Cainta Philippines
Cool Baguio City
Sep 09, 2002 07:22 AM 4597 Views

A city atop a mountain range, Baguio was established by the Americans in the early 1900s intended for a military Rest and Recreation area. Charting the mountainous range with a snaking 25-kilometer road from the plains to the highlands, (Kennon Road has the reputation of having the most number of rock and landslides every year) Baguio City’s accessibility earned it the title “summer capital of the Philippines.” Daniel Burnham, an American architect, was commissioned to design a park which now became famous as Burnham Park

With contrast to the hot and humid Philippine climate, Baguio boasts of a cool 20-degree C, sometimes dipping to near zero in winter time and a high of 30 during summer. And if the verdant mountain views with trees and flowers by the roadside (and almost everywhere) and scattered vegetable gardens are not enough, one can go for the most popular sites.

  1. Mines View Park – an old mining site which happens to be just an ordinary ravine

except for one thing - there are kids in the almost 45-degree slope waiting for coins to be thrown by tourists.

  1. Mines View Market – just beside Mines View Park, where all native products of Baguio are sold. Metal crafts like silver necklace, golden bracelet and brass decors can be had for a cheap price. You will marvel at the novelty of the wood crafts like ashtrays, pencils, etc. Food products would certainly satiate your taste buds with the exotic strawberry jam and other sweets. How about hand-woven clothing materials?

  2. Wright Park – offering cheap horseback riding with countless of horses and ponies to choose from.

  3. Sagada Caves - housing local mummies. A trip would certainly be enchanting especially with stories from the hired guide. There are many legends about the cave which could fill a book.

  4. Asin Hot Springs. Amidst the nippy atmosphere, one can indulge in a natural spa with the hot water coming “up” from a mountain spring. This is the favorite haunt of Baguio residents, just a 45-minute drive from the city.

  5. Trinidad Valley Vegetable Garden – rows upon rows of vegetables for sale, retail or wholesale. Picking strawberries would be quite an experience.

  6. Botanical Gardens – with ancient tress decorated by rows of flowers and native idols. Picture-taking with the Igorots in authentic aborigine attire of colorful g-strings is a must for tourists.

  7. Burnham Park – located near the center of the city, beside the market and the university. It has a man-made lake where one can rent a small rowboat, there’s a skating rink, also a bicycle area with novelty bike designs, and cozy seats and benches to rest one’s body and mind.

The number can go on and on until I run out of space so I’d better stop now. By the way, Baguio residents mostly speak the Ilocano dialect but English is generally understood. Hospitality is a general trait and vending is inherent as evidenced by the sidewalk vendors everywhere. There’s nightlife but no red district and decency is being maintained by the local government.

So remember, your trip to the Philippines won’t be complete without a visit to Baguio City.
