Khaled Hosseini is a literary genius. He is one of the most prominent writers, bringing Middle Eastern literature to the forefront in the literary world.

The story follows a pair of siblings who are forced to live away from each other. Approaching the themes of love, pain, and sacrifice, he describes how family loves, betrays, hurts, angers, and makes sacrifices for each other, and the significance of blood relations in our society.

Trotting across the globe through his novels, Hosseini moulds his characters into realistic beings that teleport you into their dimension and beyond— tugging on your endless tears and emotions with each sentence.

A perfectly narrated tale.

This book narrates a tale to us which is soothing. Words are produced in a way that It sounds like a beautiful poetry when being a fiction. Hatsoff to Khaled Husseni .

This book is pain, agony, peace and everything. it makes a reader weep.

Simply this book is incredible.

My favourite lines from the book ;

I saw a sad little fairy

Who was blown away by the wind one night.

I did see my own dreams and imaginations in it.

Read it and you will become selfless and judgeless.

This is the bond brother and sister holds

This is the most beautiful books I ever read, Sir Khaled keeps his language such easy and descriptive that adds more beauty to his illustration, the bond between an Elder brother and younger sister is way too pure, the brother sells his only shoes to bring feather for his sister, feather collection being her hobby was deeply touched, how the brother pleads against his father to not take away his sister.was way too taken

illustrations are such written that the reader can actually imagine that place and the people from book, uncle Nabu is a great character, whose obediency towards his master is literally rewardsome.

this novel is epic in illustrating the unbreakable bonds of love, the ups and down that keeps reader to stick for whats coming on next.

Below expectations

And the mountains echoed, by Khaled Hosseini, is not as good as the other two books of his- Thousand splendid Suns and The Kite Runner.

After reading The Kite Runner, I had high expectations from the book before starting it. But eventually my hopes faded as I continued into the book.

After reading the first chapter, I had expected the book to be mainly based on the long lost brother Abdullah, and his sister, Pari.

But as we continue reading the book, we see involvement of new characters about whose life, the author pens everything, but it's absolutely unnecessary.

A bit more of excitement and beauty was expected. But nothing like that happened. Many questions were left unanswered.

Though the style of narrating, and the writing is beautiful and at times, bring tears to ones eyes, the book is not satisfying at all.

Extraordinary and soul wrenching work of art!

Even though I loved'Kite Runner', I consciously delayed reading And the Mountains echoed.  Hosseini's'A thousand splendid suns' though beautiful, it drained me emotionally and  I feared the Mountain's echoed would do the same.

To be honest'And the Mountains echoed', didn't make me cry but it did evoke thousands of emotions. There are more than a couple stories in the book and some of them will stir your soul and stay with you for a long time, I guarantee. One reason, I enjoy Hosseini's work is because it doesn't deviate from the author's true self. As always Hosseini's  major premise is Afghanistan, he knows the culture and he explores it best.  You might not relate with the socio-economic conditions of the country in Hosseini's book but you cannot help but identify your self in most of his characters.

The narrative and editing of'And the Mountains echoes' is nothing less than brilliant.  Hosseini  has beautifully woven several stories and presented his best work yet! Although at times I wished  the narrator of a particular story were someone else, but then, I was also glad because it spared me some emotional trauma.

'And the Mountains echoed' is an extraordinary, soul wrenching work of art and a must read for all Hosseini and Majid Majidi fans

A bit wayward

Khaled Hossinni is one of my favorites. His words create such beautiful, poignant & real visuals which leave you mesmerized. I like him coz his writing is like' truth is stranger than fiction'. There will be no sci-fi, no mythology, no weapons, no larger than life creature in his works, yet it will leave you spellbound. The way he builds characters, their conditions, intricate details is like you r reading a dream.

This book started with signature Khaled Hossinni style, I was mesmerized in first 150 or so pages but than the author lost its grip. I agree with most of the reviews here that this book can not be rated as high as his previous other works. There are too many stories, some connected, some unconnected, there was no need for 2-3 of them. It was not a cohesive plot - it's like looking at an unfinished building which needed a better architecture and more polished painting

Touches your heart

After reading his bestseller, The Kite Runner, I was waiting for my next Khaled Hosseini read. Flipping through the pages of many masterpieces by some of the bestselling authors around, I zeroed in on this one. I must say, the very introduction of the characters make you visualize a lot. That’s the prowess of a great author who has mastered his literary work. Unlike many other reads of mine, this one interests and excites you at the same time, from the very beginning.

As they say, the pen is mightier than the sword. The author has come up with a real artistic way of defining the backdrop and hence the story seems so real that you end up empathizing with the characters, to the extent that you might even have tears down your cheeks by the time you’re done. Well, that happened to me. However, for those who are into mysteries and suspense, there might not be much to take back, in spite of the fact that the story opens in a mysterious way.

Overall, if you love to read fiction or reality-based plots, this has to be one of your picks.

Heartfelt Emotions

I have read all three novels by Khaled Hosseni and all of them brought out a different feeling in me. He is very good with words and the story moves like a continuous flow. Enjoyed reading them.

This book is more about Human Relationships, untold words, un-common situations. I like the way the author has given importance to the oak tree. by cutting it down, he shows the angst felt by the father and later when gholam speaks about it.

Khaled's novels are well researched and are deep in their content. They would always teach us the joy of living with kindness and love. This book also does the same. It may not have the excitement of the previous ones and does not make you cry often - but still a great book to read and enjoy!

Everyone should read this book. I highly recommend this.

