Great Mobile at Low Cost
May 05, 2009 03:51 PM 3444 Views

Dear Frenz,

This is my second review in MS. I bought MOTO W230 by July 2008. Till date no problem.

The sound reception is excellant. The crystal talk technology has something new. Very compact ergonomic design and reliable one. Hardly 4-5 times, the keypad hanged in last 10 months of usage. The body material is good. The backside soft matt finish is wonderful. The screeen is scratch free I think, I didnt have any proctection layer, but till date no scratch on it.:)

I bought it, becasue my company not allowing to keep camera mobile. This is upgraded version of their successful MOTO C168 with mp3 player. The player is very basic, but quality is good. The phone speaker is very weak. I can not have conversation with speaker on.:( The multiple alarm, etc. are added features in it.

Talk time is good, you will get about 2.5 hrs talk time or 4 hrs mp3 player time. Charging is also fairly good.

I bought it for Rs.2650 at Chennai with 256mb card.

Overall, it is value for money. You will not get disappointed. I srongly recommned for those looking for cameraless phone with all basic feature in les than 2.5k(as of today's price).

Cheers

Anand.

I bought this phone because my officedoesn’t permit camera phone, seriously repenting my decision. I bought thisphone 30 days back and I am going to buy a new phone.Pros: 2GB memory at thisprice, . But the head set connection should have been at the bottom ofthe phone. But the software is really bad, it does not come anywhere near to any.it is easy to use. It would jus take a couple of days in getting use to theinterface and the keys. I have been using it with a 1gb mem card and has givenbe no problems till now, good battery back up too. Talking thru thisphone is also great, clear n loud, thanks to the CrystalTalk tech from moto. Ithas got a basic music player with no equalizer. But that isnt a problem, costhe music quality is quite good, equivalent to an mp3 player. However, it hasgot no bass at all. Its quite good for music though, if u get used to itwith no bass after a while(like I did). Even the keypad might have been betterinstead of being plasticky.

It is a cheap and the best mobile I have, it is easiest to work.it is very hard get damaged.the only drawback we have in this mobile is that we doesn't have a option of bluetooth or a IR. The sound reception is good and very clear, the mp3 songs are crisp. But the head set connection should have been at the bottom of the phone.thanks for a motorola company for providing me a fabulous product. I recommend every people to buy and enjoy this fabulous feature.

Please share this information to every members.but recommend to built a blue tooth provision.

I bought this phone because my office doesn't permit camera phone, seriously repenting my decision. I bought this phone 30 days back and I am going to buy a new phone.

Pros: 2GB memory at this price, decent features, looks decent

Cons: Horrible reception, Bad battery. The connection goes away after every 2 mins and I have to redial...

I have still not gone to the service centre but hope to go there this weekend....

Reading other reviews I feel 3 out of 10 sets are good. Go ahead and buy, if you think u r a lucky guy...

I am using cell phones since 2001, I change my cell every 1 year, both my experience with Motorola has been horrible..They are good company in US, but reception quality is pretty sad and its really disgusting when u r connection snaps every 2 mins and you have to redial, specially when you are driving...

Better phone
Oct 03, 2008 12:16 PM 3088 Views

I bought this phone 2 weeks back. Till now performance is very good. Its design is very good .but the display mode is not up to the mark. The phone is getting warm when I use this continuously for five minutes. But sound quality is very good.so I have some doubts about its life. Now I would like to expand the memory card to2 GB.so as to use according to my necessity.

Is there is any problem with this expansion and how much its cost.is there is any option to adjust the brightness and colour of the display.can use entire song for ring tones.and the cost is affordable. I am not aware about its problems and life now battery back up is okay. If the product is free from problems we can say this phone is cost effective.

I like my phone very much till it will not cause any inconvenience.

The sound reception is good, the mp3 songs are crisp. But the head set connection should have been at the bottom of the phone.

But the software is really bad, it does not come anywhere near to any Nokia phone software. Navigating thro the phone is a pain.

