Good useable phone
Jul 07, 2004 07:51 PM 7168 Views

This phone is a few years old now, but they pop up on Ebay second hand very frequently for good prices. The screen is black and white and a nice size, although the bigger screen from the previous model J5 / J6 would have been nicer. All menus are accessed via the scroll wheel at the side. This is like the scroll on a wheel mouse and is a very good way of getting through the options for most things. Certainly better than a four way cursor pad.

I'd recommend anyone with a PC gets a data cable to use with the phone. Ringtones and wallpapers can only be sent to the phone using the cable connection and not via SMS. Musical ringtones are polyphonic and have a pleasant sound. The built in ones are reasonable but you can store ten or so of your own in addition. I found the Super Mario theme and have that as a ringer.

Also... you can sample sounds and use them as ringers or alert tones (e.g. SMS receipt). There appears to be no way to convert a sound to the phone's sound format though, you have to record your sound into the phone's microphone. I have a Star Trek sound effects CD and sampled a few of those which work really well. There is some official Sony software and some 'third party' software which is a lot more useful, floating around on the internet.

The battery is long lasting enough to be practical between charges, sound quality on calls is fine and sending SMS is helped by the scroll wheel to select punctuation. This phone has T9 predictive text which I hate, but others find useful. Like a few Japanese devices, this one is timeless. It doesn't look dated in comparison to modern phones. It looks like a phone and not a toy!

Maybe this is why the included 'games' are so poor. I wouldn't waste time on these! However there is a calendar which can remind you of appointments, birthdays etc. It's functional and very useable. I hope to keep mine for a few years, build quality appears good.

My J70 never hung

I have been reading all the 11 reviews and most of them have bragged about the same points. Low ringers, A soft vibrator. One of them even mentioned abt the Jog dial being on the wrong side !! Who is he ? A mobile fone manufacturer ?

The people who have designed this fone have designed it for a specific audience. This fone was designed for UK and European countries where the fone noise is much more than the commotion in India. I have been using this fone since a year and (touch wood) its been excellent. I have not seen a fone with better network capabilities than the J70.

The design, looks are excellent and so is the battery life. At standby, you battery could last the whole week.

As far as ME goes, Sony is amongst the best, probably it needs the popularity of the Nokia.

Not So Good

I hope this is only happening to me, I got the j70 of my sister as a present.

At first it was great, until I put it on charge and the battery fell out, and it was still on.

The next day I put, message memory to phone. It said my sim could hold 250 messages and my phone could hold 8. I thought '' hmmm just a lil mistake no harm''.

then shurtly after all my messages were deleated, I couldnt hold anymore and all my phone had been reset. As I help my numbers on the mobile not the simcard this bugged me. I took it to a phone shop, for my friend to look at it, he told me I needed a new one. and it got on my nerves.

So I would point out, go for the Sony Z7 . its better that the sony cmd j70 or j7

Looks can be deceptive

This phone looks quite good and trendy but there is an ugly face to this product too. there is a software problem with the phone because it hangs too often or shuts down automatically. so you have to remove the batteries and replace them again. besides, the ringtones are so feeble that you end up missing calls, the vibrator too does not match the nokia ones. sadly you cannot even download ringtones or logos. and the ringtone recorder is just a useless feature, good for nothing. the sony people forgot about he ambient noise when they designed the set.

though they have provided separate tones for picture messages, you cannot use them as ringtones, which is very stupid.

now for the real problem-if you get an extended call-the set heats up, which is quite bizzare.thanks to the jogdial you cannot even scrol through some messages.

Not worth the brand name

When I first bought my CMD J70 a year ago, was I excited. It stood out among the other phones which used to play the same monotonic 'Saare jahan se accha' or 'Jingle bells' ring tones over and over. The polyphonic sounds in this phone were really different - but that's about it. Sometimes, you could hardly hear the ring tone!! It is very feeble, except for a couple of ring tones, which you could not stand to hear as these were not melodies - just a cacophonic mix!!

