Well its one of the few phones with a SMART Shape and Looks. You can change the look of it with provided panels as cheap as 60 bucks and the person looking from far can believe it to be a communicator.

Nokia 3660 being an improved model with keypad ..normal one. but has a problem of hanging, which is not here in Nokia 3650.

Great mobile for great lifestyle
Oct 07, 2004 02:25 PM 4659 Views

I got the mobile around 4 months back and am very happy to have this model. ( I change my handsets very six Months, but this looks to stay with me for longer). At first I just discarded the model when the dealer showed me this. But when I compared the features and saw the functions and its performance I was amazed and just hopped on to the model.

The handset is a little high end and has quite many functions. One needs to know how to make use of all and one should go for this model only if you are making use of all functions else you are wasting your hard earned money. It has functions like real one player and camera and you can download umpteen number of other applications through internet.

The keypad takes a little while to get used but once you are used to it then it will be easy. This not meant for those who are addicted to SMS....stick to basic models if SMS is your priority.... The camera is clear and screen has good resolution.. though you cant zoom the lens while click but one can view zoomed picture once its taken.

Depending on the memory card one can record the video... and the clarity is too good. I have downloaded many applications which are windows based and mobile seems to be comfortable with it.

The Only point I found to be little irritating is that you cannot use the contacts from SIM you need to copy them to phone book. But the advantage and added feature is that you can ad photograph of your contacts and that comes as display along with name when you receive or make call s from or to them.

Overall the cell is fun to use and value for money ( only if all applications are used and if you download) All in all I give 9/10

Good Handset but a few hidden limitations to be taken care of

Video Recorder resolution is very poor and there is a limitation of 11 second recording - Weird !!!

Video recording does not have sound recording built in but can play recorded clips with sound very well - very very weird!!

Sound recording clips too have a limitation of around 1 min.

you cannot record conversations on phone !!

Loudspeaker mode is not very loud and clear - so youll have to stay calm with handset mode only

Circular keyboard might be a problem and you will have to use both your hand if you are doing some keyboard extensive thing like writing a message or a note. Apart from it being circular the keys are just below your right hand thumb so a little practice would be required to master it. But once you get hooked to it you wont like the ordinary keypads...

For all these problems there are upgrades available from third-party but I could not locate any on web. You would find a lot of pages related to nokia 3650 software but then not the real software. And anyways if you find them another problem would be to download them to the handset. Most of Mobile phone ISP in India provide limited access to net and in most cases they offer only one site which would have only paid content to download.

So you will have tough time to get software for 3650. Infact on Airtel and Hutch (India) - even nokia site is not accessible for software upgrade.

With no reviews and guarantee of the 3rd party software there is a chance to damage or infect your handset aswell.

Interface and Usability is very good.

Multitasking between applications is excellent.

Snake comes in its new avatar and is really hooking.

Other games is picture scrambling kinds... not much to get addicted to but you have an option of using your own pictures to create new puzzles.

New ring tone composer is fantastic.. but you need to understand the basics of composing to utilize it.

Contacts are becoming much jazzier these days with a multitude of details that can be put along with the name and no. like 6 tel nos. email ids company names etc.

There is an option of attaching a picture of the person aswell... so when u get a call the pic flashes on screen messages section is also gr8 - you can send mms messages easily exhaustive help on all section to help you with new settings and features navigation is very simple and easy to understand.

You can rotate and zoom your pictures on phone. Bluetooth - gprs - Infrared are among the various options available to connect.

So think twice about it!

But over all a good attention seeking handset.

This phone is a damn good phone. What I really like about this phone is the camera. The video recording quality is bad (expected more from Nokia!) and it records upto 10 seconds and it DOES have audio!

Another nice feature is the Sound Recorder, which stores upto 1 minute of voice recording (irrespective of which memory) and the converter, which quickly converts different kinds of currency (though it can take quite some time to input the currency). A dumb feature is the notes feature (because of the keypad).

A con is the circular keypad because if you are used to a normal keypad then it?s rather annoying. You can store quite a lot of messages on either the phone memory or the Multimedia card (you get a 16MB one in the standard pack) and you can send MMS?s as well as text messages (of course!). Another informative feature is the log, which keeps a full record of every call/messages/GPRS connection you make and every call/messages you receive. You can customize the menu by moving the applications, and you can put them in folders (which can be created). An irritating feature is the screen saver, which CANNOT be put off ? it can be delayed for 30 mins at the most ? and either displays text or the date and time.