The phone is sleek looking and surely a great value for money. Instead of spending tens of thousands for other Phones this is a super choice.

The fact that you can expand the MicroSD to 2GB is really mouth watering. It can be connected to a PC through the USB without any hassles. You dont need any extra software to connect as you can download songs just like you do to any mp3 player.

The display is not all that good.

The phone even has GPRS facility! Yes its one of those cheapest phones with full value.

You can buy this phone instead of wasting money on silly mp3 players.

At around 2700Rs it is great value for money.

Six Sigma? Not in India atleast!
Aug 23, 2008 11:04 PM 3062 Views

Motorola, who originally developed Six Sigma Busniess Management strategy, which works on the concept of 3 DPMO(Defect Per Million Opportunities), doesnt seem to be following it in India atleast. I purchased this phone for my wife in March 2008 as she is not allowed a camera phone inside the office. She was earlier using a camera phone made by LG.

Earlier this month(Aug 08), one fine day, when she switched the phone back to General profile after using it on silent for 2-3 hours in a movie, we found that it had suddenly lost its vocal chords! There was no sound of ringtone. we checked all the settings, but all in vain! But thank god. the phone is still under warranty. Let's go for a repair at the workshop. I went there, they asked me to wait for 10 minutes as they checked for the fault. Later, they handed over a paper slip asking me to collect the phone in 2 days. I took their phone number and left.

When I tried to check back with them the 3rd day, the phone was busy for about 3 hours. Finally, I travelled all the miles and tried to collect my phone. Surprize.! It has not been repaired yet. Oh no, I am sorry Sir! There is no facility of a back-up phone. And. on top of it. you have to wait for another 7 days. I told them their phone is not working and they gave me another number.

7 days later.

Call. busy. call again. busy. call again. busy again! It went for 2 hours leading to frustration again. Travelled 11 kms again. it will take 3 more days.! Wow! 3+7+3= 13. I got my new laptop assembled in Malayasia and delivered in 14 days!

I wrote an email to Motorola from their website. After promising reply within 24 hours, they slept over it for 3 days. and then ask me to send them my phone number to an email address, where the email bounces back saying that it is full! Amazing.!

I still have to get my phone back from them. I am still thinking on the next strategy.(Please help me with good ideas!).

I know that the review is about the product and I am deviating from it, but somehow I feel After Market Services go hand-in-hand with the product. Moreover, I have never felt comfort using this phone ever. I remember the first day, when I had to transfer the phone book from the old phone into this one, there was no option of copying a contact from the external memory into the phone or vice versa.

One major thing I dislike about the phone is the software. which is not too user-friendly!

I think I would suggest, please think twice before you make relations with Motorola.

Motorola W230 - A cool mobile set you can trust
Jul 04, 2008 12:03 PM 6785 Views

I have been wanting to own a motorola for quite some time, but was stuck with various models of Nokia, LG etc. till now. Recently I purchased a Moto Yuva W230.  I should admit that I did not purchase this after much survey, evaluation and comparison - kind of stuff. I wanted a phone that did NOT have a camera, but had reasonably loaded phone & messaging functionalities plus mp3 storage for long duration listening & FM radio. To my surprise I was suggested W230 by my local mobile store(Mangal&Mangal Electronics)

1. Sound Quality/ call reception: Highlight in any Motorola phone, I have heard Geeks say is the signal reception & voice clarity. May be the oft-hyped CrustalTalk technology or otherwise, I should mention that the sound quality while receiving a call amidst city's( say in a crowded town bus ride) din is truly amazing. The microphone is also just great. Especially, you tend to notice & realize it the moment you finish the call & hang up. I got suspicious whether I really conveyed what I thought I did and whether the caller really heard me alright; It is THAT CLEAR.(points: 8/10)