The best part of the phone is the big graphic display screen (with good fonts) and the jog dial. On the flip side, if the jog dial is malfunctioning, you might as well throw the phone overboard. The reception is pretty poor and could never compare with the earlier Nokia phones that I used. The worst part was - the phone would go to sleep at times!! You will then have to remove and replace the battery as no key would function.

Phone book entries are very good and you can assign upto 3 numbers per entry. You can also assign Group Icons (family, golf partner, customer etc.). Typing in messages are also fantastic, with soft keys and a well-laid menu for symbols. The sound recorder is a sheer waste. You can shout into the microphone or try recording a song by keeping the mic in front of a speaker - and play it back with disastrous effects!! The games, scheduler, clock and other features try to make up slightly for the demerits.

In short, the CMD J70 is not worthy of being called a Sony product.

Friends,

Let me first tell you what happpened to the phone now.. My lovely phone, in which I stored all the contact numbers and other addresses and all, is DEAD now. No one in this country seems to know how to correct too. I gave it to the Sony Authorised service centre in my town, they have send it to some other place, and now.. they told me that its at Chennai.

The real review, that was written by me comes next.. But I have an advice for every one.. Take my word, and dont go for SONY (even if its free).

I got it as a gift. For the last 6-8 months, I have been using it. Although my friends like it, I dont.

Pros:

  1. Good talk time

  2. Easy to use

  3. Good graphics

  4. Low weight, Compact and slim

  5. Nice toy to be displayed in public

Cons:

  1. Ringing tone is polymorphic and some times, get unnoticed (That means u miss some calls)

  2. Cannot be used to exchange ringing tones, and picture messages(That is very very bad)

  3. Sometimes, it get stucked, and wont work unless u take out the batteries and replace it.

  4. There is no cover or like that available now for Sony phones.(Not common)

Thanks,

Adarsh

Not recomended

I have just tested Sony j70 and found that it was not up to the mark the recording function is very sensitive lots of hiss gets recorded along with the sound u record navigation system is very bad it looks like an old transistor and the time given for recording is very less i.e of only 3 seconds.

well it has a mobile explorer and a wap features. and the sound of the tones are good but the volume is very less u cant hear it when ur in market place. I think nokia 3310 is the best as compared to j70

Whoooaaa Sony must stay in the music industry
Oct 17, 2002 11:12 AM 5442 Views

Hi all

My first review and I hope its not a tirade against Sony CMD J70. I bought this set on a whim about 4 months ago putting my trusted Nokia 3310 (bad battery back up) away into the cupboard.

First impression, stylish, sleek and trendy with a jog dial. But for a person who is on a constant usage, a tad difficult. Ringtones are o.k o.k, but the volumes could have been more, cannot hear it over the music in pubs, customizable ringtones, well they need not have been there, tried my level best to record the latest of a.r.rehman for airtel, no way, too much of external noises, maybe a microphone input would have done the trick. Messaging is real good with predictive inputs. Cannot send numbers as business cards. A big drawback. Not compatible with the text of Nokia. Good battery backup though and sturdy to a certain extent, but cannot beat the Nokia which fell down from a height of 12 feet on hard rock and still managed to be intact and in great workin condition

This is not one for the constant mobile user, a must for teenagers, would have been great to see multiple face plates as well as colours to these

Jog dial seems to be the highlight and helps in easy access for all menus.

Grouping in the phone book is present. Groups present for boyfriend, girlfriend and a dozen other things, skiing, bowling, parties etc, no idea where it would be used, but then what the heck its real trendy to look

The start up and shut down sounds make people turn their eyes towards you and the best one I liked was the hourly chime. I set it up and in the meeting, all heads where looking at each other to find out where the noise came from. Alarm is pretty week and will never wake me up. Also, it does not have a ring+vibra mode like the Nokia vibrate first. Defenitely not the one for any working people

Hope this was not a belittling review

cheers

A Review on Sony CMD J-70 by Kitoo
Sep 03, 2002 10:23 AM 7376 Views

A Week Back I bought Sony CMD-J-70 in exchange of my Nokia 8210. Overall the response of the set is very good, Easy to use Menus, WAP, Speaker Phone, the set ia a good one or can say it is good thing for the value paid. But it has got problems like the mic goes off automatically, or when I swith off the phone it starts automatically with in a few seconds, The Battery backup is very good but there is a problem, like sometimes set hangs on. Overall I was very happy from mt nokia & not happy with the Sony's J-70.

