If Your Lips Aren't Kissable You Need This!
May 12, 2003 09:06 AM 4208 Views

I have a problem with dry lips so often use Blistex to help moisturize them. When my lips get too dry I get cold sores. Blistex is a great help then as well.

Blistex Lip Ointment is a sun screen protection 15+ SPF lip balm and coldsore treatment ointment, which reduces the symptoms of cold sores.

WHY I NEED TO USE BLISTEX:

When I lived in Alberta the winters were long and cold and I often had chapped lips. In British Columbia the wind makes my lips dry.

The glare of the Sun off the snow in the winter and the long summer days make my lips sore and dry.

When I am upset I get a coldsore on my lips and a few times on my eye lids, (Bilistex won't help the eyes).

THE PACKAGING:

Blistex's container looks like a lipstick. There are .15 oz of a vaseline looking cream inside. The tube is blue with Blistex written in white.

THE FORMULA:

The active Ingredients are: 7.5% Padimate O, 2% Oxybenzone, 1% Camphor and 1% Allantoin. There are no scents added to it.

WHY IT WORKS:

Padimate O and Oxybenzone are chemical sun screens that form a barrier to absorb damaging ultraviolet (UV) light before it reaches the lips and skin. Sun screen protection will help avoid cold sores that are often stimulated by UV light. Allantoin is an emollient that softens and soothes dry and damaged lips.

THE COMPANY:

Blistex Inc. began, (in 1947), as a small Family Company. In 2002, Blistex Inc. received an ISO 9001: 2000 registration. This prestigious designation is only awarded to Companies that have a high quality Management System who focuses on the quality of their products, Customer satisfaction and product improvement. Today their products have helped millions of people around the World.

MY CONCLUSION:

Blistex helps me and if you haven't tried it I hope you will.

Blistex makes a lot of products that you can find on their website:

I pay $1.00 CAD for the tube. It's a bargain because it lasts for a long time, (I still have a half a tube left from last year).

Comments are always welcome.

Chapped Lips? Use Blistex!
Jan 17, 2003 09:39 AM 8229 Views

When I went into labor with my oldest child over 21 years ago, my lips got so dried out. My husband kept telling the nurses to get something on them so that there would not be any permanent damage to them. The doctor even told them too. No one had any lip balm of any kind or Vaseline. Nothing! I kept wetting my lips to get some kind of relief from the dryness, which really helped very little.

Now, the nurses were suppose to be getting some lemon glycerin to put on my lips but couldn’t find any. When they finally did, the stuff only made my lips worse. Well the nurses couldn’t believe that because the glycerin was the best there was and I was just in pain and didn’t realize that the stuff was working. Trust me I knew the lemon glycerin was not working, I may have been in pain, but at that time the pain was bearable. Needless to say my lips got worse.

My husband then started asking for some Vaseline telling the nurses that I should know whether something was working or not, and once again they couldn’t find any. Finally my husband threatened the lives of the nurses (just kidding) but he did get a little irate, and walked next store the 7-11 to get me some Vaseline, because the nurses would not even bring that to me. While he was gone my mother kept ice chips on my lips to keep them cool and moist but the nurses got on to her about that! At that my husband came back in the room and told the nurses to get out! They told him that he could not use the Vaseline that he had went and bought on my lips because it wasn’t hospital material. My husband told them where they could go! The Vaseline he bought was put on my lips.

After the birth of my daughter, which mind you she was very beautiful, baldhead and all, my lips were so parched and hurt so bad, the Vaseline wasn’t working much anymore. My father brought me in some Blistex® to try. And Blistex® it has been ever since.

The Product

Blistex® Regular Medicated Lip Protectant with Sunscreen. (SPF 15) Seals in moisture, which soothes and prevents dry lips. Even dry lips caused by wind! The formula is soft and easy to glide over my lips with no problems.

Blistex® Lip Balm has 3 long lasting Protectant's that seals in moisture to prevent drying of the lip tissue. The SPF protection is great! People who burn easily should certainly consider using a lip balm with SPF in it.

The container is greenish blue. At my local Wal Mart I can get it for .97 cents, but at my local grocery store I pay 1.29 for it. Net Wt. .15oz

Uses and Directions

Helps to prevent and temporarily protects chapped, cracked or wind burned lips.

Helps prevent sunburn. The higher a product's SPF, the greater its sunburn protection.

