Sony Ericsson Z200 User Reviews

Thank God I lost my Samsung!!!
Jan 11, 2006 01:20 PM2809 Views

I might be the first person who’s ecstatic after losing my phone.

I was a brand loyalist, Samsung identified with me to the core (stuck to it like FEVICOL for 5 years). As a matter of fact, when I lost my phone the first thing I cried out was “Pa!..buy me a new Samsung”

Here goes my experience…..

Venue : City Centre…a sidey mall in Goregaon, Mumbai.

Scene : Walk into the store..the dude on duty is quite impressive with his apt know-how about all the latest gizmos..and yea makes no attempt to hide his earth-shaking skills.

I go through nonchalantly through some sexed-up models…but nothing excites my eyelids/cornea/iris/pupil…. Then he flaps this kick-ass handset..a Sony Ericsson Z200!!!

I knew it was mine..the moment I saw it. I got a cool one in Pulse Red & White…looks sporty/funky.

Features :

Size : 128 x 128 pixels

Dimension : 96 x 52 x 25mm

Weight : Around 100gms

Second external monochrome display

  • Wallpapers, screensavers

  • 5-way navigation key

  • Menu shortcuts

  • Downloadable wallpapers

Ringtones:

Polyphonic 40 tones

Composer

Memory: 300 phonebook entries

Call Records : 10 dialed/missed/received

GPRS : Class 8 (4+1 slots), 32 - 40 kbps

Messaging : SMS/EMS

Browser : 1.2.1

Games : 3nos. Minigolf, Alienscum, Honeycave 2

Colours : Velvet Blue, Pulse Red, Frosty White and Cosmo Silver

  • T9

  • Picture viewer

  • Calculator

  • Organizer

  • Stopwatch

  • Exchangeable front cover (2 faceplates included)

Battery : lasts for about 4 hours of talk time.

Experience : I've been using this handset for the past 4 months..and haven't faced any problems yet.

Interface is user-friendly, I can store upto 50+ messages in my inbox/outbox/drafts.

As aforesaid screen is colourful and looks pleasant, it has a few inbuilt themes for your display. you can set personal ringtones for your pals.

Voice clarity, ring volume is audible and the flap gives the phone a very hep look.

The only hindrance I felt was the shelf-life of my battery. I can barely talk for 4-5 hours on my phone in a day!

All in all...a good buy (purchased this one for 3k..NEAT!)

I'd say buy it if you are in your early 20's it totally goes in with the college look!...u know what I mean.

Sony Ericsson sucks
Aug 10, 2005 08:03 PM4455 Views

Since the title of my review explicitly says that Sony Ericsson is bad........lemme start off with the few positives of this phone:

  1. Nokia is the best but doesnt give all features in one phone like Engage doesnt have camera, even the latest 3230 has mono sound on recorded video (awful). SE gives reasonably ok features at a decent price.

  2. Good looks.....SE stands tall on this front. it's phones look good, style is something that SE has internalised pretty well so u r sure to get an attention grabber.

  3. Pretty good sound quality (i don't mean reception, I mean of ringtones). Polyphonics sound very good........better than Nokia, trust me on that one.

  4. About Z200, even though the screen is only 4096 colors, u can't make that out. The colors are really very good & this model optimisess the LCD effect to maximum. Compare this to the pathetic display of Samsung & LG clamshells & u'll understand what i'm talking about.

The problem is that SE positives end about here. Now is the time for negatives that have been bothering me for a year now (yes, it's been a year since i've been using SE-Z200). I bought it with bill for Rs.7400 in Sep2004 from Lucknow.

The problem started this May when the phone began to get on & off on it's own free will. I took it to the service centre & they made me wait for an hour while they examined my phone. Then they returned it to me saying that the problem was rectified.

I was in Lko at that time and I had a train 4 delhi that night itself. en route to Delhi, in the train itself, the phone's mysterious problem re-appeared. Next day I went to SE Service Centre in Delhi. The said that i'll have to leave the phone with them & told me to check back after 4-5 days.

Whenever I used to call them, they put me on hold for 10-15 mins each time & ultimately I had to disconnect the calls. In short, nobody responded. After about a week, I went to the service centre & then after making me wait for 2 hrs, they gave the phone to me saying it was repaired. Even I inserted my sim card in it, the phone kept on displaying the message, ''Insert Sim Card''. I pointed this out to them & they made me wait for another hour. After that they told me that the phone had completely conked off & it's circuit would be changed, so I should get back to them after a week.

i kept calling them & they kept on telling me that the procedure was on. This went on for 15 days after which they gave me another set (same model) with a different IMEI number. This set functioned ok for a fortnight but after that this too started behaving mysteriously.