Having searched for a mobile phone that had a mix of all features and at the same time being cost-effective I came across the SONY CMD-J7, which I feel is the best phone at affordable price.

Features that include a vibrator alert, fun games, WAP, E-mail, a jog dial and pictures apart from zingy tunes to match your moods make this handset the best I have seen amongst the many available in the market today.

The phone also has a speaker facility that makes it really convenient to use while driving. Its like having a palm-sized communicator in your hand. I doubt if there is any better phone in the market than my this Sony CMD-J7.

Cell Review Sony CMD J70 WAP 1.1
Mar 31, 2002 02:58 PM 9856 Views

Hello

Thanks Aarti for your Mail, thanks to my other friends also. Today I will write a review on my Latest mobile phone that is Sony CMD - J70 WAP 1.1, which I purchased yesterday from Ansal Plaza, Delhi. I have purchased this after so much comparisons with other models such as Nokia 6210, Nokia 3330, and then Panasonic GD93, 92 etc.

May be you've seen this Sony Model, a Silver color without a tail or you can say without an antenna. This is not the only thing which sets it apart from other models such as Nok 3310, 3330. I think the feature I liked most about this is its small length, very less weight about 60-70 gms and also a very unique Jog Dial feature. For techies , here are the details :

Standby time: 60-330 hrs (dependent on network and usage)

Talk time: 2 hrs 30 min - 9 hrs (dependent on network and usage)

The most useful feature of this phone perhaps is the good integration of Moblie Explorer and POP3 Email, yes it has an (Microsoft Mobile Internet Explorer) unique interface like that of Outlook Express, with fields like TO, CC, BCC, Message Body everything, also you can check your Yahoo Mails like that in outlook by giving the POP Address (pop.mail.yahoo.com) and SMTP Address (smtp.mail.yahoo.com).

Also, you can type the URL's of your favourite websites such as that of https://mouthshut.com. I checked Mouthshut.com and it shows up immediately.

Other good feature is that of 4 grey scale high resolution graphic display, Recordable Ring tones, where one can record his favourite songs or any voice and replace it for the Ring tone. Good SMS feature with sounds and pictures, Phone book up to 500 entries, Organiser, Scheduler with an attractive Calendar, Graphic world time clock, Calculator with currency converter, Games with sound such as Bananas, PicPuz, Mindblaster & SandArt are some of its nice assets.

For the techies, a good Data Communication via RS232/USB cable, Plug one end to your PC and other to your Cell and tranfer your Address book of Outlook .....

Now for the Most Important thing.. Whats the Price of this Damn Model ?

Its 7000-8000 Rs in Grey Market and 11000-12000 Rs in an Authorised Showroom with a Damn Bill.

O Shit, I forgot one important thing, that of Integrated hands-free speaker, same as that of Speaker phone of Tata's.

Bye

Thanks for reading.

Regards

Sony J7 - comparing to J5
Jan 08, 2002 05:29 AM 15469 Views

I recently had a chance to test both a Sony J7 (essentially the same the J70) and the J5.

I thought I'd write a few words on these two phones since I recently bought these two (with 28 days to take them back) - I think the observations will be useful for people considering buying either of these two phones.

The J5 is the older model but to all intense purposes in use these two phones are very, very similar.

From a users point of view nothing much had changed from the J5 to J7. The menus are the same, the games are the same, etc.

The J5 is taller but lighter then the J7. They both look pretty good but coming from Sony I have some real gripes about these phones which people considering buying them should know.(as well as good points)

1) Vibrator Alert

On the Sony (J5 & J7) vibration is achieved by using it's own speaker to create a vibration, thus you can't have a ringer and Vibration alert on at the same time and even when on it doesn't vibrate that much at all. This is

a huge pain in loud areas.

2) Software

Both these phones have built in modems and data cables are available - but I can't as yet find a single piece of software written especially for these

phones and unlike phones like the Nokia 7710, 6210, etc the manufacturer doesn't provide a CD with software.

