Samsung D800

Samsung D800 has a 850 mAh battery. Samsung D800 has a good camera. This doesn't sound too large for a phone with a 2.2" screen. Samsung D800 has a relatively display resolution 240x320 pixels. Samsung D800 is body weight 98g(3.46 oz). Samsung D800 has a good design.

Samsung has sung just right

The Samsung SGH-D807 (800 series) is a smalle and handy phone. It has the sleek and innovative features. It works not only as a cell phone, but is an MP3 player and camera phone all in one. Honestly the phone's battery life is not the longest, but that may attribute to having so many features the battery has to run off of. The volume could be better in some ways by just being a bit louder. The speaker phone is great! The camera phone is great with 1.3 mega pixels. The sound is good when you are filming others or any surroundings. With the camera phone you can take many pictures in one shot, it's almost like being a professional photographer. The phone is pricey, and I do feel there should have been extra accessories aside from the wll-plug in battery charger. It would be nice to have received maybe a set of headphones or MP3 adapter kits( sold seperately). But if cell phone companies did this then how else would they make the big bucks!! The phone is eventually coming down in price, however it is still new. People have actually commented how it is a cool phone whenever I pull it out. Other people start talking about how they need to get a new cell phone and their phones do not even appear to be that old. It may be a case of keeping up with the Joneses. Anyways the phone is small and portable. Being a slider phone really makes it worth the expense. This phone is available with a contract or with prepaid service, which is great because either way you can still access your email or the interenet. As far as quality I have dropped this phone a couple of times and there have not been and breaks or cracked pieces. The phone has not had any faults because of this, which shows me this phone can stand up to the test of durability. on a scale of 1 to 10 I give the phone a 7.5.

White made the difference!

My Samsung D800 I should say was an impulsive buy. I was among the people who always believed phones should be from Nokia or Motorola. I was planning to get the Nokia 6280 but ended up buying this one. The executive at the Link store told me about this 'latest' Samsung phone which is as slim as a Moto Razr with a better screen and all stuff.

He told me he has the white variant which no one else in UK can sell (Not sure how true). I had seen the black one but was not impressed with it. However when I saw the white one. ..I fell in love with it. I never bought a white gadget till date, but was impressed with the neat look of this phone.

The finish looked like one of those Apple gadgets. So I decided to go for it even without knowing the features :) I got this phone free on a 18 month contract with O2 for 35 £ each month. I get 1000 free mins and some texts (I don’t know how many) every month. I also got a Jabra Bluetooth head set free.

Now about the phone:

The first thing which strikes is that this phone is real slim and extremely light. You can easily carry it around in your pocket. The sliding mechanism is best in its class. It would not be wrong to say that Samsung has created the best slider phones. The Nokia slider mechanism does not feel as good as this.

Slide open the phone, you see a neatly made keypad which resembles the one in Moto Razr. Some people who use SMS may not find this good. But for me this is good enough as I hardly use my mobile much for SMS or playing games.

The screen is big in size and has good resolution. The fonts used in the menus are ‘huge’ and people who use glasses can read them without actually wearing glasses. I personally like small fonts. However this is not a cause for concern. The brightness of the screen can be varied for power saving and the phone by default has some good wallpapers.

Coming to the features, this is a little more than a basic phone. This is not a PDA or something with which you can plan your year ahead. It has a music player and limited memory of something close to 80 MB. It should hold 15 mp3s which is not good enough. The worst part is that the memory cannot be upgraded. This is a huge let down. But the music player sounds very good, almost comparable to an ipod!! But the limited memory makes it useless.

The phone has 1.3MPx camera. This again is old stuff as 2MPx is the order of the day. It takes photos in widescreen mode which is good. The pictures are good when viewed on a PC. Video capabilities are real poor and useless.

However the actual call handling features are good. Voice quality is excellent and the phone works even in places where signal strength is poor. This is the most important thing and this phone manages to do this well. The speaker phone is not loud and may be annoying to use at times.