2. MP3:This is a great feature in this segment of mobile sets(around Rs.3K+) W230 comes with a default 256 Mb SD micro datacard;expandable up to 2Gb. With this storage space large number of .jpg images(each restricted to less than 80kb) and about 500-700 mp3 songs could be loaded to your phone. The sound quality through Motorola Stereo earphones is excellent, despite the fact that the earphones look fragile and may not last long.(comes with a pair of replacement ear phone sponge cover) There is a buil-in speaker option too.  With headphones inserted FM radio option is also available. Ideal for killing your time when you wait for your bus/train/flight or during travel thru bus/train.(points 9/10)

3. Address book / Messaging / Hinglish Predictive text:Address book entries support long names upto 24 characters; supports optional storage either in SIM or phone; phone-stored-numbers support categorization, allow customized ring tone while SIM-numbers take the default tone only.

Message composing though would scare a'Nokia user', actually turned out to be very versatile. Hinglish predictive text is real cool, giving all possible options; even typical indian names like "venkatachalam" could be easily entered. this would require a'spell' task in Nokia, where one has to type in all the letters separately. whereas this could be done on the fly in W230. Not having provision for storing multiple phone numbers per entry is a let-off(most other sets score in this aspect) You also cannot send'business card' or'send phone number' option is missing.(points 6/10)

4. Ring tones / Settings / Extras:Some prozaic polyphonic/mp3 comes pre-loaded for ring tones; but the possibility of assigning any-song-any- length-mp3 stream(from the additional sotrage microSD disk) as ring tone is a cool feature. But to upload you have to use the USB access / data card reader may be with a Laptop. Downloading sounds from web or getting it thru SMS appears not supported. Not having a facility to record directly onto the microSD is a minus(Points 6/10)

5. USB data portability / connectivity: This feature is a good addition in this segment, but I understand Motorola does not give W230 buyers a CD(Motorola mobile tools) which is presumably given for its other upmarket models. But without this CD which has the important driver files, it was just impossible to connect to any PC/laptop. there is a very useful post on this aspect elsewherein MS. Please insist on getting a CD from your store or atleast ask for / take a copy of it if you are desirous of making use of USB data connectivity. Downloading this from Motorol asite has not been effective; I mean it did not work. Once I used the CD supplied by Motorola, it worked.(points 5/10)

6. Synchronization of address book, managing contacts between SIM/Phone thru PC does not work for this model(being a low end one?)(points 3/10)

7. The manualis a disappointment - not custom-written to W230.(points 3/10)

8. Extras & web Access:Calculator with currency converter, alarm clock, stop watch and a host of other features are bundled. which I am yet to try out. But Calendar function to store categorized reminders is a good plus. Web access using GRPS has been a non-starter but that I guess has nothing to do with Motorola but to do with the service provider(BSNL in my case) so more on that later on. Has Tetris & Sudoku for games.(points 3/10)

9. Batteryholds for about a day & a half.(approx. 50 calls, 60 minutes of talk-time). Travelling persons, better to carry the charger. For the same'daily usage my earlier Nokia is to last for three days. However, Motorola W230 charges thru UPS cable too from any PC.(points 4/10)

10. Other aspects:This has some trouble(or may be the set that I bought suffers) on updating the'network- tower locale ID'  - does not dynamically change as you move from one place to another. Has three categories of spcial dials - Speed dial, quick dial and emergency dial. Frankly I could not get to know the diff between speed dial(500 nos) & quick dials(3 nos only) . There is no possibility of creating/ maintaining diff profiles(unlike Nokia)(Points 3/10)

Overall: On the whole, this set packs much more than you would anticipate and more than one expects from the hitherto-motorola clones. There is a lot of functionality that is not brought out in the documentation or product catalogue, but you have to explore to realize it.(Overall simple average= 50%; may be if you assign some weights this set can score between 6/10 & 7/10))

Definitly not a bad buy. Keeps you busier as you explore one additional feature feature after another that you didn't think this set could possibly have. If you have some patience and are of sudoku cracking type this one is likely to enchant you.

