall conveniently alter those convictions! But Subhashji did not! He stood by them, nurtured them, nourished them, strengthened them and fought for them!

The Review

I must beg your pardon for being unable to give out lyrics—I shall update this review the instant I find them! I have not watched the movie, nor its trailer: so in some sense. I expect some faults to creep into my thoughts: please excuse them. This is honestly a music review!

Aazadi

Voices: AR Rehman, Western Choir, Chennai

Clear, valiant and true promises to the land echo through every note, every word of this song. As AR Rehman pledges independence, in a surprisingly engaging voice, the tune slowly creeps into your heart. You must be a very heartless person if tears don’t break out of your eyes—A song that Subhashbabu lived and died for, “Azaadi…” is the first, and the brightest, jewel in this necklace of patriotism!

Kadam Kadam

Voices: Vijay Prakash, Mumbai Film Choir

Lyrics: Subhashchandra Bose

Inspired, gallant, unwavering and determined marching soldiers urge each other, egg each other on towards the frontier. “Kadam kadam badhaye ja… khushi ke geet gaye ja… Yeh zindagi hai kaum kii, to kaum pe lutaye jaa!” they cry, with dreams of an independent India, a rule of its own people, a clear sky of hope and happiness in their eyes, they march, uncaring for their own lives.

To sher-e-hind aage badh… Badein se phir bhee to na dar… udake dushmanon ka sar… Josh-e-watan badhaye ja!

Music that brings the scene of a marching legion, charged and inspired, towards their ultimate goal, a tune that sets your heart to a brave march for a moment, this song portrays something of the great, great, great spirit that drove Bose’s army. Bravo, Rehman, bravo Vijay!

Ekla Chalo

Voices: Sonu Nigam, Nachiketa Chakraborty

Sonu Nigam at his musical best, this song expresses, at the same time, the daredevilry and the grit of the soldiers that fought for the Indian National Army, and yet pure happiness—the happiness that each soldier craved for, and even lived, in embracing their martyrdom! Once again, it will take a heart of stone to hold back a torrent of tears as the tune warms, weakens and quickens your heart… this is a song sung to the soul!

Tanha raahi apnein raah chalta jayega… Ab to jo bhee hoga, dekha jayega…

Hum Dilli Dilli Jayenge

Voices: Mumbai Film Choir

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar

“Chalo Delhi!” echoed the forest-covered, tense valleys of eastern India, as the earth shook with the power of the footsteps of Indian National Army, not marching towards just the frontier with their weapons, but into every corner of the frightened and shocked British heart. As the choir declares “Hum dilli dilli jayenge”, you can feel that atmosphere cloud you, as the valleys of Myanmar, the trees, the sky stood in shocked silence, adoring silently the great determination of these handful Indians.

Hum goli khaa ke jhoomenge…

maut ko badhke choomenge…

Desh Ki Mitti

Voices: Sonu Nigam, Anuradha Sriram

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar

I have not watched the movie, nor the trailer, so I do not know when this song was supposed to have been sung. But I reckon Subhashji sang this song when he was at Berlin or Afghanistan, because he had been there organizing and mobilizing his troops. Sweetly, tenderly, gently, the song unfolds the soft, emotional side of this great man, this pillar of revolutionary courage! As this song progressed, I felt—Subhashji did not beg at the doors of heaven for soldiers to aid him—they were normal people, young, with dreams in their eyes, much like myself. And the thought that there were people like me who fought that battle—that is the inspiring thought that song left me with: and indeed every listener!

Zikr

Voices: AR Rehman, Rafi, Shaukar Ali

Rather frightening and very vigorous, I could not understand the emotions of this song for two reasons: one, I do not understand Urdu, in which this song is composed, and two, I do not know in what part of this song this movie was sung. But going by its tense tune, and it’s constant call to Allah, it must have been sung when the battle was going against the favor of these brave lions, who refused to give in to the enemy’s intimidation. Forgive me for my inaccuracy.

Ghoomparani

Voices: Sapna Mukherjee, Satyanarayan Mishra

Whoever Mukherjee is, has hardly been just to the sublime music of the rest of the music! Her voice is unsuitable to the scale in which she has sung the song, sounding as though she were shouting and squealing for some reason. Well, ek daag reh jaana hi thaa… kahin baaki Sangeet ko kisi ki nazar na lag jaye!