Incidentally I was in Lko again, & one fine morning while I was surfing GPRS, a horizontal black line appeared on the LCD screen. I was amazed........but I was yet to overcome the shock when I saw another similar line starting to stretch from 1 end of the screen to the other. Then I shut down the phone & took it to the service center.

Now the Lko center has a tradition of prompt delivery so they made me wait for an hour & then returned my set. The lines were gone but the screen had blackish hue emanating from all the 4 corners. When I pointed this out to them they said, complaint was ''lines on display'', they are gone now, phone is ok. After haggling a lot, they said that i'll have to leave the phone with them.

Again 5 days passed & then I got the phone. This time the blackish hue was also gone. I was starting to thank my stars when I closed the phone (this is clamshell, u see) & to my horror, the external display was almost invisible (this phone displays a small clock on the outside in beautiful yellow tone). When I pointed out this problem, they told me that the complaint was of ''blackish hue'' & that has been rectified. Now I was rude enough to inform them that rectifying one complaint DOES NOT mean creating new troubles with the set.

As a result, I had to leave the phone again with them for 5 days. Thankfully it looked ok now, only had a few scratches to show for it's adventures at various service centres.

Now again, the phone is giving me trouble. Charging is pathetic, it shows or doesn't charging (on it's own whims & fancies) but doesnt stay charged for long. Calls get dropped because of poor battery, but i'm very reluctant to take it to the service centre, because a bad phone is better than no phone at all (mind u, SE does not provide any stand-by sets, a la Nokia).

Conclusion: DO NOT PURCHASE Sony Ericsson Phone, EVER!!.......even if God tells u to, Don't !!

The Z200 Saga
Apr 26, 2005 10:53 PM3570 Views

I have this urge to beat around the bush and am not going to get to the point early on. So only guys with immense patience can read further, the rest can simply buy the SE Z200 if they can lay their hands on a good second hand piece.

This flip phone made by Sony Ericsson was an impulse buy that I regretted for quite sometime. It was Dec 2003 and I was on the lookout for a flip phone. The only flip phones that fit my budget were the old fashioned Motorola models with B/W LCD screens and some other unknown brands like Bird etc. which would do nothing except connect you to the person you dial. The good ones from Samsung and LG were way beyond what my bank balance would permit.

Despite some reservations, I decided to settle for one of the Motorola models after making initial enquires and survey. The salesman sensed a sucker the moment I stepped into the showroom. After showing me the flip phones from the Motorola archeological site and Bird, he showed me the SE Z200… a phone that looked like the handiwork of Gorgio Armani and I was totally besotted. This flip phone looked out of the world, had a color screen (4000 or so colors) with graphical icons, IR port etc. and was only a couple of grands more than the basic Motorola flip model. I sensed immense value in the phone and was already dreaming of the style statement I would be making with this beauty.

I managed to save my dignity by swallowing all the saliva the phone had generated in my mouth and ran to the nearest ATM to withdraw the required additional amount. The phone totally costed me Rs. 9000 with bill and I came out of the showroom feeling a winner.

And sure enough, every person in my office was totally impressed with this babe and I even got a marriage proposal. The heady feeling slowly subsided after a few weeks, and I was beginning to realize my folly. My dreamy looking babe was turning psychotic real fast. My calls got disconnected even when the network signal strength was full. The battery at times would drain immediately after a few hours of charging. And the phone used to turn off and turn on at its own will.

Now this phone has a round display on the front which displays the network signal strength, time etc. What happened was that, one night (I was alone at home, with parents being out of station), I had woken up around 1:45 am to find the backlight of the front cover round display blinking rapidly. In my grogginess I got scared to death and assumed that there was an intruder or a ghost inside my room. I pulled my bedcovers and tried to go back to sleep not wanting to put my life at risk. Didn’t know when I fell asleep, but the first thing I did next morning (after finding no evidence of theft and dismissing the ghost theory) was to run to the showroom to return this crazed beauty. “It’s because you have activated GPRS sir!” the salesman said. “What nonsense!” I countered, “All my friends have GPRS on their phones, and none have these issues”. The salesman calmly explained that the issue was due to the settings that the service provider downloads on to the phone for GPRS accessibility, being incompatible with the Z200 operation software.