Disappointing
Apr 23, 2015 10:51 PM 1916 Views

Khaled Hosseini raised our expectations sky high with'The Kite Runner'.'Thousand Splendid Suns' was also quite good. But this book disappointed me. Still I shall wait eagerly for the next book from this great writer.

Though at start it seems that this too would seem to stir the readers soul, however its a bit of a let down. There are so many stories interwined with the main plot that by the mid of the novel you loose focus. I lost interest I guess after 100 pages n took me a lot of will power to finish. It seems that substories have overshadowed the main plot and you are left wondering how will he tie all this in the end.Hence it leaves a vague feeling at the end of the novel

I was not impressed by the book and would not recommend it .I suggest readers to opt some other book rather be disappointed after reading it.

A wonderful read

The author leads us through the story by jumping into the skin of different characters alternately. The writing style is rare, albeit not unique, and the flow of the story is lucid. The writer has a unique ability to brilliantly describe even the most subtle of the emotions which one finds difficult to express otherwise. The story line is pretty good and engaging, although arguably there are a couple of parts in the book the author(and we) could have done without.

The tone of the story is a bit sad but its the sadness in it which ultimately gives us the pleasure of having read the book.

Another Hosseini gem.

This novel and the stories it tells is going to be echoing in me for days to come.  Hosseini wields a facile pen and I loved his characterizations.  I felt a connection with each of the characters and Abdulla and Pari's loss  tugged at my heartstrings throughout the reading experience.

It is amazing how the story transcends generations and continents and yet each is bound to the other by a powerful thread.

Hosseini's characters, yes every one of them, spoke to me and I felt, exclusively to me.  For example, when Markos realizes that "the world didn't see the inside of you, that it didn't care a whit about the hopes and dreams, and sorrows, that lay masked by skin and bone, " while thinking of Thalia, I could not but help comparing similar situations that I knew of.

Afghans, French, Americans, Greeks, each has a reason to identify with this book, but more importantly every reader in the world will.  A book you must own and re-read.

Read and Think..!!
Apr 11, 2015 12:19 PM 1789 Views

Hossieni is a gifted story teller. after reading his earlier two books, I can not say I found anything wanting in this story. It is told poignantly and as someone rightly said, it is more than a brother and sister. one puts down the book thinking of the rest of the family, rest of the community and rest of Afghanistan.

The only part I found as was extra luggage was the story of the greek doctor. Was the author trying to say that humans across cultures and countries are after all the same? Probably Not.

Your heart will reverberate with this story!!!

I have been a great fan of Khaled Hosseni's work. Our association started way back in 2007 when I read "Thousand Splendid Sons." It impressed me so much that I purchased "Kite Runner" and devoured it vigorously too!

When and the mountains echoed was published, I had high hopes from Khalid Sir. But never did I expect something so marvelous, so sentimental that it blew my mind off completely. It surpassed his earlier works by miles.

This book is one of the best novels I have ever read. Full with instances and emotions that leave you in tears. You connect to the situations and wonder "what if" something else happened instead of the one which actually happened?

For example-What if Parwana dint push Masooma off the tree? Or what if Nabi dint fell for Nila and in his whim to impress her suggested Pari's adoption? What if Idrish helped Roshi instead of Timur? What if the dog spared Thalia? What if Abdullah was in a better state when he and Pari meet after almost 60 years?

This book has characters who are real, with their shortcomings yet they are hero in their own way. Aunt Odie (Marko's mom) comes across as a strong woman who single-handedly took care of her son and also of Thalia. She is genuine, lacks physical manifestation of love but she is true to her words. You aspire to be like her.

Mrs Nila Wahdati is a gorgeous lady, a man's woman who doesn't think twice before cheating on her husband for other men.She is defiant and dramatic, but still you feel a soft corner for her when she is helpless (Pari dating her ex boyfriend inflicting further injury to her wounded heart).

Idrish impresses as a man who is compassionate and who is willing to help Roshi.A man who doesn't believe in doing charity for public praise. But then, in the end he backs off (like most of us, wrapped up in our own troubles and family issues) and then Timur is the one who rescues Roshi. Whose side would you take? Idrish or Timur?

The reader will find himself as one amidst all the characters woven by the writer. You will feel as if Abdullah, Pari, Nila, Thalia, Markos all the characters are somebody who you knew right from your childhood.

You will smile with them and weep when they are in trouble situations. I bet any sentimental reader will definitely shed a tear or two when Suleiman dies and Nabi is left alone or when Pari (Abdullah's sister's husband Eric dies). or at the downtrodden state of Roshi. There is a tinge of happiness when you realize that Roshi is recovered and is a famous writer or when Thalia prepares a cardboard box camera for Markos or when Pari and Abdullah unite.

The novel is full of real life examples and situations that will tingle your heart with familiarity. Like -The feeling of hearing somebody speak in your native language in a foreign land or the promise you make to urself in bed (before going to sleep) and which you forget before you get up the very next day. Or Pari's explanation of why she doesn't want the freedom (because she thinks she is like a fish in an aquarium who used to the protected world. She can see the outside view and enjoy the view but she likes to be on the other side).

Of all the noteworthy lines of the novel, few which I personally loved are: "If you really wish something, sit under the oak tree and ask for it.and if the tree wants to grant it, it will shed exactly ten leaves on ur head", "Why, he is asking why-Thalia", "Beauty is a reward given unmerited, randomly", "A story is like a moving train, no matter where you hop on board, you are bound to reach the destination, sooner or later"

Khaled Hosseni is a writer who observes life and people very closely and can make you smile and cry with the same line/situation he uses. This is a great piece of intellect created by a writer who has a flair for delivering excellent work.

A must read for all fiction lovers.

5 stars for this masterpiece.