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!

AMEN!

(To the greater glory of God, so be it!)

Rehman.....the great
Apr 12, 2005 11:14 AM2021 Views

Wonderful!...superb!...gruesome!.....well I have many adjectives more to describe how I felt when I listen to this OST....right from the start ''Azadi''....evoked a feeling which is only matched by the Vandemataram album.

The patriotic songs like ''Dilli Jayenge'' and ''Kadam Kadam'' just make u feel that u r moving along with the INA force through the wetlands of Burma leaded by the one and only Bose....being a Bong I can tell u the concoction of Hindia and Bengali was very well made...in the song ''Ekla Chalo''..the Hindi lyrics ''Tanha Rahi'' very ably follows the words penned down by Tagore.....I was just stunned by the ''Durga Puja'' theme....having spent the first 20 years in Calcutta...the theme just made me relive all those golden Durga Puja days through the sound of ''dhak'' and ''kansar''.....it just shows how much homework Rehman puts in before delivering a soundtrack.....three cheers to him....

Just being a Sham Benegal film...I am expecting a lot from it...just not some patriotic titlation like ''Gadar'' and all those shit....but a true potrayal of history..and real unmasking of those god dammned politicians of those days who betrayed Bose....

Get hold of the OST if you haven't done it yet.....it's worth a million.

Netaji Subash Chandra Bose - The Forgotten Hero Mu
Apr 11, 2005 10:14 AM4517 Views

Bose-the forgotten hero, as the name suggests this movie is about Netaji?s life, involves three great film personalities Shyam Benegal, A R Rahman and Javed Akthar.

In my opinion two freedom fighters who were very electrifying in there approach towards struggle for freedom were Bhagat Singh and Netaji. Movies on these two personalities have a great chance on creating an impact on the current young generation (I feel the approach used by other ?ahimsa? greats are little bit impractical now and I don?t think we have that kind of mentality).

Two-year back, Music of Legend of Bhagat Singh (LOBS), scored by ARR, directed by Rajkumar Santhoshi and lyric by Sameer, was acclaimed critically and ARR got a very good name from the people of Punjab. For his excellent performance as Bhagat Singh, Ajay Devagan received national award for that year. ARR got filmfare award for his music.

After Roja, Bombay, Vandemataram, 1947 Earth, Lagaan, Swades, LOBS (wait for Aamir Khan?s ?The Rising?), ARR is the unanimous choice of all great directors when it comes to score for patriotic movies and period movies. A great musician will score for all situations and for all people. They don?t split the people as classes and masses. They give high quality music in a lucid and very understandable form so that even a layman can understand his score. This has been proved by our own KVM, MSV, Raja, R D Burman, Shankar Jaikishan and now by ARR. Now let us what is in store for us from ARR in this album?

This album has 7 songs and 13-theme music.

Aazadi sung by ARR, Western Choir Chennai. Genre: Patriotic Song.

Well sung by ARR. ?Jaya he? sung by the choir in the BG adds richness to the song. Brings a good patriotic feel. Depicts the feeling of the people who struggled for the freedom. Has the potential to be the next ?vandemataram?.

Kadam Kadam sung by Vijay Prakash, Mumbai Film Choir. Genre: March Fast song.

This was the theme song of INA, which portrays their desire to free India from British. The original version of this song itself will be very energetic. ARR as infused some brilliant percussion that elevates this song to next level. One of the best songs in the album.

Ekla Chalo sung by Sonu Nigam, Nachiketa Chakraborty. Genre: Soft Patriotic song.

Song starts with Bengali lyrics by Chakraborty (Ekla Chalo means walk alone. Got this from my Bengali friend) and then Sonu Nigam took charge in Hindi. Very very soothing. A song that grows on you.

Hum Dilli Dilli Jayenge sung by Mumbai Film Choir. Genre: March Fast song.

Another good song. This song shows the INA army men?s belief in Subhash and the importance to protect Delhi.

Desk Ki Mitti sung by Sonu Nigam, Anuradha Sriram Genre: Soft Patriotic song.