He sent me to the Sony Ericsson authorized service center and asked me to explain the problem clearly to the service engineer. Now as luck would have it, the service engineer was on leave and I had to deal with the dumb clerk. I repeatedly told her that only the phone’s software needed to be flashed/reloaded to resolve the issue and no hardware needs to be changed, and if the issues persisted I would gladly return to the service center, accept my foolishness, dance on one leg and apologize to her in front of everyone present. No dice! I had to surrender the phone to her for a few days (she also hinted the possibility that the phone may visit the capital of our great country if required) for necessary checks and repairs.

I was not surprised, when I collected my phone the following week and encountered the same issues the very next day. I marched into the service center and made a huge show of rage and righteous anger. Thankfully the service engineer had returned from leave and promptly upgraded the operation software. He then advised me not to use my existing Orange SIM and apply for a new SIM with the same phone number. With all this done I have not had a single issue with my phone to date.

I have dropped this phone on staircases, wet bathroom floors, gutters etc. and not a squeak from the aged beauty. To top it all the battery charge now lasts 72 hrs (up by 24 hrs) in spite of regular use and there is no call disconnection even when in a lift or train. People however no longer pay attention when I talk on the phone and the marriage proposals have dried up. No regrets though, I am beginning to fall in love once again.

Quite a cool fone...

The Sony Ericsson Z200 is indeed a good phone. Sure, it has some drawbacks, but then, which phone doesn't? Overall, as you read through this review, I think it's a phone worth buying as the pros by some margin outweigh the cons.

Phone Details

Firstly, it looks smashing...and I could go on forever about that. Coming in several replaceable covers(blue/silver/white/designed) and a circular LCD on the cover which shows you the time/incoming call/battery backup without having to open the flap, it is simply a phone you can gaze at for hours on end. When you do open the flap, the screen is fairly big, 128x128 pixels having a 4096 colour display but appears to have a much better resolution. No problems in viewing the screen and reading those SMS's at all, unless you select a bad reddish theme provided. The keypad is smart looking, though orange in colour but is still good to look at. Instead of the joystick for four way navigation which often malfunctions after a period of time, Z200 comes with a four way directional key system, so it stays fine for years.

Secondly, all the general options such as inbox, call register works fine, although the call register menu is initially tricky as all dialled/received/missed calls show on a single screen, but they can be distinguished by the arrow that appears beside them.It holds about 20 total calls. Inbox can store over 20 messages, but if you open the battery, all messages vanish.Similar for your stored numbers, as all data here is stored on the phone and NOT on the SIM card, and this cannot be customized, so that may be a small bother.T9 option is available, though writing messages is a bit different in Sony Ericsson phones than in Nokia phones. I did notice that the keypad is not very sensitive when it comes to writing messages-sometimes when you press 4 times for that 's' without gazing at the screen, you'll find you have only gotten to 'r'. Minor problems, these.

Thirdly, the phone is equipped with GPRS services, and I utilized this fact to the fullest. As mentioned earlier, the resolution in this phone appears to be better than the 128x128 pixels mentioned, and the wallpapers look amazing if in jpeg format and even better if they are cartoons/comics etc. The Z200 has polyphonic sound but is a little low on the decibel level. The vibrating alert assures you won't miss any call.

Sound quality is good enough to complete a conversation in most circumstances, but Nokia phones get better grades here.Ringtones stored on the phone are quite melodic, and unlike in Nokia phones, most stored ringtones can be deleted to make way for your favourite tunes.

Fourthly, the games are good as well-three games with pretty good graphics and sound, and you could delete two of them and download new ones if you want. There are about three or four themes in the phone, three of which are good, and one reddish one which is so dark it's virtually useless.

Using the Z200

There are three screens in the phone-the first screen is the usual one which shows the wallpaper/logo/time/battery backup and date. Pressing on the center of the four-way navigational key takes you to the menu, which is basically nine icons on a new screen with a new wallpaper. You navigate these icons with the four-way buttons, one of which takes you to Write Message, one to Phone Book, one to Call Register and the last one is customizable. The SEND/ENTER key if the space between the four-way buttons, and pressing this on a particular icon takes you to the next screen-options for that particular icon.

Coming to the bad part

Now that I have impressed upon you the good qualities of the cell, I must do my bit to touch upon the not-so-good aspects of the Z200.