You can put an image taken by the camera as the background image, and you can change the colour palette. Another con is the vibration mode of the phone; it is way too loud. Otherwise this phone is quite good. Another thing you can do is that you can customize the left and right selection keys.

One of the best things of this phone is the Contacts application. It is like your address book in an easy to use method. You can not only store people?s numbers but their email addresses (helps a lot in MMS), a note about them, birthday reminders?

Some of the features I don?t really use are the To-do list and Calendar, since they?re business applications?

There are two preinstalled games, SnakeEX and Mix Pix on my phone. I really don?t play them; I play the games I?ve downloaded off GPRS.

Another thing I like is the scroll key (the key that?s in the middle of the four navigational keys). Another key that doesn?t really have use is the pencil key.

This phone has polyphonic ringtones, which are not that great? the polyphonic tones, according to me, are too sharp? (If you want to hear great polyphonic ringtones, listen to the Samsung?s X100?s ringtones? they?re FABULOUS!)

If you want help on this phone, there?s an application called ?Help?, which I?ve found rather useful?

And yeah, there?s the RealOne Player? I?ve really never understood why it?s there (I found out that it just plays streaming video clips with GPRS) so I don?t really use it?

There?s another feature called ?Clock?, and it basically tells you the time?and you can use it for setting the alarm time (though the alarm tone is too soft!).

And the last feature is the Infrared/Bluetooth connectivity. (since I don?t use it actually, I can?t really saw anything abt it....

So that summarises the features on my phone. My first impression of this phone was that it?s big and bulky? but it has got lots of features to make that up! Another thing should be said that talk time is about 3hours :-( how disappointing! This phone is recommended for people who don?t mind the keypad (it really got on my nerves!). I saw software for 3650 on the Internet, but I need an Infrared/Bluetooth connection for that? and it?s quite costly?

This phone is OK but I would recommend the Nokia 3660 (it?s features are the same? practically!) because of the keypad.

EDIT - Whoever has this phone, they should get a MMC reader (for pc), Infrared or Bluetooth dongle for the pc, because LOTS of software is available for this phone! You can start with FExplorer, a sort of Windows Explorer on the phone ( http://www.gosymbian.com), and for more info with connecting phone with computer, you can search the AllAboutSymbian forum ( http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum). I have a MMC writer, now I can play MP3's using UltraMP3 on my phone ( http://www.lonelycatgames.com) and its totally cool to hear my mp3's on my phone!!

Does almost anything.

I have been using this phone since 4 months and not a single point to complain about it. It's Symbian OS is very much useful, I have installed in it Digital Zoom, and MP3 player. Works great. Takes great crisp picture at 640 X 480 VGA.

Bluetooth is the the best in it's category. And gprs has not given me a single dissappointment. I keep changing handset every month, but this one I can't think of selling. Its MMC card is very useful, I have upgraded to 128 MB and can store a part of the movie on it. Inshort, this phone will last really long than any other.

Sony Erricson and Samsung can't come close to this piece, in MMC comparison and Bluetooth connectivity. For whom Size does matter can think of Nokia 6600. Well one has to get aquainted with its keypad, but after a while you can work with zoom on it.

Nokia 3650
Jul 31, 2003 01:44 PM 5646 Views

Words can't describe this phone.. :-) .. Actually, it's more than a phone. This phone is only second to another phone in the market ( I read that somewhere) ..The first one is Sony Ericsson P800.. I have gone through the features of P800, it has a bigger screen size etc.. But guess what? P800 costs around $600, but I got Nokia 3650 for $0 ... Yes it's very much true..

You can get the phone for free.. Now let me tell you about it..

For those who haven't checked Amazon.com lately, there is a deal for Nokia 3650.. The phone is originally priced at $300. But then, Amazon gives you a mail in rebate of $200. And you have the option of choosing two service providers 1) T-Mobile 2) AT&T .. I purchased this phone two months ago and only T-Mobile was offered at that time.. When you purchase a plan of $39.99 & above, T-Mobile gives you a $100 mail in rebate ( AT&T gives rebate too) .. So the effective price of the phone is $0.

For people who are planning to purchase a cell phone in near future, I thought this information would be helpful

Alright now about the phone

Again, this is one of the best cell phones in the market. It does weigh a bit more than regular cell phones but once you get to know the features of the phone you wouldn't mind the size or the weight.