I feel this song will be featuring on Netaji. He explains his love towards his motherland. Well sung by Sonu Nigam and is one of the best melody in the last 2 to 3 yrs.

Zikr sung by ARR, Rafi, Rakeeb, Shaukar Ali. Genre: Muslim Prayer.

Just vintage. ARR not just as a composer but also as singer. This is the best song in the album. Full of energy. Sung with lot of spirituality and vibrant. Hats off to ARR.

Ghoomparani sung by Sapna, Satyanarayan. Genre: Lullaby

A soft melody sung well by the new singers. Has been composed for the situation and it will grow on you after the release of the film.

Then we have as much as 13 theme music. All have been scored to suit the screenplay.

· Durga Pooja (which is inevitable if the film as Bengal as back drop),

·Theme music on Netaji appears in two different versions,

·Afghanistan Theme music (Best in the theme music category),

·Theme music on Hitler appears twice (Netaji tried to get help from Hitler. But Hitler refuses to help him. Got this from a Shyam Benegal?s interview),

· Two different Emilie (his lady love) themes,

· 2nd song and 5th song appears as an instrumental,

· Two war theme music,

· Finally, the album ends with our national anthem as an instrumental. We can?t and should not review our national anthem.

A R Rahman has tried to bring the Hollywood culture of scoring lot of theme music for a movie and we have to wait whether that culture will work in Indian cinema. He has justified his selection for this prestigious project with some scintillating songs and innovative theme music. In my opinion it is one of the best album from ARR and people who can understand Hindi will enjoy it more. I am yet to see a negative review from renowned sites.

Time to listen: Not with your friends. Listen when you are alone in the house. Better to play in a good stereo system or listen through good headphones.

Final Say: A must buy for ARR fans and Hindi music lovers.

A rare gem from ARR
Apr 08, 2005 09:37 PM2236 Views

ARR is back and boy, isn't he with a bang. There are albums in which some songs rise above the conceived perception of good songs and makes you sit up and wonder ''where did that come from''. But there are other albums which makes you drop your jaw in awe and make you shout, ''That's what quality is''.

Bose is one such.

ARR has always been a MD who surprises everyone with the variety and conception of songs. Of late he has seen more performing currencies and has virtually neglected the Indian music scene. This led to some shoddy works. But all that is history with Bose. It is hard to think of anyone who has been successful in instilling a patriotic fervor more than what ARR has. He started with Roja, reached a crescendo with Vande Matharam then Legend of Bhagat singh, Lagaan and now Bose. Though I would still rate Bhagat singh as his best work in terms of musical value, Bose exceeds any contemporary work for its sheer class. KV Mahadevan made the whole Tamilnadu sing patriotism with his songs in ''Kapalotiya Thamizhan'' but ARR has made a whole nation do that.

Ekla Chalo: Sung by Nachiketa Chakraborty, Sonu Nigam, this song will disarm even the most dangerous criminal and make him think of the country. The Bengali portions, sung by Chakraborthy, start the song with one of the most peaceful tunes recently heard. Merely listening to the start gives you a vision of a lonely boat slowly paddling the waters of Howrah. What Ilayaraaja failed to utilize in his Mumbai Express, ARR has. Sonu Nigam gives a soulful rendering of the main portion of the song. With a nonchalant ease and fluidity that speaks volume of his ability as a singer, Sonu Nigam gives a beautiful touch to the song. The violin interludes that follow throughout the song lift the mood of the song to new heights.

Zikr: It started with Haaji Ali in Fiza, then Noor Ul in Meenaxi and now zikr. This powerful song in praise of Allah is to me the proving point of ARR's potential as a person who can make a powerful impact with music. Such is the intensity of this song that, I, despite being a non-Muslim, closed my eyes in prayer hearing this song. Such is the transcendental reach of his music that it literally crosses all boundaries. This song, given an absolutely soulful rendering by ARR, starts as a slow haunting tune and progresses into one of those songs, which sends you into trance. The percussion and strings added towards the end take you to a world of power emotions.

