Fish, Crab, Mutton and "Mochar Ghonto"

Yesterday one of my friends called up in late afternoon and said "lets go somewhere and have some Bengali food". We, Bengalis, are famous for our love for food and travel. Hence, needless to say, in all the metro cities there are restaurants that serves delicacies from Bengal and Bangalore is not an exception. We chose to explore the food hub - Koramangala.

" BANGALIANA" - the name sounds lovely to the ear and location is also convenient - not far from Koramangala forum - a popular landmark as a meeting place. We decided to explore it.

The restaurant is in the 1st cross road - the lane between A2B and Udupi. So, we warmed up with a cup of filter coffee and then proceeded. The outlet is, however, in the 3rd floor and quite taxing to climb up. Nonetheless, we took it positively as it would make us more wanting! the walls of the staircase are nicely painted, paintings representing Bengal. The decor and arrangements are nice and modest. There is one terracotta art of Goddess durga and lantern shaped lights. Don't expect the luxury of a five star. The staffs are courteous and serving time is less. My friend had crab while I ordered "Pabda" fish. Food is tasty and at reasonable price. I remember my Pabda jhal was rs. 300. Prawns, Hilsa and Pomfret were also in similar range. So was mutton. Veg delicacies like posto, mocha and dhoka are also tasty.

Pros: Tasty food at reasonable price

Cons: Outlet is not specious; One needs to climb narrow staircase - not recommended if you have elderly

Bangaliana as the name suggest is a chain of bengali restaurant spanning over the city ( bangalore) . You get authentic bengali cuisine. A la carte restaurant where you can find plenty of options to choose from or you may even have the meals . They have now expanded there restaurants to electronic city also apart from koramangala and HSR layout. If you are a regular customer, you can even opt for their discount option that theu have newly introduced. Helpful staff and prompt service. Moroever the price is way less than other bengali food outlets like bhojohori manna, esplaned, oh Calcutta. They only thing that I didnt like is the sitting arrangement. Sometime you may need to wait in queue if you visit their koramanagala branch. They even give good discount if you do bulk order for house party and the food will not disappoint you.Overall must visit if you want to try bengali cuisine.

Bangaliyanais a Bengali restaurant situated in Kormangala near Forum. This is one of the oldest Bengali restaurants of Bangalore but trust me if you ever visit this place you will not certainly like to visit it once again.

The interior is dimly lit with food being served on dirty plates and people sitting on top of one another. The only thing that this restaurant reminds me is of a tea stall at a village.... The food quality is very bad. There is no standard rates for the item...

The menu is hand written on a white board and is entirely depends on the owner's wish. The worst of all is the fact that people do not mind sharing their tables with other strangers. The food that is severed is overly priced and not cooked hygienically. If you are being charged so highly then you certainly expect the food quality and the ambiance to be good but that is not the case with this restaurant or rather 'TEA STALL'.

You will be made to sit on chairs with door mats placed on them. Water will be served out of dirty old mineral water bottles. You will have to wait for hours before you are shown a table on with already other people are sitting. When you ask for the menu card the waiter starts reciting the menu card out to you and if you are not brilliant enough to catch up with him , he will point you a board on which the day's menu is written.

After a few minutes(thankfully you dont have to wait long) you are served with only rice , daal and a morsel of what they claim to be a fry. When you ask where the rest of the dishes that you had ordered are, you will be rudely told that they will be there at their due time.Next comes you fish or meat or what ever you have asked for. You will have to scan an entire bowl full of watery jhol to find your piece.

I have nothing to say for the taste. It is really inedible. I am sure that is anyone of us tried our hands on trying to cook that dish we would have come up with better outcome. I have never in my life tasted any Bengali food being so badly prepared.

After a long torture of trying to finish your food you ultimately think of giving up and paying your bill. You will have to get used to the fact that you will not be given the bill at your table but you will have to actually go and pay it at the front desk. The moment you tell them that you will be paying by Card, a disgusted expression crosses the person's face sitting on the desk. With much irritation he would make himself switch on the card swiping machine and accept your payment.

I feel ashamed of the fact that Bengalis are cheating Bengalis this way. The food is overly priced then I think the owner can think a bit about the ambiance and dishes and certainly the food taht is being served. It is a shame that people put up such a sorry picture of Bengali culture to others. I would strictly advise people to avoid taking their friends to this restaurant if they want to show them a flavor of the Bengali culture and food.