Bluetooth works well. I exchanged files with many other mobile phones. The voice quality is excellent even on a blue tooth head set (again depends on the headset). I did not find the software supplied with the phone to be of any use. I tried to set up the connectivity with the USB data cable supplied but it just did not work even after following the manual step by step. However I was not bothered as I can use Bluetooth to transfer any files.

Other features are not of great interest. It has java support so there is no end to the games you can download and play. It has all basic stuff like calculator, world time (looks like there is a bug with this), stop clock etc. ..etc ..

Battery life, it works for max 2 days once fully charged. This is acceptable as all phones with huge bright screens have the same problem. If you are looking for battery life never buy phones with TFT screens.

To conclude this is neither a feature rich phone nor a multimedia phone. The main reason I bought this phone is it looked classy in the white colour. I would’ve never bought it in black. If you are looking for feature rich phone don’t go for this one. One thing which I really hate is the memory. For such an excellent mp3 player, one should have the option to buy more memory. It does not have FM radio also!! But what sold the phone to me are the white colour and the classy look. Of course the basic call features are really good. I would suggest you guys should check out the white variant before making your final decision when you upgrade your phone next time.

Your comments are welcome :)

Razr Killer!

Samsung created the D500 and won the mobile phone of the year award in 2005. The follow up to D500 was the D 600 which lacked the sex appeal but did come with an memory expansion slot. D500 was one of the best phones I had used its strengths being

  • Small Size

  • Fantastic feel of the sliding mechanism

  • Fantastic call clarity (uses a proprietary Samsung technology to give crystal clear sound when you use the phone)

  • Great display (262 K color the best in business)

  • 90 MB of memory (a phone is a phone and an ipod is an ipod dont get confused between the two!)

  • 2 MP camera (a phone is a phone not a digital camera, this is good for the naughty pics only)

Before you get confused in my love affair with the D500 let me get to the D 800. Samsung is one organization I have learnt to respect from utter disaster in design and product quality to the brilliance that their products exihibit today will be a good B School case study. The D 800 is a labour of love ( or should I say razor hate). I can almost visualize a short stocky korean (remember Odd Job from the Bond Flick Goldfinger) in a meeting room in Seoul, shouting at his team to kill the motorola Razr brigade. Get me the Razr killer you fools, get to the drawing board, give me slim..... and lo'behold D800 appears. This one looks sexy, definitely sexy... The black color with chrome covered sides will give other phones the Hee bee d'jee bees for some time. You will certainly get popular with this one. It brings the magic of D500 back certainly.

Lets get to the pros first:

  • Fantastic slim body

  • Great Slider Mechanism

  • Great Bright Display (nothing better in the market place)

  • Simple Menu navigation

  • Supports Bluetooth 1.2

  • Supports Stereo Headset profile

  • EDGE ready

  • Triband Radio (almost the whole world is covered)

  • 90 MB of storage (about 20 MP3 songs)

  • 1.2 MP camera with flash (you wont miss the 2 MP here I am sure)

  • Good Battery life (charge every other day)

  • Games and Downloads from https://samsungmobile.com

  • Java application support

  • Great world clock application

  • MP3 ring tones supported

  • 1000 Contacts and 200 SMS can be stored on phone

  • TV out function (watch your pics on TV through a cable)

  • Pixsel View (samsung document viewer, useful application)

  • Killer Feature : Built in Voice Dial for your contacts : No training required ( yes none required) => just say dial my darling to speak to your loved one (major reason to buy this one)

Lets now look at some Cons:

  • Slim in Razr meant a no feel good keypad, Samsung maintains the same feel could have done better here

  • Space for a transflash (where do you buy one ???) or MicroSD would have been great

  • Screen is large and is susceptible to scratches

The pros far out weigh the cons. The phone is available in grey under 12 K so is a steal..

Check it out and drop those Motos and Nokias for ever.
