Bewafaa is a Boney Kapoor production, directed by Dharmesh Darshan, who earlier tackled love triangles in Dhadkan, and one night stands in Haan Maine Bhi Pyar Kiya. Unfaithfulness seems to be in the air this year, with films like Murder (totally unfaithful), Masti (playfully unfaithful), and Aitraaz (faithfully unfaithful). Surprising, the audiences have been faithful to all these films.
The lead pair of Bewafaa, Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor, come together yet again, after Aitraaz, though they did share the screen earlier in Ajnabee. Bewafaa also stars Anil Kapoor, Sushmitha Sen and Manoj Bajpai. Sameer has written the lyrics of this film, and Nadeem Shravan has composed the musical score. The album has 10 numbers, of which two are instrumental.
The album opens with ?Ek Dilruba Hai? by Udit Narayan. This is a breezy number, picturised on the lead pair. Udit displays good vocals, while expressing his love and commitment to his beloved, in the song. This is a song that grows on you, as you keep listening. This song?s tune is used two more times in the album, with a change in lyrics, once by Shaan, and once by Sonu Nigam.
?Pyar Ka Anjaam? by Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Sapna Mukherjee follows this song. This is a love song, with simple music arrangements on the keyboard and on the violin. Both the ladies perform well, though Alka?s voice is richer and fuller. Kumar Sanu is wonderful, and the song has some lovely lyrics like ? Hum hai who aashiq jo chahat ke shabnam piye ja rahe hain?.
Lata Mangeshkar, after some good songs in Veer Zaara, lends her voice to the next song, which is titled ?Kaise Piya Se?. It?s a simple song, with good use of violins and guitar. Lata is good, but nowhere as brilliant as she was 10 or 20 years ago. This is a song of hope and expectation, as the wife fantasizes about the return of her husband.
Ishq Chupta Nahin? by Abhijeet, is sung in the style of a ghazal, and one can almost imagine Pankaj Udhas doing this song. This song will appeal to lovers of ghazals, and Abhijeet?s voice and range of singing are well suited to this form of music. This song also has some good lyrics like ?Ishq Chupta Nahin Chupane Se, Tera Aashiq Hun Main Zamane Se?. ?Kehta hai Kabutar? is a fast, breezy, number, full of mischief and masti.
There are traces of ?Dum Dum Diga Diga? in the background score, and the song is sung well by Shaan and Asha Bhosale. This song will remind listeners of ?Kahan Teri Yeh nazar Hai? from the film Kaalia, and is a fun song, and has a fair sprinkling of English words. It?s a song, which pokes fun at high society living, and is a song of one-upmanship. Occasionally, Shaan succeeds in sounding like Kishore Kumar.
Shaan sing ?Pyar Ki Raahein? which is a very short, sad, introspective song, and quickly the song takes on the tune of the first song ?Ek Dilruba hai?, with a change of words. Sonu Nigam and Chorus employs the same tune in the next song ?Ek Bewafaa Hai?.
Sonu is brilliant, and the song stars with a few English lines, by the chorus. This is a song of a jilted lover, a song of dejection, a song of accusation, and a song in which the singer ultimately promises revenge. The background music of this song at times veers towards that of the sixties, often heard in films like Teesri Manzil. This song has beautiful lyrics, with sentences like ?Mera Dil jis dil pe fida hai, ek bewafaa hai, Haan, mohabbat ki yehi sazaa hai, ek bewafaa hai?. Probably, this is one of the best songs in the album.
The eighth song in this album is a ghazal ?Teri yaad, yaad, yaad?, sung by the Pakistani maestro, Ghulam Ali. This is the longest song in the entire album, and one can only stare and listen in awe and amazement as Ghulam Ali uses his vocal cords with tremendous dexterity and flexibility, moving up and down the scales with consummate ease. This is a sad song, and some of the lyrics like ?Ishq mein to har cheez mit jaathi hai, bekarari ban ke hame tadpathi hai, bas yad reh jati hai? touch your heart.
The last two numbers are instrumentals. One is an instrumental version of the Lata Mangeshkar song ?Kaise Piya Se? on the keyboard and the other is a short piece of Drum Beats, accompanied by guitars, violins and background voices.Nadeem Shravan have always been know to produce good melodious music and this one too is an above average album. With a heavy star cast to boot, the film should do well at the box office. And for ghazal lovers, there are two in the album. Go for it.