Apply liberally and evenly before sun exposure and as needed. I will also apply under and over lipsticks, which will help that to stay on longer and shine better.

Certainly when out fishing I use it or when boat riding. I really use it a lot when boat riding because of the wind. I do not like windy days because of the wind drying my lips out more, but Blistex® fixes me right up.

Children Under 6 month, you should ask their doctor before use.

How I Feel

Blistex® is the best on the market for me. I have tried other brands, and mind you when I can’t get my hands on Blistex® they are better than nothing. But Blistex® is certainly the referred brand. I have bought so many of these things over the years I can’t count that high! Should have bought stock! Lol!

I certainly do not recommend lemon glycerin though for anyone, it’s bad stuff in my book. And because of the negligence of the nurses and then putting something on my lips that made them worse, my lips have been chapped for over 21 years. Wind, food, lipsticks, drinks, anything makes them worse! But at least I have found something that works for me!

Also, if I leave my Blistex® in the car it will melt, but, it will firm back up very shortly. I try not to do this to often, but on occasion I have. It is a good thing that it will go back to the way it was before the heat got to it!

I hope that this has helped in some kind of way.

God Bless!

Blistex has a wide selection of lip care products. Anything from normal, clear, unscented stuff, to medical, healing stuff and even one that gets the wrinkles out of you lips and makes them look younger!

Lips are very important to the rest of the face. Your lip ''skin'' is not the same as your other skin. Lips get chapped because they don't have their own source of moisture. Sweat Glands add moisture to normal skin, but your lips don't sweat, their only source of moisture is saliva. Thus, harsh winter wind, cold, sun, and dryness--indoors and outdoors--make lips a vulnerable target for chapping.

DRY CHAPPED LIPS -

The most common lip problem is dry, crusty lips. As a result of the properties of lip skin, moisture rapidly evaporates from the lips, causing them to dry out very easily. This dryness frequently results in chapping and cracking, and increases the risk of inflammation, infection and burning. Exposure to sun, wind and cold can obviously speed the rate of moisture loss, your lips aren't even safe indoors. They can suffer from lack of moisture in centrally heated or air-conditioned rooms in which the relative humidity is low.

COLD SORES AND FEVER BLISTERS

Both names, cold sore and fever blister, refer to the lip blisters caused by infections of the herpes simplex virus. These infections are associated with Herpes Simplex I (not to be confused with Herpes Simplex II, which is generally associated with genital herpes). Cold Sores are viral infections which cause recurrent groups of irritating, even painful blisters on the lips. A cold sore sufferer usually feels a sensation of heat, tingling, irritation or itching about 24 hours before a blister appears. The fluid filled blister frequently breaks in the first few days, while total healing usually takes 4-10 days.

Cold sores are contagious, so care should be taken to avoid contact with this area. Touching the infected area may result in infection elsewhere, and the virus can be passed to others.

These blisters have become known as cold sores or fever blisters since they can develop when a person has a cold or fever. But outbreaks frequently follow sun exposure, trauma, examination stress, emotional discomfort, the start of menstruation or intestinal upset--occasionally, they have no obvious cause at all.

SUN DAMAGE

Because the outer layer of the lip is so thin, the lips in their natural state are not adequately shielded from the sun. In fact, lips have almost no melanin, the natural pigment in skin that helps screen out the sun's harmful rays. As a result, lips rarely tan, but they can easily burn.

Even licking lips can be more detrimental than helpful, since saliva acts like a lens to intensify sun exposure. And because lips are located on the face, they are rarely covered, and thus constantly exposed to sun damage.

When unprotected lips are exposed to too much sun, the collagen changes, causing lips to wrinkle and fine lines to form around the mouth. Even when lips show no physical signs of the sun's effect, damage can occur. Just because you don't see a surface burn doesn't mean that the underlying layers haven't been harmed.

Young lips (children's and teens') are especially vulnerable. Studies have shown that UV over-exposure during the first 18 years of life can cause the damage that later results in adult skin cancer.

To prevent sun damage to lips, look for lip products with sunscreen. Many Blistex lip product contain sunscreen, just look at the label!

I just have to say that I love all blistex products. But my favorite is the orignal Blistex complete moisture. When you put it on, its just such a beautiful feeling of moisture and it has a light smell and taste of something lemony. ITS GREAT!
