Aberdeen - The Meeting of 2 Water
Feb 24, 2002 07:04 AM 1157 Views

INTRODUCTION

I used to study in Glasgow, Scotland, back in 1995 to 1997. Spending a period of two years in Glasgow have given me a lot of opportunities, especially during the weekend to explore the wonderful and beautiful Scotland.

My trip to Aberdeen was done in late February 1996, at the period of the end of winter. It was during one of the weekend, when I decided to take a break alone and venture north to Dundee and Aberdeen. Aberdeen was actually my second destination.

NAME

I am always curious about the name of any city, and of course the same will apply to Aberdeen. I asked the staffs in the tourist information center, and I was told that Aberdeen was actually make up of two Pictish-Gaelic words, 'Aber' and 'Devana', meaning the Meeting of Two Waters, which is linked to the history of busy trading port in Aberdeen.

TRANSPORT

I took the bus from Glasgow to Dundee, before I continue on to Aberdeen.

There are many ways to get to Aberdeen, which is regarded widely as the third largest city in Scotland. Anything from Air, Train, bus, car and even boats arrives and departs, to and from Aberdeen. Aberdeen is linked with many majors cities, not only in UK, but also in Europe, making it a very accessible city.

FOOD & ACCOMMODATION

There are no shortage of type of food in Aberdeen. There are budget food every where as well as expensive choice.

There are also a wide range of accommodations located in Aberdeen. You will find hotels nearly everywhere, but budget choices like the B&B are located a bit off the crowd, but are always a good value.

I stayed in the Aberdeen Youth Hostels during the night, and it is really cheap for me, especially if I am still a students.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Aberdeen was widely regarded as a City of Grey. Most of the buildings and roads are grayish in color, giving the whole city a gray look.

I spend a few hours along the coast of Aberdeen. The coast is very long, and it will take quite a while to complete the walk. The stadium of the Aberdeen Football Club is located near the coast; I saw it on top of one of the slope.

There is a small fishing village, I can't really remember the name, but it should be Footdee if I am not wrong. It was really beautiful, all the houses is so small and cute, and it really give you a very nice peaceful feeling of the life over at that area. Though it was not in the popular list recommended for tourist, I got to know this place from a friendly elderly couple I met along the coast.

Located at the north of the city center is the Old Aberdeen. It was very beautiful and quiet place. In the Old Aberdeen, there are the old University of Aberdeen, King's College, King's College Chapel as well as the St Machar's Cathedral. This is an area that you should never consider to skip, or you will regret later.

Back to the city, the Harbor is a nice place to look at. I visited the Harbor in the morning and the fish auction is really a thrill to witness.

A very important area is the Castlegate, where the castle once stood. Here you will see a lot of old Victorian buildings, and was regarded as the oldest part of Aberdeen.

Besides all those listed, there are the Maritime Museum, Aberdeen Art Gallery, the Provost Skene's House, Marischal College, and some other small museums and parks.

The nightlife is exciting and interesting. You will never be short of life at night in Aberdeen. Very often, I find it really comparable to those in Manchester.

THE END

I ended my trips with a 4 hours bus ride back to Glasgow, it was really a very interesting and relaxing trips for me, though I must admit I was really tire after all the walking I have done throughout the whole 2 days trips in Dundee and Aberdeen.

Aberdeen is a very nice place to visit, and even to date, I still remember clearly the beautiful small fishing village of Footdee, as well as the beautiful wave from the North Sea smashing onto the coast and rise several meter high into the air. The sight of the beautiful North Sea is magnificent.
