A Long Way Home is a real life incident about a boy(the author himself) who was lost at the age of five and found his family twenty-five years later with the help of Google Earth.

Five year old Saroo is the third child of Kamala. She works as a stone picker at construction sites. His two older brothers Guddu and Kallu work as sweepers in local train stations and wash dishes at restaurants to support their struggling mother. One day Saroo follows Guddu to the station where he works. Exhausted by the long journey Saroo falls asleep while Guddu goes off to find something for them to eat.

When Saroo wakes up, Guddu is nowhere around. While searching for his brother, little Saroo boards a train and falls asleep in it.

When he wakes up he is already in Calcutta, surrounded by a huge crowd of unknown faces. He knows neither his surname nor the name of the town where he has come from. He is later adopted by an Australian couple, John and Sue Brierley. He now lives and works in Tasmania, Australia.

Saroo's journey from his hometown and back after twenty-five years includes the days he spent lingering around the areas of Howrah station, Calcutta, the juvenile home in Liluah, Nava Jeevan orphanage, his Australian family and his ultimate reunion with his mother.

Saroo's story has been turned into a Hollywood movie - Lion - starring Dev Patel as Saroo, Nicole Kidman and David Wenham as Saroo's adoptive parents, Sunny Pewar as the younger Saroo, and Priyanka Bose as Saroo's biological mother. Directed by Garth Davis, the film was nominated in six categories at the Academy Awards 2017(Oscars) including Best film, Best Supporting actor(Dev Patel) and Best Supporting actress(Nicole Kidman). It won several awards including BAFTA, AACTA and Director's Guide of America(for Garth Davis).

Update: Hotel Mumbai is Dev Patel's forthcoming film, which is based on the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
