Introduction
I have been a big fan of the original Star Trek series. Three characters specially with whom I have fallen in love is Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Spock and Dr. McCoy. Somehow when then the new series led by Captain Pickard came on, I felt my passion for Star Trek drift away. So after a long time when I saw at a friend's place this novel, which harped Captain Kirk returns, old memories got stirred and I picked up the book ''Avenger''.
Plot
The plot begins with a standoff between Pickard's Enterprise and a renegade spaceship. Suddenly the spaceship seems to commit suicide rather than surrender. So what the hell? The only thing that seems wrong with this is the spaceship was handled by a Vulcan. Vulcan committing suicide!! How illogical? Precisely what eats into Pickard's mind.
Elsewhere Ambassador Spock (no longer Lieutenant-- Time Flies) is investigating a message which seems to indicate that his father Sarek did not die a natural death, some mischief is involved there...
Further, elsewhere a planet is dying. A virogen (read virus) is eating into the crops of the planet and the population is going through an epidemic caused by it. There seems to be no cure for the virogen. A mysterious character appears from nowhere (a la Harry Potter ishtyle) and starts curing people. The mysterious character is soon identified as some James Tiberius Kirk who captained Enterprise and has long since died twice.
Are these three incidents related in some manner? Will Spock, Kirk and Picaard meet again? If so, will they unite one more time to save the Federation against this virogen and its perpetuators? Moreover what is the vulcan angle in this? Is it an insider revolt or is there something which evades the eyes?

The Issue
One thing that usually separates Star Trek from Star Wars is Star Trek usually tackles an issue core to an economy, whereas Star Wars is all about glorifying the victory of good over evil and of freedom over captivity.
The issue tackled in this novel is a real unique one and might be pertinent in today's economy. Today when we say the world is shrinking and all economies are aligning towards each other, we are missing a small fact. By employing similar agricultural and other economic practices worldwide we are exposing the world to one small problem. What if a single virus attacks all the similar agricultural crops? Where would the world find food from under such a situation? Isn't this the precise reason why the world has such diversity across its length and breadth? Are we humans committing suicide by trying to make things consistent and similar?
The Writing
The book makes a dramatic start with the standoff situation, then stutters and slows down as Kirk is played into the novel. Ambassador Spock's tale also drags on for some time. Then suddenly there is a spurt in action as the chase for the intruder begins, then comes an abrupt ending where all pieces are tried to knit together.
The plot had a lot of potential, but I must say only about 50% of its potential has been utilized. As above, the story does not seem to have a consistent pace and stutters and starts at a lot of places. The flashback of Kirk, Spock and Sarek is also overplayed too much as the novel progresses.
Of course, there are couple of good passages as well. Specially the ones which show Spock more human than ever before and his candid statements about Kirk's intuitiveness.
Bigger Picture
This book happens to be the third novel in the series which comprises of The Ashes of Eden, The Return and Avenger. I have not read the first two novels and don't intend to make hectic efforts to read them as well :).
Verdict
All in all, not a bad novel to mark the return of Captain Kirk. But after reading the Foundation series by Asimov and Harry Potter series, I left as if the novel left me more thirsty than quenched.
So a 3 star rating to this novel by William Shatner.