One of the least known features of this phone is ''connectivity'' .. It can connect to wireless devices using Bluetooth, or Infrared. But both of them only within 10 meters. Most of the computers in the market now, are bluetooth enabled so you can transfer data between your phone and computer. You can transfer data up to 43.2 kilobits per second in high-speed circuit switched data networks and up to 40.2 kilobits per second in GPRS networks

I guess everyone knows about video recording, and picture taking capabilities of this phone . They are of fairly good quality and most of the pictures are <15kb.

The phone comes with a 16mb memory card, which can be upgradable to 64mb.

It also works as a PDA with features such as Calender,To-Do list, Contacts where you can store address, email etc.

This phone is Java enabled. You can download software applications too.. Until now I havent dont any tho.

The battery life is pretty good with 5 hrs of talk time and 2500 hrs :-o of stand alone time.

The only thing which one might get irritated is, you guessed it right, the Circular key pad. Altough, one might experience difficulty in the starting, you can get used to it easily. And how many times do we really enter stuff. I hardly do.

The phone comes with polyphonic ringing tones. Once the phone starts ringing everyone starts looking at you.. Nice way to get noticed lol..

Another silly feature is you can record voice, and use it as a ringtone. ( I recorded ''Dekho na haire ,Socho na haire'' song and now its my ringtone lol )

And ofcourse it has games too. You can download games on you cell phone and also play interactive games using Blue-Tooth connectivity..

In the end I would say, for a hungry college student like me, I am really impressed for what I got for $0 hehe.

More than a phone!
Jul 15, 2003 10:16 PM 5818 Views

I have been using this phone for the last 4 months now, after almost a year with the Samsung N-620 (now slightly disguised and sold under the Reliance scheme under an alias).

Initially, I bought this phone because I thought the camera was a very cool feature to have with your phone. What I didnt realize was this phone is more than just a camera playtoy.

DESIGN : This is NOT a small phone. People who wear tight jeans, will have trouble with it. It weighs 130 gms too. The circular keypad is a disappointment (probably the phone's only one). But after a few weeks of usage, you do get used to it.

Features : Symbian OS, Java, Digital Cam, Video Recorder, Infrared, Bluetooth, Polyphony, blah blah...it goes on. The full list of features are here

https://nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,2275,00.html

I would rather write about how the phone performs..

The definitive feature is the Symbian OS. Extremely stable, you can do anything with it. For instance, with the addition of available software for the symbian OS, my phone can now

-play mp3s

-browse the web graphically, download and send email via pop accounts

-access chat areas like MSN, Yahoo and ICQ

-play back large movie clips (i'm talking about atleast 30 mins of playback here)

-lets me store and read ebooks

-allows me to install some brilliant games with superb graphics.(Snake, your days are numbered)

The list of software available for this phone is endless. Enough to emulate basic tasks that can be performed on your computer. Third Party software also allows you to enhance the default features of your phone.

Oops, I forgot, its a phone! :o) Its a pretty decent one, but I thought that the voice clarity was much better with the samsung. The battery is pretty good, it should keep you going for 2 days under normal usage. There is no lack of features when it comes to the 'telephony' part of this phone.

About the camera : It captures at 640 x 480. It is NOT to be compared to a good stand alone digital camera, but under decent lighting, it takes some pretty clear shots.

The Fine Print : This is not a phone for a technophobic. You will be able to unleash its full potential only if you know your way around computers. You absolutely need a computer to use the software to interface with it. You also need an infrared or a bluetooth device. This will set you back a few thousand rupees. And it is the only way (practically) that you can install new software on it and transfer photos from your phone back to the computer. Software for the phone, though widely available, are not always free. Trial versions are available for most.

Bottom Line : I use this device more for its 'other' features than for a phone these days. It is a never ending source of entertainment. Imagine reading a book while you're waiting somewhere, or chatting with your friends on MSN via GPRS. I still feel I have left out a lot of features that the phone is capable of in this review! Though the phone cost me Rs 22,000 (back in april), it is more than worth that price.

One of a kind phone, a picture speaks a 1000 words

<<Review Edited after feedback from Antibiotix:>>

I have been seeing the image of Nokia 3650 as a concept phone on the net since its initial conception, I guess since year 2000. So, my joy knew no bounds when I became a owner of one. Yep, the circular keypad is different, you may have to struggle if you are a quick-finger sms savvy user, before you get used to it, but this circular keyboard makes it one of a kind phone, for a bold / daring owner.

