Bhumika - FilmFare Awards 1977 Reviews

Bombay - Mumbai India
The Role

Women emancipation is a buzzword with many so called proponents of gender equality in Indian Cinema. However, on the whole, very few people have actually done more than lip service to these lofty aims in their films. Even well-established film-makers have normally shied away from making movies which actually can be considered as real milestones in this regard.

One of the few which did away with hackneyed clichés and formula role-building in a successful manner has been instrumental in creating one of the landmarks in real cinema ? here I refer to one of Shyam Benegal?s most popular movies ? Bhumika.

Bhumika (1977) is based on the auto-biography of one of the most sought actresses of the Marathi film industry of the 1940?s and 50?s ?Hansa Wadekar and does a world of justice to her autobiography. Bhumika is the story of a woman and her spirited struggle to lead life on her own terms and her struggle to emerge tall in a world of dwarfs.

Smita Patil in the title role essays one of the best roles of her career. Here is a role which presents an actress with all complexities of anger, frustration, emotional upheavals and physical stress but at no point is the actress in Smita found to be wanting. At every step in the movie, she is at her emotional best. Little wonder, this role is considered one of the best roles ever enacted by an actress in Indian Cinema. As a person committed to leaving life on her own terms, she dominates every frame without appearing to do so and all you carry after the movie is her simmering frustration and admiration of emotional will power.

Amol Palekar as the good-for-nothing husband living on his wife?s hard-earned money is excellent. Although you hate him for his spineless character, you cannot but feel pity for him and that is definitely a plus point about his portrayal of the character. The possessive shade which he imparts to the character is excellent.

Naseeruddin Shah as the womanizing director, Amrish Puri as the authoritarian narrow-minded patriarch and Anant Nag as the slightly cowardly actor who loves Smita are also brilliant in their performance although one would expect a little more intense performance from Naseer. One of the best performances in the movie however comes from Satyadev Dubey and Sulbha Deshpande who impart a multi-dimensional complexity to a simple role.

Shyam Benegal once again proves his expertise in creating a movie which is more than a notch above the average fare dished out by Hindi Film Industry. The greatest proof of his excellence lies in the fact that although the movie leans heavily on Smita Patil, he still insures that all the other actors do not look and appear as if straight out of the woodwork. All the confrontations in the movie are brilliant and the director has literally taken pains to ensure perfect continuity in the story and the graph of the movie.

The only part, slightly negative about the movie is the soundtrack which is only passable to say the least, however to the credit of the movie they gel well with the flow.

All in all, a good movie for one who appreciates good cinema