Desh Ki Mitti Sonu Nigam yet again proves his mettle as not just a singer but someone who can take a song beyond the conventional karaoke mood. With a whole bunch of choir in the orchestration, ARR lifts the song to be an absolute treat for melody lovers. It is such a master composer that can bring in such a rendering into a song

Aazadi ARR's voice today is what Sachin's batting was in 2000. Matured, confident, vastly improved, convinced of ability and sheer delight for fans. The first song where I really felt a remarkable improvement in his voice was the humming in ''Kabhi neem neem'' from Yuva. There was no screaming of high octaves. It was beautiful control, which highlighted every note of the tune. ''Aazadi'' justifies my admiration for ARR as a singer. Starting with a beautiful chorus, ARR lifts the song to new heights. Though an uncanny resemblance to ''Ma thujae salaam'' cannot be discounted, still a beautiful composition.

Kadam Kadam Vijay prakash, never heard of him? Well, you will in the future. But more than the singer, it is ARRs orchestration that comes to fore in this brisk patriotic song. The lead and bass trumpets, combined with some perfect sound mixing, gives this song a real Beethoven feel. Great background music and a perfect way to say, ''I love my country''

This album not only features songs, but a complete version of OSTs. People have prematurely called ARR the Mozart of south, but I guess we can do so now. Every sound track in this album is pure music lover's nectar and an arranger's dream.

Must have for all music lovers.

Rahman Rocks
Mar 31, 2005 12:22 AM2846 Views

In the world of music A R Rahman needs no introduction at all....his name is synonymous with 'great music'.His latest offering is the film Bose:The forgotten hero. The film has been directed by Shyam Benegal. Does the music of the film live up to the expectations?Let us see.

Azadi: This is the opening song in the CD.This song has been sung by Rahman himself.Recently he has opted to sing songs which are patriotic, be it 'Yeh jo Des hai Tera' from Swades or to an extent 'Vellai Pookkal' from Kannathil Muthamittal(Tamil). The song opens with a chorus singing 'Jai Hind' which is nice on the ears and then Rahman starts singing the song. His voice suits the song to the T and he has sung it really well....This should be right up there as one of the best songs which he has sung.

Kadam Kadam: This song is sung by Vijay Prakash and the Mumbai film choir. This is a fast paced song.It starts with a wonderful piece of Saxophone which is of international standards.....The song is really good to hear and really sets your adrenalin pumping....

Ekla Chalo: This song is sung by Sonu Nigam and the Bengali lyrics are sung by Nachiketa Chakraborty....It starts off with the Bengali part and then Sonu Nigam sings the song in a way which only he can.....A nice melodious offering from Rahman

Hum Dilli Dilli Jayenge: This song has been performed by the Mumbai film Choir again.....This song describes the movement of the INA to Delhi, I guess.....nice song on the lines of Kadam Kadam

Desh Ki Mitti: This is one of the best songs in the album, along with Azadi. This song has been sung by Sonu once again. He is the perfect voice for these types of songs....Rahman seems to get the best out of him....remember 'Kismat Se Tum' from Pukar or Satrangi from Dil Se.....A very melodious number describing our country...this number is a must hear....Anuradha Sriram gives good support to Sonu with her unusual but likeable voice.

Zikr: This song has been sung by Rahman again....it is similiar to Piya Haji Ali from Fiza in style....The song picks up momentum towards the end.Rahman has been ably supported by the chorus. The song which I liked the least in the album.Maybe it will be better when I hear it in the theatre

Ghoomparani: This is a very slow song which has been sung by Sapna Mukherjee.A nice melodious song,it has a nice tune and one feels very calm and nerves get soothed after listening to this song.

After all these songs comes a huge bonus in the form of Themes and instrumental tracks.....The themes are excellent and really deserve special mention especially the Durga Pooja track the Afghanistan Theme. And of course the full orchestral theme of the National anthem.....marvellous.

On the whole the album is a whole hearted effort from Rahman and is one of the best audio tracks to be released this year.....Now we know why Rahman is preferred for Period and/or Patriotic films....He has given his heart and soul to the film and it shows....Definitely a must buy for everyone and for Rahman fans.....need I say anything???Waiting with bated breath and impatience for The Rising

The only draw back I see is that I do not understand why this album was not marketed more when lesser audio tracks are given so much hype...not to say Rahman needs it.....Or is it that it was marketed but I did not know it as I am in Chennai and do not have any Hindi Channels to watch?? Thanks for reading the review....comments and brickbats welcome.....

