Sanjay Subramaniam - Margazhi Maha Utsavam concert
Dec 10, 2007 09:37 PM 7216 Views

"Janaranjagam" - How do you define this? Simple ..Hear a Sanjay Subramainam concert..a word that should rather be felt than defining ...

Well the Margazhi maasam is round the corner..and had a starter last friday beginning with the Jaya tv margazhi maha utsavam concert of Sanjay Subramaniam in the Chettinad Vidyashram School auditorium.

We were in for the master Balamuralikrishna concert itself. But he was delivering his last piece  for the day and all I could make out was it was some Viruttam in Behag.

Sanjay's concert started still after ten minutes. He was clad in his typical half sleeved white shirt and pattu veshti. The accompaniments were Sri.Varadarajan on violin and Sri.Arunprakash on Mridangam.

His theme for the day was Tamil Moovar - Mutthu Thandavar, Maarimuttha Pillai and Arunachala Kavirayar. He started with "Sivachidamabarame Darisikka maname" in Nagaswarali setting the pace for the concert. Crisp delivery of Kalpana swaras followed gracefully by the violinist.

Next was a Arunacahal Kavirayar keerthanai in Malayamaarudam - "Anumaane saamikinda adayaalam sollayya ". This was also brief with him  playing with swaras for sometime in a "Thaatu Varisai" fashion...thoroughly enjoyed it.

The raaga that followed was a slightly elaborate Lathangi. A complete aalapanai with exploring all the margins of the Raaga. An equally fine performance on violin followed. The keerthanai then was "tarisitalamai Mukthi peralam" . An elegant end only to be disappointed to find there we no Swara deliveries...that too in lathangi...very bad.

One more "slightly elaborate" presentation this time in Kaapi Narayani. This is the first time I am hearing this Raaga from him.Kaapi narayani reminds you of the "Sarasa saamadana" keerthanai form Madurai Mani iyer.  It  reminds you of the way the  veteran keeps on capturing the beautiful combination of  swaras.

If there is one artist who can present raagas crisp and deft without any complications , it is  sanjay subramaniam. Well expressed, touching all the boundaries while equally maintaining order, depth and interspersion. 7minutes just went away a whiff. Then rendered the "thillai chidambarame allaamale illai sudandirame" keerthanai. Then came Kaapinarayani speciality Swara delivery..fast and adequately spaced wasting or expanding none  of  the links for an extra thirutam / avartanam. But he couldnt work much on swaras for he still had the elaborate piece of the day...

.....Bhairavi.The maestro set to work once again.  I didnt keep time of how long the rendition took. The first very few minutes he gave few runs of the raagam with enchanting combinations. The depth increased as he advanced, eyes closed gently, heads moved around in rhythm softly and the flavour of bhairavi filled up the ether of the hall. A captivating expression on violin ensued with the violinist supporting the raagam with his own slices of manodharma for sometime.

We had all guessed by now...as he started with the typical low " Yaaaaaaro ivar yaaaaro.." the seniors  all  in  unison  in the hall swung their heads with a "ch" delighted that it had indeed been what they we expecting. The paced keerthanai went on to leave way and allowing for the Bhairavi - Kaviraayar blend of professive Neravals and the first and second kaalam swaras. A special mention of mridangam here..the performance not only matched the pace and as the speciality itself here is the pace the whole combination fromthe vocalist and violinist was just supported wonderfully that it seemed the music seemed to be structured on the rhytmic taps.

AS usual there were Thani avartanam walkouts..eventually the mridangam artist too had his share of exceptional   nibbles  and applause..

The Q and A session then followed...i couldnt remember what were being asked for most of theme were very ordinary and stereotyped and Sanjay himself shot back answers with haste and insignificance.. but equally to be mentioned that he just gets to the point straight and hits a snapshot while talking....

He concluded with a viruttham and "Kaana vendum Latcham kangal" in surutti.

I could identify only a couple of Arunachala Kavi's songs (including yaaro ivar yaaro) for the other two , just as sanjay explained , had not been in the limelight much.

But it was a nice good satiation to to the ears that evening. Catch this on Jaya tv this december. Immerse yourself in the "Sundara Tamizh" compositions of Thamizh moovar laid upon the Nagaswarali, Lathangi, Kapi narayani , Bhairavi raagams by the exponent Sanjay Subramaniam.
