Music Directors
Aadesh Shrivastava
Jatin-Lalit
Universal Music
If you are one of those Hindi film buffs, who think that using more than one music director for a single movie was a bizzare idea, wait till you check out this album. Several music directors composing for a single movie is passe. Aankhen has good four directors to compose, not one album, but just -- hold your breath -- one song!! That's right, four music directors to make just one song happen.
But do not jump to conclusion. Defying the old wisdom that too many cooks spoil the broth, this particular song has come out well. The song in question is 'Phatela Jeb', often sounding like a close cousin of the title song from N. Chandra's Style. The four music directors are Nitin Raikar, Aadesh Srivastava, and Jatin (and) Lalit. It is a light number about the modern youth, educated but umemployed and in dire financial straits. Quite entertaining in its lyrical value as well as beats.
Aadesh Shrivastava shows his talent best in the title song and 'Gustakhiyan'. The former has a heavy orchestra and full throated singing Remo and Sonu Nigam. The song creates the mood for the numbers to follow. The film is a thriller and the title number warms you up to it. The magic voice of Amitabh Bachchan is next in line. The big B sings a la 'Bhala Bura ' from AKS; only this time he is philosophising about Truth. The number is worth every yen you have for its lyrical music, conceived by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and written by Aatish Kapadia.
Originally 'Aankhen' was named 'All The Best', but later the producer gave it a more common title. That is why the theme song and the number 'All The Best' has Remo calling out ''all the best'' several times in his inimitable 'Ye Hai Jalwa' manner. Jatin-Lalit did not have much to do here, except copying the original number from Jalwa.
'Gustakhiyan' is an intense love song which holds you captive from the very start. The number is westernized with both Aadesh Srivastava and Vasundara (of 'Monsoon Wedding' fame) singing with all the might they have in thier vocal chords. This number, with lyrics from Prasun Joshi, is a definite chartbuster. 'Kuchh kasme' is a romantic number in this album which is otherwise high on theme songs and music. This duet by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik, again, has all that takes to be a popular song. The music is easy and lucid and the lyrics (Praveen Bhardwaj) impressive. There is a foot-tapping number too, 'Nazron ne teri', by Jatin-Lalit. The beats are good but the song looks as if it was pushed inside the film for the sake of a dancing composition.