1) Being a GPRS enabled phone, the memory of the phone should have been far higher that what it is. Effectively, you cannot download all the wallpapers/ringtones you want-you have to remove some wallpapers to allow space for those ringtones and vice versa. A minimum of 2 MB of space would have set matters straight, but all Z200 has got is about 600 kb, and actually even less considering all the preloaded stuff that you cannot remove. I found I had to clear my cache after every use of the Net, and could not download games/wallpapers/ringtones beyond 50 kb.Rather the maximum I ever downloaded at one go(a single item) was about 22 kb. That is unimpressive.

2) Ringtones are not loud enough if you are in a crowded room/walking in a street full of traffic. The vibrating alert comes in handy here.

3) Being a flip-top phone, it goes without saying-handle with care. One major drop and be sure to bid RIP to your Z200. It is better to use a headset-Z200 comes with Bluetooth as well as infrared.

4) Battery backup is not very good. You need to recharge every 24 hours to 36 hours at the most. Also, the phone gets warm if you speak more than 30 minutes at a stretch.I also found that after about a year, the phone hangs(switches off and then on automatically, but maybe that problem was restricted to my set only).

5)Another drawback is that there is no MMS support in the Z200. Also, Java is not stored on the phone so Java-enabled games cannot be run.

Nevertheless...

I would say go for it. It is not too expensive, about Rs 6000-6500 at the most nowadays. However, it needs users who are used and interested in handling new technologies. If you are a long-time user of 3310's or R220's, this might take some time to get used to. Saying that, once you buy the mobile, you will definitely love it. A new cover for each day, good graphics, fair sound quality, smashing looks and stronger(the cover does not get loose even after repeated usage) than most other flip-tops in the market-the pros most certainly outweigh the cons. And if you read through the review, I have just mentioned some quirks, they can really be forgiven(barring the memory) keeping in mind the overall quality of the Z200.

Pathetic battery and bad reception
Jan 06, 2005 12:22 AM2242 Views

I purchased z200 on 17th december 2003 it looks great its colour screen is also great but unfortunatly thats the only thing that is great in this phone , its reception quality is so poor that your calls willbe dropped frequently and its battery life is as bad it willnot last even for a day in normal uses , few of my friends have it and they all are facing with the same problem as I am , I gave my phone back to the company 3 times for service in january, march and july 2004 respectivily but the problem remained after that the company changed the instument also but the problem remained then also and when I enquired about it same problem was there with all of my other friends who were owning the same model , I do not know why the previous writers have praised the phone but what is can say its the most pathetic phone I have ever brought and will never ever buy sony ericsson in future becasure of distrust which I got from this model , if you want to buy z200 drop your idea of buying it otherwise you will be sorry as I am , last but not the least it has got a very poor resale value also as I was trying to change my phone with a diffrent one so I found that out also

do not buy Z200

>>> SONY ERICSSON Z200 <<<
Oct 13, 2004 03:42 PM4286 Views

Sony Ericsson seems to finally understand that there is a market for folder phones . Introduced with the new flagship Z600, the new Z200 aims to grab the attention of the younger, more hip crowd. And the Z200 has a lot of cool things going for it. 40 voice polyphonic ringtones, for example. Interchangeable cover faceplates, 2 of which are included, allow for some visible personalization. And a really cool round external subdisplay, that makes for a really nice analog clock.

But the Z200's style isn't just state-of-the-art, it's technology as well. The 4096 color display of the Z200 measures 128 x 128 pixels. A Large screen and high resolution: images and wallpapers will look good - just as the smart design of the Z200 suggests. Add pictures to your contact info and you'll really see who's calling. When your friend calls, his or her picture is shown on the display.

The Z200 comes with a funky strap holder, making the phone appear much more compact than the rest of the clamshells. The color scheme and textures are also pretty different from the regular metallic silver-grey combos. The shells are made up of high quality plastics and have a very smooth finish to them, which feels great, but is also susceptible to scratches. The outer LCD is a circular monochrome display with an orange background.

The unique personality continues to unfold as one opens the phone; the keypad is pretty ''new'' in looks and design. The layout is neat and the buttons are placed very spaciously, but they seem to have minimum elevation, which might cause some discomfort for quick navigation.

The overall looks, feel and personality of the Z200 surely stands out from the rest of the clamshell phones, which are more or less similar in design. The Z200 is a tri-band GSM phone with dual display, the outer monochrome LCD displays the network strength, battery life and flashes the caller id. Alternatively, one can also set the phone to display an analogue watch as a screen saver while in stand-by.