3) Games

This phones comes from the people that made the play station - so why are the games so boring & secondly why are the games on the newer phone exactly the same as the earlier model? Is there a lack of mobile phone programmers

out there? I've said it before and I'll say it again - instead of lame games with monkeys chucking bananas at each other what's wrong with good old Pac man and those kind of games you could buy in the 80's built into a Casio watch? Also I'm sure I've seen one of the first Z models and that had way better games, some sort of duck hunt and shooting range game if I remember correctly.

4) Charger

The charger is very small and light - one of the smallest I've seen that has a built in UK style plug.

5) Display

The display is a bit on the dim side - a bit like the one on the Siemens 35i series of phones, also the front glass looks and feels very thin and looks like it would scratch easily, unlike a phone like the Siemens M35i which had

a pretty tough front panel covering the LCD. Also the LCD on the J7 seems to be a little smaller then on the J5.

6) Wheel Control

The wheel is really good, but I can't figure out why if 90% of the world population is right handed they put the wheel on the left The wheel on the J7 is wider and thus easier to use then the J5 wheel.

7) Missing button on the J7

The J5 has a really handy two way switch under it's wheel, pull down and it locks the keys (pull down again to unlock) - push up and it goes onto speaker phone

The J7 doesn't have this switch instead you must use a combination of that middle button at the top with # key to lock/unlock and press the middle key during a call and scroll through the menu to invoke the handsfree - I for

one don't like this set-up on the J7 at all it means you have to take the phone away from your ear, look at it and scroll through the display to find the option you want instead of a simple movement of the thumb to turn the

speaker phone on or off

8) Infrared

Neither phone has this feature - pretty dumb I think since they both have modems and every modern laptop has infrared built in. Even if you don't intend to connect to the internet through you phone it's a handy way to edit

your phone book. (assuming you can find the software to do it - point 2).

9) Coolness

They are both modern looking but the J7 in blue is a cool looking phone and the animated menus look great.

10) WAP

They both have WAP and if it didn't cost the same as a phone call to try it out I'd try it and tell you about it. I haven't used WAP on a phone since I had a company phone and someone else was picking up the phone bill.

11) Phonebook

Both phone can store a massive 500 phones numbers + whatever your SIM card can hold - personally I don't know enough people to fill all that up so I'm sticking to keeping them all on my 200 memory SIM card for now.

CONCLUSION

I don't know if I'll be keeping the phones (either of them) - some of the big features I was looking for vibrate alert, speaker phone and modem are all there. But the vibra alert without ringer is a poor comprosmise - most

people want vibra alert only in quiet places - but sony's answer is probably too gentle - the J5 is very similar to the Panasonic GD93 which I used to have and I loved that phone - in fact you had to be careful where you left

the Panasonic because if it was on vibra alert it would usually start moving across the table. Also the Panasonic's display was so much brighter and with 7 different backlight colours to choose from made it pretty cool looking.

Some people have complained the ringer's aren't loud enough - well I think they are pretty loud - it kind of depends more on the tune you have playing

more then anything - some tunes are simply at a pitch that makes it easier to hear then others.

The biggest thing going for keeping any of the phones is that the girl on the till under charged me by a tenner for the J7 and the fact I used £15 worth of gift vouchers so the phone wasn't that much in real costs to me.

Some times I wonder who actually gets a job designing phones because I don't see many phones that satisfy people's desires - or may be that's the point so we always want something more and end up buying a new phone each year. I think the real lack of downloadable software for the Sony is the biggest problem - do a search on the net for Nokia software and you'll find loads and Nokia help greatly with their datasuite. The J7 is suppose to support

downloadable ringtones through a datacable (which I have) just no software to make use of the cable other then generic phone book manager programs that are out there.

Anyway hope all this information helps in your decision making process - all I can say is consider you choice wisely cos you'll probably be lugging whatever you choose around for at least a year - personally I really miss my

Panasonic G93 (which was a company phone - which is why I no longer have it) and if Panasonic had made it with an inbuilt ariel it would still look dead modern. Plus is had voice dialing which niether of these have. And was only

80g.