CHARGE 2 HOURS WORKS 22 HOURS
May 14, 2008 11:06 PM 4919 Views

I have recently purchased a Motorola W230 mobile phone after reading the reviews on many websites including mouthshut.Generally all the reviews have recommended the product barring a two.

Actually I purchased this phone as I needed a good phone without camera and I was unable to find any model meeting my satisfaction. Nokia E62 is also great but is very gigantic to carry on in pocket.

However my experience with this phone is not very satisfactory, I purchased this phone for loads of feature it carries and bears a great look (Though it can be improved). The phone coupled with accessories like charger, hands free, USB cable, memory card & Laptop adaptor at a price of Rs.2830 is cool.

One thing that bothers me is that the phone requires 2 hours to charge completely and gets completely discharged in another 22 hours...This goes against the literature accompanying the phone that says a stand by life of 465 Hrs & talk life of 9 Hours...(My usage is daily an hour of talking).

The dealer now says that performance will improve after sometime..

My querry with MS Friends:-  Does the battery performance really improves with time...?

Good phone
May 11, 2008 01:33 PM 3127 Views

It has been almost 3 months since I bought this phone. Its a great phone from moto, superb value for money. U get 2gb expandable mem and radio for Rs.3000.  I bought this phone only after reading the reviews of it, also from this site. For all those who seem to have a doubt whether it would b user-friendly like a nokia phone(as I did), it is easy to use.

It would jus take a couple of days in getting use to the interface and the keys. I have been using it with a 1gb mem card and has given be no problems till now, good battery back up too. Talking thru this phone is also great, clear n loud, thanks to the CrystalTalk tech from moto. It has got a basic music player with no equalizer. But that isnt a problem, cos the music quality is quite good, equivalent to an mp3 player. However, it has got no bass at all. Its quite good for music though, if u get used to it with no bass after a while(like I did). Even the keypad might have been better instead of being plasticky.

On the whole, its a good phone. I recommend this phone for all.

Avoid buying
Apr 07, 2008 09:24 PM 4637 Views

I bought this phone on Feb 25 from Globall Access, Bangalore.  Since then I am repenting having bought this every day.    The user interface on Motorola W230 YUVA  is Disastrous to say the least.  Many menu commands do not work!  For example Received Calls >Select> view > Store does not respond!  There are many such menu items which do not work. When you enter a contact, it comes up with dictionary mode to enter name!  Messaging is a tedious experience.  To put a full stop it takes seven key strokes.  Very unpredictable behaviour.  Music player is so-so.  You can not select a song and expect it to continue to play from there on.  You need to press PLAY button every time a song gets over, manualy select next and press PLAY.   There is no missed call list.  You have to look at the received call list and look for whcih ones are checked and which ones are not to figure out missed calls.  Every day I am finding a new anomaly in this phone.  Motorola needs to update its user interface, it is century old user interface   Keys strokes respond very slowly.  Just to type'no' you will need more than 2seconds.  Motorola does not respond to emails to customer care.  No response to any complaints.   I want to sell it for half the price.

Motorola W230 value for money but could be better
Mar 31, 2008 10:50 PM 9751 Views

I purchased Motorola W230 exchangin my old Nokia 3200.  The specs and features are available at https://motorola.com/ motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=219 so no need to discuss it here.  Promo descrption is available at https://tech2.com/ india/news/value-mobile-phones/ motorola-launches-the-motoyuva-w230/29551/0

I am using the handset with 2GB MicroSD.  It is really a very good value for money handset.  Also it is good to have handset without camera instead of one which is of poor quality and is practically useless.

Major things that I likedabout W230 is looks great, clear and loud speaker, great quality of bundled earphones.  They are really loud and clear, in office environment one will require to reduce the volume while talking over to someone.  The speaker is also of nice quality which I use to listen to old songs night and the volume is audible in entire area of 175 square feet room.

My expirience with the W230 is:

Negative: Software is not like Nokia.  i.e it is not platform based.  One should not expect same set of features in similar phones some small glitches or enhancements are there which differs.