Beaware of Bengaliana
Jul 08, 2009 06:19 PM 3038 Views

I have a horrible experience to share. I had a lunch at bengaliana kormanagala, Bangalore, and I left my mobile and went off. Then after 10 mins I remembered that I left it on the lunch table and I tried to call it through my other mobile. It was switched off.

Then I rushed to that place and asked the waiter and the owner for my cell phone. They said that they are unaware of any mobile phone. They started shouting and abusing me like anything. I told them that by mistake if you get my mobile then do give me a call on a different number , but they refused to note it. Finally I was abused and I went to a PS and registered a loss of mobile complain.

Beaware of those thiefs and please take care of your belongings if you enter their premises. If anyone can help me get back my mobile (nokia 3500c) I shall be thankfull to you. You can give me a call at my below mentioned number.

ThanksAbhishake

Most people imagine Bengalis as ardent lovers of fish and sweets. But unlike a typical Bengali, when at home, I didn’t salivate at the prospect of maacher-jholand alu-postor torkari. Moving to Bangalore, I though I had escaped the usual home made food and could experiment my taste buds with unusual dishes of my choice. Chinese, Continental, Mexican, South Indian….the choices were plenty and I had a blast trying out new restaurants and cuisines.

But few months down the line and I found myself in Ejipura market staring nostalgically at silvery fish. But typical Bengali favourite fish like Pabda, Hilsa, Bhetki, Puthi, Tangra are hard to find in Bangalore and I wistfully began to think of the food my mother must be making at home.

Finally, in desperation, I started asking around for a place which serves Bengali cuisine. My prayers were answered when a friend told us that he had seen a Bengali restaurant in 7th Block Koramangala. So one Sunday evening, we left home with the aim of having dinner at this place.

We walked the lanes of 7th Block looking left and right tying to locate the place but two rounds of the area and we still couldn’t trace it. In anxiety, I looked skyward with a silent prayer on my lips and suddenly my eyes caught sight of a board “Bangaliana”on the second floor of a building. My spirits soared at the sight and my feet seemed to have caught wings as I climbed to the second floor.

The place was not as I had expected – It was a mid-sized room very plainly furnished with just enough seating place for 20-25 people at a time. It looked more like a mess than a swanky restaurant. But the place was full of people and I could see that they were enjoying their meal.

As we entered we were welcomed by a man who looked like the owner. The day’s specials were written on a white board and we had the choice of Illish meal(Hilsa / Illish is a native of the Hoogly and is a terribly bony fish but its distinctive flavor makes is a favorite with fish connoisseurs), Kalia meal(Pieces of Rohu or Koi in rich spicy sauce made with yogurt) and Luchi Mangsho (Bengal’s signature fried bread — puffy, light - similar to puri, with a rich mutton gravy).

We decided to try the Illish Mealand Luchi Mangsho. The meal consisted of unlimited white rice with Daal (lentils with Bengali seasoning) and Alu posto (Diced potatoes in grinded poppy seeds and green chilies cooked in mustard oil). The fish was cooked to perfection in a zesty ground mustard sauce. I must say that I greatly enjoyed the meal and it reminded me of food cooked at home with love and care.

The Luchi Mangshowas equally satisfying – five large hot luchis served with a steaming hot bowl of mouth-watering mutton gravy. You can ask for additional luchis without paying extra. The luchis were a little oily but we didn’t really care for the taste made up for the calories.

For dessert there was the option of soft fluffy Rasgullas and Langchas (a longish looking deep fried sweet in syrup) priced at Rs. 6 a piece. But we decide to skip dessert as we were already full and couldn’t eat another morsel.

Although they have a menu card, most of the items are not available on a daily basis and most customers prefer to eat the day’s specials. Some Bengali delicacies that can be found on the specials list are Tangrar Jhal (Tangra fish in fragrant gravy of onion, hot pepper and ginger), Chingri Macher Malai Curry (prawns slowly cooked in creamy gravy made of coconut milk) and Kasha Mangsho(Spicy sautéed mutton chunks).

The service is not as professional as in up market eateries but the staff is helpful and cheery. You might have to give a few loud calls before the waiter can hear you over the din. The interior is minimalist with no fancy items on display but I think it really doesn’t matter to the regulars who come here for a meal which is both scrumptious and home-like.

Don’t go there expecting well-dressed attendants and leather sofas and you won’t be disappointed. It is not a place you could go to for a date or an official lunch but if you have simple Bengali cuisine on your mind then it is definitely worth a visit.

Bon Appetit!!