The display is bright and well balanced, the contrast levels are well implemented to give vivid colors and there aren't any signs of the yellow tinge or washed out images. The adjustments for contrast levels and a list of themes and very attractive wallpapers compliment the funky image of the phone. The default options for selecting various wallpapers (background) are some of the best I have seen, a clever mix of nature, abstract, and funny cartoons.

As far as the connectivity is concerned, the Z200 supports WAP 1.2.1 over GPRS (class 10) and houses an Infrared port. The biggest drawback with the Z200 is the lack of support for MMS; it only supports SMS and EMS. The rest of the features are pretty much standard, the memory pool is approximately 1 MB, which is almost bare minimum for a color screen phone. The Z200 offers a wide variety of ringers. The organizer is pretty helpful and detailed, allowing you to set the reminders and planners. Another setback is the lack of support for Java, striking out the possibility of downloading Java applications.

Games, however, are taken care of by Mophun, you can download and install from the over 500 games based on the Mophun platform. Even though the Z200 does not have an integrated camera, one can use the attachable external Communicam MCA-30 if one needs the clicking option. Out of the three games - Alien Scum, Honey Cave and Mini Golf, the first two are pretty entertaining and can prove helpful to kill some time. Honey Cave in particular is one of those addictive types.

the voice reception and transmission is good, the voice is loud and clear both ways. The network reception is in line with other budget phones, it's very much like a typical Sony Ericsson phone, and one cannot expect signals in weak areas where very few are able to deliver. The interface is fast overall, but not very conducive to messaging, the phone exhibits signs of sluggishness when put through graphically heavy tasks like games or browsing through the wallpapers. The ringers are sufficiently loud and they sound good, while the vibration alert is on the weaker side.

The outer display is pretty useful in providing all the basic details without having to flip the phone, but the caller name, which scrolls on the screen can be missed and one needs to wait a while for it to scroll again. The battery stays up for 2-3 days depending on the usage, the games drain out the battery very fast, if you plan to game a lot on the Z200, you will have to charge it almost every alternate day.

For a street price of Rs. 8,500/-, this color screen clamshell phone is one of the cheapest in its league. The phone is not perfect; it does have its share of shortcomings just like any other phone. The looks and style that the Z200 carries makes it stand out from the rest. The absence of support for MMS and Java keeps the Z200 away from being a perfect budget clamshell phone. The Z200 targets the youth with its funky personality and it's a good alternative for those who are looking to break away from the ordinary.

Not impressive for a sony brand
Jul 08, 2004 08:06 AM3107 Views

Its a nice phone to look at....very refreshing and all and it stand good while using it. But I must tell you that it has one of the most least stable softwares ever. My phone had its entire memory of downloaded wallpapers, ringtones, numbers and messages wiped out completely three times in four months which caused me a great deal of inconvenience :-(

Ringtones are pretty good...actually all the tones are pretty sensible than other brands which have sounds of cats and horses and all.

Display is impressive when compared to other phones with 4096 colors. Actually many people mistook it for a 65K screen.

The reception is not good and tends to get cut off in betweenSo that affects the clarity and duration of talk.

Memory is very less for a such a phone with capabilities of downloadable ringtones and wall papers. Many of the wallpapers are not downlaodable as it says that the item received is too large

Good for the youth

Combining a rich 4K colour screen and 40-tone polyphonic sound with exchangeable Style-Up front panels in stylish colours. The Z200 offers several personalization features such as exchangeable Style-Up front covers, full colour wallpapers and 40-tone polyphonic ring tones that can be tailored to fit any mood or style. The front panel of the Z200 can be changed with Style-Up covers, so the outside of the phone can be coordinated with the user’s appearance or mood to create that special look. The phone comes with 2 sets of Style-Up covers and additional options are available as accessories. The Z200 is fitted with a 4K colour display, which makes viewing images and wallpapers a joy. People that want to use a picture or a part of picture stored on their computer as a wallpaper can use the Sony Ericsson Image Editor software which comes with the phone. The Z200 supports 40 voices, which gives it excellent sound quality for ring tones as well as for gaming. The more voices a phone supports, the more like real music it sounds. On the Fun & Downloads section Sony Ericsson’s website, there are lots of free ring tones available, some of which have been composed especially for the Z200. Three popular games are pre-loaded in the Z200 – Mini-golf, Alien Scum and Honey Cave. The phone provides great gameplay due to the polyphonic sound and force-feedback effects.