RAHMAN...The Real Hero
Mar 25, 2005 10:07 PM2409 Views

BOSE-THE FORGOTTEN HERO-COMPSOSER:AR RAHMAN

HI...

This is my first musical review 4 mouth shut.....bose composed by rahman and lyrics by javed akthar,is a musical rich album..

Once again rahman has proved that he is the no 1 composer in india and one of the best composer in the world...

I don't want to review on all songs....but undoubtly ''Durga pooja, zikr, azzadi'' is the pick of the album....

There are nearly 3 orchestral versions....and 9 themes....there are 8 songs..the music is rich with flavored orchestrisation and singers...

Rahman is not only a great composer ,but also a good singer.....its just proved by zikr...

the only negative aspect about the music is that its been poorly marketed...there r no promos show on tv.... thus it may not be a commercial hit...

Every track and theme of the album is 100% original......only rahman can do this......

even some themes can be compared with greats such as YANNI....

Its high time other bollywood music directors improve their quality of music and be original like rahman

Another solid performance

Rahman comes back striking with yet another period film album ''Bose-The forgotten Hero''.Rahman's spirits go up when he performs on patriotic movies and didn't miss this opportunity even.He rocks again with a set of tracks that makes anyone feel their nerves pepping up with spirit.

Commencing with ''Aazadi'',naturally a song that one can expect to be the pick for a patriotic film, the album moves thru' a lot of variations in bengali mixed tracks and a long stretch of Orchestral BGM's.Awesome!!!

''Azaadi'' sung by rahman himself gives a hint of how the album is going to be and with rich orchestration and chorus, this song stands up leaving way to ''Ekla chalo''.The bengali lyrics are penned by rabindranath tagore and the song makes the listeners to float in melody and the same effect is produced in another track ''ghoomporani''.

''Hum Dilli Dilli'' and ''Kadam Kadam'' sounds like partiotic marches and keeps ringing in our hearts all time. ''Zikr'' sounds a bit like one of his previous compositions in ''Saathiya'',but no blame ...excellent refreshner.

''Desh Ki mitti''...astounding track, minted with a flavour of patriotism, the song is performed well by sonu nigam. The song's melody keeps the listeners often in a spirited ''desi'' mood and makes one addicted to the music after a couple of listens.

The Orchestral versions and themes show rahman's international experience.

Hats off to A R R and his patriotism implemented in a soulful musical album ''Bose''

Yet another ''Stunner'' from A.R.Rahman

Though A.R.Rahman has always delivered something fresh in each and every album, there are some special albums which can be called as “Real Stunners”. You get more than what you expected in these albums. The music would be overwhelming and you will not listen to any other album at least for 10 days after hearing this “Real Stunner” kind of album. The surprises are more and it would take time to get out of the syndrome of listening to the album again and again. In the recent past, if there is one album which can be named as a “Real Stunner”, it was “Meenaxi” and now “Bose” album can also be appended to that list. If the new sounds, fusion and complex instrument arrangements were the surprise elements in “Meenaxi”, we have got a long list of surprises in “Bose” album.

First of all, it is a complete OST album. There are totally 20 tracks in which 7 of them are songs and 13 are instrumentals background score pieces from the movie. Hardcore ARR fans have always waited for such an OST album from ARR. Though we had “Warriors of Heaven and Earth” before, it wasn’t for an Indian film.

Orchestral Score

A.R.Rahman is an expert in using synthesized rhythms, loops and sounds for his songs in synch with the mood of the song, whatever the situation of the song may be. But I always wanted to hear from him, songs backed with live orchestrations instead of computer generated sounds. The orchestral music always has a long lasting life and soul in it. A.R.Rahman has finally quenched my thirst of listening to such an orchestral score in songs with this album. None of the songs have electronic stuff. The songs are backed with both roaring and subtle orchestrations that goes well in synch with the mood of the songs.

Not a mere song maker

By this album, ARR yet again proves to be a film composer rather than a mere song maker. ARR has done just what is needed for the movie. With grand orchestrations, melodies, rhythms and symphonies, he has created a unique sound for the movie that resonates the period, place and overall mood of the movie perfectly.