Negative: Does not support JAVA a very big negative in these days when most color phones from Samsung and Nokia are supporting it.

Reseller said it has modem.  No software bundled to use it.  Am trying hard to use is as modem but no success as yet.  The driver folder contains 1 INF file which is useful in phone charging using the computer's USB port.

Negative: Fonts are fixed size everywhere.  They are large and size is not configurable causing lesser characters to be displayed on small 128x128 screen.

Negative: Messages cannot be moved from sim to phone.  Once has to choose either memory.  It is not dynamic.

Positive: Does not have option to choose phonebook memory.  Here it is dynamic.  One can change the memory of contact from SIM to Phone and vice-versa.

Negative: No playlist creation for files on Memory card.  Although it is possible for files on phone memory.  I an not able to understand why they're doing it this way. Assume it must be  software bug.

Negative: File management option for moving files from phone to card and vice-versa is missing.

Negative: Categorization of files on card is not possible which is possible for pictures and sound on phone memory.

I would still recommend W230 because it is able to play MP3 and has Radio apart from basic phone with very good quality of sound.  The negatives get setoff against this.  And one cannot expect too much in Rs.3000.

I purchased this because I just wanted to change the handset and was using the handset for voice calling, WAP surfing, FM Radio and MP3 player.

What I lost in my old handset was Infrared, Torch and Java.

Best value for money phone in market today!
Mar 25, 2008 12:35 AM 3784 Views

Best value for money phone in market today! The phone has been an absolute delight. I had originally been planning and decided on buying Samsung’s C160 or C170 for Rs.2000. Both had FM radio along with GPRS - two of my most needed features. That was until this bolt from the blue from Motorola. This model actually came out two days before me buying it and it has a terrific feature of micro SD slot something unheard of in this price range. Along with a mp3 player it was a cool music phone with some good looks to boot(The blue keypad light combined with the black phone at night looks awesome!) So I decided on it at first sight. Price was 3k but you can get it for 2.9k. According to me the best value for money mobile in the market today......... For the rest of my review you can check out

Motorola W230
Mar 19, 2008 02:01 AM 14474 Views

Motorola W230 is a good looking entry level phone with FM radio with RDS and MP3 player minus camera.

It comes with GSM 900/1800, Display 1.6 inch 128 x 128 65k CSTN, Talk Time: 9 hours(approx), Standby Time: 18 days(approx), Dimensions: 45 x 110.97 x 14.7 mm, Weight: 80g.

Comes in two colours: Lustrous Silver [Licorice(Blackish) Frame], Dark Titanium Gray [Mandarin(Flame Orange) Frame]

Face Plate can be changed if desired.

Box Contents: Motorola W230, Lithium Ion Battery 3.7 Volt/910 mAh, Charger 100-240 Volt/5.0 Volt, 550mA which can be used worldwide, 256MB microSD Memory Card with Adapter, USB Data Cable, Wired Headset.

It also contains "Getting Started Guide" which says that you have to download "User Guide" from motorola website. But I was unable to find that searching thru various URLs provided at motorola.com.

Since you don't get "User Guide", you will probably miss out many features or how to access those features which this phone has. First time users will have great difficulty finding or understanding those features. Also, I was not able to understand the meaning of some "Icons" coming at top of "Main Screen".

*OTHER FEATURES:

*Motorola's CrystalTalk technology for clear audio in noisy environments, Zoom font while dialling, USB(1.1) charging, Expandable Memory up to 2GB.

To charge thru USB, you first need to download drivers from motorola website https://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/nss/driversNplugins.asp

It comes with preloaded Ringtones, Wallpapers and Animations, Speaker phone etc. Although you may like to upload your own Wallpapers and Ringtones through USB cable.

*CONTACTS

*500 contacts can be stored in phonebook. It has two type of search; Jump and Find(12 letter phonebook search possible). Many other features such as Category, Set Primary, Show/Hide ID, Add Digits, Attach Number, Copy(to or from SIM) and more.