The Symbian OS v6.1 is quiet stable but if you take lot of pictures using the camera, and do not bother to store in the Multi Media Card (16MB MMC card comes as standard package), the phone crawls - the 4MB main memory of the phone is not enough and should ideally be kept unused. There are limited set of unimpressive applications, like Notes but,ff you are a real geek, you can download Symbian SDK from Nokia Developer forum and start developing your own application using C++ or Java, and even try to sell it on https://softwaremarket.com

The Video Recorder: This is a great feature, if your service provider does not provide MMS this feature is not exciting. For me Singtel provides MMS, so as soon as I bought this phone I recorded my little one and sent it to my kins in India by MMS, and that made lots of difference to them, rather than viewing a still picture. Though each recording can last only <15 seconds, it is enough to share a moment with others. I guess the <15seconds limit is due to the file size limits in Telcos MMS centre which is <100kbytes.

Note: In order to play the .3gp file clips on your computer you have to use either a software provided by Nokia download site or Apple's QuickTime v6.3 and download 3GPP component of this QuickTime player on your computer.

RealAudio Player: This phone comes with real audio player! I could play streaming video on this phone, with my GPRS connection I could watch Channel News Asia live! This is one cool feature to stay informed, instead of staring blank at others when commuting.

Other irritant apart from the circular keyboard is - there is no Voice Command feature, even though Nokia site clearly states that this feature is available in 3650.

Other cool features, which I am not particularly interested are thumbnail picture for identifying the caller, limited set of games (2 to be precise), Java games, Xpress-on covers et. al. This is a well rounded phone (literally) with latest features and offering Triband and gives us a feel of future 3G phones.

''Snooping on the Keypad''
Feb 11, 2003 11:07 AM 12630 Views

Hey friends as I had promised I will be updating my review as soon as I get familiar with the phone here is what I find;

I was pretty excited when I first heard about the Nokia 3650. I already had a 7650, which I liked, well I paid around US$630 (US$540 + US$90 freight) and bought one 3650 yesterday and im very keen on sharing my review with you all. First of all let me give you a quick specification of the phone; Weight: 130g, Size: 130mm x 57mm x 26mm, Triband 4096 color display MMS send and receive Digital Camera Video capture 4 MB internal memory with a memory card slot for expansion. Bluetooth, GPRS, HSCSD, Infrared port Java support New keypad design - a retro-rotary type layout It isn't the lightest phone on the market it isn't even close to being the smallest, either. But it is passable when you consider the size of the screen and the other goodies This phone is a bit of a compromise. Kinda like a PDA, but not really. But it does offer a lot of bonuses.

The contact management system in the 3650 is pretty good. Not only can you have multiple numbers per contact, but you can have multiple addresses, email addresses, URLs, note, etc. There is even a field for the person's birthday, one for a full-sized photo, and one for a thumbnail photo that is seen when browsing the contact list. Voice tags can be added to a contact for use with the 3650's voice dialing feature. In general, the contact system in the 3650 is as good as most PDAs.

One of the most hyped advantages of the 3650 over traditional phones is its built in digital camera. The camera can take VGA resolution photos. The camera enables you to capture simple images of moderate quality.

One further way that the 3650 differs from the 7650 is that it is not limited to still images. The 3650 allows you to take short video clips, too. While not really useful at all for practical purposes, it is still kinda fun. There is no sound but they look decent enough to be interesting. The videos can be saved to either the internal memory in the phone or to the optional memory card. Another thing that really surprised me was that the video clips made on the 3650 could not be played on my PC.

The new rotary style button layout used by the phone is sure to turn off a lot of people - at least initially. I thought it looked like a good idea when I first saw it, but I have to admit that I am not adjusting to it as quickly as I thought I would. To me it makes sense, in theory, that the numbers and associated letters for the keys are in order from left to right. In practice, though, I have to fight 10 some years of habit to make use of this improvement. That is proving to be harder than I thought. I am sure that in time I would get used to it and appreciate it, but it doesn't come quickly enough. I predict that most people will not like this keypad design and that we will not see it on any future Nokia devices

So in the end, the 3650 is a decent phone. I just prefer the 7650 still, for design reasons. I'm willing to give up the video clips and take on 20 extra grams for the slider design. The only problem is that if you live in North America, you need GSM 1900 support. If that is the case, then you have probably never seen a 7650, and none of your friends have probably ever seen anything like the 3650 before - and that will make it a fun phone to own.