Versatility

The album reassures the versatility of A.R.Rahman. The journey starts with patriotic “Azadi” and then shifts to heroic “Kadam”, then takes a turn to melodious “Ekla Chalo”, then to powerful, energetic marching song “Hum Dilli Dilli” and then to mellifluous and nostalgic “Desh Ki Mitti”, and then takes a sudden shift to Islamic prayer song “Zikr” and reaches the roots through a soft and sweet lullaby “Ghoomparani” in authentic Bengali notes and finally transcends to a festive mood through smashing percussions and Shehnai pieces in “Ayutha Pooja” and then follows stream of background pieces among which a track called “Afghanistan theme” with authentic Arabic chants and notes widens the range and variety of music in the album further.

Now Coming to the songs..

Azadi

The song though sounds good; somewhere reminds us “Vande Mataram” song. The background rhythms are subtle version of that of “Vande Mataram” and even ARR singing and stretching “Azadi” in high pitch is similar to that of Vande Mataram. Inspite of all these similarities, the song has fresh tune and above all the “Jai Hind” Choir part is extraordinarily composed and performed. It truly elevates the song to higher planes but ARR could have made the lyrics understandable but this always happens when we try to use choirs singing in some language with notes in western classical. And I was bowled over by the way ARR merges the strings playing the same notes along with the choir when it repeats for the second time in the song. A true master he is there. As a singer, ARR does a fine job again in a patriotic number.

Kadam

One thing that immediately registered in my mind was the heroic solo trumpet theme in this song. It sounds as grand as any heroic theme of John Williams. The song goes energetic with powerful lyrics and usual military band sound in the background with Rahman touches here and there.

Ekla Chalo

ARR takes us to a completely different plane when the song starts with an unusual rhythm in the background. Fusion of strings with mild military band beats something we have never heard before. The main line in Bengali sung by Nachiketa Chakraborthy is unusually composed and it takes times to catch this catchy tune. Sonu Nigam does it again with his expressive singing. The orchestration that goes high along when Sonu starts high in some of the lines between proves how far ARR has matured in writing orchestral music and also you would hear a mild orchestration flowing in the BG from the start till the end which holds the mood of the song.

Hum Dilli Dilli

This song sounds very similar to ''Kadam'' song one but the orchestrations are grander and the tempo is higher suiting the rhythmic foot steps of soldiers marching ahead.

Desh Ki Mitti

It is the best song of the album and also going to be one of the best songs of the year. Sonu Nigam mesmerizes you again with his heart felt singing with a subtle sober in his voice. ARR uses lot of choirs along with orchestra to bring the nostalgic effect and yes it does it brings that to a great extent. The piano pieces scattered all through the track nicely blends with the orchestration and adds beauty to the song.

Zikr

It is an Islamic prayer song sung by a group of singers with A.R.Rahman taking the lead. His voice fits the mood of the song to T. The tempo gradually increases as it proceeds and the reaches the extreme at the end. The percussions along with the strings struck rhythmically in the BG are the elements that stop you from skipping this highly situational number.

Ghoomparani

It is soft sweet lullaby kind of song composed in Bengali style. Sapna Mukherjee’s voice is very sweet and especially sounds awesome when she sings “Nindhiya Rani sapnae de dho”. The flute pieces add the authenticity to the track. As always ARR nicely blends strings with the folk rhythms in this song too.

From now on follows a stream of background pieces which can be enjoyed well even before watching the movie. Among them the most I like is “Ayutha Pooja” and “Afghanistan theme”. “Netaji theme” is the orchestral version of notes from “Ekla Chalo” song. The themes of action sequences like “Hitler theme”, “War theme”, “U Boat theme” are of international standards. “Netaji Theme 2” with a solo cello playing a soulful tune sounds like a hymn to the fallen hero. And the full orchestral version of “Jana Gana Mana” is a fitting finale to a patriotic album. The national anthem has been orchestrated quite differently with lot of additional stream of strings in the background along with the main tune.

Definitely the album is not for everyone, but it is a treat to listen to who is open to any kind of quality music. Hope this album will be noticed and not forgotten unlike “Bose”.