It is possible to assign a "Ring" to a particular "Contact" or "Category".

MESSAGES

It has got all the features such as SMS, EMS, MMS and SMS Chat which will suffice our needs. Supports Hindi, English, Hinglish, Bengali, Tamil, Telegu, Tap Extended with iTap(like T9 input).

500 SMS can be stored in phone. It's also possible to store messages in your SIM and you can move an SMS stored in phone to SIM and vice-versa. More features can be accessed thru D-Pad's Centre Button. To show your "Area Info", you need to go "Msg centre menu" & then to "Info srvc setup" & then turn the "Service": On.

GAMES

Two Games only. Sudoku & Tetris. Sound Settings possible. Games can be downloaded.

EXTRAS

Calculator with "Currency Converter", My Menu, Alarm, Stop Watch, Chat, Dialling Services, Calendar.

WEB ACCESS

WAP 2.0 Dual Stack Browser, GPRS Class 10 for faster downloads.

MULTIMEDIA

Pictures, Music Library and FM Radio.

I have noticed that to use the phone as "Storage Device"(to transfer music etc.), keypad shouldn't be locked and the phone should be on Main Screen, otherwise it will start charging instead of acting as "Storage Device".

You need to "Switch Storage Devices" to access "Memory Card" pictures and music. It is not possible to view very large "Images". Since there is no "User Guide", I am not sure of specifications for viewable images. But large images can be stored on "Memory Card".

=FM RADIO with RDS(Radio Broadcast Data System) & Music Player=

The phone has got dedicated Music Key at Main Screen of phone.

Only 9 stations can be stored permanently in phone. I think we are getting 11-13 stations in Delhi. It is possible to use MP3 player without Headset but you need to plug-in Headset for listening to FM. It can record "Radio Clips" for the phone's Alarm. It can play these Audio Formats: iMelody, MIDI, MP3, AMR. Provided Headset is of low quality considering the fact that it is a Music Phone but it will do the job anyhow. Volume level needs more steps while listening music at night, for me it's a bit loud at the lowest level even.

Battery Life stays good for 2 days at least.

It's a very good package overall with so many features at a reasonable price, so go for it.

Moto yuva w230 is best phone why because it has FM and mp3 player also. u will get superb sterio headphones.

Battery back up is too good (9 hrs), it's not like old motorola phones.

My usage of the phone is app. 2 hours daily talk time, 1 hr for listing music in fm and mp3 songs daily.  With this, the battery lasts for 2 days.

2GB expandable memory.

you will get 256MB memory card free, so you can store 50 mp3 songs.

you will get USB data cable (which costs you 400/- this you will not get it for nokia) free to connect to laptop for copying songs , pic and charging your mobile.

it has FM recorder also but it is mono only.

Sending message is little bit confusing , if you used nokia previously.

Moto yuva 230 costs 3000/- It's cheap but it is worth it.

i would suggest this mobile if you are looking fm and decent mp3 player and not for camera.

This phone is a superb model from MOTOROLA and targetted to people who are looking for low budget phone supporting MP3 player  but not Camera.

The phone does not have camera but it is very sleek and has 2GB expandable memory ( sales package comes with 256 MB Micro SD memory, data cable and Micro sd card adapter , headsets) for storing music . It also  has FM and speakers. The phone weighs only 80g and it's technical specifications boasts of talktime of 9 hours and standby time of 450 hours( network dependent ). The phone also has Crystal Talk technology for background noise reduction in noisy environments.

The phone neither has bluetooth nor infrared but come with data cable for transferring music files from computer into the phone which is just plug and play. The phone is also WAP enabled.

My usage of the phone is app. 1.3 hours daily talk time, 24 hours phone on and little bit of music for 20 - 25 minutes daily. With this, the battery lasts for 2 days.

I would recommend this phone to users who are looking for basic, low budget phone supporting MP3 player but not looking for camera.Find more about Google Adsense Revenue sharing forum at  https://cellphoneforums.in
